Tussock Jumper Malbec Tulum Valley 2016 Product #33247 (In Stock)
Tussock Jumper Malbec Tulum Valley 2016 Tussock Jumper Malbec Tulum Valley 2016

I guess you can call the red garment on the cow on the label a “jumper,” but what a small clump of more dense than usual grass (a “Tussock”) has to do with this wine is beyond us.  And since we automatically think “Mendoza” when we see Argentine Malbec, it takes a moment to notice that this is from the Tulum Valley near San Juan, about two hours north of Mendoza.  But what’s clear as soon as you taste it, though, is that this is just a great house red!

This is 100% Malbec grown at lower altitudes than in Mendoza (600 vs 6,000+  feet) at lower alcohol levels (just 13.0%!).  But it takes to wood just as well at its Mendoza cousins, as you’ll notice right away from the way spicy, coffee, scents complement the notes of dark black raspberry, blackberry and plum.  On the palate, it’s fleshy and feels full but not heavy, serving up big spiced blackberry and red raspberry fruit flavors with accents of roasted coffee, cocoa and spice.  Spiced fruit, a touch of vanilla bean, and gentle smoke flavors linger across a broad, smooth, finish.  Fun to sip, nicely matched with anything from pizza to burgers to lamb, and priced to share with a crowd.

Donna Laura Ali Toscana Rosso 2016 Product #33349 (In Stock)

One of our favorite experiences at the tasting table is when we try a wine and immediately think, “Wow – that tastes a lot more expensive than it is!”  That’s exactly what happened when we tried this ripe, plump, and very pleasing Tuscan Sangiovese and what we think you’ll say, too.  The wine opens with bold and very Chianti-like aromas of super-ripe black cherry, crushed violets, sweet tobacco and hints of leather and spice.

Take a sip and it’s even better!  Oodles of black cherry and blackberry fruit, purple flower, spice, leather and cured tobacco leaf flavors that push back deeply on the surprisingly long palate.  The fruit turns brighter and fresher with air, but remains nicely ripe and generous.  The texture is wonderfully and invitingly round and rich – much fleshier than the 13.0% alcohol suggests – and the fruit keeps on pumping out over fine, food-friendly, tannins.  Sure, this will sing with pizza and classic Italian fare, but it’s going to shine just as brightly with burgers or brats off the grill.  A fruity fun bottle at a very fine price.

Kellerei Kaltern Caldaro Pinot Grigio 2017 Product #33297 (In Stock)
Kellerei Kaltern Caldaro Pinot Grigio 2017 Kellerei Kaltern Caldaro Pinot Grigio 2017

A stunning follow-up to the James Suckling 92 point 2016 edition!  As Wine Enthusiast said in their 90 point review of the 2010 Caldaro Pinot Grigio - the first vintage we introduced you to - "It's hard to imagine Pinot Grigio better than this."  Over the past five vintages, the wine has gone from strength to strength and is now firmly ensconced as our all-time Pinot Grigio champion - no other comes close.

The 2017 opens with creamy aromas of peach, lime skin, and white flowers.  Take a sip and you’ll find a wine that’s at once crisp and rich and bursting with green pear, apple, peach and citrus and a long, mouthwatering, saline-inflected finish.  Just about the perfect all-around white to have on hand this summer, it’s a great match with everything from Spring salads to fresh fish, spicy Thai or cilantro accented Vietnamese dishes.  Or, just sip it all by itself for a delightful and delicious refreshment break.  Pinot Grigio for people who like flavor in their wine and anyone who appreciates outstanding value.

Dom Du Dragon Grande Cuvee Rose Cotes De Provence 2017 Product #33178 (In Stock)
Dom Du Dragon Grande Cuvee Rose Cotes De Provence 2017 Dom Du Dragon Grande Cuvee Rose Cotes De Provence 2017

Since the 2001 vintage first appeared in the store years ago, Dragon Rosé has been a consistent customer and staff favorite year after year.  The Lienard family tends about 50 acres of vines in Provence and makes this from Cinsault, Syrah, Grenache, and a nice dose of Rolle grown just for pink wine.  Grapes are grown specifically for rosé and are harvested at the perfect balance of fresh fruit and juicy acidity.  Once in the winery, they are lightly crushed and allowed to pick up a just right touch of pink color and red berry flavor before pressing and finishing fermentation in cool stainless steel tanks.

