Bodegas Borsao Garnacha Tinto 2015 Product #31194 (In Stock)
Bodegas Borsao Garnacha Tinto 2015 Bodegas Borsao Garnacha Tinto 2015

Robert Parker called the 2011 edition of this perennial favorite value red, “Possibly the single greatest dry red wine value in the world.”  The 2015 edition is even better, clearly the best release of this all-time value champion we’ve tasted to date.  As always, it’s a blend of 85% Garnacha and 15% Tempranillo, all grown on the dusty, barren, soils of Spain’s Campo de Borja region.  Naturally grown, hand harvested, and fermented and aged all in tank, it’s a perfect blend of rich, ripe, fruit and stylish, refreshing, structure.

"Made entirely in stainless steel tanks. Deep ruby. Aromas of ripe red berries, candied licorice and pungent flowers develop a spicy nuance in the glass. Appealingly sweet cherry, raspberry and floral pastille flavors deepen and expand steadily with aeration. Closes smooth and broad, with repeating spiciness, subtle tannins and very good, fruity tenacity.  Drink 2017 - 2021."  Vinous (Raynolds) 90 points

Il Bastardo Sangiovese Toscana 2016 Product #32638 (In Stock)
Il Bastardo Sangiovese Toscana 2016 Il Bastardo Sangiovese Toscana 2016

In Wood Case While It Lasts!  A fun, flavorful, and fine value Tuscan Sangiovese made by winemaker Paolo Masi at Tuscany’s Renzo Masi winery from grapes grown near Florence and Chianti Ruffina.  The Masi family’s Fattoria di Basciano has been hailed by Wine Advocate as “one of the rising stars of Rufina,” and their Renzo Masi project was designed to use friends’ and neighbors’ grapes to make “wines with vibrant territorial personality."  This special project by the Masi’s for importer Bob Shack does that in spades and at a fantastic value price to boot!

Ripe aromas and flavors of cherry and red berry start off bright and fresh and then get darker with a little air. The juicy acidity and light tannins make this easy to just sip, but give it enough substance to enjoy with pizza, burgers, or a big bowl of pasta and red sauce.  There's enough going on here to hold your interest through a few glasses and - especially at this price - tempt you to open a second bottle as the night goes on.  Fun stuff and fantastic value.

Castelmaure Corbieres Col Des Vents 2015 Product #31694 (In Stock)
Castelmaure Corbieres Col Des Vents 2015 Castelmaure Corbieres Col Des Vents 2015

There’s nothing not to like and everything to love about this robust blend of 50% Carignan, 35% Grenache, and 15% Syrah from the barren hills of Laguedoc’s Corbieres region.  Generous aromas of crushed blackberry, black plum, cracked pepper, cocoa, warm stones and more jump from the glass.  Take a sip and you’ll love how the briary blackberry, blueberry and raspberry fruit coat your mouth and the accents of chocolate, stone, herb and pepper give extra complexity.  While the flavors are big and the texture rich, there’s a welcome dose of juicy acidity and fine-grained tannins that make this refreshing drunk solo and flexible at table, too.

"What could be a hidden gem in the vintage, the 2015 Corbières Col des Vents is 50% Carignan, 30% Grenache and 20% Syrah that’s aging all in tank. A big, sexy, fruit-loaded effort, it offers a liquid blackberry like style of fruit as well as crushed herbs, pepper and a hint of earth. It should drink nicely right out of the gate."Wine Advocate 87-89 points

Montebuena Rioja Cuvee KPF 2015 Product #32442 (In Stock)
Montebuena Rioja Cuvee KPF 2015 Montebuena Rioja Cuvee KPF 2015

The big 90 point rating from Vinous is the kind of praise you expect to find for a $15-$20 Rioja, which makes the everyday $11.99 price a pleasing surprise (and this week’s super $6.98 two-case deal a stunner).  But that’s the kind of value that Wine Enthusiast Importer and Master Sommelier Fran Kysela delivers on a daily basis.  Here, Fran works with Rioja’s Unión de Cosecheros of Labastida to select his own favorite batches – Cuvee KPF – just for the US market.  Unlike some other importers, Fran isn’t trying to create a super-charged, over-ripe, parody of Spanish wine built just to pick up critical points.  Instead, he’s delivered us a very fine, classically-styled, Rioja of nice restraint now and plenty of short-term cellar potential.  As IWC said of a previous release, “it's an excellent value for Rioja.”  Especially at these remarkable savings prices!

