Not the most “impressive” or “important” wine in this set, but very much a favorite!  The Casa Benasal vineyard is just down the road from the main Pago Casa Gran estate and the site of a winery built more than 300 years ago.  While the vines aren’t quite that old, you can taste the concentration and class that comes from mature vines on a great site.  All organic farming with year-round cover crops to encourage balance in the vines plus low-impact wine making that gets all the goodness of the grapes into the bottle intact.  A blend of 40% Monestrell, 40% Garnacha Tintorera and 20% Syrah

I’m not sure what alchemy is at work here, but at first pour this smells like really good Chateauneuf du Pape:  bold crushed raspberry and loads and loads of thyme, lavender, rosemary and black olive.  Then, take a sip and, WOW!, does this taste great.  There’s a big dose of crushed strawberry and raspberry at the core with accents of sweet spice, dried herb, black olive and the barest hint of chocolate.  The freshness and texture are great, with a nice sense of plushness in the midpalate leading to lightly dusty tannins and a pop of raspberry juice on the finish.  Fresh fruity fun here!

Wow - just plain wow.  If you want to know why 2016 could be one of the greatest vintages ever for Austria's Grüner Veltliner, just try this.  As Jancis Robinson explains, “The finest Grüner Veltliners in the world come from seriously distinguished sites, with the greatest concentration of them being west of Vienna on the Wachau's famous south-facing terraces on the bank of the Danube” – exactly where perfectionist Martin Mittlebach farms his vineyards and makes Tegernseerhof wines. Wachau Grüner has the potential to deliver more volume, richness and intensity than wines from nearby Kamptal, and that’s certainly what you found here in 2015 and will again this year. This is the kind of wine that goes for $30-$50 at other, more promotionally-oriented, estates.  At half that price, it’s pretty compelling stuff.

Ripe, powerful, Garnacha Tintorerea (35%), Monastrell (35%) and Syrah (30%) takes to a little wood well, and here this organic estate in Spain’s Valencia region has used French oak with skill and class.  Each grape varietal and vineyard plot is harvested and fermented separately with gentle, all manual, punchdowns for easy extraction of color and very soft tannins.  Then a crane lifts up the small fermenters so the young wine can drain freely and without pumping into tank and (for 50%) into seasoned French oak.

The oak influence shows up as an extra layer of spice, smoke, and chocolate accents to the dark black cherry, cassis and black raspberry fruit aromas you’ll find pouring from the glass.  This is richer, deeper, darker and creamier than the Elegant Tinto, with bold flavors of dark raspberry and baked strawberry fruit wrapped in layers of vanilla, chocolate and sweet spice.  The ripe fruit and oak are nicely balanced by a band of savory minerality and squirt of berry acids for freshness and focus.  The sword this is named for was as long as a man’s arm, and that’s about how long the wine is, too!

Joe crafts this cuvee, named for his daughter, from vines growing on pure, calcium and clay-rich, loess soils on different parts of the hill.  He picks some of these sites early to maximize crispness and green, tangy, fruit notes.  Others are harvested late for maximum ripeness, more exotic fruit, and density on the palate.  A complex formula leads to a complex wine, layered with notes of pineapple, Clementine, apricot, Golden Delicious, green herb and dusty white pepper.  The texture is rich and luxurious, sitting on your lounge with good weight balanced by dusty, crushed stone, minerality.  The finish is simply endless, coating your palate and leaving pops of fruit, mineral, pepper and more to savor on and on.  A great seafood sausage would be great here, although most anything fried or with a bit of cream sauce would satisfy.

You may have heard that vintage 2014 was “challenging” in Tuscany.  That’s not true – at most estates it was downright awful.  Cold, wet and cloudy weather throughout the growing season meant most growers were unable to ripen their fruit fully and had to battle constantly with rot in the vineyard and winery.  If they were able to make Chianti Classico at all, it was almost always light in color and body, tart and tangy, and lacking in concentration or depth.

Which is why this 2014 is such a stunning treat!  The combination of heavy, hard, handwork in the vineyards all season long, higher altitude and well-drained vineyards, and using all the fruit normally destined for the Riserva Chianti in the Classico gives a wine with fine dark color and plenty of concentration and richness.  At this young state, it’s all about the rich raspberry and black cherry fruit with subtle accents of violets and oak spice.  Round and full on the palate, but never heavy or think, the fruit courses across your palate to finish clean, pure and fruity.  Fine tannins make this a winner with pasta dishes and even better with a slab of just-grilled, grass-fed, beef.

