Dom Louis Michel Chablis 2015 Dom Louis Michel Chablis 2015

Year-in, year-out, this is one of the most satisfying “village” level Chablis we carry.  In 2015 there’s a bit more volume and richness, but still plenty of classic steely Chablis cut and focus.  Fresh aromas of white fruits, Key lime, apple and more waft from the glass.  More mouthfilling and powerful than in 2014, the wine paints your pallet with ripe apple and fresh peach fruit with a nice lift of tangy apricot and lemon for freshness.  No oak or lees stirring in 2015 to interfere with the intensely fresh and ripe fruit but plenty of salty stone minerality on the clean, lingering, finish.  This will make a fantastic “house white” this Spring – Fall and delight on its own, with shellfish, or even with savory grilled chicken.

Dom Louis Michel Chablis 1er Cru Vaillons 2015 Product #32061 (In Stock)
Dom Louis Michel Chablis 1er Cru Vaillons 2015 Dom Louis Michel Chablis 1er Cru Vaillons 2015

In a challenging year like 2015, older vines can make all the difference - as these 35-50 year-old vines on the richer, deeper, soils of the Vaillons hill did here.  The aromas here are very pure and deep with yellow fruits (peach, apricot) and lots of just struck flint minerality.  It's very rich and round on the palate - the 12.9% alcohol is on the high side here - with deep fruit shading towards the tropical before fresh squeezed lemon and lime citrus elevate the flavors with a juicy pop.  The finish is nicely dry, focused, and minerally fresh with enough mouthwatering action to pull you back for another sip.  You can certainly enjoy this right now and will get more flinty, salty, Chablis minerality over the next 3-4 years.

Dom Louis Michel Chablis 1er Cru Forets 2015 Product #32062 (In Stock)
Dom Louis Michel Chablis 1er Cru Forets 2015 Dom Louis Michel Chablis 1er Cru Forets 2015

Forets has always been one of our favorite 1er Cru wines from Louis Michel, and vintage 2015 is no exception. The estate's Forets vines grow in shallow soils, with just a few centimeters of pour, stony, soil covering the limestone rock of the hill.  In 2015 there's lots of salty Chablis minerality on the nose - so much so that you'd almost think the wine was made in oak instead of stainless steel.  In the mouth, it's muscular and intense with apple, citrus and stone fruit flavors framed by notes of crushed sea shell and a hint of dried herb honey.  Delicious now but clearly better from 2019 as the minerality emerges.

Dom Louis Michel Chablis 1er Cru Montee Tonnerre 2015 Product #32063 (In Stock)
Dom Louis Michel Chablis 1er Cru Montee Tonnerre 2015 Dom Louis Michel Chablis 1er Cru Montee Tonnerre 2015

Back in 2010, critic Steve Tanzer explained why Montee de Tonnere is the wine to buy.  “If this vineyard does not quite reach the level of the region’s grand crus in depth and sheer palate presence, it often does in aromatic complexity and class. In a perfect classification system, it would be ranked between premier and grand cru. Why should you care? In a word: value. Because Chablis usually is significantly cheaper than white Burgundy from the Côte de Beaune in the first place, the best examples of Montée de Tonnerre can offer remarkable quality/price rapport. If Chablis is the insider’s white Burgundy, then Montée de Tonnerre is the insider’s Chablis premier cru.”

In the warm 2015 vintage, Montee de Tonnerre is youthfully compact  and dense, so expect to give it some air or 3 or so years in cellar to really see it shine.  Right now it's already enticing with aromas of pretty white flowers, pear, green apple and mineral.  It's dense and packed in on the palate, but it clearly shows the essence of great Chablis with deep fruit, a bit of citrus oil, and layer upon layer of salty, chalky, minerality.  Highly recommended and possibly the best value of this entire offering.
