Dom De Martinolles Le Berceau Blanquette De Limoux NV Product #7580 (In Stock)
Dom De Martinolles Le Berceau Blanquette De Limoux NV Dom De Martinolles Le Berceau Blanquette De Limoux NV

Back after far too long an absence, this is a delicious, dry, crisp, sparkling wine made like Champagne from Limoux’s own grape, Mauzac. This is pretty easy wine to love – notes of green apple, pear, some leesy, yeasty, notes and maybe even a bit of vanilla give the flavors and aromas nice depth and character. If you need something to use for Kir Royales, Mimossas, weddings or graduation parties, Le Berceau is just about perfect, although it really shines on its own at parties, weddings, or your back porch on a Tuesday evening.

Ramey Syrah Sonoma Coast 2014 Product #31237 (In Stock)
Ramey Syrah Sonoma Coast 2014 Ramey Syrah Sonoma Coast 2014

As Robert Parker says, "David Ramey has always done a top-notch job with Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon as well as Syrah, although he rarely gets enough credit for the latter."

"The 2014 Syrah (Sonoma Coast) is dense, powerful and bursting at the seams with explosive energy. Dried flowers, tobacco, mint, dried cherries, smoke and licorice are all given an extra kick of intensity from the early-ripening vintage."  Vinous (Galloni) 89-91 points

"Well-structured and appealingly savory, with blueberry and smoky cured meat aromas and focused flavors of dark plum, underbrush and pepper."Wine Spectator 90 points

"Co-fermented with 3% Viognier, the 2014 Syrah Sonoma Coast has an intense nose of crushed black cherries and black berries with floral hints of roses and potpourri, plus touches of wild thyme and garrigue. Medium-bodied, it delivers a lot of fruit and earthy flavors with rounded tannins and great length."Wine Advocate 90 points

Bruni Poggio D' Elsa Cabernet Sangiovese 2016 Product #32137 (In Stock)
Bruni Poggio D' Elsa Cabernet Sangiovese 2016 Bruni Poggio D' Elsa Cabernet Sangiovese 2016

Winemaker Marco Bruni and his siblings named this “Super Tuscan” red for their mom, Elsa – could it be anything other than fantastic?  From Tuscany’s Maremma region, a slice of western Tuscany that gets all of the brilliant “Tuscan sun” that makes Chianti so famous plus cooling breezes from the nearby sea.  It’s sometimes called the “California of Italy” because while Sangiovese (the main grape of Chianti and Brunello) is great here, so is Napa Valley’s Cabernet Sauvignon.  Here, the Bruni’s blend equal parts Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon and age about 30% of the wine in French oak casks.

A sizzling value in super-Tuscan red blends of 50% Sangiovese - for Italian zest and red fruit - and 50% Cabernet Sauvignon - for richness and dark currant fruit - raised 70% in tank and 30% in large oak cask for spice.  It's loaded with black cherry, plum, and black currant fruit aromas and flavors with a hint of cedar and tobacco for complexity.  Juicy like Chianti, rich Cabernet Sauvignon.  Yum!

Ch Tauzinat l'Hermitage St Emilion Grand Cru 2015 Product #32755 (In Stock)
Ch Tauzinat l'Hermitage St Emilion Grand Cru 2015 Ch Tauzinat l'Hermitage St Emilion Grand Cru 2015

The Moueix family are a force on the Right Bank of Bordeaux, important in both Pomerol and Saint-Emilion.  Their Château Tauzinat l'Hermitage is smack in the middle of the Saint-Emilion plateau on one of the best clay/limestone sites in the Commune.  Always seductively textured and aromatic.  Drink 2020 – 2038.

“The 2015 Tauzinat L'Hermitage is dense, powerful and explosive. A wine of depth and character, the 2015 possesses notable depth throughout. The style is ripe and explosive to the core, yet the 2015 also shows terrific persistence through to the finish along with considerable aromatic complexity that adds nuance. There is certainly plenty to like here.”  Vinous (Galloni) 89-92 points

“The 2015 Château Tauzinat l'Hermitage has a refined, quite understated, but poised bouquet that blossoms in the glass, scents of briary and woodland coming through with aeration. The palate is precise on the entry, structured with good backbone, counterbalanced by exuberant blackberry and strawberry notes on the lightly spiced finish. This is a delightful Saint Émilion that should offer 15-20 years of pleasure.” Wine Advocate 90-92 points

Barboursville Octagon Meritage 2014 Barboursville Octagon Meritage 2014

Perhaps the greatest vintage ever here!

