An unexpected treat from Sant’ Elena’s impeccable vineyards on the Right Bank of the Isonozo river in Friuli. If the term “Right Bank” conjures up images of Merlot-based Bordeaux for you, that’s the right frame of mind to appreciate this mature but still vibrant beauty. It’s 100% Merlot grown at high density (5-6,000 vines per hectare) and at low yields (about one bottle per vine) on red-tinged, pebble-strewn, alluvial soils that look a lot like what you’d find in St. Emilion or Pomerol.
The aromas are complex and fascinating, showing layers of crushed red fruit, dried berry, baking spice, tobacco, and a touch of smoke. In the mouth the textures are supple and refined as notes of cassis, redcurrant, cherry, fresh herb and spice mingle and dance. On the finish, the cherry note becomes more clear as bright acids and mellow tannins provide support. This is a very classy bottle of mature red wine that will shine with roast beef or lamb – but one that’s enough of a value to pop open on a Tuesday night with any dish featuring lots of fresh or dried herbs. Complex and very interesting.
