Montebuena Rioja Cuvee KPF 2015 Product #32442 (In Stock)
Montebuena Rioja Cuvee KPF 2015 Montebuena Rioja Cuvee KPF 2015

FALL FESTIVAL MIX/MATCH 2CS $6.98/EA

The big 90 point rating from Vinous is the kind of praise you expect to find for a $15-$20 Rioja, which makes the everyday $11.99 price a pleasing surprise (and this week’s super $6.98 two-case deal a stunner).  But that’s the kind of value that Wine Enthusiast Importer and Master Sommelier Fran Kysela delivers on a daily basis.  Here, Fran works with Rioja’s Unión de Cosecheros of Labastida to select his own favorite batches – Cuvee KPF – just for the US market.  Unlike some other importers, Fran isn’t trying to create a super-charged, over-ripe, parody of Spanish wine built just to pick up critical points.  Instead, he’s delivered us a very fine, classically-styled, Rioja of nice restraint now and plenty of short-term cellar potential.  As IWC said of a previous release, “it's an excellent value for Rioja.”  Especially at these remarkable savings prices!

“Aged for three months in used American oak barrels. Vivid ruby. Bright, sharply focused aromas of fresh red fruits and flowers, along with a spicy overtone and a hint of vanilla. Lithe and appealingly sweet on the palate, offering vibrant, oak-spiced raspberry and cherry flavors and a subtle rose pastille nuance. Finishes supple and long, displaying silky, slow-building tannins and resonating spiciness.”  Vinous (Raynolds) 90 points

Palacio De Bornos Verdejo Rueda 2016 Product #32441 (In Stock)
Palacio De Bornos Verdejo Rueda 2016 Palacio De Bornos Verdejo Rueda 2016

FALL FESTIVAL MIX/MATCH 2CS $7.98/EA

Over the past decade in Spain, "Verdejo" has come to be synonymous with "clean, crisp, white wine."  Which is unexpected, since it's only been 20 years or so since the Sanz family launched this estate and led the transformation of Rueda from oxidized, sherry-like, wines to refreshing beauties like this one!

The newest release of this long-time customer and staff favorite is like a richer, less grapefruity, version of Sauvignon Blanc.  Here big aromas of tropical fruit, tangerine, lemongrass and lemon thyme lead to bold flavors of ripe citrus (tangerine, orange, lemon) with a touch of anise and fresh cut grass for interest.  It's smooth and vibrant on the palate with excellent length and a mouthwatering finish that leaves citrus, green melon, and peach skin flavors lingering nicely.  A refreshing white to just sip and even better with Spanish tapas, sushi, or even spicy Cajun shrimp.  And, this weekend, a crazy bargain at these super savings!

Anton Bauer Rose Feuersbrunn 2016 Product #32331 (In Stock)
Anton Bauer Rose Feuersbrunn 2016 Anton Bauer Rose Feuersbrunn 2016

Two-time Austrian “Winemaker of the Year” Anton Bauer's Rosé Feuersbrunn (named for the Wagram town where it’s grown) has always been tasty but the 2016 edition reaches some very high heights indeed.  It looks even better with the pink label you’ll find here (vs. the black text on other export bottles), so we bought enough to get some labeled just for you and to bring the price down to rock-bottom levels, too!

Rosé Feuersbrunn 2016 starts with one of Austria’s own red grapes – Zweigelt – for bright fruit and then adds Austrian up-and-commers Merlot and Syrah for depth and complexity.  It’s a pretty, assertive, pink in the glass with bold aromas of ripe watermelon, fresh strawberry, summer flowers and just picked herb.  On the palate it’s broad and full of watermelon, strawberry and redcurrant fruit with lively accents of tangerine oil and lemon zest.  The flavors really fill your mouth with satisfaction before a lip-smacking, crisp, finish of cranberry, watermelon and herb pops and lingers on.  Definitely a delight right now, but hold onto a few bottles – it will be better still at Thanksgiving and next spring!