The 2017 edition is another winner, blending the ripeness of the 2015 and 2016 editions with a zesty, freshening, acidity.  Aromas and flavors of crushed raspberry and fresh strawberry gain complexity from a nice dash of Provencal herb and a wisp of sweet spice.  Starts tangy, broadens with nice richness, and then finishes crisp, refreshing, and dry with tart red berry and citrus pith lingering.  The interplay between rich ripeness and stony, dry, mouthwatering acidity is what we mean when we talk about “tension in wine.”  But if you prefer “Stupid Delicious,” we’re ok with that, too. This is what the pink wines of Provence are all about!

Dom D'eole Rose Coteaux d'Aix-en-Provence 2017 Product #33235 (In Stock)
Dom D'eole Rose Coteaux d'Aix-en-Provence 2017 Dom D'eole Rose Coteaux d'Aix-en-Provence 2017

Organic Grapes!  Winemaker Matthias Wimmer and owner Christian Raimont grow this complex blend of Grenache, Syrah, Cinsault, Grenache Blanc, Rolle, and Mourvedre with more care than most Chateauneuf (and yields more like fine Burgundy!).  The vineyards have been certified organic since 1996, yields are always 30 hectoliters/hectare or less, and grapes harvested by hand.  After a gentle crush and brief time on the skins to add just a pretty touch of color, each lot finishes fermentation in steel before blending for complexity and depth of flavor.

The wine is a lovely pale salmon and rose petal pink in the glass.  Give it a swirl, and you'll find the essence of ripe summer strawberry, juicy watermelon, and crunchy Rainier cherry fruit with subtle accents of crushed rose petal and garrigue.  Bright on entry, silky smooth on the mid-palate, and then bracingly fresh and dry and mineral-laced with bold flavors of ripe peach, red berries and Provençal herb.  Finishes long and fresh with pretty fruit and a hint of chamomile lingering.  This stylish, captivating, pink is wonderfully refreshing on its own but has enough structure to delight with salads, chicken, or grilled seafood.

Ch Les Valentines Rose Cotes De Provence 2017 Product #33245 (In Stock)
Ch Les Valentines Rose Cotes De Provence 2017 Ch Les Valentines Rose Cotes De Provence 2017

Once again, simply the best rosé we’ll offer this year.  But brutal frosts in early spring meant that Gilles and Pascale Pons lost half their fruit at the season’s start.  What was left matured beautifully with remarkable purity and tension. As always, this blend of Grenache and Cinsault from 30 year-old vines in certified organic vineyards just a few miles inland from Saint Tropez offers both classic Provençal freshness and enough heft and body for amazing versatility at table.  But this year, it will be sold out all too soon.

The color here is a showstopper – such a delicate, shimmering, pale pink that it’s hard to believe there could be any weight or flavor at all.  Give it a sniff, though, and you’ll start to smile as you enjoy the generous aromas of spring strawberries, cherries, tangerine, spice and Provençal herb.  Take a sip, and your eyes will widen as this pale pink beauty fills your mouth with a rich, creamy, textured explosion of ripe currant, cherry, and lemon/lime fruit with savory accents of white pepper and crushed herb.  And, as the dry, mineral-laced, finish makes your mouth water, you’ll do the only reasonable thing – grab the glass for yet another sip.

Montenidoli Canaiuolo Rosato Toscana 2017 Product #33317 (In Stock)
Montenidoli Canaiuolo Rosato Toscana 2017 Montenidoli Canaiuolo Rosato Toscana 2017

Before our note, here's how Elisabetta Fagiuoli writes about her lovely rose:  "A moment of happiness, far from whites and reds, from labels and conformity: It's the aperitif that opens lines of communication, it's the cup that assuages thirst, a moment of rest and relaxation, to celebrate a baptism, a first communion or a wedding. At Montenidoli, we've selected Canaiuolo, which has the perfumes of white grapes and the color of reds. It's pale rose pink, with the perfumes of the flowers that blossom in the woods in spring, while the calcareous fossil-rich soils offer rich savory flavors and a soft enveloping finish...The perfect aperitif, if possible in a Champagne flute. A delicately colored rosé with floral aromas, full soft flavors, and a savory finish."

After that, I got nothin’.  Except to say that this is crisp, crunchy, and mind-blowingly refreshing now and will get richer, deeper, and creamier over the next year or two.  To minimize sulfur use, this was allowed to retain a fair bit of natural CO2, so it's worth decanting or giving a big shake or two nown. Drink it with fresh veggies and cheeses from the farmers’ market in spring, pair it with salmon and poultry over summer, and make sure to have some held back for Thanksgiving dinner – 2018 or 2019, as you prefer. A deeply authentic, utterly delicious rose.

