St Kilda Chardonnay Southeastern Australia 2016 Product #32033 (In Stock)
St Kilda Chardonnay Southeastern Australia 2016 St Kilda Chardonnay Southeastern Australia 2016

St. Kilda Chardonnay pretty much exacly what you hope for (but don't often get) in a fine value Chardonnay: refreshing, fruit filled, and balanced.  Take a sniff and enjoy the aromas of ripe pineapple and golden delicious apple. Take a sip and enjoy those same ripe fruit flavors along with just a hint of oak, just enough to round out the flavors and add a hint of nutty complexity; just enough to make the wine really say “Chardonnay” and not “anonymous cheap white wine.”

It finishes fresh and mouthwateringly clean, with just a touch of juicy apple flavor lingering on your palate. If you’ve got a crowd descending on your house for a Mothers’ Day, graduation, or upcoming Fathers’ Day gathering, this is a wine to stock up on a case or two. You’ll have it to pull out any time you need something to serve at a party or just crack open at the end of a long day.

Dom De La Bastide Cotes Du Rhone Rose 2016 Product #32008 (In Stock)
Dom De La Bastide Cotes Du Rhone Rose 2016 Dom De La Bastide Cotes Du Rhone Rose 2016

Here’s the bottom line:  if you love great Provençal rosé, then you’re going to flip for this wine and struggle to believe how inexpensive it is.  In what’s shaping up to be the finest French rosé vintage of at least the past decade, Baside’s Cotes du Rhone Rosé competes with some of the finest wines of the vintage on quality and simply crushes even average bottlings on price.

We’ve come to really love the simple, clean, approach Vincent and Stephanie Boyer bring to growing and making wine.  They farm family vineyards in and around Vissan, a cooler slice of the Southern Rhone not far from the foothills of the Alps.  They grow their grapes organically, keep yields low, and do as little as possible in the winery to allow the quality of their fruit to shine through in your glass.  The 2016 Rose is 70% Grenache, 20% Syrah, and 10% Cinsault and 100% delicious.  Huge aromas of strawberry, peach, watermelon, cherry and dusty herb really explode from your glass.  Then those mid-summer fruit flavors fill every nook and cranny of your mouth with extra lift from notes of citrus zest, more herb, and watermelon rind pickle – sweet, sour and spicy.  The finish is chalky, mouthwatering and dry, pulling you back for sip after sip.

Ch Haut-Pasquet Bordeaux Blanc 2016 Product #32020 (In Stock)
Ch Haut-Pasquet Bordeaux Blanc 2016 Ch Haut-Pasquet Bordeaux Blanc 2016

Back in the old days, pretty much all white Bordeaux was a blend of the region’s three complementary grapes:  Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon, and Muscadelle.  As Loire Valley and New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc became more popular in the 1980s, Bordeaux growers began phasing out first Muscadelle (too hard to grow) and then Semillon (usually pulled up in favor of Cabernet and Merlot).  The resulting Sauvignon-dominant (or 100% Sauvignon) white Bordeauxs can be a lot of refreshing, pool-side, fun – but they lack more traditional wine’s complexity of flavors and mellow, food-friendly, textures.

So, finding a traditional blend like this one is a real treat, especially at this great value price.  Give it a swirl and you’ll find a classic white Bordeaux nose of lemon/tangerine fruit, grapefruit pith, a bit of fresh mown grass, and the note of wet wool that Semillon brings to Bordeaux.  With air, a note of passion fruit and crushed savory herb emerges.  It’s light to medium-bodied and very fresh and happy in the mouth with flavors of lemon drop, tangerine, crushed herb and passion fruit puree.  On the finish, the fresh lemon and lime zest character comes forward and you’ll notice your mouth watering as the lemon and herb flavors linger on.   A lovely wine for any shellfish and herb dish or for salads with goat cheese.

