Dom Chapelle Chassagne Montrachet 1er Cru Morgeot Rouge 2015 Dom Chapelle Chassagne Montrachet 1er Cru Morgeot Rouge 2015

Easy to forget that about half of Chassagne-Montrachet is planted to Pinot Noir (much less that it was 70% fifty  years ago) and that the large, warm, 1er of Morgeot is also about half Pinot (and should be more). If you've never tried Chassagne Rouge before, don't miss this.  At once very 2015 (rich, ripe, loaded with fruit) and very Chassagne (stony, minerally, austere on the finish), the wine's delicious.  Super ripe black and red cherry, framboise, sweet spice, smoke, licorice and fire-toasted bread are just some of the notes you'll enjoy in this captivating red Burgundy.  Delicious now - 2025.

Domaine Chapelle et Fils is situated in the heart of Santenay, the southernmost village of the Cote d’Or. The Domaine dates back to 1893, when the Chapelle family first purchased plot of land in both Santenay and Chassagne-Montrachet. Today Jean-Francois Chapelle and his wife Yvette run the estate. In total the Domaine covers 20 hectares, mostly in Santenay but with some fine holdings in Chassagne as well.  Since taking over from his father in the early 1990s, Jean-Francois has modernized his winery and made his winegrowing more old-fashioned.  As of 2008, all vineyards are certified organic with healthy cover crops and pruning and green harvesting to keep yields low and achieve fine ripeness.

In 2015, the weather was warm and yields very low indeed, resulting in superb concentration and ripeness in their 70 year-old vined Chassagne-Montrachet Chardonnay.  The grapes were picked cool, gently pressed, and fermented and aged 14 months in 225l French oak barrels (about 35% new).  The result is a classic Morgeot, very rich and deep and matching ripe yellow apple, pear and stone fruit aromas and flavors with notes of toasted hazelnut and cultured butter.  A lovely hint of tea comes out on the finish with a bare hint of fresh mint.  Rich, long, lovely.
