Grand Gru and Great Pinot Value for Thankstiving!

If you’d like to keep things easy and foolproof, then here's the way to go on Thanksgiving: Steininger Grüner Veltliner Grand Grü 2016 and Brandborg Pinot Noir Benchlands 2014.  Grand Grü has been a lead Turkey Day recommendation here for years, and the 2016 marries great richness with a zesty finish and is still just $19.98/ea by the six-pack.  Brandborg’s 2014 is stellar value (from $16.98!) from just south of Willamette Valley, with gorgeous fruit and a just right kiss of savory oak spice.  Both are open to try all week and mix/match for best six-bottle savings.  Come and try them – you’ll be thankful you did!

Brandborg Pinot Noir Bench Lands Oregon 2014 Brandborg Pinot Noir Bench Lands Oregon 2014

How to get a great value in delicious, Thanksgiving-ready, Pinot Noir?  Start by going beyond Sonoma and the Willamette Valley to an under-the-radar region like Oregon’s Umpqua Valley.  Then add a no-flash, no-fuss, winemaking family like Terry and Sue Brandborg.  Last, stir in a dash of a great vintage like 2014 when these sunny by cool vineyards achieved lovely ripeness without any heaviness or excess alcohol.

That brings you to the 2014 Brandborg Pinot Noir Benchlands from 1,500 foot elevation vineyards in the Umpqua Valley (where Pinot was planted years before it ever reached  the Willamette Valley to the north!).  Light in color but long on flavor and fragrance, starting with bold aromas of ripe red cherry, blueberry, red plum and wild flowers.  On the palate it's light and fresh in texture and bursting with crushed red cherry, raspberry, and orange pith flavors with pretty shadings of coffee and mocha from aging in 20% new French oak.  Turns a little savory on the finish, making this a pretty perfect match for sage-laced stuffing - or just casual sipping before, during and after the big meal!  A best-in-the-USA price makes a great wine even sweeter!

Steininger Gruner Veltliner Grand Gru 2016 Product #32694 (In Stock)
Steininger Gruner Veltliner Grand Gru 2016 Steininger Gruner Veltliner Grand Gru 2016

The name is a fun play on words – evoking both the French concept of “Grand Cru” quality and the Steininger’s belief that this is a “Grand” Grüner Veltliner!  Fruit for this wine comes from the Steininger’s best vineyard and is harvested in very late September or October.  The ripe fruit ferments in stainless steel and then goes into large Acacia wood casks for malolactic fermentation and aging.

Pour a glass and you’ll meet generous aromas of creamy ripe pear, peach, and apricot.  Take a sip and you’ll find autumn fruits – golden pear and apple – plus lime zest and citrus with a dash of baking spice and hints of classing Grüner white pepper.  The texture is creamy and rich with plenty of acidity to keep things fresh and refreshing.  The finish is long, mouthwatering, and features a hint of lime, ginger and spice as it lingers.  Rich and round enough to handle the full range of Thanksgiving Dinner favorites and clean and juicy enough to keep you coming back for more.  Fallstafff 92-94 points