Bodegas Roda Sela Rioja 2014 Product #33129 (In Stock)
Bodegas Roda Sela Rioja 2014 Bodegas Roda Sela Rioja 2014

From one of Rioja's great estates, a project dedicated to making "modern classics."  "Modern" here doesn't mean over-ripe fruit or heavy doses of sweet French oak.  Instead it means healthy, careful, farming, fermentation in open wood vats, and slow barrel aging in scrupulously clean condition. Sela is the estate's "young vine" wine (if 15-25 year-old vines are "young"!).  It's Tempranillo with splashes of Graciano and Garnacha aged in used French oak.  Lovely perfume and purity now and already gaining classic Rioja complexity and purity.  Brilliant with lamb!

"An easy to drink and fresh blend of 93% Tempranillo with 5% Graciano and 2% Garnacha. The key for 2014 was the selection of grapes (and the previous work in the vineyard, of course) because it was not easy: it was dry and warm but rained during the summer and the harvest, and there was some heat, which resulted in lots of botrytis. The wine fermented with indigenous yeasts in French oak vats, followed by one year in second and third use French barriques. They first produced this in 2008, as the vines they planted when the winery started were coming of age, and they used vines between 15 and 30 years of age. It's quite fruit forward, open and clean, with good ripeness and freshness, a success for the conditions of the harvest. The palate is fine and balanced, with a soft texture, fresh and accessible."Wine Advocate 91 points

Guillon Bourgogne Blanc Chardonnay 2016 Product #33192 (In Stock)
Guillon Bourgogne Blanc Chardonnay 2016 Guillon Bourgogne Blanc Chardonnay 2016

Best ever here. Soaring aromas of glorious ripe fruit – peach, apple, pear, clementine – plus notes of farm fresh butter and hazelnut.  All around the fruit, sweet and savory herb (mint, chervil), spice, a touch of vanilla bean and a hint of salinity that’s pretty surprising given the lovely ripeness.  While the fine ripe fruit flavors show up in the flavors, “ripe” is the last word you’d use to describe the texture.  This is simply the most pure, finessed and vibrant white Jean-Michel and Alexis Guillon have ever made.  Plenty of flavor intensity and depth here but a mouth feel that’s both creamy and laser-tight in focus as it glides across your palate.  The beautiful lemon, stone fruit, mint and cultured butter flavors shine in the middle but really pop on a fantastic, creamy and round, finish that lingers on and on.

The 100% new oak did its job in adding aromatic complexity, polish and finesse and then receded completely into the wine, leaving a stunningly pure, refined, wine for you to enjoy now and years to come. Just 100 cases made and 50 imported.

Dom Bernard Fleuriet Sancerre Cote De Marloup 2014 Product #33248 (In Stock)
Dom Bernard Fleuriet Sancerre Cote De Marloup 2014 Dom Bernard Fleuriet Sancerre Cote De Marloup 2014

We love the wines from Fleuriet's second winery, Renaissance, but the wines they make at their home estate, Dom Benoit et Mathieu Fleuriet, are certainly breathtaking as well. In this wine from silex, Kimmeridgian limestone, and white chalk soils, Bernard takes a different approach.  No oak here, but an amazing complexity and texture from fermentation and aging in concrete egg.

You'll spend a lot of time just sniffing here, enjoying the kaleidoscope of lemon pith, mango, green pineapple, passion fruit and bold white truffle aromas.  Every dip into the glass delivers something new, as does every sip.  Vivid and complex on the palate, the flavors of white citrus, lemon/lime pith, delicate truffle, slate and smoky "gun flint" ride a texture at once round and brilliantly precise.  And the finish is simply huge, and long, and captivating.  Sancerre for rich cheeses, lobster, buttered mushrooms and more.

En Numeros Vermells Garnatxa Blanca 2017 Product #33305 (In Stock)
En Numeros Vermells Garnatxa Blanca 2017 En Numeros Vermells Garnatxa Blanca 2017

1701 bottles made; 900 imported.  Every time I taste Silvia Puig’s Garnatxa Blanca, I think the same thing: this simply must be the finest 100% white Grenache made in the world.  Like the 2016 edition, this wine comes from very low-yielding old vines fermented in open top French oak casks and then brought together in tank to meld and mature.

The 2017 is all about the interplay between richness/concentration and purity/vivacity.  The aromas and flavors of white peach, green pear, juicy pineapple, just-picked tangerine, fresh fennel frond and sliced almond soar from the glass and coat your mouth with deep intensity.  A prickle of refreshing acidity on the entry and mouthwatering zest on the finish keep things fresh and building notes of dusty slate minerality lift things into another dimension.  Easy to drink right now, for sure, but this has much more capacity to develop layered complexity with time than you’d expect.  Bravo!