Bodegas Ego Goru Verde Monastrell Jumilla 2015 Product #32065 (In Stock)

Our first thought on tasting this robust Spanish red:  What a great burger wine!  The more we’ve tasted and enjoyed it, though, the more we’re thinking this is just a flat out great all-around red for parties, cookouts, and evening sipping.  It’s a rich and fruity red with good heft and a gentle earthy complexity.  Dark raspberry and blueberry fruit make up the wine’s core with a nice touch of oak spice and a dry, almost raspberry-juice tangy, finish.  The creamy texture and long finish distinguish this from most inexpensive reds.  There’s more than enough immediate pleasure here to make this fun to drink casually and enough complexity to keep you coming back for more.

“A dense and oaky nose with high spice and bright earthy beetroot. The palate is authentic and characterful with blueberry fruit and a pleasing creaminess reminiscent of raspberry ripple ice cream.”  Decanter Magazine 91 points

Jackhammer Chardonnay Central Coast 2014 Product #32025 (In Stock)
Jackhammer Chardonnay Central Coast 2014 Jackhammer Chardonnay Central Coast 2014

The Dooley and Garber families created Jackhammer in 2011 for a simple reason:  there just wasn't enough California Pinot and Chard available that was both good and affordable.  We have no idea why they thought this brand name communicated that, but this no-oak Central Coast Chardonnay is a winner!  It's loaded with ripe apple, pear and citrus fruit aromas and flavors, sports a nicely plump and mouthfilling texture, and finishes juicy, mouthwatering and dry.  A great Spring/Summer Chardonnay option for sipping and seafood. No oak, but plenty of fun!

Ponga Pinot Noir Marlborough New Zealand 2014 Product #32014 (In Stock)

"Inexpensive" seldom applies to Pinot Noir that's either "New Zealand" or "good tasting" - but that's what we've got here!  This is unmistakably New Zealand Pinot with boisterous red berry and cherry fruit on the nose and palate with light touches of spice and fresh-turned earth.  There's enough tannin for food and a juicy, mouthwatering, finish that welcomes solo sipping - perhaps even better with a light chill.  Fun, tasty, cheap - a winner!

High Note Andes Red Blend Mendoza 2013 Product #32047 (In Stock)

"Bright, medium-deep red. Expressive aromas of blackberry, dark chocolate and licorice; there's something Napa-like about the glossy torrefaction notes. Sweet, supple and nicely concentrated, with a pliant texture giving this wine plenty of early appeal. But the dark fruit flavors are nicely supported by substantial ripe, oak-influenced tannins. Delivers good stuffing for the price."   Vinous (Raynolds) 88 points

Dom Du Val Lamartinien Macon Prisse 2015 Product #32048 (In Stock)

Macon Villages can be a nice step up from "regular" Macon, as you'll easily taste here in this generous, well made, example from vintage 2015.  Loads of ripe pear, apple and hazelnut aromas pull you into a rich, creamy, palate featuring stone fruit, grilled pineapple and a hint of nut.  The finish punches above the price point, with mouthwatering acids, fine length, and a dusty, chalky, minerality.

Garciarevalo Casamaro Verdejo Rueda 2016 Product #32064 (In Stock)
Garciarevalo Casamaro Verdejo Rueda 2016 Garciarevalo Casamaro Verdejo Rueda 2016

It's hard to imagine how a scorching hot, bone dry, region like Northern Spain's Rueda can turn out such vibrant, fresh, thirst-quenching wines - but it does!  This blends 10% of Rioja's Viura with Rueda's on Verdejo, both from vines from 15 to 140 years old.  Picked in the cool of the night, fermented in tank, and bottled with no other manipulation, this serves up generous aromas and flavors of apricot, peach and tangerine.  A hint of prickly CO2, juicy acids and refreshing citrus pith make your mouth water and hand reach back for another sip.  A great warm-weather refresher and terrific with seafood and afternoon nibbles.

