There’s nothing not to like and everything to love about this robust blend of 50% Carignan, 35% Grenache, and 15% Syrah from the barren hills of Laguedoc’s Corbieres region.  Generous aromas of crushed blackberry, black plum, cracked pepper, cocoa, warm stones and more jump from the glass.  Take a sip and you’ll love how the briary blackberry, blueberry and raspberry fruit coat your mouth and the accents of chocolate, stone, herb and pepper give extra complexity.  While the flavors are big and the texture rich, there’s a welcome dose of juicy acidity and fine-grained tannins that make this refreshing drunk solo and flexible at table, too.

Our first 2016 rosé is a winner!  It’s equal parts Syrah and Carignan, grown and harvested fresh just for rosé.  After a few hours of fermentation, the juice is pressed off the black grape skins, giving it a just-right amount of color and structure while allowing the juice to retain all of its natural freshness and vibrancy.
 
As soon as you see this in your glass, you know you’re in for a treat.  It’s a beautifully transparent salmon pink that almost sparkles in sunshine.  Aromas of fresh picked strawberries and crushed red fruits – raspberries and cherries – get a lift from floral accents and a hint of citrus rind.  In the mouth, it’s bright and crisp with loads of berry fruit and just a touch of mineral, showcasing the short 2016 vintage’s silky texture and ripe fruit.  The acids come up on the finish and make your mouth water, leaving you looking for a little bite to eat or another refreshing sip.  Drink this on its own anytime you like, or pair it with anything from smoked salmon to fruited chicken salad.  “Berry” delicious!

Last year we brought you Damien Rozier’s outstanding Plan de Dieu 2012, a terrific, gutsy, Cotes du Rhone from the pebbly soils of one of the Southern Rhone’s most underappreciated regions.  Now we’re featuring his Cotes du Rhone Villages 2014 and we know it’s going to thrill you just as much!  It’s a robust blend of hand-harvested Grenache plus Mourvedre and Syrah with a bit of time in neutral wood casks.  But mainly it’s a ton of fun in your glass.

Big aromas of purple fruits – plum, berries, dark cherries – lead to juicy and fruit-filled flavors of crushed blue and black berries, sweet cherry, licorice and classic Rhone pepper and garrigue.  There’s a nice dose of fine-grained tannin here, making this a terrific match for casual foods, but more than enough suppleness and fruit to be enjoyable all on its own.  Ready to go tonight and sure to get even better over the next couple of years, this is a joyful wine to warm up any cold winter night.

Here’s proof that great farming and straight-ahead winemaking can deliver fine Chianti – and even finer value! – from outside the Classico zone.  More and more Chianti is either all Sangiovese or Sangiovese strengthened with dollops of Cabernet or Syrah.  Here, a family dedicated to natural, organic, farming turns back to Tuscan tradition to make Chianti from an old-school blend of grapes:  Sangiovese, Canaiolo, Colorino and Ciliegiolo.  Sangiovese gives the wine heft and structure, while Canaiolo adds volume, Colorino deepens the color, and Ciliegiolo – Sangiovese’s genetic parent – soft red cherry fruit.

In the fantastic 2015 vintage, all of this comes together to deliver a ripe, zesty, Chianti that’s very easy to drink.  Ripe black and red cherry fruit forms the wine’s core and gains interest and complexity from accents of crushed violets, red licorice, rich earth, and sweet spice accents.  There’s no oak influence at all, allowing the ripe fruit to shine through while retaining outstanding freshness and just the right touch of structure at the end.  A fine party Chianti, for sure, and one that will be as much fun to drink with a big bowl of pasta as with burgers or rosemary-scented pork.

Since the 2001 vintage first appeared in the store years ago, Dragon Rosé has been a consistent customer and staff favorite year after year.  The Lienard family tends about 50 acres of vines in Provence and makes this from Cinsault, Syrah, Grenache, and a nice dose of Rolle grown just for pink wine.  Grapes are grown specifically for rosé and are harvested at the perfect balance of fresh fruit and juicy acidity.  Once in the winery, they are lightly crushed and allowed to pick up a just right touch of pink color and red berry flavor before pressing and finishing fermentation in cool stainless steel tanks.

