Powerful Pommard Pinot from Patty Green

Winemakers Patricia Green and Jim Anderson bottled more than 20 different Willamette Valley Pinot Noirs in the stellar 2015 vintage. For me, these four wines – all based mainly on the old-school Pommard Pinot Noir clone – stand out for their ability to tell the story of the amazing 2015 vintage and Oregon’s uniquely soil and location specific wines.  All have 2015's amazing ripeness, plenty of fresh fruit, and the kind of acid/tannin balance that sings with food and promotes years of in-cellar development.  Production levels are low and quantities limited, so reserve yours at our best mix/match six and 12 bottle prices right now.

Patricia Green Pinot Noir Estate Old Vines 2015 Product #32035 (In Stock)
Patricia Green Pinot Noir Estate Old Vines 2015 Patricia Green Pinot Noir Estate Old Vines 2015

The late Patty Green and her partner/winemaker, Jim Anderson, are all about getting site into bottle.  They make 20+ wines featuring unique vineyards and clones from sites across the Willamette Valley.  And they make 4 different wines from their own, 30 acre, vineyard in Ribbon Ridge.  This bottling features the oldest vines on the property, five different blocks of Pommard Clone Pinot Noir planted on their own roots in five different blocks.

"One-third whole clusters and 8% new French oak. Deep, lurid red. Sexy red berry liqueur, incense and Asian spice aromas are complemented by subtle cola and candied rose notes. Silky, smooth and penetrating on the palate, offering concentrated raspberry, bitter cherry and spicecake flavors that become sweeter as the wine opens up. Seamless and densely packed yet lively as well, finishing with strong red fruit thrust and velvety tannins that arrive late."  Vinous (Raynolds) 93 points

"Expressive and beautifully built, with raspberry and rose petal aromas and plush, structured flavors of cherry, spiced cinnamon and dark tea that build power. Shows a slight bite of tannins toward the finish. Drink now through 2023."Wine Spectator 93 points

Patricia Green Pinot Noir Durant Bishop Block 2015 Product #32037 (In Stock)
Patricia Green Pinot Noir Durant Bishop Block 2015 Patricia Green Pinot Noir Durant Bishop Block 2015

In some ways, this is the partner to the Estate Old Vines Pinot.  Where that showcases old-vine Pommard on Ribbon Ridge's talc-like marine sediments, Durant is all about very old-vine Pommard (42 years) growing on Dundee Hills' red volcanic soils.  As Patty and Jim write, "These now monster vines were planted back in 1973 making them some of the oldest vines in Oregon. This wine knows exactly what it wants to be. This is finesse, subtleness, elegance and discreet balance all backed up by a sneaky and looming firmness that comes on in the back of the wine. Only older vines make wines like this. This is not a wine that needs to make a dramatic entrance because all the work is done on the back end."

With just a touch of whole cluster and little new oak, this is a wildly in tense and complex follow-up to 2014's 93 point (Vinous) edition.  Dark and chewy, it layers black fruit, lavender, melted licorice, rose oil, meat juice and iron aromas and flavors on the nose and palate.  The energy builds through a finish that's long, deep, and mouthwatering, leaving tangy cherry, floral and smoke flavors lingering.

"(20% whole clusters and 8% new French oak) Limpid ruby-red. Highly aromatic red fruit, potpourri and Asian spice scents, along with a smoky mineral overtone. Juicy, lithe and precise on the palate, offering sweet black raspberry, rose pastille and spicecake flavors that deepen and spread out slowly with aeration. Delivers a suave blend of power and elegance and finishes with resonating spiciness, harmonious tannins and outstanding clarity and floral-driven persistence." Vinous (Raynolds) 94 points