"The intense floral and blackberry aromas leap out of the glass at you and there's a hint of spice from the oak, too. Not only does this have great concentration of fruit and really fine tannins, but they already mesh beautifully and that gives this Bordeaux blend stunning balance and purity of flavor. Probably the finest red ever made in modern Virginia! Maybe as much as two decades of ageing potential."  James Suckling 96 points

Dom Philippe Plantevin Cdr Villages La Daurelle 2015 Product #32800 (In Stock)
Dom Philippe Plantevin Cdr Villages La Daurelle 2015 Dom Philippe Plantevin Cdr Villages La Daurelle 2015

Probably the best value in robust Rhone red wine we have in the store now - a wine that blows away most $30-$50 "luxury" Gigondas and a whole lot of Chateauneuf!  In fact, this is the most Chateauneuf-like edition of La Daurelle we’ve seen in years and while it’s already utterly delicious and a fruit-filled way, it’s going to get even better over the next 10 years.

In vintage 2015, Philippe had to go in a slightly different direction with La Daurelle, taking advantage of the amazing success he had with ripe fruit flavors while avoiding the tough tannins that have marred some other favorites this year.  As usual, it’s a blend of 50% Grenache, 30% Syrah ad 10% each Mourvedre and Carignan, all aged in used French oak cask.  The aromas are deep and complex, with bold black raspberry, ripe blueberry, wild herb, and black olive scents that pick up a bit of Franboise  liqueur with air.

In the mouth it trades the chocolate plushness of 2012 for more pure fruit-driven flavors – layers of raspberry, roasted strawberry, and black cherry – with bold accents of black olive and garigue (the mix of wild lavender, rosemary and thyme you smell on a warm day in the Southern Rhone).  The fruit and garigue  flavors push on through a remarkably fresh, clean, finish where fine-grained, ripe, tannins give plenty of food and cellar-friendly support.  I love how it’s picking up weight in the 3 months since it landed in the US and while I’ll drink plenty this year, I’m hiding some away for even more richness and weight to come.  You should too!

Seriously compelling sparkling Chenin Blanc here!  Loads of ripe Chenin fruit on the nose and palate - white stone fruit, quince, green pineapple - framed by the toasty, yeasty, notes that only in-bottle secondary fermentation and age can provide.  Finishes long and pure and dry, with quince, chalk, and toast flavors lingering. Branger Muscadet Les Fils De Gras Mouton 2016 Product #32819 (In Stock)
Branger Muscadet Les Fils De Gras Mouton 2016 Branger Muscadet Les Fils De Gras Mouton 2016

The world's most under-valued great white wine could just be Muscadet - the bone-dry, stony, green-fruited Loire Valley white that folks keep confusing with sweet/perfumy "Muscat."  The grape is actually Melon de Bourgogne and it gives a tart, green apple and lime zest, wine that needs a few months resting on the lees to develop matching richness and depth.  This one's delicious for now-2025 (really!) and crazy cheap for the quality.

Very limited.

"Another standout, the 2016 Evangelho Heritage Wine is wonderfully fragrant and lifted. Medium in body, gracious and super-expressive, the Evangelho is pure class. All the elements simply come together in this super-expressive Zinfandel-based wine. The combination of sandy soils and unique field blend of approximately 60% Zinfandel, 35% Mataro and 5% mixed blacks results in a wine of compelling beauty and pedigree."  Vinous (Galloni) 93 points

Ch Larrivet Haut Brion 2015 Product #32862 (In Stock)
Ch Larrivet Haut Brion 2015 Ch Larrivet Haut Brion 2015

Lush and very approachable already.

"This is very structured and dense from here. Full body, chewy and powerful. Excellent tannin tension. Best ever from here?"  James Suckling 94-95 points

"The 2015 Larrivet Haut Brion might be overlooked against some startling other 2015s with "Haut Brion" in their name, which would be wholly unfair because this is a potentially great wine. It has an outgoing bouquet with plenty of bright and bushy tailed red fruit that is well defined and very nicely focused. The new oak is carefully used here and gives it real lift. The palate is medium-bodied with fine grain tannins, fleshy in the mouth with crisp acidity and a nicely composed, lightly spiced finish. This is an excellent Pessac-Léognon and it will hopefully will be well priced."Wine Advocate 92-94 points

Sometimes you just want a big ole mouthful of purple fruit, spiced oak, and dusty tannins to enjoy with BBQ ribs, steak or a Tuesday night.  That's what this delivers in spades at a very fine value price for Petite Sirah.  Bold aromas and flavors of mulberry, blackberry, and black plum with dashes of cracked pepper and sweet spice show on the nose and in the mouth.  There's enough dusty tannin to know it's Petite Sirah, but nothing that gets in the way of the smooth finish and casual sipping.

Terre Nere Etna Bianco 2016 Product #32884 (In Stock)
Terre Nere Etna Bianco 2016 Terre Nere Etna Bianco 2016

Think of this as a cross between Chardonnay (bit of richness, a touch of oak) and zesty Sauvignon Blanc (stone fruit, citrus, herb) and you'll be in the general ballpark.  A deliciously ripe and fresh white to sip and savor.