Chanson Pere Et Fils Vire Clesse 2015 Product #32296 (In Stock)
Chanson Pere Et Fils Vire Clesse 2015 Chanson Pere Et Fils Vire Clesse 2015

Good value in white Burgundy is all too hard to find these days, making this classy, stylish and very fresh Chardonnay from the Maconnaise AOC of Vire-Clesse very exciting indeed.  It's from what is arguably the best part of the Macon, a cooler site with more limestone and more than a little in common with the Cote d'Or to the north.  Chanson was among the very first to bottle AOC Vire-Clesse following its creation in 1988 and makes one of the most classic examples - ripe, rich, and dry.  In 2015 there's just a touch more depth, richness, and power than usual, making this a joy to sip and a stunning match with scallops or lobster.

"Very pure, this white delivers expressive aromas and flavors of peach, apple, spice and oyster shell. Lingers on the finish, with elements of spice and brown butter. Drink now through 2020."Wine Spectator 91 points

Kellerei Kaltern Caldaro Pinot Grigio Soll 2015 Product #32269 (In Stock)
Kellerei Kaltern Caldaro Pinot Grigio Soll 2015 Kellerei Kaltern Caldaro Pinot Grigio Soll 2015

The “big brother” to our best-selling Pinot Grigio of all time hails from a small vineyard small vineyard just north of the Alto Adige city of Bolzano.  Perched at 250-300 meters of elevation, it receives all of Alto Adige's bright summer sunshine but keeps cool thanks to constant breezes and cool evening air from the nearby Alpine and Dolomite mountains. A slow fermentation and aging of about 35% of the wine in large oak cask gives this more richness, power and complexity than the “regular” bottling, with no loss of refreshing crispness.  A great summer chill-out wine with the heft and body to enjoy on cool autumn and cold winter nights, too.

“Kaltern Caldaro offers an extensive line of value white wines that are truly spectacular. I am impressed by the Pinot Bianco, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Grigio and Kerner-based wines. I highly recommend these beautiful wines from the extremely balanced 2015 vintage. The Kaltern Caldaro 2015 Alto Adige Pinot Grigio Söll is a zesty and refreshing white wine that delivers a pristine and bright drinking experience. There is a touch of sassy spice on the close that follows fruity tones of peach, melon and citrus. The wine offers good dimension and depth.”Wine Advocate 90 points

Kellerei Kaltern Pinot Noir Saltner Alto Adige 2015 Product #32268 (In Stock)
Kellerei Kaltern Pinot Noir Saltner Alto Adige 2015 Kellerei Kaltern Pinot Noir Saltner Alto Adige 2015

We found lots to love when visiting the winery in Alto Adige, with this Pinot Noir one of the stars of the tasting.  It’s 100% Pinot grown mainly at about 400 meters altitude around Lake Kaltern and in nearby villages.  As the grapes come into the modern winery, they are destemmed, crushed, and allowed to ferment slowly in open wood vats before going into a mixture of large and small used French oak casks for 12 months off aging.

Words like “beautiful” and “lovely” keep coming to mind here.  The wine’s a stunning transparent garnet color in the glass and the aromas are redolent of just picked strawberry, right-off-the-tree red cherry, and mountain flowers with just a hint of wood spice and smoke.  The texture is silky and luscious, delivering mouthfilling flavors of strawberry pie and sweet cherry with accents of berry blossom, spice and smoke.  At just 13% alcohol, it’s certainly not heavy, but the flavors really coat your mouth with sweet richness before finishing crisp, clean, and fresh with a touch of spice and mouthwatering cranberry at the end.  With a light chill, this is the perfect summer red for salmon, salami, fried chicken (hot or cold!), or just toasting the sunset.

Jean Paul Thibert Pouilly Fuisse 2016 Product #32238 (In Stock)
Jean Paul Thibert Pouilly Fuisse 2016 Jean Paul Thibert Pouilly Fuisse 2016

Jean Paul Thibert's Jean Paul Thibert Macon Fuisse has been a store favorite for a few years now - but for the second vintage in a row his Pouilly Fuisse completely blows the doors off.   Our first thought on tasting this:  There's a lot of $40 Chassagne-Montrachet that's not nearly this good.

The wine greets you with gorgeous aromas of ripe orchard fruits - apple, peach, pear - with accents of lemon, hazelnut, fresh butter and white flowers.  Then this beauty delivers an absolutely classic white Burgundy palate of grilled pineapple, peach, pear, and lemon fruit with hazelnut, creme fraiche, and hints of salted caramel coming up as the wine warms.  The oak is well-integrated, the texture is rich and creamy and mouth-coating and the finish long and fresh, leaving hazelnut, mint, and tangerine flavors lingering. Real white Burgundy quality and satisfaction here at the price under most mid-range California Chardonnays (and, if you like Cali Chard, you’ll want to try this!)  “Burgundy” and “Bargain” don’t show up in the same sentence, or glass, often.  Don’t miss this one!