“Aged for three months in used American oak barrels. Vivid ruby. Bright, sharply focused aromas of fresh red fruits and flowers, along with a spicy overtone and a hint of vanilla. Lithe and appealingly sweet on the palate, offering vibrant, oak-spiced raspberry and cherry flavors and a subtle rose pastille nuance. Finishes supple and long, displaying silky, slow-building tannins and resonating spiciness.”  Vinous (Raynolds) 90 points

Monte Degli Angeli Pinot Noir Monferrato 2016 Product #32690 (In Stock)
Monte Degli Angeli Pinot Noir Monferrato 2016 Monte Degli Angeli Pinot Noir Monferrato 2016

You've got to be willing to think a bit outside the box to find real, honest, Pinot Noir selling for less than $10 these days.  Here we head to Italy's Piemonte region - more famous for Barolo and Barbaresco - to a small family-owned estate run by Brothers Antonio and Paolo Sperone.  The climate here is closer to Burgundy than you'd expect, and it lets the Sperones harvest ripe, juicy, Pinot Noir fruit and then give it 6 months in barrel to soften and gain complexity.  Black cherry and strawberry fruit hold center stage here with accents of smoke and fresh earth.  Juicy in the middle and supported by light, fine, tannin, this is a steal in value Pinot Noir that tastes like...well, Pinot Noir!

Rubus Cabernet Sauvignon California 2015 Product #31862 (In Stock)
Rubus Cabernet Sauvignon California 2015 Rubus Cabernet Sauvignon California 2015

If you're looking for subtle, elegant, sophisticated California Cabernet...then look elsewhere.  Because this is rowdy, pumped up, boldly fruited, vanilla and chocolate-laced Cab with French oak spice and a finish as plump as a feather pillow.  Importer and Master Sommelier Fran Kysela created the Rubus label so he could find under-appreciated fruit in great growing regions and turn it into crowd-pleasing wines a wallet-delighting prices.  This is the best we've tasted in the series, with good heft (at just 13.5% abv) and oodles of chocolate-covered cherry fruit and sweet oak spice.  Soft enough to sip at a casual cookout, bold enough to enjoy with burgers, steaks or lamb, and affordable enough to share with a crowd.

Kind of an old-school South-of-France red here with a bit of modern polish.  The blend is old-timey with 40% Grenache, 40% Caladoc, 10% Syrah and 10% Marselan all done in tank.  You'll certainly taste the warm, sunshiny, climate here in ripe plum and black raspberry fruit and there's a nice dose of black olive, thyme and lavender, too.  But the flavors stay as fresh as a daisy right on through the dusty, lightly chewy, finish.  Great all-purpose bistro red at a fine, weeknight, price.

Bliss Family Blissful Red Blend 2014 Product #32003 (In Stock)
Bliss Family Blissful Red Blend 2014 Bliss Family Blissful Red Blend 2014

While “Blissful Red” is play on this winegrowing family’s name, it’s also a pretty good description of how you’ll feel about this old fashioned “mixed blacks” blend at a very “old school” California price!  Irv Bliss fell in love with California’s Central Coast during a visit in the 1930s and then – a few years later – purchased this 450 acre Medocino estate at auction sight unseen.  Today his grandchildren continue to farm grapes here, selling some of their crop and – just like Irv – making a bit of wine for family, friends – and you!

Back in 1930s California, the notion of planting a vineyard to a single grape varietal was just getting started, so Irv followed in local tradition and planted his field to a mixture of grapes that had historically done well in the region.  This wine is an homage to Irv, blending Primitivo, Zinfandel, Sangiovese, Merlot, Barbera, Cab and Syrah to create a delicious “kitchen sink” red blend.  It's nice and dark and full of ripe, spicy, fruit - think briary raspberry, blackberry and cherry - with a hint of herb and Italian structure.  A great gush of cherry fruit, earth, smoke and spice pops on the juicy finish.  At just 13.5% alcohol (and a great sale price), it’s definitely the kind of wine you can enjoy all day long with pasta, pizza, burgers, sausages, and lots and lots of friends!

Falesco Vitiano Rosso Umbria 2014 Product #32395 (In Stock)
Falesco Vitiano Rosso Umbria 2014 Falesco Vitiano Rosso Umbria 2014

An Italian blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Sangiovese that would be a $20 "super-Tuscan" - if only it didn't come from neighboring Umbria!  This is rich and round with dark cherry and red currant fruit, moderate acidity and nicely chewy tannins.  Turns spicier and smoother with air, making this a great choice for everything from cookouts to spaghetti dinners to cool weather parties.

"A soft and velvety texture red with orange peel, chocolate and plum aromas and flavors. Medium to full body, fresh acidity and a flavorful finish. Subtle at the same time. This is always one of Italy's excellent value reds."  James Suckling 91 points

Proof that you can find a great (and great value) bottle of Cabernet Sauvignon outside of Bordeaux or Napa!  This is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon from France's Languedoc region, harvested ripe in the outstanding 2016 vintage, aged in tank, and bottled up fresh for you.  Hearty and deep, this showcases classic Cab notes of blackcurrant, blackberry, and dark chocolate with an elevating dash of herb and spice.  The dark fruit flows on through the finish where a note of hot stone smokiness emerges and melds with the spice and herb.  Rich and smooth enough to just sip and a great companion at table, too.