Guillon Bourgogne Rouge Les Graviers 2016 Product #33193 (In Stock)
Guillon Bourgogne Rouge Les Graviers 2016 Guillon Bourgogne Rouge Les Graviers 2016

As always, this is more than a Bourgogne rouge that happens to be from a vineyard just outside Chambolle-Musigny.  And, in 2016, it’s what you’d hope for in Village Chambolle at 1.5 to 2x the price.  Intense, deep and complex aromas of dark raspberry and tart cherry fruit with savory notes of black tea, dark chocolate, roasted coffee, purple flowers, campfire smoke and savory spice – all reflecting intensely ripe fruit, partial whole-cluster fermentation, a long maceration, and 100% new oak for aging.

On the palate, sweet/tart red cherry and berry fruit is accented by notes of Lapsang Souchong tea, chocolate, coffee sweet and savory spice, and hints of ferric mineral.  The texture is focused and pure as is the long finish where the cherry and raspberry liquor fruit rises up and pulses over the deep mineral, smoke, floral and spice flavors that linger.  The use of wood here is astonishingly deft, shaping and enriching and adding complexity to the ripe Chambolle Pinot Noir and then melting into the wine to let site and fruit shine through.

Dom Bernard Fleuriet Sancerre Rouge Anthocyanes 2015 Product #33249 (In Stock)
Dom Bernard Fleuriet Sancerre Rouge Anthocyanes 2015 Dom Bernard Fleuriet Sancerre Rouge Anthocyanes 2015

Forget light, quaffable, simply fruity Sancerre Rouge. This is majestic, old-vine, Pinot Noir that reminds you that Sancerre was almost entirely planted to red grapes until phylloxera wiped them out and vineyards were planted to easier-to-grow Sauvignon Blanc.  As importer Olivier Daubresse says, Bernard Fleuriet reminds us of Burgundy's Jean-Michel Guillon in work ethic, commitment to excellence, and passion for impeccable winemaking.  Here beautifully ripe and concentrated Pinot Noir spends a full 25 days in vat (vs 5-8 days for most Sancerre Rouge) before aging 14 months in highest quality, 50% new, French oak (from a cooper favored by Guillon).  Serious and seriously delicious.

"Old-vine Pinot Noir has produced a rich structured wood-aged wine. With its opulent texture and ripe full-bodied cherries and red plums, the wine is poised and generous. Drink this impressive wine from 2018."Wine Enthusiast 94 points

A huge increase in production in this, the second vintage of dry PX from Silvia – a whopping 789 bottles made and 300 imported!  The wine now carries the name Blanca del Carlos, honoring Silvia’s long-time mentor and companion in the vineyards.  The ripe fruit is fermented in open top barrels and then has the lids placed back on to age for 4 months on the lees.

The result is even richer, fresher and wilder than the inaugural 2016 edition.  Fantastic aromas of exotic flowers, white peach, grainy pear, fennel frond and lemon verbena with similar flavors that almost quiver and vibrate with energy in the mouth.  Plenty of depth and intensity here leading to a long, supremely fresh, finish of pear, peach, crunchy fennel, lemon and more lingering on and on.  A stellar match for sushi, shrimp salad, cold scallops, or summer nights.

As Vinous said of the 93 point 2014 edition, "I'd love to see this complex Chardonnay, blind, in a white Burgundy lineup." It's the estate's 390 case "Reserve" white, made from top barrels of Freedom Hill, X Novo, Sojourner and Vojtilla Vineyard fruit. It opens with lovely aromas of nectarine, peach, white flowers and a touch of hazelnut. Flavors of stone fruit, toasted nut, mint, pear and citrus flow across a perfectly balanced palate and drive to a long, mouthwatering, lightly mineral finish.  Lovely stuff to enjoy through 2026.

Winemaker Ken Pahlow knows Freedom Hill - he worked with fruit from this legendary vineyard for 10 years at St. Innocent. And he's 225 cases of classic Freedom Hill in 2016 using 15% whole clusters and 35% new oak.  As always, this serves up dark, almost brooding, aromas of black fruit, smoke, and savory spice.  On the palate it's rich and deep and powerful, but not at all heavy at 13.8% abv.  Intense blackberry, raspberry, and spice flavors gain complexity from accents of dark flowers and a touch of sappy herb.  Finishes broad and firm with silky tannins and lingering flavors of dark fruit, cherry pit and spice. Delicious already and built to improve for a decade plus, this is a gem.

