Casa Santos Lima Confidencial Reserva 2014 Product #32573 (In Stock)
Casa Santos Lima Confidencial Reserva 2014 Casa Santos Lima Confidencial Reserva 2014

A staggering value!  Dark black raspberry, plum, purple flowers, cocoa powder and dusty mineral scents are just some of the aromas showing on the complex nose.  As in past releases, there's plenty of dark raspberry and blackberry fruit on the palate with dashes of licorice root, wild strawberry and mineral flavors in the mouth.  But the texture here is the best ever, poised and sleek at first before gaining amplitude and depth with air.  By all means enjoy it right now for the forward fruit and sophisticated mouth feel.  But stash some away for a few years and you'll be rewarded with even more intense flavors and breadth.

"One of the top wines from this producer, this blend of at least 10 grape varieties comes from its estate. The wood aging has added sophistication to this already concentrated wine. With black fruits to the fore and firm tannins, it will age well."Wine Enthusiast 92 points

Quinta Da Raza Alvarinho Trajadura Vinho Verde 2016 Product #33085 (In Stock)
Quinta Da Raza Alvarinho Trajadura Vinho Verde 2016 Quinta Da Raza Alvarinho Trajadura Vinho Verde 2016

If you think about Vinho Verde at all, you probably think of light-bodied, tart and tangy, whites with a prickle of gas to enjoy in mid-summer heat with cold shrimp or a salad.  But this blend of Portugal’s Vinho Verde region’s two best grapes – Alvarinho and Trajadura is a bit more and better than that.  In fact, in the nearly perfect 2016 growing season, it’s a wine that both exemplifies and transcends its home and style.  It’s a Vinho Verde for drinking all year ‘round.

Pour a glass and you’ll admire the clear, crisp, light yellow/green color (while “Vinho Verde” really means “young wine,” there’s definitely a touch of green tint here, too).  Give it a swirl and you’ll love the big, ripe, aromas of peach, apricot and orange blossom that really scream “Summer!” even on a cool, cloudy, day.  And then your first sip fills your mouth with zesty orange citrus fruit, mid-summer peach, and a hint of something floral lifted by a very light prickle of CO2.  The ripe, fresh, fruit flavors pick up a hint of just squeezed lime as salty, stony, selzer-like minerality comes up on the mouthwatering finish.  It’s delightfully delicious.

An outstanding in real Madeira for sipping or use in rich sauces or soups.  The light tawny color and heady aromas and flavors of toasted nuts, dark caramel, and burnt orange peel come from barrel aging and exposure to high heat for 3+ months - the process that "Madeirizes" the wine and creates its distinctive tang.  Lightly sweet to balance the zingy acids.

If you've enjoyed great value Portuguese reds like Confidencial, take a step up to this bold, intense, red and you'll be happier still. A blend of Aragonez (Tempranillo) and Port grapes Touriga Nacional and Trincadeira, this is a wine of plush, rich, deep texture.  Black and dark red fruits (berries, plums) make up the wine's core with spicy, chocolaty, oak adding depth and complexity.  The super-intense fruit, oak, and fine tannins make this a great steak wine, but you'll be happy sipping on it while the grill warms up, too!

Quinta De La Rosa Lote 601 Ruby Reserve NV (500ml) Product #32682 (In Stock)
Quinta De La Rosa Lote 601 Ruby Reserve NV (500ml) Quinta De La Rosa Lote 601 Ruby Reserve NV (500ml)

What happens with an old Port house decides that instead of making a harsh, alcoholic, sticky-sweet, Ruby Port to be drunk by people who've already drunk too much - why not make a really great wine?  That's what's happening here at an estate that uses grapes that really ought to be in 20 Year Tawny or Vintage Port to create simply the best Ruby we've ever tasted!

Using only A-rated, estate-owned, vineyards they create a Ruby that's complex, layered, nutty, and finishes dry and fresh.  There's superb complexity to the nutty raspberry and Bing cherry fruit with layer upon layer of nutty caramel, spice and a gloriously dry, lightly tannic, finish.  It's the kind of wine you come back to again and again and will be especially delicious cool. Keeps nicely for a week or so on the counter and for a month-plus in the fridge.  Do not miss this!

