Bodegas Borsao Garnacha Tinto 2016 Product #32789 (In Stock)
Bodegas Borsao Garnacha Tinto 2016 Bodegas Borsao Garnacha Tinto 2016

Robert Parker called the 2011 edition of this perennial favorite value red, “Possibly the single greatest dry red wine value in the world.”  The 2016 is as fine and fresh as ever.  This year it blends ripe Garnacha and a splash of Syrah, both grown on the dusty, barren, soils of Spain’s Campo de Borja region.  Naturally grown, hand harvested, and fermented and aged all in tank, it’s a perfect blend of rich, ripe, fruit and stylish, refreshing, structure.

"The flagship 2016 Borsao Garnacha is mostly Garnacha complemented with Syrah. This is also fermented in stainless steel with neutral yeasts and bottled unoaked. The Syrah might give it a little touch and some oomph in the nose, somehow spicy and a touch smoky from the skins of the variety. The palate is fleshy and juicy, very tasty, with unnoticeable tannins. It goes down easily with a velvety sensation. Superb value."Wine Advocate 89 points

Santa Julia Malbec Plus 2017 Product #33132 (In Stock)
Santa Julia Malbec Plus 2017 Santa Julia Malbec Plus 2017

Here's an absolutely SCREAMING house/party red wine deal in the form of ripe and fruit-filled Mendoza Malbec.  José Zuccardi, director of Mendoza's top-notch Familia Zuccardi estate, created this estate in 1994 and named it in honor of his only daughter, Julia.  From the beginning, it's been a leading force in organic and sustainable grape growing for Mendoza, and a portion of each year's profits are invested locally to support sustainability and community initiatives.

Which is all just a bonus - a "Plus" if you will - to just how good this tastes.  It's 100% Mendoza Malbec fermented cool and with 30% aged in used French oak barriques.  At 13.5% alcohol, it's got a nicely plump feel without going overboard to heavy. There's a generous serving of ripe red currant and cherry fruit on the nose and palate with pretty spice shadings and a fine-grained, smooth, finish.  An easy-drinking value with great mouthfeel and a clean, easy, finish you can take home for a song.  Which is a big "Plus" indeed!

Some of the best wine values in the world come from hidden nooks and crannies of Spain - like this one!  From an old growing region in Aragon, this is a blend of very old vine Garnacha and Syrah done all in tank.  There's fantastic freshness here - especially for Carinena! - with blackberry and black raspberry fruit at the core and a nice, almost blood orange, note on the back. Casa Santos Lima Confidencial Reserva 2014 Product #32573 (In Stock)
Casa Santos Lima Confidencial Reserva 2014 Casa Santos Lima Confidencial Reserva 2014

A staggering value!  Dark black raspberry, plum, purple flowers, cocoa powder and dusty mineral scents are just some of the aromas showing on the complex nose.  As in past releases, there's plenty of dark raspberry and blackberry fruit on the palate with dashes of licorice root, wild strawberry and mineral flavors in the mouth.  But the texture here is the best ever, poised and sleek at first before gaining amplitude and depth with air.  By all means enjoy it right now for the forward fruit and sophisticated mouth feel.  But stash some away for a few years and you'll be rewarded with even more intense flavors and breadth.

"One of the top wines from this producer, this blend of at least 10 grape varieties comes from its estate. The wood aging has added sophistication to this already concentrated wine. With black fruits to the fore and firm tannins, it will age well."Wine Enthusiast 92 points

Tres Ojos Old Vines Garnacha Calatayud 2013 Product #32816 (In Stock)
Tres Ojos Old Vines Garnacha Calatayud 2013 Tres Ojos Old Vines Garnacha Calatayud 2013

Here's an outstanding value from little-known Calatayud in Spain that will do just as well on the bar for a party as it will with roasted meats or robust sausage.  It's based on 85% Garnacha from 40-50 year old bush-trained vines that have to dig deep into their non-irrigated soils for water and nutrients.  About 7% each of Cabernet Sauvignon and Tempranillo add structure and some black fruit notes and a dash of Syrah give meaty spice.