“Arenal” refers to the sandy, free-draining, soils where Pago Casa Gran grows the grapes for this organically farmed blend of Garnacha Tintorera and Monestrell.  “Falcata” is the name of a special sword that was common in Valencia hundreds of years ago.  Each blade was made to measure for an individual warrior, forged and trimmed to be the same length as their arm.  When the fighter died, his blade was buried with him.

Winemaker Carlos Laso crafts his Arenal to reflect the region’s heritage by marrying the purity and elegance of well-drained, sandy, soils with Valencia’s intense ripeness and lots of minerality and spice from 14 months in French oak.  The wine is dark and deeply colored with powerful aromas of ink, dark black raspberry and a hint of mint.  On the palate it fills your mouth with deep dark fruit complicated by accents of earth, licorice, and chocolate.  The firm, powerful, finish makes it easy to see how this will develop over the next 10 years, but there’s no reason you can’t enjoy it now with grilled lamb!

Full confession – we’re not normally fans of Italian “Riserva” wines.  Even though most use the estate’s best fruit, the extra time in oak (up to a year) often dries the wine out, kills the fruit, and gives sticky, drying, tannins that rob the wines of all their fun.  Here, though, we have a Chianti Classico Riserva that soars above the norm in every way!

Francesco Daddi made the first vintage in 2012 in honor of his father, Giuland.  It’s built on the estate’s best Sangiovese plus a splash of Malvasia Nero – a favorite blend of Giuland’s – and given 18 months in French oak followed by extra time in concrete tank and bottle.  The aromas are sexy and sophisticated, with deep cherry/berry fruit framed by notes of fresh earth, sweet spice, and light herb.  There’s a ton going on in your mouth, but the bold burst of black raspberry fruit pulses through the layers of tobacco, spice, smoke and fresh flower flavors.  The fruit keeps on pumping through the long, complex, and firm finish in a wine that has the structure to age a decade and shine now with rich, dry-aged, beef.

1,171 bottles made; 804 imported.  The 2015 edition of Silvia Puig’s white Grenache was easily the best wine from this tricky grape I’d ever tasted.  The 2016 edition is better.  A warm, very dry, season pushed yields and berry sizes down with corresponding gains in both richness and structure and the combination of fermenting in open top oak barrels and aging in stainless steel accentuates both.

The best word to describe the 2016 edition is one I’d never thought to use for Garnaxta Blanca:  precision.  Fragrances and flavors of white peach, fresh pear, tart pineapple, sliced almond and just a hint of honey jump from the glass and coat your mouth.  Both the palate and finish are wondrously long, with a dusty slate minerality appearing in the middle and gaining strength and breadth on the mouthwatering, pineapple and tangerine, finish.  I’m really not sure how this could possibly be better – although that’s what I thought about the 2015, too.

300 bottles made; 150 imported.  Here’s a rarity at multiple levels – you don’t find many dry wines made from Sherry’s choice of sweet wine grapes.  And you certainly don’t find any I know of this great – and won’t find much of this one anywhere!  She managed to source just enough grapes to fill one barrel with juice for fermentation and 4 months aging before finishing the wine in stainless steel.

If you remember Silvia’s PX from her former Vinedos de Ithaca estate, this represents a stylistic change, emphasizing freshness and vigor over richness and almost oily texture.  Fantastic aromas of exotic flowers, white peach, grainy pear, fennel frond and lemon verbena with similar flavors that almost quiver and vibrate with energy in the mouth.  Plenty of depth and intensity here leading to a long, supremely fresh, finish of pear, peach, crunchy fennel, lemon and more lingering on and on.  A stellar match for sushi, shrimp salad, cold scallops, or summer nights.

Spencer Hoopes doesn’t seek out a lot of attention or make a lot of wine – only 2,500 cases or so in total.  So even though he’s been farming some of Napa’s finest Cabernet fruit at his White Horse Vineyard in Oakville since 1983 and making top-notch, great value, wines since the mid-1990s, you may not know the name.  Which is a good thing – it’s the reason we’re able to bring you this beauty for so much less than wines of this pedigree and praise normally command these days.  Decant for an hour and drink with grilled beef or lamb, but be sure to save a few to enjoy over the next 10 years.

