Guillon Gevrey-Chambertin Pere Galland 2013 Product #30034 (In Stock)
Guillon Gevrey-Chambertin Pere Galland 2013 Guillon Gevrey-Chambertin Pere Galland 2013

Jean Michel makes several different Gevrey village cuvves, but this one – named for the man who helped Jean Michel learn to make wine – really shines in 2013.  It’s more plush and fruit-driven than in some vintages with a richness to the texture and finish that will delight right now with food.  Still, lacking nothing in terms of potential for cellaring.

"Outstanding Top Value! Soft but not invisible wood and menthol nuances intertwine with the very ripe essence of black currant, cassis and warm earth nuances. Consistent with the nose, the succulent and seductively textured flavors are notably ripe and blessed with an impressive amount of dry extract that push the moderately firm tannic spine to the background on the ever-so-mildly rustic finish. This is really more Vosne than Gevrey in style but it does deliver very fine quality." Allen Meadows 89-91 points

Girardin Meursault Narvaux 2013 Product #30058 (In Stock)
Girardin Meursault Narvaux 2013 Girardin Meursault Narvaux 2013

The 55 year-old vines grow in Meursault's important Les Narvaux vineyard, just above the excellent 1er Cru Genevieres and to the North of Les Perrieres.  Clay/limestone soils typical of Merusault have just a touch more chalk here, giving good ripeness and plenty of minerality.  Aging for 16 months in 15% new French oak allows the wine to open wonderfully.  I love the interplay of rich lemon cream and pear fruit and the complex accents of mint, spice, and chalk.  Not sure why Burghound thinks you need to wait – impressive right now!

“Candied lemon, clove and wild herbs on the nose. On the lean side, with penetrating acidity giving a distinctly dry character to the flavors of spiced apple, citrus peel, minerals and mint. No hail damage here, according to enologist Germain.”  Vinous (Tanzer) 87-90 points

“An expressive nose featuring airy and notably cool notes of citrus, pear and floral scents introduces nicely intense middle weight flavors that exude a lovely minerality on the punchy finale that exhibits plenty of citrus character. This is a fine Meursault villages that will need a few years to unwind and harmonize but it should be at least very good.”Allen Meadows 88-91 points

Guillon Gevrey-Chambertin Vielles Vignes 2013 Product #30035 (In Stock)
Guillon Gevrey-Chambertin Vielles Vignes 2013 Guillon Gevrey-Chambertin Vielles Vignes 2013

Always one of Jean-Michel’s – and importer Olivier Daubresse’s! – favorite cuvees, I really cannot imagine how you wouldn’t guess very good 1er cru when tasting this blind.  It’s a powerful wine that can be enjoyed young for the rich, almost dense, fruit and will add complex earthy/iron ore notes as it matures.  Drink young with air and food or enjoy from 2023-2033 to see all this has to offer.  Perhaps the most outstanding value of this offering.

"Outstanding Top Value. In contrast to the Cuvée Galland this displays buckets of classic Gevrey character with its beautifully complex aromas of game, underbrush, pungent earth and that telltale sauvage quality on the assorted dark berry fruit scents. There is excellent volume and mid-palate concentration to the middle weight plus flavors that possess equally good complexity on the extract-rich, powerful and beautifully well-balanced finish. This is an old school Gevrey villages that will require plenty of patience but if you have it then this is a terrific choice. Highly recommended for the patient." Allen Meadows 89-92 points

En Numeros Vermells Classic Priorat Negre 2013 Product #29835 (In Stock)
En Numeros Vermells Classic Priorat Negre 2013 En Numeros Vermells Classic Priorat Negre 2013

715 bottles made, 384 imported.  As in 2011 and 2012, Silvia’s “Classic” Priorat is, well, “Classic.”  A blend of 65% Garnatxa, 30% Syrah, and 5% Carinyena fermented in open-top 300 liter and 500 liter French oak and then aged 13 months in those same barrels (with the tops back on).  It’s very young now and still a little shy on the nose and compacted on the palate, although the intensity, balance, and velvety texture are all easy to appreciate now.  My note from first tasting with Jonas:

“Dark and spicy fruit, long and rich, amazing power and then amazing finesse.  A “wow wine” with loads of dark, rich, fruit, powerful tannins, and a generous helping of Priorat graphite and slate.  Shockingly supple and sophisticated for its size.  What terrior (sense of place) is.  All in balance.”  Give this 2 or 3 years and enjoy for 20.

Bollinger Brut Champagne La Grand Annee 2005 Product #30056 (In Stock)
Bollinger Brut Champagne La Grand Annee 2005 Bollinger Brut Champagne La Grand Annee 2005

More powerful, complex, and intense than Special Cuvee, Bollinger’s 2005 vintage Champagne is showy now and built to improve further with time.  It’s 70% Pinot Noir and 30% Chardonnay from 13 different Cru vineyards, about 95% Grands Cru and the rest Premier.  All of the base wines aged for about a year in barrel – high quality, used, barrels constructed at Bollinger’s own in-house cooperage – and then resting about 6 years on the lees of secondary fermentation.  Plenty of power here, but also sophistication and grace to the complex notes of honey, ginger, hazelnut, and dried fruit aromas and flavors.