The 2012 edition was one of our best-selling red value favorites, and the new vintage cranks up the intensity and depth even more.  The aromas are robust and fresh, with generous dollops of raspberry, violet and spice (just from the grapes - no oak used at all!).  The flavors follow with more raspberry and sweet cherry fruit, hints of dark chocolate and more spice.  With air, the fruit gets darker and richer, but a touch of citrusy acid and light, crisp, tannins keeps things fresh even as complex flavors of balsamic and baked strawberry linger.  Supple enough for a party, structured enough for most anything you’ll pull off the grill, and a steal of a deal, too!

There’s nothing not to like and everything to love about this robust blend of 50% Carignan, 35% Grenache, and 15% Syrah from the barren hills of Languedoc’s Corbieres region.  Generous aromas of crushed blackberry, black plum, cracked pepper, cocoa, warm stones and more jump from the glass.  Take a sip and you’ll love how the briary blackberry, blueberry and raspberry fruit coat your mouth and the accents of chocolate, stone, herb and pepper give extra complexity.  While the flavors are big and the texture rich, there’s a welcome dose of juicy acidity and fine-grained tannins that make this refreshing drunk solo and flexible at table, too.

La Tremenda Monastrell Alicante 2014 Product #32629 (In Stock)
La Tremenda Monastrell Alicante 2014 La Tremenda Monastrell Alicante 2014

We love bringing you bottles like this – wines that are both deliciously authentic expressions of a grape and place AND carrying the reassuring praise of the international wine press.  The grape here is Monastrell, better known to many as France’s Mourvedre in its starring role in Bandol and Ch Beaucastel’s Chateauneuf du Pape.  On the high plains of Spain’s Alicante region and under the care of the committed traditionalists at Enrique Mendoza, this marries rich ripeness of fruit with earthy, herbal, complexity and a finish that’s long, firm, but still very easy to enjoy.  Sure, it’s built to pair with rich stews and savory roasted and grilled meats.  But the ripe fruit and silky finish will give plenty of pleasure before the food ever hits the table.

"This wine has six months in used 500-liter barrels and a variable time in vat, between six months and one year. The 2014 feels very tender, it has the esparto grass austerity of the stony vineyards with the chalky soils and a myriad of Mediterranean herbs. They used some stems for the fermentation, which added a fine thread and makes it subtly textured. It has the dusty tannins and the saline tastiness of the limestone soils. It represents a superb value and a great introduction to the Monastrell from Alicante; the price is hard to believe."Wine Advocate 92 points

Monte Degli Angeli Pinot Noir Monferrato 2016 Product #32690 (In Stock)
Monte Degli Angeli Pinot Noir Monferrato 2016 Monte Degli Angeli Pinot Noir Monferrato 2016

You've got to be willing to think a bit outside the box to find real, honest, Pinot Noir selling for less than $10 these days.  Here we head to Italy's Piemonte region - more famous for Barolo and Barbaresco - to a small family-owned estate run by Brothers Antonio and Paolo Sperone.  The climate here is closer to Burgundy than you'd expect, and it lets the Sperones harvest ripe, juicy, Pinot Noir fruit and then give it 6 months in barrel to soften and gain complexity.  Black cherry and strawberry fruit hold center stage here with accents of smoke and fresh earth.  Juicy in the middle and supported by light, fine, tannin, this is a steal in value Pinot Noir that tastes like...well, Pinot Noir!

Bruni Poggio D' Elsa Cabernet Sangiovese 2016 Product #32137 (In Stock)
Bruni Poggio D' Elsa Cabernet Sangiovese 2016 Bruni Poggio D' Elsa Cabernet Sangiovese 2016

Winemaker Marco Bruni and his siblings named this “Super Tuscan” red for their mom, Elsa – could it be anything other than fantastic?  From Tuscany’s Maremma region, a slice of western Tuscany that gets all of the brilliant “Tuscan sun” that makes Chianti so famous plus cooling breezes from the nearby sea.  It’s sometimes called the “California of Italy” because while Sangiovese (the main grape of Chianti and Brunello) is great here, so is Napa Valley’s Cabernet Sauvignon.  Here, the Bruni’s blend equal parts Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon and age about 30% of the wine in French oak casks.