This is what Chateauneuf du Pape is supposed to taste like!  When you tip the glass, a rush of raspberry, black cherry, and that blend of lavender and sappy herbs the French call garrigue pretty much smacks you in the nose.  Then those scents turn into bold, rich, super-deep, flavors that fill up your mouth with full-bodied joy – but somehow never get heavy or hot.  And, at the end, this silky, spicy, wine leaves you with cracked pepper, herb, and sweet fruit and tannins ready to stand up to grilled lamb or a seven years or so in cellar.

"Fermented in concrete and aged in used foudres and demi-muids. Vivid ruby. Deep, smoke-accented dark berry and floral pastille scents are sharpened by a note of peppery spice. Smoky and sweet in the mouth, offering concentrated boysenberry and cherry flavors and a hint of candied violet. Shows very good power and energy and finishes with excellent focus and length; velvety, late-arriving tannins add shape. Quite serious for an entry-level bottling; I'd bet on this making a solid cellar candidate."  Vinous (Raynolds) 91-93 points

1,711 bottles made; 600 imported.  This wine has always been good, but in 2015 it takes a big step up to “hoo boy and zowie – gimme more of that right now” status.  Intended to be the more open, ready to enjoy, of Silvia’s two “main” Priorats the 2015 is once again a blend of Garnatxa Negre, Garnatxa Peluda (aka “Hairy Grenache”) and Carinyena from old vineyards scattered across Priorat.  She ferments the wine in 300 and 500 liter French oak casks that have had one of the ends removed, and then puts the ends back on to let the wine age for 13 months.

As always, this is hugely ripe and fleshy and delicious right now (although it’s going to peak in 5-10 years).  But the 2015 adds in astonishing purity, finesse and balance for such a big, boisterous, wine.  Bold aromas of slate and wild blackberry with a touch of spice lead to plump, powerful, flavors of black raspberry, blackberry, wild blueberry, milk chocolate and – of course – crushed slate. The dusty slate and a beam of razor sharp acidity give these big, powerful, flavors shape and definition from front to back, but the rich, ripe, fruit really sings out at the end over perfectly polished tannins.  A fun, wild, ride now but promising even more sophistication with maturity.  Oh – and it’s yummy, too

Mike Etzel's Willamette Valley blend - featuring a mixture of Estate and purchased fruit - has been going from strength to strength in recent years.  It consistently pulls down 91-93 point ratings from Wine Spectator and Vinous, and the 2015 is the most complete example we've tasted to date.  You'll find all the rich, deep, fruit featured in the 91/92 point 2014 with a touch better drive and a dollop more of plush, velvety, tannins.  A delicious wine with salmon, duck, or squab today and likely to take on a touch more weight and richness with time.  Exciting stuff here!

"Beautiful, gem-toned clarity. Explosively aromatic, this wine begins with fresh, bright fruit-juiciness leading to a more savory palate. 1,215 bottles made; 600 bottles and 20 magnums imported.  The “White Label” is Silvia’s flagship and this year’s model harks back to the simply stellar 2011 vintage that was our introduction to the ENV project.  It’s a blend of Garnatxa, Syrah and a splash of Carinyena fermented in open-top 300 liter and 500 liter French oak and then aged 13 months in those same barrels (with the tops back on).  Sounds simple, but that hides the intense amount of work that goes into this wine, from selecting the very best French oak, to meticulously sorting the fruit of ultra-old vines, to manually punching down the fermentations and then coaxing out the best of each lot from barrel to bottle.

So what’s the 2015 like?  Jonas Gustafsson, Silvia’s importer, sums it up nicely:  “This vintage is all about class, concentration and power!”  You’re going to need a little patience and time here, but swirling unveils a profound nose of dark fruit, sweet spice, crumbled baker’s chocolate and a generous dose of hot, smoky, slate.  In the mouth, a wildly complex ride featuring torrents of blackberry and black raspberry fruit, subtle currents of lead pencil, chocolate and spice, and bold gusts of dusty blue slate.  It’s at once velvety textured and immensely powerful, with huge drive through a long, blue/black fruit, iron ore and spice finish.  Decant and grill up some lamb right now.  Or in 2025.  Or 2035.  Etc.