"Very subtle, complete nose. Hedgerows and lift. Substantial wine that is not as tight-knit as some but is certainly attention grabbing. Drink now-2028" Jancis Robinson 17/20 points

"A powerful, structured and graceful 2005, showing deft integration of the rich, chalky underpinning, firm acidity and expansive flavors of crushed black currant, spring blossom, toasted almond, crystallized honey and preserved lemon. Offers a fine, raw silk—like mousse and a long, spiced finish. Disgorged February 2015. Drink now through 2030."Wine Spectator 94 points

Girardin Corton Charlemagne Grand Cru 2013 Product #30061 (In Stock)
Girardin Corton Charlemagne Grand Cru 2013 Girardin Corton Charlemagne Grand Cru 2013

A grand wine from south and southeast-facing plots the heart of this famous Chardonnay Grand Cru.  Fermentation and 18 months aging takes place in the finest quality French oak barrique, with 30% new oak used to give the wine extra definition, texture, and complexity.  Worth decanting if you’d like to try it soon and pairing with something rich like lobster or chicken in chanterelle sauce.  Better still, leave it alone until 2020 and enjoy for many, many, years after that!

“This wine includes the fruit that normally goes into the Quintessence bottling as the crop was cut by 60% to 80% by hail.  A bit less pristine on the nose than the Chevalier-Montrachet, offering scents of lemon drop and peach syrup. Plush, sweet, thick and very concentrated, with a powerful rocky character currently dominating the middle palate. The stony quality carries through to the thick finish, which is slightly bitter but not austere or vegetal.”  Vinous (Tanzer) 92 points

“Reduction flattens the underlying fruit but there is fine freshness, intensity and detail to the muscular and concentrated big-bodied flavors that possess excellent depth on the stony, lingering and austere finish that is dry but not hard to aggressive. This will definitely require a few years of bottle age to become more civilized as it's quite firm today.”Allen Meadows 91-93 points

Guillon Gevrey Chambertin 1er Cru Champonnets 2013 Magnum Product #30038 (In Stock)
Guillon Gevrey Chambertin 1er Cru Champonnets 2013 Magnum Guillon Gevrey Chambertin 1er Cru Champonnets 2013 Magnum

Hoo boy!  As Burghound notes, this will need another 6 or 7 years to “arrive at its full potential,” but it’s nearly impossible to resist right now.  A big "wow" wine that delivers a silky, plush, nose of spice, rich fruit, fresh earth and cocoa.  Then a mouthful of dark fruit, unctuous cocoa butter, spice and cigar tobacco with superb length, plenty of power, but absolutely no excess weight.  This is arguably the wine that most clearly exemplifies Jean Michel’s style and talent and I cannot recommend it highly enough.

"Outstanding. This is one of the ripest wines in the range as the mocha-scented nose displays notes of cassis and black raspberry liqueur notes along with spice, earth and floral wisps. There is good minerality and plenty of earth and sauvage characters on the intense and punch medium-bodied flavors that culminate in a clean and dry (in the best sense) finale that is notably austere at present. I like the depth and balance though note that this muscular effort will definitely require extended cellaring to arrive at its full potential."Allen Meadows 90-93 points

Spottswoode Cabernet Sauvignon Napa 2012 Product #30054 (In Stock)
Spottswoode Cabernet Sauvignon Napa 2012 Spottswoode Cabernet Sauvignon Napa 2012

I’ve sampled this twice now – once pre-release at the winery in late 2014 and again with Lindy Novak here at the store in June – and it’s nothing short of breathtaking.  Parker has compared Spottswoode with Margaux in the past and with Pauillac for this release, and there is definitely something Bordeaux-like here.  But the intensity of fruit and supple, rich, tannins are distinctly Napa.

"Incredible blueberries, blackberries, black walnuts, minerals, black licorice and flowers. Full-bodied, very tight and structured with hints of hazlenuts, fine chocolate and hints of minerals and spices. A solid and classic-styled Napa Valley cab. Layered and very fine."  James Suckling 98 points

"The opaque purple-hued 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon exhibits a glorious bouquet of crème de cassis, spring flowers, a Pauillac-like lead pencil note, and background new oak. The overall impression is one of restraint combined with richness. This full-bodied effort possesses good acidity and ripe tannin. It has been crafted for the long-term. The hallmarks of great Spottswoode wines are their purity and elegance combined with serious power. The 2012 has that in abundance. This youthful, reserved Cabernet will benefit from 3-5 years of cellaring, and will keep for two decades or more."Wine Advocate 96+ points
