Moulin De Gassac Guilhem Rose 2017 Product #33021 (In Stock)
Moulin De Gassac Guilhem Rose 2017 Moulin De Gassac Guilhem Rose 2017

2017 brings a nice update to the label for Moulin de Gassac Guilhem Rose and a bit of an upgrade to what is already one of our most popular pinks.  Nothing's changed about the wine growing or making. It’s equal parts Syrah and Carignan, grown and harvested fresh just for rosé.  After a few hours of fermentation, the juice is pressed off the black grape skins, giving it a just-right amount of color and structure while allowing the juice to retain all of its natural freshness and vibrancy.

The wine's a beautifully transparent salmon pink that sparkles in sunshine.  Aromas of fresh picked strawberries and crushed red fruits – raspberries and cherries – get a lift from floral accents and a hint of citrus rind.  In the mouth, it’s bright and crisp but also fleshy and rich, with loads of ripe berry fruit and just a touch of mineral. It fills your mouth with flavor and fun before the acids come up on the finish and make your mouth water, leaving you looking for a little bite to eat or another refreshing sip. “Berry” delicious!

Dom Foretal Beaujolais Villages 2015 Product #32964 (In Stock)
Dom Foretal Beaujolais Villages 2015 Dom Foretal Beaujolais Villages 2015

Jean-Yves Perraud farms just 20 acres of Gamay in Moulin-a-Vent and Villages-level vineyards between Fleurie and Chenas. In 2015, he turned out a winning, ripe, gulpable Beaujolais Villages that you'll love drinking for refreshment and pairing with roast chicken or any simple meal.  There's the concentration and ripeness you'd expect from 40 year-old vines and the generous 2015 harvest, with loads of dark red cherry and ripe strawberry fruit.  A blast of floral perfume and stony minerality adds interest and a just right pop of cherry acids keeps things fresh and fun.

Wine Advocate's score (87 points) misses the mark a bit, but the words are spot on: "The 2015 Beaujolais Villages needs a leash on the nose to hold back all those exuberant kirsch and dark cherry fruit bursting from the glass. But that is what you want from this vintage. The palate is succulent and ripe with dark cherries and strawberry, sweet to the core and though missing a little definition on the finish, you'd have consumed the entire bottle before you start vexing about that. Glug 'n enjoy."  Exactly!

Ch Les Conseillans Reserve De Pre-Carre 2015 Ch Les Conseillans Reserve De Pre-Carre 2015

A bold, rich, velvety Bordeaux made of ripe, rich, plummy, Merlot which gives the wine plenty of dark red fruit and a round, velvety, texture.  About 3% each of Malbec and Cabernets adds a touch of fresh minerality (Malbec) plush herbal/tobacco complexity and fine, firm, structure (Cabernets).  Aging in used French oak barrels adds polish and spice without overwhelming the fruit. You’ll love the bold redcurrant, black plum, and black raspberry fruit aromas and flavors and how the notes of crushed herb, tobacco and spice add complexity and depth.  And you’ll especially enjoy how the wine really envelopes your palate, feeling rich and plush and velvety from front to back. Casaloste Chianti Classico 2015 Product #33087 (In Stock)
Casaloste Chianti Classico 2015 Casaloste Chianti Classico 2015

Owner/winegrower Giovanni d'Orsi made remarkably fine Chianti Classico in the tricky 2013 and 2014 vintages.  But in the fine 2015 harvest – the best in Chianti since 2011 – he simply crushed it.  Organic Sangiovese (90%) and Merlot (10%) grapes are hand harvested and double sorted, fermented cool and aged gently for 12 months in 500 liter French oak casks.  It’s bold and deeply flavored for sure, but also amazingly silky and pure for all the ripeness.  Delicious already and built to improve for years.

"The 2015 Chianti Classico is a bold, juicy wine. Black cherry, lavender and expressive spice provide much of its exotic, alluring personality. Lush and racy, but with vibrant fruit and tons of Sangiovese structure, the 2015 is a winner."  Vinous (Galloni) 92 points

"A beauty, this silky red is packed with dark cherry, leather, iron and earth aromas and flavors. Harmonious and long, with a well-integrated structure and a mineral-tinged aftertaste. Drink now through 2029. 2,500 cases made. Smart Buy" Wine Spectator 94 points

Le Chai Duchet Vire Clesse Quintessance 2015 Product #32889 (In Stock)
Le Chai Duchet Vire Clesse Quintessance 2015 Le Chai Duchet Vire Clesse Quintessance 2015

Holy cow and zowie – this is just plain great Chardonnay!  "Quintessence" means "the most perfect or typical example of a quality or class" or "a refined essence or extract."  This is the Quintessence of Vire-Clesse.  It’s from a 4 acre plot of 80 year-old Chardonnay planted to incredible density – a whopping 4,400 vines per acre. Alexis Duchet farms this site organically with natural treatments for pests and the soil worked by horse-drawn plow.  Fermentation in stainless steal with the yeast from the vineyard and winery is followed by 10-12 months aging in concrete tank.  Natural, pure, simple.

