An outstanding in real Madeira for sipping or use in rich sauces or soups.  The light tawny color and heady aromas and flavors of toasted nuts, dark caramel, and burnt orange peel come from barrel aging and exposure to high heat for 3+ months - the process that "Madeirizes" the wine and creates its distinctive tang.  Lightly sweet to balance the zingy acids.

Fracchia Voulet Malvasia Di Casorzo D'asti 2016 Product #32271 (In Stock)

This delicious frizzante wine is a rare version of red Malvasia, made with a touch of sweetness and a light, frothy, sparkle. As The Washington Post’s Dave McIntyre said about the 2011, “This delightful little frizzante red from Piedmont is a cousin to Brachetto d’Acqui, and equal to Brachetto in its affinity for chocolate." As always, the lightly sweet red raspberry and strawberry fruit is a delight!

Quinta De La Rosa Lote 601 Ruby Reserve NV (500ml) Product #32682 (In Stock)
Quinta De La Rosa Lote 601 Ruby Reserve NV (500ml) Quinta De La Rosa Lote 601 Ruby Reserve NV (500ml)

What happens with an old Port house decides that instead of making a harsh, alcoholic, sticky-sweet, Ruby Port to be drunk by people who've already drunk too much - why not make a really great wine?  That's what's happening here at an estate that uses grapes that really ought to be in 20 Year Tawny or Vintage Port to create simply the best Ruby we've ever tasted!

Using only A-rated, estate-owned, vineyards they create a Ruby that's complex, layered, nutty, and finishes dry and fresh.  There's superb complexity to the nutty raspberry and Bing cherry fruit with layer upon layer of nutty caramel, spice and a gloriously dry, lightly tannic, finish.  It's the kind of wine you come back to again and again and will be especially delicious cool. Keeps nicely for a week or so on the counter and for a month-plus in the fridge.  Do not miss this!

Quinta De La Rosa Tawny NV (500ml) Product #32683 (In Stock)
Quinta De La Rosa Tawny NV (500ml) Quinta De La Rosa Tawny NV (500ml)

Astonishing quality for the money here in a Tawny Port made from grapes most growers would use for Vintage wines.  Port vineyards are graded from F (barely acceptable) to A (best of the best), and most straight Tawny Port comes from C, D and F-rated sites.  Quinta de la Rosa only owns A-rated vineyards and only makes wine from the grapes they grow.  Which is why this bold Tawny is so dark in color and richly delicious to taste.

It's a blend of wines aged three to four years in 500 liter Port "pipes" and blended each year for consistent style.  Dark tawny red in color, it pumps out intense aromas and flavors of dark fruit, rich honey, molasses and toasted nuts.  Rich and sweet in the middle, a bit of burnt orange peel comes up on the finish to provide balance and bite.  Lasts a week or so on the counter and several months in the fridge after opening.  What a treat!

First, yes - this is a full 750ml bottle!  It's also a fascinating take on white Port.  Because the white wine aged in wood for 8 years, this drinks like a fantastically vibrant, youthful, tawney Port.  Full of dried apricot and raisin fruit and lightly caramelized walnut and almond flavors, it's lightly sweet and super long on the palate.  Delicous!

Xavier Muscat de Beaumes de Venise 2015 500ml Product #32100 (In Stock)
Xavier Muscat de Beaumes de Venise 2015 500ml Xavier Muscat de Beaumes de Venise 2015 500ml

This famous Rhone consultant makes small amounts of great wine from grapes taken from his clients in payment.  This is delicious right now solo or with fruit.

"Tasting just like the 2014, only richer and sweeter (although Xavier told me the goal here is less obvious sweetness), the 2015 Muscat de Beaumes de Venise offers a stunning nose of white peach, honeysuckle, sugar water and apricot. Full-bodied, rich, unctuous and decadent, with a big mid-palate and nicely balanced sweetness, drink it over the coming couple of years."Wine Advocate 93 points

Quinta Do Noval Late Bottled Vintage 2011 Product #31430 (In Stock)
Quinta Do Noval Late Bottled Vintage 2011 Quinta Do Noval Late Bottled Vintage 2011

Ready to drink to night or cellar for a decade.  Brilliant stuff from the great 2011 harvest.

"The 2011 Unfiltered Late Bottled Vintage Port, a typical Douro blend, was bottled in 2016 with a long cork and 101 grams per liter of residual sugar after five years in barrel. This is brilliant. Sappy, intensely concentrated, remarkably complex and beautifully structured, this young LBV has plenty of room to grow in the cellar, too. It is young, unevolved and capable of development. The complexity that it has now, with a trace of herbs, rhubarb and generally classic Port flavors, is a hallmark, but that will increase and become more varied with age. The tannic pop will also calm a bit more, not that this is undrinkable now. This reeks of potential. Noval is one of my favorite unfiltered LBV producers and this is a fine moment for it. With a few years of bottle age, it might even seem better as it acquires more complexity."Wine Advocate 93 points

Super rich, dense, and sticky, this Pedro Ximenez Sherry from a solera started in 1927 delivers wildly complex aromas and flavors. Try it with maple ice cream or savory cheese.