Casaloste Chianti Classico 2014 Product #32295 (In Stock)
Casaloste Chianti Classico 2014 Casaloste Chianti Classico 2014

Casaloste’s vineyards lie in the heart of the “Conca d’Oro” – the “Golden Shell” where you’ll also find growers like Fontodi, Castello dei Rampolla, and other of Chianti’s greats.  Proprietor and winemaker Giovanni d'Orsi's Chianti Classico is 90% Sangiovese and 10% Merlot, hand harvested at optimal ripeness, fermented in tank and then aged 12 months in large (500 liter) French oak cask.  An amazing wine for a "challenging" vintage, tt’s loaded with rich Chianti black cherry fruit with accents of violet, leather and chocolate.  There’s a depth and richness here that takes this to a higher level than the average Classico and fantastic mid-palate energy.  You’ll love it now -2024 with mushroom pasta and grilled beef.

"The 2014 Chianti Classico is bright, focused and impeccably balanced. Veins of acidity give the flavors striking nuance and energy. Sweet red plum, cherry, mocha and spice extend the finish in this gorgeous, super-expressive Chianti Classico from Casaloste. This is a terrific effort for the vintage."   Vinous (Galloni) 92 points

Voliero Rosso Di Montalcino 2015 Product #32382 (In Stock)
Voliero Rosso Di Montalcino 2015 Voliero Rosso Di Montalcino 2015

We sometimes think of Rosso di Montalcino as "baby Brunello," and some winemakers craft their Rosso in that style:  rich, dark, powerful and structured if just a touch less deep than Brunello.  But Andrea Cortonesi’s Voliero Rosso di Montalcino 2015 is something different.  It certainly captures the dark fruit and layered complexity of Sangiovese Grosso grown in the sandier soils of Montalino's norther vineyards.  But this is no "almost Brunello" - instead, it's a wine of unique purity, grace and even finesse that is uniquely Rosso.

It's also really, really, delicious!  Aromas of crushed berries, violets, spice and fresh leather all waft from the glass with the fruit getting darker and more prominent with air. In the mouth it glides across your palate with beautifully purity and deftness, layering fresh raspberry and cherry fruit with floral, spice and fresh earth accents. On the finish, the sweet fruit keeps on singing out over very fine, ripe, tannins and tangy cherry juice acidity.  Although the aromas and flavors are very Montalcino, the texture and freshness resemble a top Willamette Valley Pinot Noir, and this will work like that with salmon, grilled beef, and mushroom dishes.

Arterberry Maresh Pinot Noir Dundee Hills 2015 Product #32437 (In Stock)
Arterberry Maresh Pinot Noir Dundee Hills 2015 Arterberry Maresh Pinot Noir Dundee Hills 2015

Jim Maresh’s focus is on single vineyard Pinot Noir, so in most years, he sells off any barrels or lots that don’t make it into the final single vineyard cuvee.  In excellent years, though, that wine is just too good to part with, so he supplements it with fruit from neighbors and bottles this wine:  the Dundee Hills cuvee.  The 2014 was the first release of the Dundee Hills bottling in a few years.  It was a fine, 90-point, gem that Wine Advocate called “probably the bargain of the vintage."  The 2015 is better.

Oregon’s 2015 vintage looked and felt a lot like 2014 – warm weather, big harvest, bold fruit.  The difference is that the 2015s have better structure and style, both of which are on display here.  You’ll find ripe, dark red, fruit on the nose here with accents of blood orange and subtle smoke.  Wonderfully generous and vivid in the mouth, the dark cherry and plum fruit expands and coats your palate before savory notes of licorice and mushroom come in on the back.  The flavors linger nicely over fine, silky smooth, tannins that promise delight with food and 7-10 years improvement in cellar.  Terrific, delicious, stuff.