Nothing simple about the wine, though.  The aromas and flavors are deep, complex, and satisfying with layers of ripe stone fruit, buttered pear, crushed hazelnut and salty mineral.  But structure and texture are what really excites here.  The wine enters with a prickle-point of acid, fans out to envelope and coat your palate with richness, and then snaps back into lazer-like minerally focus as fresh citrus acids bring up the rear.  And the finish goes on and on and your mouth waters gently and flavors of stone fruit, pear, apple, hazelnut and mint linger for a minute-plus.  A great wine right now that will certainly age nicely – but why wait?

Montenidoli Fiore Vernaccia Di San Gimignano 2016 Product #33082 (In Stock)
Montenidoli Fiore Vernaccia Di San Gimignano 2016 Montenidoli Fiore Vernaccia Di San Gimignano 2016

One of Tuscany's finest white wines, Elisabetta Fagiuoli's Vernaccia di San Gimignano regularly tops critics' ratings of wines from this often overlooked white DOCGs.  The 2016 edition has yet to be reviewed, but the 91 point write-up from Wine Advocate below for the 2015 hints at the wonderfulness you're going to taste in the even better 2016 vintage. There's a Riesling-like character to the minerality and core of ripe green apple and stone fruit and then Sancerre-like minerality, cut and vibrancy.  In all the years Wine Advocate has reviewed Italian wines, only 17 Vernaccia Di San Gimignano have earned higher ratings.  And Elisabetta made about a third of those.  And it's hard to believe any are better than this!

"Offers steady and clean aromas of saffron, white peach and juicy Golden Delicious apple. Delicate notes of crushed flint and granite fill in the rear. This is a clean and refreshing wine but it also offers the complexity and layering that distinguishes this specific wine within a group of peers. Winemaking is simple: it is fermented in stainless steel and goes directly into bottle with no oak contact."   Wine Advocate 91 points (for 2015 vintage)

A bold, steakhouse, red blending 75% Malbec and 25% Cabernet Sauvignon, all aged in French oak for a full year.  Dark, spicy, and powerfully ripe, there's fine freshness and vigor here to match the lushly layered red and black fruit.

"Bright, dark red with ruby highlights. Pure but subdued scents of dark raspberry, pepper, chocolate and menthol. Fine-grained, savory and fresh; an alluring, delineated midweight with spicy and floral high notes to its raspberry and currant fruit flavors. The peppery quality carries through the wine and perks up the finish. The tannins are firm but harmonious. Walter Scott Pinot Noir La Combe Verte 2016 Product #32997 (In Stock)
Walter Scott Pinot Noir La Combe Verte 2016 Walter Scott Pinot Noir La Combe Verte 2016

Pretty stupid good, the kind of Pinot that draws you in and then leaves you hearing yourself saying, “Wow!”  It’s mostly Eola Hills fruit with a few barrels of wine from Freedom Hill and a Dundee Hills site for depth and heft.  About 15% whole cluster fermentation adds spice and 30% new French oak gives extra smoky complexity and a soft, supple, mouthfeel.  There’s plenty of fruit here – you don’t have to work to “get” it – but also real complexity and potential to improve further still over the next 5 or so years.

“Spice-accented dark berries, cherry cola, Indian spices and woodsmoke on the nose, along with a subtle floral nuance. Shapely and supple on the palate, offering concentrated black raspberry, spicecake and rose pastille flavors and a sweetening mocha note. Finishes smoky and pliant, featuring gentle, slowly-mounting tannins and a strong echo of juicy dark fruit.”  Vinous (Raynolds) 91 points

"“Zesty and savory, with lively, smoky cherry aromas and layered raspberry, white pepper and orange peel flavors that linger toward refined tannins. Drink now through 2024. 1,250 cases made.”Wine Spectator 91 points

En Numeros Vermells Priorat AiAiAi 2016 Product #33145 (In Stock)
En Numeros Vermells Priorat AiAiAi 2016 En Numeros Vermells Priorat AiAiAi 2016

“AiAiAi” is the kind of thing you say with a smile when something surprising happens, and tasting Silvia Puig’s 2016 AiAiAi Priorat and then seeing the very reasonable price certainly qualifies!  Like all of Silvia’s ENV wines, this comes from organically farmed vineyards on the steep slopes of Catalunya’s Priorat region. The Garnacha Negra (about half the blend), Careinyena, Syrah,  Merlot and Garnacha Peluda (aka “Hairy Grenache) are harvested by hand, crushed gently, and fermented separately before aging in barrel.  When ready, Silvia creates a perfect blend and bottles her tiny production – just 2,733 bottles in 2016.

