Very Grand Grand Cru Champagne from Eric Rodez

Breathtaking.  Intense.  A little bit mind-blowing.  Those terms all apply to my first ever sit-down visit with Eric Rodez last year.  And they certainly apply to the newest releases of his Grand Cru Champagnes!
Along with new releases of your favorites, that there’s a new (to us) wine: the astonishingly Burgundy-like Champagne Pinot Noir Les Genettes 2010.  If you already know Eric’s wines, you’re already skipping down below to see what’s available (click here – it’s all your favorites!) and put together your order.

If you haven’t tried them yet, here’s what you need to know:  They are some of the most rich, complex, profound Champagnes you’ll find anywhere and yet somehow still cost a lot less than they should.  Eric trained at Krug and his winemaking draws on that experience. All of his Champagnes include some barrel fermented base wine (up to 100%) for richness, complexity and spice.  And, you’ll find plenty of site-specific character here, with the finesse and elegance of Eric’s 15 acre Grand Cru vineyard in Ambonnay shining through.

Mix/match Eric's Champagnes for best six and 12-bottle prices.  Mixed six/case savings won't display on your online order form or confirmation, but will be applied before your card is charged.

Eric Rodez Ambonnay Cuvee Des Crayeres NV Product #13997 (In Stock)
Eric Rodez Ambonnay Cuvee Des Crayeres NV Eric Rodez Ambonnay Cuvee Des Crayeres NV

Last year's release is singing with a year in bottle! It's a 60/40 blend of Grand Cru Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, with about 40% aged in barrel and 60% allowed to go through malolactic fermentation.  About 50% of the blend is from reserve wines going back to the mid-2000s.  With 5+ years on the lees and dosage in the 3-4 g/l range, it’s a classy, elegant, and very pure bottle of bubbly.

This year’s release beautiful to look at with a bright brass color, great transparency and shine, and very, very, tiny and persistent buttles.  The aromas are ultra-pure, featuring fresh bread dough, apricot, peach, pear and spice with hints of fresh hazelnut for complexity.  The flavors are complex, too, with fresh lemon, stone fruit, key lime, and green apple fruit notes with accents of salty (not sweet) caramel, toast and spice.  The texture is very fine and sliky and the finish very, very long, with fresh lemon pulp and salty hazelnut notes lingering on and on.  Enjoy it right now for its citrusy freshness or let it rest for 3-4 years to pick up still more ginger, baked pear, and toasty, nutty, complexity.

Eric Rodez Ambonnay Cuvee Des Grands Vintages NV Product #13994 (In Stock)
Eric Rodez Ambonnay Cuvee Des Grands Vintages NV Eric Rodez Ambonnay Cuvee Des Grands Vintages NV

As the name suggests, Eric Rodez’s Grand Vintages is a rich, powerful and very much “grand” wine in the tradition of Krug (where Eric learned his craft).  This year's release is a blend of 70% Pinot Noir and 30% Chardonnay from seven great vintages going back to vintage 2000.  Eric ages all of these base wines in used oak and blocks malolactic fermentation to maximize freshness and vibrancy.  Then the carefully crafted blend spends 8 full years on the lees before being disgorged this October. The dosage is ultra-low - 2 or 3 g/l - so this could be labeled "Extra Brut," but there's so much richness and depth here that "Brut" seems more appropriate to Eric.

Past releases have earned plenty of critical praise, including 17.5/20 points from Jancis Robinson, 93 from Vinous, and 92 from Wine Advocate.  This year’s release is explosive on the nose and palate, pumping out big notes of lemon curd, caramel, toasted nuts, baking bread, crushed chalk, and more.  The flavors just balloon out to fill your entire palate and finish with layer upon layer of mouthwatering pie crust, lemon curd, hazelnut, crushed stone and salty caramel flavor.  Try holding some for even more richness!

Eric Rodez Ambonnay Grand Cru Millesime 2007 Product #30333 (In Stock)
Eric Rodez Ambonnay Grand Cru Millesime 2007 Eric Rodez Ambonnay Grand Cru Millesime 2007

The last vintage ever of this cuvee as Eric shifts his attention to single-vineyard vintage wines.  This is just a lovely wine that blends 58% Pinot Noir and 42% Chardonnay, with all but 10% fermented and aged in barrel. After 7 years on the lees, it's a shimmery gold color with tiny, precise, bubbles.  Big aromas of orchard and stone fruit with accents of fresh cut hay, brioche, and toasted  nut lead to a precise, crisp, palate of pear, citrus, nuts, toast, and more.  Rich, but not heavy, and very long, this delicious dry Champagne is lovely now and will continue to improve for years.

Eric Rodez Empreinte De Terroir Pinot Noir 2005 Product #32752 (In Stock)
Eric Rodez Empreinte De Terroir Pinot Noir 2005 Eric Rodez Empreinte De Terroir Pinot Noir 2005

Eric's Empreinte De Terroir series is designed to showcase the unique character of his Grand Cru Ambonnay vineyard in a single vintage - in this case, the generously textured and very easy to love 2005 harvest.  From 30 year-old Pinot Noir vines, it is 100% barrel fermented and aged and spends 8 years on the lees before disgorgement with just 2 g/l dosage.

As always, the 2005 shows a copper-tinged color with extremely fine bubbles.  Aromas of cherries, red flowers, and toast explode from the glass.  In the mouth it’s even more deep, rich, and robust than usual with complex flavors of red fruits, graphite and baked bread.  The flavors drive to a seemingly endless finish as hints of red raspberry and toast linger.  While fascinating to drink on its own, this would pair wonderfully with duck or any dish featuring wild mushrooms.  This will just get better in cellar over the next decade or so.

Eric Rodez Champagne Pinot Noir Les Genettes 2010 Product #32753 (In Stock)
Eric Rodez Champagne Pinot Noir Les Genettes 2010 Eric Rodez Champagne Pinot Noir Les Genettes 2010

From a single plot of 41 year-old vines in the tiny Les Genettes site have plenty to say.  As is the custom in Eric's top wines, this was 100% barrel fermented and aged, has zero malolactic, and received a very light 3 grams/liter dosage at bottling. Pure gold in the glass with tiny bubbles, this shows elegant aromas of griotte cherry, toast, and fresh earth.  On the palate it's tight, focused, and ultra pure, with laser tight focus and a finish that won't quit.  Luxurious, delicious now, and worth following for another half-decade.

"Cool, calm and collected on the nose. Tight and dense - almost more like a sparkling Beaune. And that's a compliment!"  Jancis Robinson 17.5/20 points