A sizzling value in super-Tuscan red blends of 50% Sangiovese - for Italian zest and red fruit - and 50% Cabernet Sauvignon - for richness and dark currant fruit - raised 70% in tank and 30% in large oak cask for spice.  It's loaded with black cherry, plum, and black currant fruit aromas and flavors with a hint of cedar and tobacco for complexity.  Juicy like Chianti, rich Cabernet Sauvignon.  Yum!

Collemattoni Toscana Adone Rosso 2015 Product #32952 (In Stock)
Collemattoni Toscana Adone Rosso 2015 Collemattoni Toscana Adone Rosso 2015

We loved Collemattoni's 96 point Brunello di Montalcino 2012, but - truth be told - we probably liked this vibrant Toscana Rosso even more!  It's a blend of 95% Sangiovese from in and around the Brunello zone plus 5% Merlot for extra plumpness and depth.  Pretty aromas of violets, cherry and blackberry lead to a rich and zesty palate with good breadth and richness and a fine, food-friendly, finish.  A fine pizza/pasta red with the extra heft to handle a good steak, too.

Dom Foretal Beaujolais Villages 2015 Product #32964 (In Stock)
Dom Foretal Beaujolais Villages 2015 Dom Foretal Beaujolais Villages 2015

Jean-Yves Perraud farms just 20 acres of Gamay in Moulin-a-Vent and Villages-level vineyards between Fleurie and Chenas. In 2015, he turned out a winning, ripe, gulpable Beaujolais Villages that you'll love drinking for refreshment and pairing with roast chicken or any simple meal.  There's the concentration and ripeness you'd expect from 40 year-old vines and the generous 2015 harvest, with loads of dark red cherry and ripe strawberry fruit.  A blast of floral perfume and stony minerality adds interest and a just right pop of cherry acids keeps things fresh and fun.

Wine Advocate's score (87 points) misses the mark a bit, but the words are spot on: "The 2015 Beaujolais Villages needs a leash on the nose to hold back all those exuberant kirsch and dark cherry fruit bursting from the glass. But that is what you want from this vintage. The palate is succulent and ripe with dark cherries and strawberry, sweet to the core and though missing a little definition on the finish, you'd have consumed the entire bottle before you start vexing about that. Glug 'n enjoy."  Exactly!

Ch Moulinat Bordeaux 2015 Product #33165 (In Stock)
Ch Moulinat Bordeaux 2015 Ch Moulinat Bordeaux 2015

Chateau Moulinat is located on limestone, gravel and sandy soils in Bordeaux's Entre Deux Mers region, between the rivers Garonne and Dordogne.  It's 58% Merlot (for plump richness), 36% Cabernet Sauvignon (for structure and finesse) and 6% Cabernet Franc (for herby perfume). This all-tank red is utterly delicious right now (even though you can hold it for 3-5 years if you'd like).  It's remarkably plump, plush and rich and loaded with blackcurrant and dark cherry fruit.  The Cab Franc delivers pretty accents of dried herb and tobacco on the nose and palate while the Cab Sauv provides a nice, focused, touch of structure.

We're not the only ones who like 2015 Ch Moulinat.  The Washington Post's wine critic, Dave McIntyre, tweeted, "Textbook Bordeaux, with all the right flavors of graphite (pencil), black currant etc etc, but without the stress of a high price tag and the need to cellar it for years. What’s not to like about this wine? $14, and a terrific value."  His "official" review was just as enthusiastic:

"Textbook Bordeaux, offering the traditional “pencil” graphite aromas over scents of plum, cherry and blackcurrant. And the wine kept getting better over a few days, suggesting it will last for several years in your cellar. Sustainably farmed."  Washington Post ***/*** (Exceptional)

The Recorba Ribera del Duero Tinto is an example of what happens when you get Tempranillo all the way ripe and then let it show it’s colors without any wood at all.  Big aromas and flavors of red plum, black cherry and raspberry take center stage with accents of natural spice, warm stones, and a touch of exotic sandalwood.  A huge “bang for the buck” Tempranillo to enjoy by itself or with pretty much anything you’d put on the grill.