If you enjoyed the 2015 edition, you’re going to love the 2016 – all the fruit and even more minerality and tension.  Bold aromas of dark black fruit – blackberry, plum, blueberry and cherry – are framed by classic Priorat dusty slate notes.  On the palate, there’s a ton of dark, spicy, blueberry and plum fruit with touches of licorice, bitter chocolate, spice and slate.  With air the slate and dark chocolate flavors surge forward and a refreshing squirt of juicy raspberry emerges.  Finishes long and pure, with pretty fruit and a fine dusting of cracked slate.  Delicious right now and built to improve for 10+ years.  An exceptional value in young Priorat.

Patricia Green Pinot Noir Freedom Hill 2016 Product #33148 (In Stock)
Patricia Green Pinot Noir Freedom Hill 2016 Patricia Green Pinot Noir Freedom Hill 2016

What’s the greatest vineyard in Oregon’s Willamette Valley?  For years the most common answer would have been Seven Springs or Shea.  But today the 88 acres of vines planted on Freedom Hill, just outside Dallas, Oregon, is in contention for that honor.  As winemaker Jim Anderson says, this is “almost Eola-Amity,” sharing the western side of the AVA’s marine sedimentary soils but escaping some of the cold air that flows inland through the Van Duzer Corridor every afternoon.  Which means Freedom Hill Pinot Noir has the perfect blend of sedimentary soil vivacity and energy and warm site richness and power.

Jim Anderson and Patricia Green got their first fruit from Freedom Hill in vintage 2012, and they made what is clearly a benchmark interpretation of this great site.  In 2016, the wine blends fruit from blocks of Pommard, Dijon 115 and Coury clones of Pinot Noir and layers in a big dose of whole cluster spice and structure and about 25% new French oak. Clear, pure, black raspberry fruit plus notes of licorice, violets, and cola show on the nose and palate and the finish is long, persistent, and nicely structured.  Delicious with duck or mushrooms today and improving for a decade at least.

Dom Louis Michel Chablis 1er Cru Montee Tonnerre 2016 Product #33059 (In Stock)
Dom Louis Michel Chablis 1er Cru Montee Tonnerre 2016 Dom Louis Michel Chablis 1er Cru Montee Tonnerre 2016

Separated from the Grand Crus of Chablis by just a narrow ravine and sharing the Grand Crus' classic Kimmeridgian soils, Montee de Tonnerre is universally acclaimed as the best 1er Cru.  And at Louis Michel, it always delivers the grip, minerality, aging potential and very near the concentration of an outstanding Grand Cru - at a fraction of the price.  It's a bit quiet now - decant if you want to drink it tonight - but already shows fantastic purity, sizzlingly fresh green and white fruit, and loads of salty, stony, minerality.  Best 2020-2026.

“Light-medium yellow. A step up in aromatic complexity from the rest of the Louis Michel premier crus, but with its shy fruit element currently overshadowed by smoky oyster-shell minerality. Similarly, the wine's stone and citrus fruit flavors are dominated in the early going by rich, saline, rocky minerality. This structured wine finishes precise, shapely, firm and long. Excellent potential here, but this will need cellaring.”  Vinous (Tanzer) 90-92 points

Terre Nere Etna Rosso Santo Spirito 2015 Product #32960 (In Stock)
Terre Nere Etna Rosso Santo Spirito 2015 Terre Nere Etna Rosso Santo Spirito 2015

The two vineyards in Santo Spirito were the last plots acquired by Terre Nere and are a bit further down Mount Etna's slopes than the estate's other vineyards.  The site's deep volcanic ash soils and slightly warmer microclimate help these 40-100 year-old vines develop superb richness and plushness of texture.  A year and a half in French oak rounds off tannins without adding overt oaky notes.  Utterly irresistible now and improving through 2025.

