Pewsey Vale Riesling 2015 Product #30067 (In Stock)
Pewsey Vale Riesling 2015 Pewsey Vale Riesling 2015

Is this the greatest bone-dry Riesling in the world?  It's in the running, but it runs away with "best value" honors in the category and may hold the record for the most 90+ point ratings.  Intense lemon-lime, chalk, and floral herb aromas lead to a sizzling, dry, palate of yellow-green citrus, ginger, white pepper, peach, and more.  Finishes stony, long, and bone dry with a lingering touch of honeysuckle and lime zest.  Brilliant stuff.

"Very pure lemons and limes here that are concentrated, stony and fragrant. There's very pure fruit focus here, as this has the right balance of acid and texture. It's smooth, fleshy, dense, really deep and will drink early and live long."  James Suckling 95-96 points

"The 2014 Salice Salentino Riserva is a heavy and concentrated wine with prune, raisin and blackberry jelly. The wine is hearty and dense with sweet flavors on the finish that are interwoven tightly with equally savory characteristics. Despite those big bones, this wine from Cantele ultimately offers good balance and a very clean and correct drinking style. It a great value, too."Wine Advocate 89 points

Poppy Cabernet Sauvignon Paso Robles 2016 Product #32773 (In Stock)
Poppy Cabernet Sauvignon Paso Robles 2016 Poppy Cabernet Sauvignon Paso Robles 2016

Poppy has been a top value Cab here for a while, and the slightly more serious 2016 edition is going to make lots of fans. Nice doses of boisterous fruit, smoky oak, and sweet spice aromas and flavors are forward and ready to play. Juicy and fleshy on the palate with smooth, supple, tannins and a nice lash of black fruit, smoke and spice on the smooth, fresh, finish.  Easy drinking fun.

Torre A Cona Chianti Colli Fiorentini 2015 Torre A Cona Chianti Colli Fiorentini 2015

Our first reaction on tasting this ripe and luscious 2015?  Tasted like GREAT $25 Chianti to us...just much less expensive.  It comes from vines about 10km outside Florence, a blend of Sangiovese and Colorino with about 30% aging in wood for 8 months.  This 2015 is the best ever here, just missing Gambero Rosso Tre Bicchieri status (it earned "Two Glasses, Red" meaning a finalist for the big prize).  Full of bold black cherry and raspberry fruit with a lovely floral perfume that starts on entry and lingers over the fine-grained tannins.  A juicy, mouthwatering, wine with excellent fruit makes a zesty sipper and great companion for pizza, red sauce and burgers.

Campet Ste Marie Chardonnay Pays d'Oc France 2015 Product #33185 (In Stock)
Campet Ste Marie Chardonnay Pays d'Oc France 2015 Campet Ste Marie Chardonnay Pays d'Oc France 2015

We think of France's Languedoc as a hot region built to turn out hearty reds.  But Limoux, just south of Carcassonne, is higher and cooler than most of the rest of Languedoc with chalky limestone soils and cooling Mediterranean breezes - perfect for fine Chardonnay!  And this one is very fine indeed, made from just ripe-enough fruit (13.5 alcohol) that is fermented cool and aged 9 months in used French oak.

Pretty aromas of stone fruit, citrus and oak spice lead to a round, fleshy, mouthful of Honeycrisp apple and baked pear flavors accented by notes of lemon curd and toasted nut.  The fruit turns more white (peach, apricot, apple) on the finish with a touch of fresh butter and refreshing, vibrant, acids.  A fine Bourgogne Blanc and Macon alternative to enjoy with salads, seafood and poultry or just to sip on its own.  Outstanding value, too!

Whatever a happened to Cabernet Sauvignon from the Languedoc?  It was a "thing" a decade ago, and this rich and fleshy Cab suggests it could be a thing again right now!  From terraced vineyards about 7 miles from the Roman city of Nimes, it's 100% Cabernet aged in large oak cask.  Nicely fleshy in texture, it serves up aromas and flavors of ripe raspberry and currant and a touch of spicy oak.  A dried raspberry note adds interest on the spicy but smooth and easy finish.  Certainly a fine match for a good burger or steak, but this will serve as a party pour just as well!

