Karl and Eva Steininger make a range of delicious wines from Austria’s best white grape, and they intend the Grand Grü to be the top of their line. The name is a fun play on words – evoking both the French concept of “Grand Cru” quality and the Steininger’s belief that this is a “Grand” Grüner Veltliner! Fruit for this wine comes from the Steininger’s best vineyard and is harvested in very late September or October. The super-ripe fruit ferments in stainless steel and then goes into large Acacia wood casks for malolactic fermentation and aging.
The real joy of this wine is in the bottle. Pour a glass and you’ll meet generous aromas of creamy ripe pear, peach, and apricot. Take a sip and you’ll find more autumn fruits – golden pear and apple – with a dash of baking spice and hints of classing Grüner white pepper. The texture is creamy and rich and the fruit flavors very forward and easy to enjoy, but there’s also plenty of acidity to keep things fresh and refreshing. The finish is long, mouthwatering, and features a hint of pink grapefruit and spice as it lingers. Just delicious now and for a few years to come.