"Harmonious, lively aromas and flavors of white stone fruit and aromatic herbs. Bright and juicy, with a refreshing saline bite on the long smooth finish. Less concentrated than some past vintages of Etna Bianco from Terre Nere, but remarkably fresh and easy to drink. A lovely Etna Bianco that mercifully doesn’t taste of Chardonnay or other varieties that have no place on Etna. This is a steal for the price."  Vinous (d'Agata) 91 points

"Plenty of cooked pineapple and pear aromas with some pumice and rock undertones. Full body, layered and flavorful with lots of sliced lemon and green apple character. A vivid and flavorful wine. Drink now."  James Suckling 93 points

Le Chai Duchet Vire Clesse 2015 Product #32888 (In Stock)
Le Chai Duchet Vire Clesse 2015 Le Chai Duchet Vire Clesse 2015

In just the 3rd vintage made and bottled by young Alexis Duchet, this wine already shows the very high quality of the family’s organically farmed vineyards and the character of the chalky limestone soils of the Macon’s Vire-Clesse AOC.  Alexis pulls fruit for his AOC Vire-Clesse from four sites near the village of Vire, all planted to Chardonnay vines now 60 years old or older.  Winemaking is dead simple:  gentle pressing, native yeasts, fermentation in stainless steel and then up to 12 months aging in concrete tanks.

There’s nothing simple about the wine, though.  In the warm, ripe, 2015 harvest, this shows a bit more breadth and generosity than the typical Vire-Clesse, with lovely scents and flavors of stone fruit – peach, apricot, nectarine – over chalky stone and topped with a captivating hint of fruit blossoms.  The texture is rich and round on the palate but lacks nothing in energy, minerality, and drive.  Delicious to drink on its own, for sure, but try it with shellfish, roast chicken or anything with a handful of mushrooms for a real treat!

Le Chai Duchet Vire Clesse Quintessance 2015 Product #32889 (In Stock)
Le Chai Duchet Vire Clesse Quintessance 2015 Le Chai Duchet Vire Clesse Quintessance 2015

Holy cow and zowie – this is just plain great Chardonnay!  "Quintessence" means "the most perfect or typical example of a quality or class" or "a refined essence or extract."  This is the Quintessence of Vire-Clesse.  It’s from a 4 acre plot of 80 year-old Chardonnay planted to incredible density – a whopping 4,400 vines per acre. Alexis Duchet farms this site organically with natural treatments for pests and the soil worked by horse-drawn plow.  Fermentation in stainless steal with the yeast from the vineyard and winery is followed by 10-12 months aging in concrete tank.  Natural, pure, simple.

Nothing simple about the wine, though.  The aromas and flavors are deep, complex, and satisfying with layers of ripe stone fruit, buttered pear, crushed hazelnut and salty mineral.  But structure and texture are what really excites here.  The wine enters with a prickle-point of acid, fans out to envelope and coat your palate with richness, and then snaps back into lazer-like minerally focus as fresh citrus acids bring up the rear.  And the finish goes on and on and your mouth waters gently and flavors of stone fruit, pear, apple, hazelnut and mint linger for a minute-plus.  A great wine right now that will certainly age nicely – but why wait?

Secret Squirrel Columbia Valley Bordeaux Blend 2014 Product #32890 (In Stock)
Secret Squirrel Columbia Valley Bordeaux Blend 2014 Secret Squirrel Columbia Valley Bordeaux Blend 2014

The Corliss family owns two premier Washington State wineries.  Corliss is located in the Red Mountain AVA and focuses on Cabernet Sauvignon and Bordeaux varietals.  Tranche is in the Blue Mountains and does mainly Rhone blends.  The owners are VERY particular and selective of which barrels go into their flagship wines, especially at Corliss where the focus is on making very long-lived Cab blends.  Barrels that are too full of fruit, soft and supple for the big wines are blended after 14+ months in new and a little used French oak.

While Corliss won’t reveal the full “secret” of this blend, we know it’s mainly Red Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon plus Merlot, Cab Franc, Petit Verdot and Malbec from Corliss and Tranche.  In the warm, ripe, rich 2014 vintage it’s a warm, ripe, rich wine.  Aromas of ripe blackberries and sage, with a hint of coffee invite you to take a sip. The flavors are bold, dark and rich, with powerful flavors of blackberry, black currant and dark plum accented by notes of tobacco and spice.  Despite all these dark, rich flavors, the fruit flavors are vibrant and exciting and the finish is firm enough for a steak, but not too firm to sip alone. You won’t want to keep this a secret!

Ridge Cabernet Sauvignon Santa Cruz Estate 2014 Product #32920 (In Stock)

"One of the many highlights in this range, the 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate is terrific. The effects of the drought and resulting heat stress come through in the wine's structural feel and bold, incisive flavors. Even with all of its intensity, the 2014 has a certain silkiness in its tannins that makes it approachable today. Of course, the 2014 will be even better in another few years, but opening a bottle on the early side is not a crime. The 2014 spent 27 months in French oak. Readers who are looking for a more affordable alternative to Ridge's iconic Monte Bello should consider the 2014 Estate. Look for the Estate to be a real overachiever in 2014 as well as one of the best - possibly the best - California Cabernet in its price range."  Vinous (Galloni) 93 points