Il Molino Di Grace Il Volano Toscana 2016 Product #33438 (In Stock)
Il Molino Di Grace Il Volano Toscana 2016 Il Molino Di Grace Il Volano Toscana 2016

German visitors to Il Molino di Grace's tasting room in Chianti call this "Balcony Wine," and we think that captures the spirit nicely.  It's a tank-raised blend of Sangiovese and Merlot, and it's loaded with crushed cherry, ripe strawberry, and a hint of watermelon fruit supported by juicy acids and a light dose of very fine tannins.  With air notes of red currant and fresh herb  come up to give complexity, although "complexity" isn't really the point here.  Stick this in the fridge for 30 minutes and pour it in stemless wine glasses (or tumblers) and slug it down with light food, friends and sunsets.

A reminder that there's more to Rioja than American oak, old wine and Tempranillo.  This fresh, fun, value Rioja is a traditional blend of 85% Tempranillo and 15% Graciano, fermented cool and aged briefly in tank.  You'll find plenty of ripe Tempranillo character - blackberry, dark cherry, sandalwood and spice - but also a refreshing squirt of tart cherry and raspberry from the Graciano.  Finishes with a bit burst of fruit and just a hint of spice over smooth, soft, tannins.  A fine cookout and summer party red that has more than enough going on to hold your interest through a second (or third) glass.

Latido De Sara Wild Garnacha 2016 Product #33441 (In Stock)
Latido De Sara Wild Garnacha 2016 Latido De Sara Wild Garnacha 2016

When it comes to Spanish reds, dark black-fruited grapes like Tempranillo and Monestrell get all the glory.  But Garnacha - the Spanish-native grape the French call Grenache - is more important quantitatively and delivers more fun for the buck, too!  This is 100% Garnacha made in tank, and it's a terrific summer red.  Juicy and ripe and loaded with plump strawberry and blackberry fruit, this gains a little extra interest from a lightly herbal note and fine-grained tannins.  Terrific BBQ red!

Ch Trebiac Graves Blanc 2016 Product #33442 (In Stock)
Ch Trebiac Graves Blanc 2016 Ch Trebiac Graves Blanc 2016

In an era where white Bordeaux is more and more likely to be all Sauvignon Blanc, it's a huge treat to find a delicious value like this one  made 100% from Bordeaux's other white grape:  Semillon.  And it's a treat to be reminded of the unpretentious, food and sipping-friendly, nature of white Graves.  This lovely example opens with pretty aromas of peach, quince and a hint of accacia blossom.  It's fleshy and mouthfilling for sure, but also fresh and clear with a nutty edge to the stone fruit and white flower flavors.  A light herbal note (fennel frond?) emerges on the clean, fresh, satisfying finish.  A fine choice to match with salads, river fish, or Tuesday night.

Ken Wright Pinot Noir Willamette Valley 2015 Product #33445 (In Stock)
Ken Wright Pinot Noir Willamette Valley 2015 Ken Wright Pinot Noir Willamette Valley 2015

Not surprisingly, American Pinot Noir legend Ken Wright turned out a bevvy of stunning single-vineyard Pinot Noirs in the great 2015 vintage.  And, in an abundant harvest, he took more open, forward, barrels from his great vineyard sites and made a deliciously ready to love Willamette Valley regional bottling, too!  This year's bottling includes fruit from Abbott Claim, Canary Hill, Carter, Freedom Hill, Guadalupe, McCrone, Nysa and Savoya Vineyards.

As always, Ken's Willamette Valley wine is mainly about lovely Pinot Noir fruit, with just a kiss of new French oak for complexity.  It smells and tastes of tiny wild strawberries, ripe black cherries, sweet pipe tobacco, and a dash of smoky  earth that really gush from the glass and fill your nose and coat your palate.  The finish is smooth, long, and brings a refreshing squirt of tangy berry for complexity and satisfaction.  A great value opportunity to enjoy the work of the man Wine Spectator called a "Master of Pinot Noir."

