The Torbreck Woodcutter's white is a great example of a grape the Australians do especially well -- Semillon.  Outside of Ausralia, Semillon is best known as a partner to Sauvignon Blanc in white Bordeaux.  In Europe, the grape gives breadth and texture but needs Savignon's flavor boost to be really interesting.  In Australia, though, Semillon gets a little riper and a LOT more interesting.  The Woodcutter's Semillon is aged 50/50 in stainless steel tanks and neutral oak.  On the nose it shows minerals, wax, melon and citrus notes.  It's creamy textured with melon, citrus and bright mineral flavors and a long finish.  A great wine for richer seafood dishes, cold meat salads, or just sipping on its own.

Bright yellow-gold. Pear skin and melon aromas, complicated by pungent herbs, lemon zest and almond. Dry but fleshy, with sweet orchard and pit fruit flavors and good back-end cut. Rounder and deeper than most Hunter Valley Semillons, with finishing notes of lemon custard and mint.International Wine Cellar 90 points