Accordini Amarone Classico Le Bessole 2011 Product #32373 (In Stock)
Accordini Amarone Classico Le Bessole 2011 Accordini Amarone Classico Le Bessole 2011

Accordini’s Amarone from the famous Cru (vineyard) of Le Bessole has all the heft and power you love in Amarone with just a touch of elegance and freshness from higher-altitude vineyards.  It’s got all the power and structure you’d expect from Amarone to go along with spicy dark fruits like dried cranberry, currants, cherries, and more.  But, instead of the plodding heaviness, prune-like flavors, and vinegar-like volatile acidity Amarone can fall prey to, this is fresh, clean, and very pure.  Spicy fruit, chocolaty richness, and an intense, spicy, and dry finish make this a great match for grilled pork tenderloin, baby back ribs, or even a well-marbled steak.  Compare it to wine costing $50-$75 or more – you’ll be convinced!  Just $26.38 when you buy two cases!

“Aromas of ripe raspberry jam, plum, menthol and baking spice lead the nose on this bold red. The dense palate delivers raisin, dried black cherry and licorice alongside assertive, close-grained tannins that grip the finish.” Wine Enthusiast 90 points

“An elegant red, with aromatic violet, citrus peel and spice notes leading to wild cherry and black raspberry fruit, layered with supple tannins and a note of fresh, loamy earth that lingers on the chewy finish. Drink now through 2026.” Wine Spectator 91 points

Dom Jean Royer Chateauneuf Du Pape Tradition 2015 Product #32231 (In Stock)
Dom Jean Royer Chateauneuf Du Pape Tradition 2015 Dom Jean Royer Chateauneuf Du Pape Tradition 2015

We love, love, LOVE, this wine – the rare Grenache-based blend that will satisfy the biggest Chateauneuf fan and folks who love fine Pinot Noir, too.  It’s hard to believe how much freshness and precision Jean-Marie captured here in a wine that still screams “Chateauneuf” in terms of heft and ripeness.  How did he get so much power AND silkiness in one wine?  Perhaps it’s the 5% Cinsault.  Jean-Marie think’s it’s the secret ingredient to this stunning wine, adding suppleness and freshness to the final blend.  I’m sure you can cellar this through 2025, but I’ve never had a case of this wine last more than 18 months in my cellar.  Sexy, pure, and pretty much irresistible.

"Deep red. A perfumed bouquet evokes fresh red berries, peppery spices and smoky minerals, plus a hint of lavender that builds in the glass. Vibrant raspberry and floral pastille flavors deepen and expand with air while maintaining vivacity. Silky tannins meld smoothly with the juicy fruit on the long, penetrating, racy finish, which repeats the floral note."  Vinous (Raynolds) 91-93 points

"Starting with the barrel sample and mostly Grenache, blended with 5% each of Cinsault and Syrah, the 2015 Châteauneuf du Pape should be a smoking value. Full-bodied, hedonistic and even voluptuous, this beauty gives up terrific notes of strawberries, kirsch, Provençal herbs and lots of sandy/loamy soils aromas and flavors. It should drink nicely right out of the gate, yet also evolve nicely."Wine Advocate 90-93 points

Dom Jean Royer Chateauneuf Du Pape Prestige 2015 Dom Jean Royer Chateauneuf Du Pape Prestige 2015

Jean-Marie’s old-vines cuvee is mainly (80%) Grenache from 100 year-old vines with a bold slug of Mourvedre for meaty complexity.  This is the best release of Prestige yet and one of the finest wines Jean-Marie Royer has ever made.  Imagine a thoroughbred racehorse, quivering to explode, being held back by a tight grip on the reins and you’ll get a sense for what’s going on here.  Astonishing precision and focus and restraint married to old-vine intensity to enjoy now with a decant or over the next 20 years.