Enough of restrained, subtle, European-styled Sauvignon Blanc from New Zealand's Marlborough region.  As the winery says, this zesty Sauvvy is "Estate grown and 'Old School,'" meaning that it's loaded with the tropical fruit and grassy herbaceousness that made Marlborough Sauv Blanc so popular in the first place.  Super-ripe pineapple, fresh squeezed lime, and a healthy dose of passionfruit  (but not grapefruit) sing out here with a refreshing snap of green jalapeno pepper and fresh cut grass for complexity.  Finishes brisk and mouthwatering and dry - a perfect summer cool-off wine and great with salads and seafood, too!

Dom de la Ferrandiere Grenache Gris 2017 Product #33448 (In Stock)
Dom de la Ferrandiere Grenache Gris 2017 Dom de la Ferrandiere Grenache Gris 2017

What seems like a delightfully straightforward French rosé value actually takes quite a bit of work to create!  Dom Ferrandiere's sits in the Languedoc, about 20 minutes east of the walled city of Carcassonne.  The vineyards lie in what was a very old brackish water marsh that Louis XIV had drained at the end of the 17th century.  To keep the salt in check, they have to flood the vineyard every winter - providing a bonus of frost protection to this low site.

The grape here is Grenache Gris - like more famous Pinot Gris/Grigio, the pinkish version of a normally black grape. It's a "direct press" wine made from grapes grown specifically for rosé, with the skins allowed to mix with the juice for a bit to extract extra flavor and a vivid dark pink color. It's a fruit-filled and tangy rosé, bursting with juicy cherry, strawberry and watermelon fruit.  The texture is wonderfully creamy in the middle and then brisk and dry on the finish, creating a captivating ying/yang tension that keeps you coming back for more.

Ampelos Cellars "Syrache" Santa Barbera 2013 Product #33449 (In Stock)
Ampelos Cellars Ampelos Cellars

What the heck is "Syrache?" you ask?  It's a fun and cook-out-ready blend of Syrah (69%) and Grenache (31%) from the Central Coast region of the Sta. Rita Hills. Picked ripe (but not overripe) and aged in used French oak, this showcases the rich red raspberry/strawberry of the Southern Rhone's Grenache with the meaty, smoky, blue-black character of the Northern Rhone's Syrah.  Firm and fine enough on the finish for food, there's nothing here to get in the way of solo sipping, either.  As the winery says:

"Dancing in the kitchen to your favorite song.  Roasted marshmallows and campfires.  A sky full of stars and shared secrets.  A girl, a boat and this bottle.  "Sum" things belong together!  Our darling is the belle of any ball, but barefoot and fancy free is how she really shines.  She harnesses all the goodness of two great grapes from our vineyard."

Rovira Baques Cava Brut NV Product #33450 (In Stock)
Rovira Baques Cava Brut NV Rovira Baques Cava Brut NV

What happens when a Champagne-trained winemaker (Joan Rovira Basques) comes back home to Spain's Cava regions to make the best sparkling wine they can?  Here it means they plant a nice, big, plot of Chardonnay (60%) to blend with 20% each of the traditional Cava grapes Xarel Lo and Macabeo.  Picked cool, pressed gently, and fermented for the first time in stainless steel, the blend goes into bottle for a traditional, Champagne-style, secondary fermentation and is finished with no added sugar - a true "Brut" style.

The result is a creamy, complex, sparkler that can certainly stand in for Champagne in a pinch but is even more fun taken just for what it is.  Yeasty, leesy, aromas show at first with white and yellow orchard fruits underneath.  On the palate it's creamy in texture and vibrantly flavored with fresh peach, apricot and yellow apple fruit accented by notes of toast and spice.  Easy to drink and more complex than you'd expect at this great value price.