"Fantastic aromas of flowers, dark berries and cherries follow through to a full body, round and velvety tannins and a flavorful finish. Needs a year or to two soften the tannins. Drink in 2020."  James Suckling 94 points

"Very perfumed nose of red cherry, raspberry jam, cinnamon, nutmeg and minerals complicated by tar and shoe polish. Clean, fresh and juicy, but with a sultry quality to the mineral but also ripe red berry and cherry flavors. Clean and fresh on the long, stoney finish. A knockout Santo Spirito that combines size and luscious sweetness like no other Etna Rosso from Terre Nere this year."  Vinous (d'Agata) 94 points

Dom La Barroche Chateauneuf Du Pape Signature 2015 Product #32749 (In Stock)
Dom La Barroche Chateauneuf Du Pape Signature 2015 Dom La Barroche Chateauneuf Du Pape Signature 2015

This is what Chateauneuf du Pape is supposed to taste like!  When you tip the glass, a rush of raspberry, black cherry, and that blend of lavender and sappy herbs the French call garrigue pretty much smacks you in the nose.  Then those scents turn into bold, rich, super-deep, flavors that fill up your mouth with full-bodied joy – but somehow never get heavy or hot.  And, at the end, this silky, spicy, wine leaves you with cracked pepper, herb, and sweet fruit and tannins ready to stand up to grilled lamb or a seven years or so in cellar.

"The 2015 Châteauneuf-du-Pape from the young Julien Barrot is a perfumed, elegant release that's loaded with notions of currants, kirsch, licorice, and spice. It's silky, elegant, ethereally textured and long, with the freshness and classic style of the vintage. As usual, the classic cuvée is a blend of roughly 60% Grenache, 18% Mourvèdre and the balance Clairette Rose, Cinsault, Syrah, and Vaccarèse."  JebDunnuck.com 92 points

"Fermented in concrete eggs and aged in foudres and stainless steel tanks. Vivid ruby. Highly expressive cherry and black raspberry aromas are complicated by energetic floral and Asian spice nuances. Sappy, sweet and broad in the mouth, offering juicy, densely packed red and dark berry flavors that become deeper as the wine open up. Stains the palate and shows impressive vivacity on the persistent, floral-dominated finish, which is framed by silky, harmonious tannins."  Vinous (Raynolds) 91-93 points

Terre Nere Etna Rosso Calderara Sottana 2015 Product #32963 (In Stock)
Terre Nere Etna Rosso Calderara Sottana 2015 Terre Nere Etna Rosso Calderara Sottana 2015

Of all Terre Nere's vineyards, Calderara Sottana is the stoniest, with black volcanic rocks littering the soil and locking in daytime heat.  These 50-100 year-old vines create a floral, spicy, wine that in 2015 will tempt immediately and reward a decade plus of cellar time.

"Ripe red cherries, treacle tart, sour plums, and some blueberries frame the nose. Medium body, round tannins and a fruity finish. Drink now."  James Suckling 91 points

"Vivid medium dark red. Piercing aromas of red cherry, minerals and soy sauce. The flavors are similar to the aromas, with an underlying element of crushed rock that adds a welcome saline note contributing freshness. Very mineral round and smooth, this is atypically shaped for a Calderara Sottana Etna Rosso. Closes long with hints of orange peel, Mediterranean herbs and minerals. The bright mineral sheen and Burgundy-like aromas and flavors are typical Calderara Sottana, though this strikes me as being just a little softer and rounder than usual."  Vinous (d'Agata) 93 points

Dom Alain Gautheron Chablis Grand Cru Valmur 2015 Product #33032 (In Stock)
Dom Alain Gautheron Chablis Grand Cru Valmur 2015 Dom Alain Gautheron Chablis Grand Cru Valmur 2015

Here’s a wine that shows the challenge of tasting very young white Burgundy.  Because the wine certainly is reduced and showing it's sulfur when you first open it (although Ed Addiss, Gautheron's importer, says it's already much less than six months ago).  Be patient.  If you want to drink this now, decant it for an hour. Better, open it, pour off a half glass, and then put it in the fridge for 24 hours (which I did).  Or best, stash some away and let a few years of cellar time work its magic.

As the sulfur blows off/integrates, you’ll discover a gem of a wine from a half-acre plot of 55 year-old vines growing in the outstanding Grand Cru of Valmur, right next to Les Clos in site and quality.  The captivating aromas include white and yellow fruits, crushed limestone, and hints of nutmeg and a bit of toasted nut.  On the palate there is good richness to balance the intense, vigorous, structure of bracing acidity and salty crushed rock.  A core of lemon pulp, crisp green apple, and walnut flavors slowly emerge along with a bare hint of fresh chervil.  The finish is long, pure, stony, salty and supremely mouthwatering.  This will really sing from 2020 and will still be going strong in 2035 – all at a price lower than you’d pay for most average village-level Puligny-Montrachet.