“80% Grenache, 20% Mourvèdre. Partial whole-bunch fermentation in stainless steel and concrete tanks. Aged in demi-muids and in stainless-steel vats. Tasted blind. Mid garnet. Neat, well-integrated and balanced nose. Very sweet start and very nicely balanced. Sweet but not sickly Grenache that is fully ripe and well counterbalanced by fine tannins and just enough acidity.”  JancisRobinson.com 17.5/20 points

"Brilliant red. Expansive, mineral-tinged red berry, floral pastille and Asian spice aromas, along with hints of succulent herbs and incense. Appealingly sweet and seamless in texture, offering energetic raspberry, boysenberry and lavender pastille flavors that show outstanding clarity and lift. Fine-grained tannins provide frame and grip to the nervy, focused finish, which lingers with wonderful persistence and repeating florality. This remarkable wine should drink well through a long, steady aging curve thanks to its harmonious blend of fruit, acidity and tannins."  Vinous (Raynolds) 94-96 points

Albert Bichot Mercurey 1er Cru Champs Martin 2015 Product #32386 (In Stock)
Albert Bichot Mercurey 1er Cru Champs Martin 2015 Albert Bichot Mercurey 1er Cru Champs Martin 2015

In 2005, Alberic Bichot crated this estate (named after his young daughter) to symbolize the continued deep connection of the Bichot family with some of Burgundy's greatest vineyards. And in 2015, the 1er Cru parcel of Champs Martin delivered an exceptionaly great wine.  A good Mercurey has heft and depth; a great one adds finesse and purity. That's the lovely combination you'll find here in a wine you can enjoy tonight  or over the next 7+ years.

"This is at once riper but also more complex with good density to the red and dark currant, earth and violet aromas. The density continues on the delicious and caressing middle weight flavors that conclude in a lingering and balanced finish that is both youthfully austere and rustic."Allen Meadows 87-90 points

"The 2015 Mercurey 1Er Cru Champs-Martin, which as usual comes under the "Domaine Adélie" label, includes around 20% stem addition this year. It has an attractive bouquet with well-defined cranberry and raspberry preserve aromas, a hint of potpourri emerging with time in the glass. The palate is well balanced with sappy red and black fruit. There is a pleasant edginess here, sure a little rustic compared to others thanks to its broad-shouldered finish. However, there is charm and crispness, therefore I suspect it will drink well, especially with more hearty cuisine, over the next 4-7 years."Wine Advocate 87-89 points

Il Borro Toscana Rosso 2013 Product #32297 (In Stock)
Il Borro Toscana Rosso 2013 Il Borro Toscana Rosso 2013

Ferruccio Ferragamo is better known for running the family's high-fashion business, but he and his son, Salvatore, have spent the past 20 years building Tuscany's best, if still "under the radar," super-Tuscan operation about 60km south east of Florence.  This is their flagship wine, a powerful blend of  50% Merlot, 35% Cabernet, 10% Syrah and 5% Petit Verdot aged 18 months in new French oak.  Already exciting with a decant, this is a powerful super-Tuscan for rich foods and will shine brightest from 2019 - 2030.

"The 2013 Il Borro is a delicious wine that I have tasted several times over the past few months. It presents seamless aromatic integration with luscious dark fruit, proportioned doses of spice, tobacco and sweet blackberry flavors. This wine offers velvety softness and plumpness over a richly extracted mouthfeel and sweet oak tannins. The slightly cooler 2013 vintage reveals very long persistence with pretty nuances of moist earth, rum cake and cherry liqueur. This is a landmark wine from the Il Borro estate in Tuscany."Wine Advocate 95 points

Dom Jean Royer Chateauneuf Du Pape Sables De La Crau 2015 Dom Jean Royer Chateauneuf Du Pape Sables De La Crau 2015

From one of Chateauneuf’s greatest vineyards, La Crau (think Vieux Telegraphe) and a plot abutting Rayas.  All Grenache that showcases how sandy soils helps that heady varietal gain grace, focus, and precision.  In 2015 this is especially pretty, with layers of sweet Grenache fruit, crushed flowers, and spice.  Unusually open and ready to drink, this year’s Sables de la Crau will still improve substantially over the next 2-3 years and sing through 2030 easily.