Casa Santos Lima Confidencial Reserva 2014 Product #32573 (In Stock)
Casa Santos Lima Confidencial Reserva 2014 Casa Santos Lima Confidencial Reserva 2014

A staggering value!  Dark black raspberry, plum, purple flowers, cocoa powder and dusty mineral scents are just some of the aromas showing on the complex nose.  As in past releases, there's plenty of dark raspberry and blackberry fruit on the palate with dashes of licorice root, wild strawberry and mineral flavors in the mouth.  But the texture here is the best ever, poised and sleek at first before gaining amplitude and depth with air.  By all means enjoy it right now for the forward fruit and sophisticated mouth feel.  But stash some away for a few years and you'll be rewarded with even more intense flavors and breadth.

"One of the top wines from this producer, this blend of at least 10 grape varieties comes from its estate. The wood aging has added sophistication to this already concentrated wine. With black fruits to the fore and firm tannins, it will age well."Wine Enthusiast 92 points

Ch Haut Queray Bordeaux Superieur 2016 Product #32556 (In Stock)
Ch Haut Queray Bordeaux Superieur 2016 Ch Haut Queray Bordeaux Superieur 2016

Even as 2015 Bordeaux begin to arrive in the USA, excitement is building for vintage 2016.  A wet winter, followed by a dry summer with just enough rain to keep the vines working, delivered wines of pristine ripeness with sweet, supple, tannins, loads of fruit, and unbelievable supple tannins.  As Wine Advocate said in their 2016 barrel tasting summary, “You will love these wines.”

As always, the best thing about a great Bordeaux vintage is how the “little guys” were able to make compelling wines that sell for a song.  Here, three women – Madam Martine Borderie with her daughter and daughter-in-law – have crafted a magnificent, pure, Bordeaux from this 200 year-old Right Bank estate just outside Lussac Saint-Emilion.  It’s 100% Merlot and made without one stick of wood.  But the aromas, flavors, and texture all scream “classic Bordeaux.”  Aromas and flavors of black and redcurrant, sweet spice, and subtle tobacco-like herb jump from the glass and coat your palate in a wine that’s silky through the middle and appetizingly dry on the long, spicy, finish.  Drink it this year with holiday lamb or beef dishes and leave a few bottles in the stylish wood case to develop even more complexity through 2021.

Castello La Leccia Vivaio del Cavaliere Toscana Rosso 2015 Product #32021 (In Stock)
Castello La Leccia Vivaio del Cavaliere Toscana Rosso 2015 Castello La Leccia Vivaio del Cavaliere Toscana Rosso 2015

An estate dating from 1077 is going to have deep roots, but it's especially exciting when a strong sense of tradition gets paired with a touch of modern innovation. Owner/winegrower  Francesco Daddi has gone "back to the future" a bit by converting this prime estate near Castellina in Chianti to 100% organic farming and returning to the practice of blending Malvasia Nera with his Chianti Sangiovese.

Here he innovates by selecting small lots of what could be Chianti Classico, giving them a lighter extraction and then bottling 85% Sangiovese and 15% Malvasia with zero time in oak.  The result is a festive, fun, wine that's bursting with juicy black cherry, a hint of licorice root, and lots of floral complexity.  The structure is friendly - fresh and lightly tannic - inviting summer sipping with a light chill or warming it up and airing it out so more dark, spicy, fruit emerges to pair with pizza, pasta or richer foods.  Delicious stuff.

Bodegas Carrau Tannat De Reserva 2015 Product #32078 (In Stock)
Bodegas Carrau Tannat De Reserva 2015 Bodegas Carrau Tannat De Reserva 2015

No one really knows why an obscure and - as the name suggests - often hard-edged grape from France's Southwest found it's perfect home in Uruguay.  But one taste of this perfect for picnicking  100% Tannat, should convince you that the grape can have some friendly style, too.  Ripe Tannat grapes grown on Urugay's coastal vineyards - where the climate and soils are pretty much identical to Bordeaux - gets a gentle fermentation and then 2 full years in neutral oak barrel to soften up and emerge ready to gulp.  Aromas and flavors feature fresh red berry and cherry fruit with a pretty dash of spice and very fine-grained tannins.  The fruit-filled, supple, finish and fresh mid-palate make this a great all around summer red with a chill and very enjoyable with richer foods, too.  If you enjoy Malbec from cooler slices of Argentina or juicy American red blends, then this is going to be a treat!

Bonny Doon Grenache Clos de Gilroy 2013 Product #32443 (In Stock)
Bonny Doon Grenache Clos de Gilroy 2013 Bonny Doon Grenache Clos de Gilroy 2013

Technically, this is "The Wine Formerly Known as Clos de Gilroy" as the fruit is now from just outside California's garlic capital. "Clos, but no Cigare" as Randall Graham says - a bit of wordplay for long-time fans of California's somewhat loony, iconoclastic, and very dedicated Rhone Ranger pioneer.  Regardless, this is another in a long line of zesty, easy to love, quaffers made in a classic Cotes du Rhone style.  Mostly Grenache with a touch of Mourvedre, it's loaded with crushed strawberry and raspberry fruit supported by a dose of loamy earth, a dash of cracked black pepper, and plenty of garrigue.  Don't overthink this one.  Just crack it open, pour a big slug, and get on with whatever you were planning to cook or do.  The wine won't get in the way but it will add a nice burst of delicious fun to the proceedings!
