Casa Santos Lima Confidencial Reserva 2014 Product #32573 (In Stock)
Casa Santos Lima Confidencial Reserva 2014 Casa Santos Lima Confidencial Reserva 2014

A staggering value!  Dark black raspberry, plum, purple flowers, cocoa powder and dusty mineral scents are just some of the aromas showing on the complex nose.  As in past releases, there's plenty of dark raspberry and blackberry fruit on the palate with dashes of licorice root, wild strawberry and mineral flavors in the mouth.  But the texture here is the best ever, poised and sleek at first before gaining amplitude and depth with air.  By all means enjoy it right now for the forward fruit and sophisticated mouth feel.  But stash some away for a few years and you'll be rewarded with even more intense flavors and breadth.

"One of the top wines from this producer, this blend of at least 10 grape varieties comes from its estate. The wood aging has added sophistication to this already concentrated wine. With black fruits to the fore and firm tannins, it will age well."Wine Enthusiast 92 points

Jean Paul Thibert Pouilly Fuisse 2016 Product #32238 (In Stock)
Jean Paul Thibert Pouilly Fuisse 2016 Jean Paul Thibert Pouilly Fuisse 2016

Jean Paul Thibert's Jean Paul Thibert Macon Fuisse has been a store favorite for a few years now - but for the second vintage in a row his Pouilly Fuisse completely blows the doors off.   Our first thought on tasting this:  There's a lot of $40 Chassagne-Montrachet that's not nearly this good.

The wine greets you with gorgeous aromas of ripe orchard fruits - apple, peach, pear - with accents of lemon, hazelnut, fresh butter and white flowers.  Then this beauty delivers an absolutely classic white Burgundy palate of grilled pineapple, peach, pear, and lemon fruit with hazelnut, creme fraiche, and hints of salted caramel coming up as the wine warms.  The oak is well-integrated, the texture is rich and creamy and mouth-coating and the finish long and fresh, leaving hazelnut, mint, and tangerine flavors lingering. Real white Burgundy quality and satisfaction here at the price under most mid-range California Chardonnays (and, if you like Cali Chard, you’ll want to try this!)  “Burgundy” and “Bargain” don’t show up in the same sentence, or glass, often.  Don’t miss this one!

Voliero Rosso Di Montalcino 2015 Product #32382 (In Stock)
Voliero Rosso Di Montalcino 2015 Voliero Rosso Di Montalcino 2015

We sometimes think of Rosso di Montalcino as "baby Brunello," and some winemakers craft their Rosso in that style:  rich, dark, powerful and structured if just a touch less deep than Brunello.  But Andrea Cortonesi’s Voliero Rosso di Montalcino 2015 is something different.  It certainly captures the dark fruit and layered complexity of Sangiovese Grosso grown in the sandier soils of Montalino's norther vineyards.  But this is no "almost Brunello" - instead, it's a wine of unique purity, grace and even finesse that is uniquely Rosso.

It's also really, really, delicious!  Aromas of crushed berries, violets, spice and fresh leather all waft from the glass with the fruit getting darker and more prominent with air. In the mouth it glides across your palate with beautifully purity and deftness, layering fresh raspberry and cherry fruit with floral, spice and fresh earth accents. On the finish, the sweet fruit keeps on singing out over very fine, ripe, tannins and tangy cherry juice acidity.  Although the aromas and flavors are very Montalcino, the texture and freshness resemble a top Willamette Valley Pinot Noir, and this will work like that with salmon, grilled beef, and mushroom dishes.

Abbazia Di Novacella Kerner Praepositus 2016 Product #32362 (In Stock)
Abbazia Di Novacella Kerner Praepositus 2016 Abbazia Di Novacella Kerner Praepositus 2016

The Kerner grape was created in 1929 as a cross between Riesling and Trollinger (Schiava) by a German researcher attempting to strengthen Riesling’s resistance to late spring frosts.  A bit of a failure in Germany, it reached Italy’s mountainous Alto Adige region in the 1970s to be planted in high-altitude sites where frost regularly damaged Sylvaner, Muller-Thurgau, and other white grapes.  Largely due to the success at this monastery with 850 years of winegrowing experience, Alto Adige Kerner earned its own DOC designation in 1993.

Kerner Praepositus is from fruit growing a nearly a half-mile altitude on 25-40% gradient sloped vineyards running up the western edge of the Dolomites.  In 2016, it’s even more stunning than the Wine Enthusiast 95 point 2015.  Bold and heady aromas of peach, orange zest, green apple, ginger, and smoked herb really burst from the glass.  On the palate, it starts broad and fleshy with deep apricot, citrus, and apple fruit with just a hint of raspberry framed by zingy notes of tangerine zest, ginger, and a hint of spearmint. Then, as the flavors completely fan out, WHAM comes a burst of crushed salty stone that propels the stone fruit, ginger and mint flavors through a long finish you'll still be tasting a minute or more later.  A beautiful wine to drink now – 2020 or so.

Arterberry Maresh Pinot Noir Dundee Hills 2015 Product #32437 (In Stock)
Arterberry Maresh Pinot Noir Dundee Hills 2015 Arterberry Maresh Pinot Noir Dundee Hills 2015

Jim Maresh’s focus is on single vineyard Pinot Noir, so in most years, he sells off any barrels or lots that don’t make it into the final single vineyard cuvee.  In excellent years, though, that wine is just too good to part with, so he supplements it with fruit from neighbors and bottles this wine:  the Dundee Hills cuvee.  The 2014 was the first release of the Dundee Hills bottling in a few years.  It was a fine, 90-point, gem that Wine Advocate called “probably the bargain of the vintage."  The 2015 is better.