"Vivid ruby-red. Intense, sharply focused red fruit liqueur, spicecake and floral scents are complicated by suggestions of smoky minerals and Asian spices. Sappy, penetrating and appealingly sweet, offering silky raspberry and lavender pastille flavors that put on weight and spread out steadily with air. Closes smooth, sweet and impressively long, displaying suave, fine-grained tannins and resonating florality."  Vinous (Raynolds) 92-94 points

"Floral and finesse-driven, the 2015 Châteauneuf du Pape Les Sables de La Crau is 100% Grenache from the sandy parts of the la Crau lieu-dit. It too is full-bodied, silky and polished, with terrific notes of strawberries, licorice, cherry jam and mint."Wine Advocate 91-93 points

Arterberry Maresh Pinot Noir Maresh Vyd 2015 Product #32438 (In Stock)
Arterberry Maresh Pinot Noir Maresh Vyd 2015 Arterberry Maresh Pinot Noir Maresh Vyd 2015

A great winemaker working with one of Oregon’s best vineyards, not surprisingly, turns out one of the Willamette Valley’s very best wines here year after year.  In the hot, dry, 2015 vintage sites like Maresh Vineyard really shine.  The volcanic Jory soils hold onto water just a bit better than finer sedimentary soils and the ultra old-vines – many dating to the early 1970s – have roots built to dig down and find it.  At 500 to 800 feet altitude and some cooling nighttime breezes, this is always one of the last sites in the Dundee Hills to ripen, giving the intense grapes even more time to develop flavor and character at modest alcohols.

What I love about this wine (pretty much year after year) is the blend of full ripeness and fine precision.  Big aromas of strawberry, super-ripe cherry, spiced plum and Dundee Hills’s classic smoky stone really bust from the glass.  Then, on the palate, a fascinating blend of 2015’s deep richness and Maresh Vineyard’s nervy, zesty, energy and class.  Sweet red fruit, blood orange, truffle, and warm stone flavors open with a point and then fan out to completely coat your mouth with flavor.  The finish is intense and long, with deep fruit, fresh acids, and floral and mineral notes sailing on over ripe, firm, tannins.  Better from 2020 and delicious through 2030 (at least).

Zeitgeist Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley 2014 Product #32359 (In Stock)
Zeitgeist Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley 2014 Zeitgeist Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley 2014

The husband-and-wife team of Mark Porembski and Jennifer Williams crafted their 342 case 2014 Cabernet from four outstanding Napa Valley vineyards.  Anomaly in St. Helena gives richness, Sleeping Lady in Yountville structure, Oakville Ranch power, and St. Helena's Lewelling Ranch, continuously farmed since 1864, a connection to Napa history. This is the richest, most deeply fruited and velvety textured Zeitgeist Cabernet yet – it will fill up your mouth and coat your palate with Napa’s best! – but no loss of the balance and poise that keeps this fresh and fascinating glass after glass.  A brief decant is all it needs to delight right now, although feel free to lay this down for 15+ years if that’s your thing.

“Zeitgeist is another winery where former Spottswoode winemaker Jennifer Williams runs the show along with owner Mark Porembski. Three brilliant Cabernet Sauvignons were tasted from the 2014 vintage. The 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon from four separate AVAs: Coombsville, St. Helena, Yountville and Oakville. There is plenty of crème de cassis fruit, an inky purple color, notes of charcoal, toast, blackcurrants, and spicy oak are present in this dense, full-bodied opulently concentrated wine. It is multi-layered, impressive and has the silky suppleness of the 2014 vintage as a hallmark. Drink it over the next 15-20+ years.” Wine Advocate 94 points

Caymus Cabernet Sauvignon Special Selection 2014 Product #32277 (In Stock)
Caymus Cabernet Sauvignon Special Selection 2014 Caymus Cabernet Sauvignon Special Selection 2014

Special Selection is just that – a special bottling made from the best barrels of Cabernet Sauvignon grown by the Wagner family each vintage.  And, in a vintage Robert Parker calls “the finest vintage I have experienced in tasting North Coast varietals over the last 37 years,” the “best barrels” are very fine indeed.  It’s always a big, rich, wine that pumps out oodles of dark currant, chocolate covered plum, mocha, sweet spice, and rich blackberry aromas and flavors.  In 2014, though, the size is matched by remarkable purity, balance and even finesse.

On first opening, the wine is dark, deep and intense, with a rich core of blackberry, black currant, and graphite accented by notes of fresh herb, mocha and Aisan spice. On the palate there's plenty of plushness and density to the dark fruit, cocoa, and spice flavors with a beam of graphite/lead pencil running from front to back.  Smooth as silk across your palate until a nicely grippy tannic spine emerges on the blue/black fruit and graphite finish.  With air, the wine broadens, deepens, and turns smooth as slik with a finish that just keeps sailing on and on. A great wine to enjoy now or cellar for 20+ years.