"The NV Pedro Ximenez Solera 1927 is non-vintage, but does have some 1927 material in it. This is totally dark brown/amber with notes of figs, toffee, caramel syrup, molasses and coffee. It is dense, super sweet, intense, rich and an amazingly, unctuously textured, thick beverage to consume slowly and introspectively after a meal. Maynard's Port Tawny 20 Year Product #30550 (In Stock)
Maynard's Port Tawny 20 Year Maynard's Port Tawny 20 Year

A great example of what is perhaps the most classic style of “wood aged” or “Tawny” Port.  Winemaker Alvaro van Zeller, formerly winemaker at Quinta do Noval, blends this from Port lots that have aged in barrel about 20 years on average.  Plenty of richness and depth here but also a lively note of burnt orange peel and even a touch of fresh red berry.  A delicious value!

"Maynard’s is a brand from Alvaro van Zeller of Barão de Vilar. This 20-year-old is lush in its sweetness, with candied orange peel scents and ripe strawberry flavors that evaporate into a warm finish, lasting on scents of glazed chestnuts. A simple and delicious Tawny."Wine & Spirits 90 points

"The 20 Years Old Tawny Port (Maynard's) comes in at 109 grams per liter of residual sugar. A nice step up on the 10 Year Old Maynard's, also reviewed, this adds some weight, but more importantly, concentration of flavor--those old, classic Tawny nuances. Very pleasing, yet easy to drink, this is a charming 20 that should be available at a nice price."Wine Advocate 90 points

Dow's 10 Year Tawny Port Product #7247 (In Stock)
Dow's 10 Year Tawny Port Dow's 10 Year Tawny Port

Dow’s winemakers pick lots every vintage to go into the Tawny Port program.  The finished Port goes into large barrels and ages slowly, gradually acquiring a nutty, caramel, character and gaining an orangey/tawny color.  Dow’s 10-Year Tawny is made from a blend of these ports that are average approximately 10 years of age - although the “10-Year” designation indicates style more than actual wine age.  Dow’s 10-Year Tawny is a classic - orange peel, caramel, honey, nuts, and dried fig flavors swirl around a hint of red berry fruit.  Once again, the classic Dow dry finish keeps the wine refreshing.

Anton Bauer Gruner Veltliner Eiswein 2013 375ml Product #31238 (In Stock)
Anton Bauer Gruner Veltliner Eiswein 2013 375ml Anton Bauer Gruner Veltliner Eiswein 2013 375ml

One bitterly cold morning in January 2014, Anton Bauer and his team got up before dawn and harvested the last Grüner Veltliner berries of the 2013 growing season.  The frozen berries were rushed to the winery and immediately pressed, releasing tiny amounts of super-sugar-laden juicy and leaving the still solid water behind.  The thick, viscous, juice went into tank where it slowly fermented until the yeast could do no more, bringing the wine to 12.5% alcohol and leaving a stunning amount of rich sweetness and bracing acidity behind.

Despite the 2014 harvest date, this is technically a 2013 vintage wine.  But whatever you call it, the wine is brilliant.  Rich and creamy with layers of apricot, peach and white fruit aromas and flavors, there's a touch of honey and caramel for depth and bracing, tangy, acidity for freshness.  Sits on your palate for minutes after each sip, this is a rare treat you won't want to miss.

Musella Recioto 2011 (375ml) Product #32081 (In Stock)
Musella Recioto 2011 (375ml) Musella Recioto 2011 (375ml)

Recioto is Amarone left sweet - in this case, gloriously, richly, deeply, sweet but remarkably fragrant and fresh, too.  Musella only makes Recioto in great vintages, using the very best grapes of the harvest dried on straw mats for 150 days.  The aromas and flavors here call to mind dried cranberry, raspberry and raisin with a bunch of wild herb (thyme? Rosemary?) and then sweet black cherry and raspberry on the finish. A burst of red berry acid cleans up the finish and pulls you back for more.  A blend of  Corvina 50% Corvinone 10%, Rondinella 10%, Croatina 15%, Oseleta 15%  fermented in open top oak fermenters and then aged 2 years in neutral barrel.

Disznoko Tokaji Aszu 5 Puttonyos 2007 (500ml) Product #28360 (In Stock)
Disznoko Tokaji Aszu 5 Puttonyos 2007 (500ml) Disznoko Tokaji Aszu 5 Puttonyos 2007 (500ml)

A classic Tokaji; medium-sweet.

The 2007 Tokaji Aszu 5-Puttonyos is a blend of 75% Furmint, 15% Zeta and 10% Harslevelu (the first and last forming the base wine.) The berries were added to both the fermenting must but mostly finished wine, depending on the level of botrytis, then aged in barrel for 30 months. It has a very pure and clean nose, perhaps one of the most Sauternes-like I have come across, with yellow plum and quince aromas. The palate is clean and fresh on the entry with effervescent Satsuma, apricot and quince notes pricked with just the right amount of acidity (7.2 grams per liter, in case you were wondering.) This very feminine, balletic Tokaji – a little ingenue – is a perfect introduction to the delights of aszu wine. Drink now-2035+. Wine Advocate 91 points
