Poggio Alloro Chianti DOCG 2015 Product #31858 (In Stock)
Poggio Alloro Chianti DOCG 2015 Poggio Alloro Chianti DOCG 2015

Here’s proof that great farming and straight-ahead winemaking can deliver fine Chianti – and even finer value! – from outside the Classico zone.  More and more Chianti is either all Sangiovese or Sangiovese strengthened with dollops of Cabernet or Syrah.  Here, a family dedicated to natural, organic, farming turns back to Tuscan tradition to make Chianti from an old-school blend of grapes:  Sangiovese, Canaiolo, Colorino and Ciliegiolo.  Sangiovese gives the wine heft and structure, while Canaiolo adds volume, Colorino deepens the color, and Ciliegiolo – Sangiovese’s genetic parent – soft red cherry fruit.

In the fantastic 2015 vintage, all of this comes together to deliver a ripe, zesty, Chianti that’s very easy to drink.  Ripe black and red cherry fruit forms the wine’s core and gains interest and complexity from accents of crushed violets, red licorice, rich earth, and sweet spice accents.  There’s no oak influence at all, allowing the ripe fruit to shine through while retaining outstanding freshness and just the right touch of structure at the end.  A fine party Chianti, for sure, and one that will be as much fun to drink with a big bowl of pasta as with burgers or rosemary-scented pork.

Belle Pente Chardonnay Belle Pente Vyd 2012 Product #31772 (In Stock)
Belle Pente Chardonnay Belle Pente Vyd 2012 Belle Pente Chardonnay Belle Pente Vyd 2012

We thought Brian O'Donnell's 2010 Chardonnay was about as fine an Oregon white as we'd ever come across.  The 2012 - from perhaps the Willamette Valley's best vintage ever - is better still.  The grapes are from a 1999 planting in a small, 2 acre, plot of Belle Pente's steeply sloped Yamhill-Carleton vineyard.  Brian harvests the fruit in two passes, one early for freshness and one later for richness and flavor intensity.  Fermentation is in barrel (about 10% new), with half made of fine French oak and half from Oregon oak which Brian thinks brings out more fruit character.

The 364 cases of 2012 Chardonnay came out very well indeed. Rich aromas of pear, yellow apple and toasted hazelnut lead to a fleshy, full-bodied, palate of ripe orchard fruit and buttered nut with just a hint of tropical pineapple.  The finish is long and nutty with buttered apple flavors lingering over a light dusting of crushed stone.  Delicious stuff now - 2022 (at least)!

Dom Thierry Et Pascale Matrot Meursault Rouge 2014 Product #31808 (In Stock)
Dom Thierry Et Pascale Matrot Meursault Rouge 2014 Dom Thierry Et Pascale Matrot Meursault Rouge 2014

Less than 5% of Meursalut's vineyard area is planted to Pinot Noir, and almost all of that lies within the 1er Cru vineyards of Santenots and gets labeled Volnay.  This is from a small Pinot vineyard just outside on soils higher in clay than Chardonnay likes (but perfect for Pinot).  Fruit from 30+ year-old vines is partially crushed with about one-third the berries left intact in the fermenter.  The whole berries plus very gentle winemaking accentuates the fruit aromas and flavors here, although there's plenty of earthy spice to enjoy, too. Very fine with meaty fish as well as poultry.

"Spicy cherry fruit. Very spicy and a touch earthy on the palate. Halfway between creamy and chewy. Rounded and fresh at the same time. Lots of pleasure if not great finesse."  JancisRobinson.com 16/20 points

"A more restrained though not mute nose displays notes of cool red and dark berry aromas that exhibits hints of forest floor, earth and violet. There is good volume to the rich, seductive and caressing medium-bodied flavors that possess a sleek and vibrant mouth feel, all wrapped in a lingering if slightly less complex finale." Dom Des Malandes Chablis Grand Cru Les Clos 2015 Product #31848 (In Stock)
Dom Des Malandes Chablis Grand Cru Les Clos 2015 Dom Des Malandes Chablis Grand Cru Les Clos 2015

From 50+ year-old vines in Chablis's greatest Grand Cru, this is simply stunning.  Fermented and aged all in French oak (1-5 years old), this wants 3-4 years for the vanilla to fade - then watch out.  A truly amazing price for very "grand" Grand Cru white Burgundy.

"Dusty and restrained but prefiguring the intensity on the palate. More obvious fruit on the mid palate than the Vaudésir but I find the latter more penetrating and persistent. This is more rounded and gentle."  JancisRobinson.com 17/20

"Moderate pain grillé sets off cool and pure aromas of white flower, lemon rind, tidal pool and quinine that retain a good sense of freshness. There is good richness to the intensely stony full-bodied flavors that possess good power and ample amounts of palate staining dry extract on the youthfully austere and beautifully long finale. This clean and balanced effort is drier than most 2015s and is the best wine in the range this year."Allen Meadows 90-93 points