In the outstanding (if small) 2016 vintage, Dragon Rosé has a rich texture and just as much complexity and refreshing vibrancy as ever.  Zesty aromas and flavors of tangy fruit – strawberry, redcurrant, and blood orange – take center stage with a nice dose of rose petal and classic Provençal herb for complexity.  A squeeze of citrus and dusting of chalky mineral help chase the pretty flavors across your palate and leave your mouth watering on the crisp, spicy, stony dry finish.  A lovely match for everything from grilled salmon to Salade Niçoise and delightful to sip on its own.

Young Audrey Latard began making wine in 2008 after purchasing 3HA of vines to add to her family’s 1.5HA in and around the Rhone AOC village of Vinsobres.  Having tasted back-to-back vintages of her Cotes du Rhone and Vinsobres, I’m not quite sure why she isn’t on every list of Rhone Valley “up and comers.” Probably because she only makes 2,000 cases per year and has no time to go out and chase appointments with critics and the press.

Good news for us, though, as it means we’re able to get a small slice of her production and enjoy it at very fine prices.  This Vinsobres is a blend of 70% Grenache made in tank and 30% Syrah that we’re pretty sure aged in used oak (Audrey was a little vague).  What we know is that it’s a once very bold and very smooth!  Big aromas and flavors of crushed blackberry, black raspberry, roasted strawberry and dark plum gain complexity from notes of black olive, fresh thyme, and a hint of something floral (berry blossom?  Lavender?).  It glides across your palate like the finest silk, with enough body to know it’s there and leave your mouth full of flavor but no hard edges or grippy tannins.  Delicious now, perhaps more CdP-like in 2019, certainly fun through 2023.

From a terrific Rhone vineyard unjustly left out of the Chateauneuf du Pape AOC, this is a wine Robert Parker has called "a baby Chateauneuf du Pape," "a poor person's Chateauneuf," and "a serious effort that could easily be mistaken for a Chateauneuf du Pape." This year’s release is even more supple and open than past vintages.  As always, though it delivers loads of rich, ripe, Rhonish fruit - kirsch, cherry, raspberry - along with classic accents of lavender, thyme, black pepper, and black olive. Unlike most Chateauneuf, it's delicious right now and simply a steal at this price.

"What looks to be a beautiful Côtes du Rhône (which should be no surprise coming from this estate), the 2014 Côtes du Rhône Les Champauvins checks in as a blend of 70% Grenache, 20% Syrah and 10% Mourvedre, from rolled pebble soils, that was aged 70% in stainless steel (Grenache) and 30% in barrel (Syrah and Mourvedre.) Giving up lots of roasted Provençal herbs, garrigue, pepper and currant-like fruit, it is medium to full-bodied, ripe and nicely textured, with impressive purity of fruit. It has outstanding potential and will have a decade of overall longevity."Wine Advocate 88-91 points

Our first thought on tasting this robust, complex, Southern Rhone red?  "Tastes like a mini-Chateauneuf du Pape!" Most Cotes du Rhone is 80-100% Grenache, which usually means fun, if uncomplicated, easy-drinking reds. Here Grenache makes up only 60% of the blend, with big doses of Syrah (30%) and tricky to ripen Mourvedre (15%) ramping up the wine's richness, texture, and earthy, meaty, character.  A small dash of Cariganan adds spice and minerality that helps elevate l'Intripde far beyond average Cotes du Rhone quality and starts to challenge much more expensive Chateauneuf du Pape!

The wine opens with big aromas of dark fruit - blackberry, black raspberry, blueberry, plum - plus notes of roasted raspberry, smoked meat and garrigue - wild thyme, lavender and olive.  In the mouth it's remarkably dense and sweetly fruited for Cotes du Rhone, with more dark fruit, garrigue and spice flavors and a rich texture that borders on velvety.  The finish is long and earthy and complex, with fine tannins giving support for food but not interfering with solo sipping.  A delicious, outstanding value, red to enjoy now and over the next 5 years.