Quinta De La Rosa Tawny NV (500ml) Product #32683 (In Stock)
Quinta De La Rosa Tawny NV (500ml) Quinta De La Rosa Tawny NV (500ml)

Astonishing quality for the money here in a Tawny Port made from grapes most growers would use for Vintage wines.  Port vineyards are graded from F (barely acceptable) to A (best of the best), and most straight Tawny Port comes from C, D and F-rated sites.  Quinta de la Rosa only owns A-rated vineyards and only makes wine from the grapes they grow.  Which is why this bold Tawny is so dark in color and richly delicious to taste.

It's a blend of wines aged three to four years in 500 liter Port "pipes" and blended each year for consistent style.  Dark tawny red in color, it pumps out intense aromas and flavors of dark fruit, rich honey, molasses and toasted nuts.  Rich and sweet in the middle, a bit of burnt orange peel comes up on the finish to provide balance and bite.  Lasts a week or so on the counter and several months in the fridge after opening.  What a treat!

Quinta Do Noval Late Bottled Vintage 2012 Product #32807 (In Stock)
Quinta Do Noval Late Bottled Vintage 2012 Quinta Do Noval Late Bottled Vintage 2012

Just another in a long line of delicious values from Quinta do Noval.

"The 2012 Unfiltered Late Bottled Vintage Port is another fine Noval LBV, traditionally styled and bottled in June 2017 with a long cork. Noval is one of the region's finest and most consistent producers of traditional LBVs, wines that become more expressive and can develop with age. This is a little on the lighter side—that's the vintage, perhaps—but still respectably concentrated. It has fine, expressive fruit and the elegant styling for which Noval is known. This should drink well on release and hold well for a couple of decades (yes, traditional LBVs age well and develop)."Wine Advocate 91 points

First, yes - this is a full 750ml bottle!  It's also a fascinating take on white Port.  Because the white wine aged in wood for 8 years, this drinks like a fantastically vibrant, youthful, tawney Port.  Full of dried apricot and raisin fruit and lightly caramelized walnut and almond flavors, it's lightly sweet and super long on the palate.  Delicous!

Maynard's Port Tawny 20 Year Product #30550 (In Stock)
Maynard's Port Tawny 20 Year Maynard's Port Tawny 20 Year

A great example of what is perhaps the most classic style of “wood aged” or “Tawny” Port.  Winemaker Alvaro van Zeller, formerly winemaker at Quinta do Noval, blends this from Port lots that have aged in barrel about 20 years on average.  Plenty of richness and depth here but also a lively note of burnt orange peel and even a touch of fresh red berry.  A delicious value!

"Maynard’s is a brand from Alvaro van Zeller of Barão de Vilar. This 20-year-old is lush in its sweetness, with candied orange peel scents and ripe strawberry flavors that evaporate into a warm finish, lasting on scents of glazed chestnuts. A simple and delicious Tawny."Wine & Spirits 90 points

"The 20 Years Old Tawny Port (Maynard's) comes in at 109 grams per liter of residual sugar. A nice step up on the 10 Year Old Maynard's, also reviewed, this adds some weight, but more importantly, concentration of flavor--those old, classic Tawny nuances. Very pleasing, yet easy to drink, this is a charming 20 that should be available at a nice price."Wine Advocate 90 points

Dow's 10 Year Tawny Port Product #7247 (In Stock)
Dow's 10 Year Tawny Port Dow's 10 Year Tawny Port

Dow’s winemakers pick lots every vintage to go into the Tawny Port program.  The finished Port goes into large barrels and ages slowly, gradually acquiring a nutty, caramel, character and gaining an orangey/tawny color.  Dow’s 10-Year Tawny is made from a blend of these ports that are average approximately 10 years of age - although the “10-Year” designation indicates style more than actual wine age.  Dow’s 10-Year Tawny is a classic - orange peel, caramel, honey, nuts, and dried fig flavors swirl around a hint of red berry fruit.  Once again, the classic Dow dry finish keeps the wine refreshing.

Quinta Dona Matilde Porto Colheita 2004 Product #27905 (In Stock)
Quinta Dona Matilde Porto Colheita 2004 Quinta Dona Matilde Porto Colheita 2004

The Barros family made their name in the Deuro during the 20th Century before selling the brand and focusing their energies on dry wines at Quinta Dona Matilde.  But, Filippe Barros and family aren’t quite ready to give up Port just yet, and they’ve tapped their broad range of contacts to create this brilliant 9 year-old beauty.

