Anton Bauer Gruner Veltliner Gmork 2016 Product #32170 (In Stock)
Anton Bauer Gruner Veltliner Gmork 2016 Anton Bauer Gruner Veltliner Gmork 2016

Flat out the best vintage of this stunning value single-vineyard Grüner we’ve ever tasted here.  There’s a refreshing salty brininess to the aromas here, along with fresh pear and Meyer lemon. On the palate there’s a pleasing weightiness from that extra notch of ripeness vintage 2016 brought that you wouldn’t expect from all those brisk, fresh aromas. That pear aroma takes on a lovely ripeness, and there’s a delicious ripe apple flavor as well, like biting into a fresh Honeycrisp apple. A refreshing, versatile white.

“A touch of flinty reduction colors the nose, showing how young this wine still is. The palate, however, is fresh and sprightly in shape, but totally rich and concentrated in flavor. Svelte generosity shows in the very fluid midpalate texture and a lasting lemon finish.” Wine Enthusiast 91 points

The kind of soft, supple, and oh-so-easy-to-drink red you'll want to have at hand all summer long!  A blend of 50% Merlot plus equal parts Pinot Noir and St. Laurent, this is bursting with aromas of dark cherry, black raspberry, and a dusty chocolate note.  In the mouth, the fruit gets a little tangier with boysenberry and cherry notes plus more bitter chocolate and just the right touch of oak spice.  Great energy and focus from start to finish with tangy blueberry and chocolate notes lingering.  Fun to just sip and a great match for grilled sausage, roast chicken, or burgers.

Steindorfer Apetlon Rouge Burgenland 2015 Product #32732 (In Stock)
Steindorfer Apetlon Rouge Burgenland 2015 Steindorfer Apetlon Rouge Burgenland 2015

The 2013 edition was our most popular Austrian red wine ever – and the 2015 is clearly better! The father/son team of Ernst and Roland Steindorfer craft this wine from their nicely ripe Burgenland plots of Blaufränkisch (40%), St. Laurent and Zweigelt (30% each).  Aging for 17 months in 2nd and 3rd use French oak barriques pulls the wine together nicely.  The flavors are a bit richer and deeper this year, with roasted strawberry and blackberry puree fruit complemented by complex shadings of exotic spice, dark chocolate, and earth.  The sweet, tangy, fruit pumps out through a finish supported by fine tannins and leaving notes of chocolate, spice, and fruit lingering behind.  It’s juicy and fruit-filled enough to enjoy solo and has the rich earth, chocolate and crisp tannins to match roasted meats and more.

"The nose brims with fruit. Fleshy, almost overripe red cherry sets the tone on the nose that carries through to the palate. The body is juicy but has some grip while the cherry fruit attains crunch, a touch of white pepper spice and more freshness than the nose would suggest. The finish is vivid and moreish.”Wine Enthusiast 91 points

Heinrich Hartl III Rotgipfler 2015 Product #33022 (In Stock)

New grape time!  Rotgipfler is a unique Austrian grape with red shoots (the "Rot") and found only in the southerly Thermenregion area.  A bit exotic, for sure, but delicious.

"A touch of honeysuckle works its way through the peachy, lemony nose of this indigenous Austrian. The palate brings out peach and a perfumed, rose-scented phenolic edge. Although the texture is rounded, the palate is fresh and firm. Ripeness and exuberance are coralled into lively and very appetizing freshness."Wine Enthusiast 92 points

Heinrich Hartl III Pinot Noir Classic 2015 Product #33056 (In Stock)

"A promising touch of reduction still plays on the nose, riding above ripe notions of redcurrant and red cherry. The palate is ripe, mellow and smooth, showing rounded berry notes and a gentle structure supported by spicy freshness. Oak is beautifully integrated and nothing is overdone. The ripeness of the vintage is evident, but it is on the finish that this shows its true colors: a good structure and lasting freshness."Wine Enthusiast 92 points

Steininger Gruner Veltliner Grand Gru 2016 Product #32694 (In Stock)
Steininger Gruner Veltliner Grand Gru 2016 Steininger Gruner Veltliner Grand Gru 2016

The name is a fun play on words – evoking both the French concept of “Grand Cru” quality and the Steininger’s belief that this is a “Grand” Grüner Veltliner!  Fruit for this wine comes from the Steininger’s best vineyard and is harvested in very late September or October.  The ripe fruit ferments in stainless steel and then goes into large acacia wood casks for malolactic fermentation and aging.

We often feature the rich, creamy, Grand Grü for Thanksgiving, and (as many of you know), the 2016 handled that cacophony of flavors with ease.  But in the great 2016 vintage, Carl and Brigita Steininger’s top white soars to new heights, matching the base notes of ripe pear fruit with top notes of citrusy and green apple acidity.  The combination of richness and freshness makes this the perfect white to bridge the chill of winter and sunny warmth of spring – or to enjoy anytime at all.

"This wine's subdued nose just hints at pear and yeast. The palate combines fresh, pure green pear fruit with a slightly textured, sonorous hint of sage and soy-scented yeast. The overall tone is one of wonderfully rich pear fruit."Wine Enthusiast 92 points

Steininger Gruner Veltliner Sekt 2015 Product #33158 (In Stock)
Steininger Gruner Veltliner Sekt 2015 Steininger Gruner Veltliner Sekt 2015

So, what happens when you take a great still wine – in this case, the 2015 Grüner Veltliner Kamptal– and give it a little fizz?  Pure joy ensues!

Steininger is Kamptal’s top producer of sparkling wines and one of the very best in all of Austria.  The family specializes in single varietal, single vintage, fizz that showcases the character of the grape and growing season.  The 2015 Grüner Veltliner Sekt is a beauty, at once creamy and full of classic Grüner fruit and terrifically dry and vibrant.  The in-bottle secondary fermentation delivers plenty of fizz, but this still reads “Grüner” with bright apple, green pea, and white pepper notes.  Easy to sip on its own and fun to pair with savory sausage or freshwater fish.

Heinrich Hartl Iii Pinot Noir Reserve 2014 Product #33231 (In Stock)

Lovely depth and earthy complexity here in a wine that will shine with earthy mushrooms, salmon and even lamb.

"This is brooding on the nose with the allure of an elderberry aroma. The same note dominates the palate which has a smooth, sensuous body, still held tight by brisk, fine tannin and lively acidity. There is almost stealthy, surprising grip. With its ample fruit this is already enticing, but structure and freshness promise more pleasure to come."Wine Enthusiast 92 points

Tegernseerhof Gruner Veltliner Hohereck Smaragd 2016 Product #33232 (In Stock)

From a small, steep, vineyard above the Danube. Brilliant.

"From a small and steep vineyard located between the Kellerberg and the Loibenberg, the 2016 Ried Höhereck Grüner Veltliner Smaragd offers a clear and aromatic nose of ripe, concentrated fruits, lime zest, green paprika and discreet lactic aromas. On the palate this is creamy, elegant and well balanced with a lot of power and some (alcoholic) bitterness on the finish. From poor, sandy gneiss soils, the Höhereck reveals good freshness and crystalline grip."Wine Advocate 90 points

"This wine's ripe, yellow pear aromas have a savory touch of miso. On the palate, a pleasantly bitter note of citrus pith takes over, adding freshness and texture to complement the savory flavors that give it so much intrigue. It would be simply impossible to not take another sip. The finish is clean, taut and moreish."Wine Enthusiast 94 points