A very Meursault-styled Bourgogne Blanc made from Chardonnay vines averaging 30 years of age growing in and around Meursault.  Fermentation and aging take place in barrel, with about 15% new wood adding spice and older barrels and gentle stirring of the lees adding richness and volume.  It’s not a super-sophisticated wine, but it’s loaded with fruit and hazelnut and completely delicious to drink.

A stellar introduction to the joys of Chablis and the outstanding quality of Lyne Marchive’s Domaine des Malandes.  Lyne makes this from 8 small parcels scattered across the region with vines up to 60 years old.  In 2015, there’s an extra layer of richness and fruit but no shortage of refreshing citrus and salty stone minerality.  You’ll love this right now for the fresh fruit and saline finish and even more next year as it gains complexity.  Note that Burghound’s description matches mine, but the score is far too low.

Casaloste’s vineyards lie in the heart of the “Conca d’Oro” – the “Golden Shell” where you’ll also find growers like Fontodi, Castello dei Rampolla, and other of Chianti’s greats.  Proprietor and winemaker Giovanni d'Orsi's Chianti Classico is 90% Sangiovese and 10% Merlot, hand harvested at optimal ripeness, fermented in tank and then aged 12 months in French oak cask and barrique.  It’s loaded with rich Chianti black cherry fruit with accents of violet, leather and chocolate.  There’s an earthy complexity here that takes this to a higher level than the average Classico and fantastic mid-palate energy.  You’ll love it now -2023 with mushroom pasta and grilled beef..

Winemaker Michel Chapoutier made his name with Northern Rhone Syrah, so it’s hardly surprising that he has a deft hand with this tricky varietal in Roussillon, too.  The soils of this hilltop vineyard are full of granite which keeps ripeness in check (even in warm 2015) and loads the wine with fine minerality and focus.  Grill some lamb and dive right in!

"From what I consider one of the top terroirs for Syrah in the Roussillon, the 2013 Cotes du Roussillon Villages Lesquerde l’Esquerda comes from the higher-elevation, granite soils located around the village of Lesquerde. Made from 80% Syrah and 20% Grenache and brought up all in concrete tank, it offers up fabulous minerality in its raspberry, blackberry, licorice, violets and crushed-rock-like bouquet. Medium-bodied, supple, elegant and seamless, with impressive purity, freshness and length, drink this terrific Roussillon over the coming 5-7 years."Wine Advocate 93 points

Not really sure how much we need to say beyond Antonio Galloni’s review.  This is a stunning Syrah that includes a nice slug of whole cluster wine (for structure) and a dash of Viognier (for perfume), all grown in some of the finest Syrah vineyards in Santa Barbara’s Santa Ynez Valley.  There’s certainly plenty of size and volume here – it’s a hot growing area, after all.  But we were impressed by the freshness and balance and the way the deep blue/black fruit gets lifted by notes of fresh herb, smoked meat, and a touch of whole cluster spice.  Delicious now and just getting better through 2023.  A winner.

"Another huge overachiever, the 2013 Syrah hits the palate with an exotic mélange of varietal inky fruit, violets, lavender and sage, all with an extra kick of pulsating energy and salinity that the 2012 doesn't have. "The young Vincent Paris has turned out brilliant wines in 2015 that readers to need to snatch up. In addition to his Cornas releases, Paris releases a terrific St Joseph. The inky black-colored 2015 Saint Joseph les Côtes was completely destemmed and aged in a mix of tank and barrels. It offers a gorgeous perfume of violets, black and blue fruits, pepper and hints of mint in a full-bodied, layered and elegant style. Eyrie – the site of the Willamette Valley’s very first Pinot Noir and Chardonnay plantings – has been on fire with Chardonnay for years.  Here’s a little of the 2013 to whet your appetite for what’s to come.  As the reviews suggest, it’s all the better for having had a few years in bottle.