For more than two decades since the first vintage in the early 1990s, this has been one of Oregon's benchmark Pinot Noir bottlings.  And if the wine has lost the thick texture and dense wood influence of earlier years, it has given up nothing in terms of inentsity, complexity and satisfaction.  Mainly own-rooted Pommard and Wadenswil clone from the early 1990s plus a little Dijon clone planted as the old vines failed, this is the essence of Ribbon Ridge Pinot Noir, with lovely red fruit and huge lengh.  As Vinous said in their 94 point review of the 2014:  "Manages to be rich as well as lively, with no rough edges that I can detect."

No point in overselling this one, because Silvia made only 654 bottles and Jonas only got 300 (and both he and I have kept some back for ourselves).  “Quasi Centenaria” roughly translates to “about 100 years old,” a reference to this gnarly old Carignan vineyard planted right around 1919.  The vines grow on two steep, rock-covered, slopes, one facing north and the other south, located in the heart of Priorat.  Given the age of the vines, the lack of water, extreme heat, and absence of nutrients in the soil, these vines struggle to give 300 grams of fruit per bush – enough for about two-thirds of a bottle per vine.

The wine is rich and long and astonishing, not so much for its intensity of blue/black fruit, chocolate and spice, which you’d expect from such old vines growing in a place like this, as it is for the amazing freshness.  It’s youthfully closed now – tasting it reminds me of trying to understand young Guigal La Las – but you can sense the depth of fruit and appreciate the “iron fist in velvet glove” power already.  A remarkable wine to leave along until 2020 and drink for decades to come.

1,215 bottles made; 600 bottles and 20 magnums imported.  The “White Label” is Silvia’s flagship and this year’s model harks back to the simply stellar 2011 vintage that was our introduction to the ENV project.  It’s a blend of Garnatxa, Syrah and a splash of Carinyena fermented in open-top 300 liter and 500 liter French oak and then aged 13 months in those same barrels (with the tops back on).  Sounds simple, but that hides the intense amount of work that goes into this wine, from selecting the very best French oak, to meticulously sorting the fruit of ultra-old vines, to manually punching down the fermentations and then coaxing out the best of each lot from barrel to bottle.

So what’s the 2015 like?  Jonas Gustafsson, Silvia’s importer, sums it up nicely:  “This vintage is all about class, concentration and power!”  You’re going to need a little patience and time here, but swirling unveils a profound nose of dark fruit, sweet spice, crumbled baker’s chocolate and a generous dose of hot, smoky, slate.  In the mouth, a wildly complex ride featuring torrents of blackberry and black raspberry fruit, subtle currents of lead pencil, chocolate and spice, and bold gusts of dusty blue slate.  It’s at once velvety textured and immensely powerful, with huge drive through a long, blue/black fruit, iron ore and spice finish.  Decant and grill up some lamb right now.  Or in 2025.  Or 2035.  Etc.

When Robert Parker tasted the 2005 Pure  - just the third vintage for then 25 year-old Julien Barrot – he was blown away, calling it “magnificent 100% old vine Grenache offering called Pure, which is about as close to a great vintage of Rayas as one will find.”  That Rayas comparison comes up often, and while this is hardly inexpensive, compared to Rayas…  Well worth having to drink from 2020 on.

"Most of these vines are now over 115 years old; fermented in large concrete eggs and aged in a large older foudre. Lurid ruby. A complex, highly perfumed bouquet evokes fresh dark berries, cola, incense and potpourri, and a hint of smoky minerality emerges with air. Juicy, penetrating black raspberry, bitter cherry and lavender pastille flavors show superb depth and energy and stretch out to become sweeter on the back half. Shows excellent clarity and spicy lift on a long, sappy finish framed by velvety, slow-building tannins. For such a generous wine, there's no lack of vivacity here."  Vinous (Raynolds) 93-95 points

"One of the most impressive barrel samples of this cuvée I can remember, the 2015 Châteauneuf du Pape Pure is always almost 100% Grenache that comes from a tiny parcel of sandy soils located right at the junction of the Grand Pierre, Pointu and Rayas lieux-dits. Partially destemmed, vinified in concrete and aged in a single, ancient foudre, this sensational-looking Châteauneuf du Pape dishes out incredible amounts of ripe cherries, blueberries, crushed rocks and crushed flowers. Big, full-bodied, thick and unctuous, it got a few expletives in the notes, and for all its size and weight, it stays lively, pure and even elegant. My money is on this beauty being one of the top wines in the vintage."Wine Advocate 95-97 points
