Powerful Pommard Pinot from Patty Green

Winemakers Patricia Green and Jim Anderson bottled more than 20 different Willamette Valley Pinot Noirs in the stellar 2015 vintage. For me, these four wines – all based mainly on the old-school Pommard Pinot Noir clone – stand out for their ability to tell the story of the amazing 2015 vintage and Oregon’s uniquely soil and location specific wines.  All have 2015's amazing ripeness, plenty of fresh fruit, and the kind of acid/tannin balance that sings with food and promotes years of in-cellar development.  Production levels are low and quantities limited, so reserve yours at our best mix/match six and 12 bottle prices right now.

Patricia Green Pinot Noir Volcanic Cuvee 2015 Product #32034 (In Stock)
Patricia Green Pinot Noir Volcanic Cuvee 2015 Patricia Green Pinot Noir Volcanic Cuvee 2015

While Patty Green's best known Estate and Freedom Hill sites are on marine sediment soils, she and co-winemaker Jim Anderson also make some blockbusters from volcanic soils in the Dundee Hills.  This showcases and highlights the dark, smoky, character of these volcanic sites using fruit from Balcombe, Durant, and Weber vineyards.  All Pommard from vines at least 38 years old, this gets a touch of whole cluster fermentation but no new oak to allows the signature of site to shine through.

So, that deep, dark, smoky note you get on the nose and palate?  That's the soil talking (not oak).  Asian spice and purple flower notes add complexity to the intense dark raspberry and black cherry fruit.  For all the ripeness of the old vines and 2015 vintage, this remains vibrant and fresh and finishes with lingering notes of sweet fruit, smoke, spice and fine-grained tannins.  My note from tasting it with Jim Anderson back in March:  "I want to drink this!" 332 cases made.

Patricia Green Pinot Noir Estate Old Vines 2015 Product #32035 (In Stock)
Patricia Green Pinot Noir Estate Old Vines 2015 Patricia Green Pinot Noir Estate Old Vines 2015

One of the best sites in Oregon's most exciting AVA, Ribbon Ridge, Patricia  Green's Estate vineyard sits on Wellsford soils - a marine sediment that's very fine, almost talc-like.  These thin, exceedingly well drained, soils are perfect for older vines that dig their roots down deep to the water and mineral sources below.  This bottling showcases the oldest vines here, own-rooted Pommard clone Pinot planted between 1984 - 1990.

Even in warm, sunny, ripe vintage 2015, these old vines always deliver an amazing streak of minerality on the palate and nose.  The aromas are Burgundian, with dark griotte cherry fruit framed by notes of earth, mineral and spice.  On the palate the wine shows fine grip and intensity, with a rich mouthfeel and plenty of raspberry/cherry fruit plus black pepper spice.  As Vinous said of the 92 point 2014, it's "At once concentrated and nervy, finishing with excellent focus and suave, late-arriving tannins."  Very exciting in 2015.  About 1,000 cases made.

Patricia Green Pinot Noir Durant Bishop Block 2015 Product #32037 (In Stock)
Patricia Green Pinot Noir Durant Bishop Block 2015 Patricia Green Pinot Noir Durant Bishop Block 2015

In some ways, this is the partner to the Estate Old Vines Pinot.  Where that showcases old-vine Pommard on Ribbon Ridge's talc-like marine sediments, Durant is all about very old-vine Pommard (42 years) growing on Dundee Hills' red volcanic soils.  As Patty and Jim write, "These now monster vines were planted back in 1973 making them some of the oldest vines in Oregon. This wine knows exactly what it wants to be. This is finesse, subtleness, elegance and discreet balance all backed up by a sneaky and looming firmness that comes on in the back of the wine. Only older vines make wines like this. This is not a wine that needs to make a dramatic entrance because all the work is done on the back end."

With just a touch of whole cluster and little new oak, this is a wildly in tense and complex follow-up to 2014's 93 point (Vinous) edition.  Dark and chewy, it layers black fruit, lavender, melted licorice, rose oil, meat juice and iron aromas and flavors on the nose and palate.  The energy builds through a finish that's long, deep, and mouthwatering, leaving tangy cherry, floral and smoke flavors lingering.  As Vinous said of the 2014, "I really like this wine's marriage of power and vivacity."  318 cases made