"The 2013 Estate Chardonnay comes from vines planted in 1965, the cuttings from Spring Mountain Vineyard that originally came from Wente. It has a very defined bouquet with citrus lemon, white peach and honeysuckle scents that are very focused. The palate is well balanced, resinous on the entry, again more a texturally focused white Oregon wine than one determined to cudgel you over the head with flavors. It becomes waxy toward the finish with a judicious dab of shaved ginger. This is understated and very succinct, but it deserves two or three years in bottle. Drink 2017-2028" Wine Advocate 90 points

"Occultum Lapidem" is Latin for "hidden stone,” and you’ll certainly find plenty of rocky, chalky, minerality at this wine’s core.  But, the stones are cloaked by intense fruit flavors and suggestions of savory roasted meat that will come forward with time.  This is essentially the same blend as the “regular” Cotes du Roussillon but from older vines, more limestone-rich soils and harvested at ridiculously low yields for this region.  Absolutely delicious right now with lamb, beef, or anything with loads of fresh herb, this will really sing from 2018 on.

"Another terrific vintage for this cuvee, the Syrah and Grenache-dominated 2014 Cotes du Roussillon Villages Latour de France Occultum Lapidem was harvested between the 12th of September and the 3rd of October with miniscule yields of 28 hectoliters per hectare. Completely destemmed and aged all in concrete tanks, its ruby opaque color is followed by complex notes of garrigue, leather, plums and violets. Medium to full-bodied, elegant and layered, with a great texture, this fruit-forward, balanced Roussillon is already hard to resist, but will continue drinking nicely for 6-7 years."Wine Advocate 92 points

This has been one of the best values in Willamette Valley Pinot Noir for years, but in 2015 it really soars.  This year 75% of the barrels came from sedimentary soils in Ribbon Ridge and Chehalem Mountain AVAs, 15% from Freedom Hill and 15% from volcanic soils in the Dundee Hills.  It’s genuinely lush and a bit showy now with opulent aromas and flavors of crushed black raspberry, dark cherries, exotic flowers, smoke and damp earth.  Mouthfilling and showing a glyceryl richness, but with vivid acids, fine tannins, and no excess of weight.  As Jim and Patty say, “There are seriously great bones here and this wine will stand up to many, many much higher priced bottlings… In short, this wine is a smoking deal!!

"Deep red. Expansive red berry and floral pastille scents and flavors show impressive energy and pick up a hint of smokiness as the wine opens up. Smooth and fleshy but lively as well; a late jolt of white pepper adds spicy bite. Generous but vibrant in character, finishing very long and sweet, with gentle tannins lending shape and subtle grip. Perhaps THE most stellar value of the offering for drinking now and over the next 10 years.  Fourchaume sits on the same slope and to the north of the Grand Crus and often gives glimpses of Grand Cru richness and power. Wonderful Chablis intensity and salty vibrancy here but also a very generous dose of rich, ripe, buttered pear.  Turns stony and showing a touch of wood-induced salty caramel (20% ages in 1-5 year-old barrel) on the long, pure, finish.  Extraordinary value here in a wine that’s almost too delicious today to justify waiting.

While Fourchaume is more rich and immediately delicious, this could be the better value if you’d like to cellar your Chablis for 3-10 years.  One of the warmer sites in Chablis and, like the Grand Crus, with prime southern exposure, Mont de Milieu gives wines of more body and richness and most other 1er sites.  The richer fruit benefits from a bit more wood (50% of 1-5 years age) to tame the fruit and allow true Chablis minerality and vivacity emerge.  Delicious now for the fruit and spice but at its best from 2020.

Giovanni d'Orsi crafts this wine from the very best Sangiovese grapes he grows in the very best region of Chianti - the Conca d’Oro – and blends in 8% or so of the best barrels of Merlot and other permitted varieties in the cellar.  He then ages his wine for 14 months in high-quality French oak barriques to soften Sangiovese’s hard hedges and add complexity.  It's from the great 2011 Chianti harvest, and it’s clear right away that there was more than enough fruit and power here to not only stand up to the Riserva treatment but to actually benefit from it.  It’s young and there’s still a bit of primary oak showing on the nose and palate, but the real story here is the dark, rich, cherry and berry fruit, the plush texture, and the long and mouthwatering finish.  Drink with a decant now or cellar through 2026.