A lovely amber color with shimmering gold and rose highlights.  Big, lush, aromas of caramelized nuts, toffee, orange peel, and dried fruits lead to deep flavors of more toffee, toasted pecan, blood orange, dried redcurrant, and more.  Although it’s richly textured and weighty, a beam of brilliant acidity runs through the wine, giving freshness and a dry, very lightly tannic, finish.  This will thrill any fan of 10 year Tawny Port, matching that style’s freshness and fruit character and adding on more subtlety and complexity.

Taylor Fladgate Vintage Port 2009 375 Ml Product #24683 (In Stock)
Taylor Fladgate Vintage Port 2009 375 Ml Taylor Fladgate Vintage Port 2009 375 Ml

Usually my personal favorite of the line-up (although 2007 Fonseca is pretty impressive!), the 2009 Taylor Fladgate delivers the Bordeaux-like elegance and class it's known for. On the nose black fruit with notes of raspberry and plum and hints of graphite and cedar. The flavors stay black with currant and cherry appearing plus dark licorice root, apple skin, and more graphite. The deep flavors stay over top of the firm, grippy, mouth-coating tannins that keep everything focused and almost elegant (if such a big wine can be elegant). Love it.

"Going back and forth, the Taylor's 2009 has a lighter nose than the 2007 with precise dark cherry, Seville orange, fresh fig and a hint of scorched soil. The palate is full-bodied packed with ripe black cherries, fresh fig and white pepper; very harmonious and focused although I feel that the 2007 has a little more depth and persistency. Very pretty and very pure, this Taylor's may well put on weight with a couple of years in bottle and merit a higher mark."Wine Advocate 95 points

Barbeito Madeira Baltimore Rainwater Nv Product #29046 (In Stock)
Barbeito Madeira Baltimore Rainwater Nv Barbeito Madeira Baltimore Rainwater Nv

"The non-vintage RWC Baltimore Rainwater (bottled January 2012) was designed to reintroduce Rainwater as a prestige style rather than the cheaper, paler versions of years gone by. Its template was a Rainwater that Mannie Berk tasted from the 1820s. It has a light lanolin, melted candle wax, dried fig and orange blossom-scented bouquet that expands nicely with aeration. The palate is crisp and light on the entry, with a vibrant citric thread that combines succinctly with bitter orange and mandarin notes. It is laced with a touch of toffee towards the elegant finish. This is delicate, understated and delicious."Wine Advocate 89 points

Quinta Do Noval Vintage Port 2011 Product #27566 (In Stock)
Quinta Do Noval Vintage Port 2011 Quinta Do Noval Vintage Port 2011

Beautiful stuff to cellar, but hard to resist right now.

"Deep, saturated ruby. Tight, high-pitched aromas of black fruits, minerals, spices, printer's ink and licorice, complicated by nutty and earthy nuances. Juicy, savory and youthfully imploded; not hugely opulent or sweet but a wine of great density and class, showing a pliant texture and no rough edges. This seemed even more intense after I swallowed it, showing a palate-drenching quality with no weightiness. Doesn't have quite the dimension or floral complexity of the Nacional but a wine of great finesse, and built for decades of life."International Wine Cellar 96 points

"The 2011 Quinta do Noval has wonderful precision on the nose with blackberry, cassis, intriguing flinty notes and a whiff of smoke. It might not possess the power of the Nacional but it has freshness to spare. That comes through on the beautifully composed palate, which is underpinned by fine tannins that lend it a silky smooth mouthfeel. There is real intensity here, but it is very controlled with superb minerality on the finish. Excellent."Wine Advocate 94-96 points

Broadbent Boal Madeira 1978 Product #26993 (In Stock)
Broadbent Boal Madeira 1978 Broadbent Boal Madeira 1978

Very rare and limited.

"The 1978 Boal was aged in oak casks until bottling in February 2011. Compared directly against the Terrantez, the Boal does not quite have the same degree of complexity and harmony. It politely requests time to “tuck in its shirt” and “straighten its tie”. After several hours it offers scents of smoked walnut, a touch of peat, marmalade and furniture polish. The palate is very harmonious and seems to have more composure and refinement than the aromatics: cracked black pepper on the entry that reluctantly gives way to honey, bitter orange, marjoram and Clementine. It is not a heavyweight Boal, erring more towards Terrantez in terms of perceived sweetness, although it is graceful and elegant from start to finish."Wine Advocate 92 points