Ch De Castelneau Entre Deux Mers 2015 Product #31884 (In Stock)

Often overlooked, the white wines of Bordeaux's Entre-Deux-Mers ("between the seas") region can be perfect wines for everyday meals or sipping with friends.  Most Entre-Deux-Mers are all, or nearly all, Sauignon Blanc, but this little gem mimics more serious (and expensive!) white Bordeaux by including 40% Semillon and 10% Muscadelle in the blend.  On the nose and palate you get hints of the famous wet wool that adds complexity and depth to Sauvignon's citrusy fruit and herbal notes.  Smooth and ripe, this is fun to drink and works well with seafood and poultry dishes.

Castello La Leccia Vivai Del Cavaliere Toscana Rosso 2015 Product #32021 (In Stock)
Castello La Leccia Vivai Del Cavaliere Toscana Rosso 2015 Castello La Leccia Vivai Del Cavaliere Toscana Rosso 2015

An estate dating from 1077 is going to have deep roots, but it's especially exciting when a strong sense of tradition gets paired with a touch of modern innovation. Owner/winegrower  Francesco Daddi has gone "back to the future" a bit by converting this prime estate near Castellina in Chianti to 100% organic farming and returning to the practice of blending Malvasia Nera with his Chianti Sangiovese.

Here he innovates by selecting small lots of what could be Chianti Classico, giving them a lighter extraction and then bottling 85% Sangiovese and 15% Malvasia with zero time in oak.  The result is a festive, fun, wine that's bursting with juicy black cherry, a hint of licorice root, and lots of floral complexity.  The structure is friendly - fresh and lightly tannic - inviting solo sipping with a light chill or warming it up and airing it out to pair with richer foods.  Delicious stuff.

What happens with a bicycle-racing winemaker in Sicily meets a bunch of French Laundry alums who run an elevated casual Italian restaurant in Colorado?  In this case, yumminess ensues!  From vineyards at about 3,000 feet elevation in Western Sicily, this is rich Nero d'Avola (75%) and Nerello Mascallese made in tank - two grapes that only really shine in Sicily!  It really pops with ripe, juicy, red currant and cherry fruit layered with sweet spice and a touch of enlivening herb.  Finishing clean and very fresh, it's a fun solo sipper and a great match for any warm weather food.

Errazuriz Carmenere Max Reserva 2015 Product #32050 (In Stock)

A great example of the old Bordeaux varietal Carmenere as grown in meticulously farmed vineyards in Chile.  Fresh blue and black fruit gets lift and complexity from a handful of tobacco and dried herb and support from firm, lightly chewy, tannins. The generous fruit and touch of minerality nicely balances Carmenere's typical tobacco notes. A fine match for lamb and excellent value.

Dom Philippe Plantevin Cotes Du Rhone Rouge 2015 Product #32017 (In Stock)

A 50/50 blend of Grenache and Syrah, and in the great 2015 vintage, it’s one of the sexiest releases of this robust Rhone we’ve tasted yet.  Big, Rhone-ish, aromas here with a big dose of black raspberry and black cherry, a touch of dried plum, a punch of dark chocolate, and a beguiling accent of candied violets.  The wine completely envelops your palate with ripe fruit that remains remarkably fresh – think crushed raspberry, mid-season cherry, and black plums just plucked from the tree.  And, like any really fine wine, it’s better still on the killer finish where tangy cherry, chocolate, red plum, and smoked stone flavors sail on over fine-grained tannins.  About as versatile and food friendly as Cotes du Rhone gets, you’ll love this with summer burgers and find yourself reaching for a bottle to drink with pizza, sausages, lamb, and more for at least the next 4-5 years.

As always, an amazing amount of pure, no-oak, Chardonnnay for the money.

"The highlight in this range from Foxglove, the 2014 Chardonnay packs a serious punch for the money. Bright, juicy and exuberant, the Foxglove Chardonnay will thrill readers looking for a budget-priced Chardonnay. Lemon peel, white flowers and mint meld together in a rich, beautifully layered Chardonnay long on class. Aging in steel and blocked malolactic fermentation keep the flavors bright, but there is no shortage of depth or intensity. This is a fabulous wine, especially considering its modest price."