Walter Scott Pinot Noir Sojourner 2016 Product #33355 (In Stock)
Walter Scott Pinot Noir Sojourner 2016 Walter Scott Pinot Noir Sojourner 2016

Ken and Erica made just 450 cases of this blend of Dijon 115, Pommard and Wadenswil clone Pinot from a rocky site at 650 feet elevation.  The aromas open clear and focused with lots of woodsmoke, dark raspberry/cherry fruit and a whiff of whole cluster spice.  The fresh, almost tangy, flavors ride along in a focused, very energetic, palate that shows a deft touch of grainy structure at the end.

With air, the wine unfurls in every way. The aromas and flavors get darker, deeper, and more intense with super-ripe raspberry and strawberry confit fruit, smoked slate, and fresh earth filling your mouth from side to side.  The texture moves from grainy silk to plush, cushy, velvet in the mid-palate with a note of iron ore and spice arriving with the firm, almost voluptuous tannins. As Erica writes, "Sojourner is a beautiful combination of finesse & power" to enjoy now - 2028.

1611 bottles made, 720 imported.  Intended to be the more open, ready to enjoy, of Silvia’s two “main” Priorats the 2016 is once again a blend of Garnatxa Negre, Garnatxa Peluda (aka “Hairy Grenache”) and Carinyena from old vineyards scattered across Priorat.  She ferments the wine in 300 and 500 liter French oak casks that have had one of the ends removed, and then puts the ends back on to let the wine age for 13 months.

The 2016 retains all the ripeness and fleshy depth of the 2015 but adds in the elegance and purity of the 2014.  You’ll love how bold, fruit-filled and deeply rich it is while marveling at the purity, balance and grace.  Aromas of fractured slate, juicy blackberry, dark plum, crushed coffee bean and sweet spice lead to dark flavors of black raspberry, wild blueberry, cocoa powder, licorice and a generous dusting of Priorat’s classic crushed slate.  As Jonas says, this is a powerful, concentrated, wine with an elegant touch.  Delicious with a decant today and best from 2022.

Walter Scott Pinot Noir Seven Springs 2016 Product #33354 (In Stock)
Walter Scott Pinot Noir Seven Springs 2016 Walter Scott Pinot Noir Seven Springs 2016

Not surprisingly, a great winemaker working with fruit from arguably the finest Pinot Noir vineyard in the USA turned out a brilliant wine in 2016!  This is from the rockiest part of Seven Springs, a block planted to mixed clones in 2007 and includes 20% whole clusters and 35% new oak. There's plenty of dark black raspberry, soft strawberry and tangy cranberry fruit on the nose, but the sappy notes of sandalwood, tobacco, and oolong tea make this about so much more than just fruit.

On the palate, this is the wildest, most savory, expression of this legendary vineyard I ever recall tasting.  Cured and green tobacco, black and smoked tea, porcini mushroom, and exotic spice flavors surround a deep core of strawberry, cherry and red plum fruit.  A squirt of fresh cranberry gives support to the complex, layered, flavors and pushes through a long finish riding over smooth as silk tannins.  A wine you can appreciate when you just pop the cork and pour a glass...but give this an hour in decanter (or, better, 3-5 years in your cellar) and you'll really be able to appreciate what supremely talented winemaking does with fruit from a world class vineyard.

Zeitgeist Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley 2015 Product #33339 (In Stock)
Zeitgeist Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley 2015 Zeitgeist Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley 2015

The husband-and-wife team of Mark Porembski and Jennifer Williams crafted their 400 case 2015 Cabernet from three outstanding Napa Valley vineyards.  Sleeping Lady in Yountville – the source of their 99 point flagship wine – gives deep fruit and classic structure.  St. Helena's Lewelling Ranch, continuously farmed since 1864, add richness and flesh and a connection to Napa history. And Farella Vineyard in Coombesville gives a welcome since of freshness and drive.

The result is the most complete Zeitgeist Napa Cabernet we’ve tasted to date.  There’s the plush plumpness of 2012, the fine and cellar-worthy power of 2013, and the silky purity of 2014, all rolled up into one.  A brief decant is all it needs to delight right now, although feel free to lay this down for 15+ years if that’s your thing.

“There’s 400 cases of the 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon and it’s a blend of 95% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Petit Verdot, from the Farella, Lewelling, and Sleeping Lady Vineyard, that was brought up in 70% new French oak. It’s another concentrated, ripe, sexy 2015 that has classic notes of cassis, blackberry jam, crushed rocks and leather. With terrific balance and building tannin, it’s a classic Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon that will benefit from 3-4 years of bottle age and keep for 15-20 years.”  Jeb Dunnuck 94+ points