Oregon’s 2015 vintage looked and felt a lot like 2014 – warm weather, big harvest, bold fruit.  The difference is that the 2015s have better structure and style, both of which are on display here.  You’ll find ripe, dark red, fruit on the nose here with accents of blood orange and subtle smoke.  Wonderfully generous and vivid in the mouth, the dark cherry and plum fruit expands and coats your palate before savory notes of licorice and mushroom come in on the back.  The flavors linger nicely over fine, silky smooth, tannins that promise delight with food and 7-10 years improvement in cellar.  Terrific, delicious, stuff.

"Highly perfumed red berry preserve, Asian spice and rose oil aromas are lent vivacity by a smoky mineral nuance. Silky, expansive raspberry, bitter cherry and spicecake flavors show very good energy and pick up a smoky flourish with aeration. Finishes juicy, gently sweet and quite long, featuring lingering red fruit flavors and discreet tannins."  Vinous (Raynolds) 91 points

Martin Ray Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve Napa 2014 Product #32543 (In Stock)
Martin Ray Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve Napa 2014 Martin Ray Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve Napa 2014

Think about what you’re hoping to get from $50 Napa Cabernet Sauvignon.  Bold aromas of blackcurrant, crushed blackberry, chocolate, and spice for sure.  Oodles of dark berry and currant fruit with bold accents of sweet spice, dark chocolate, and a bit of creamy mocha – that sounds good.  And a plush, velvety, texture that feel luxurious and rich and finishes smooth, lush and long with the tannins nicely cloaked in lingering black fruit and spice seals the deal.  You’ll find all that here in a wine that’s ready to drink right now with beef and lamb and will actually get better still over the next 5+ years.

It’s 100% Napa Cabernet Sauvignon, with most of the fruit coming from the red-hot Oak Knoll district in the southern part of Napa.  Cooling breezes from the bay helped moderate 2014’s warmth and lengthen hang time for the small, intense, berries.  A slow, two-week, fermentation with manual punch-downs followed by 15 months in 50% new French oak mellowed the powerful extraction and added lovely notes of spice and herb.  And somehow sliding in under the critics’ tasting agendas helps us keep the price of what really should be a $50 bottle to very user-friendly levels.  A delicious, extremely high-value, Napa Cab.

Accordini Amarone Classico Le Bessole 2011 Product #32373 (In Stock)
Accordini Amarone Classico Le Bessole 2011 Accordini Amarone Classico Le Bessole 2011

Accordini’s Amarone from the famous Cru (vineyard) of Le Bessole has all the heft and power you love in Amarone with just a touch of elegance and freshness from higher-altitude vineyards.  It’s got all the power and structure you’d expect from Amarone to go along with spicy dark fruits like dried cranberry, currants, cherries, and more.  But, instead of the plodding heaviness, prune-like flavors, and vinegar-like volatile acidity Amarone can fall prey to, this is fresh, clean, and very pure.  Spicy fruit, chocolaty richness, and an intense, spicy, and dry finish make this a great match for grilled pork tenderloin, baby back ribs, or even a well-marbled steak.  Compare it to wine costing $50-$75 or more – you’ll be convinced!

“Aromas of ripe raspberry jam, plum, menthol and baking spice lead the nose on this bold red. The dense palate delivers raisin, dried black cherry and licorice alongside assertive, close-grained tannins that grip the finish.” Wine Enthusiast 90 points

“An elegant red, with aromatic violet, citrus peel and spice notes leading to wild cherry and black raspberry fruit, layered with supple tannins and a note of fresh, loamy earth that lingers on the chewy finish. Drink now through 2026.” Wine Spectator 91 points

Albert Bichot Mercurey 1er Cru Champs Martin 2015 Product #32386 (In Stock)
Albert Bichot Mercurey 1er Cru Champs Martin 2015 Albert Bichot Mercurey 1er Cru Champs Martin 2015

In 2005, Alberic Bichot crated this estate (named after his young daughter) to symbolize the continued deep connection of the Bichot family with some of Burgundy's greatest vineyards. And in 2015, the 1er Cru parcel of Champs Martin delivered an exceptionaly great wine.  A good Mercurey has heft and depth; a great one adds finesse and purity. That's the lovely combination you'll find here in a wine you can enjoy tonight  or over the next 7+ years.

"This is at once riper but also more complex with good density to the red and dark currant, earth and violet aromas. The density continues on the delicious and caressing middle weight flavors that conclude in a lingering and balanced finish that is both youthfully austere and rustic."Allen Meadows 87-90 points

"The 2015 Mercurey 1Er Cru Champs-Martin, which as usual comes under the "Domaine Adélie" label, includes around 20% stem addition this year. It has an attractive bouquet with well-defined cranberry and raspberry preserve aromas, a hint of potpourri emerging with time in the glass. The palate is well balanced with sappy red and black fruit. There is a pleasant edginess here, sure a little rustic compared to others thanks to its broad-shouldered finish. However, there is charm and crispness, therefore I suspect it will drink well, especially with more hearty cuisine, over the next 4-7 years."Wine Advocate 87-89 points

Dom Michelot Meursault Narvaux 2015 Product #32585 (In Stock)
Dom Michelot Meursault Narvaux 2015 Dom Michelot Meursault Narvaux 2015

Tasting with Nicolas Mestre at the Domaine in March, we were impressed with the straight village-level Meursault. Wine Spectator was, too, awarding it a fine 90 point rating. But one taste of the 2015 Les Narvaux (which Wine Spectator didn't try), and we immediately knew it was more than worth the few extra dollars!

Les Narvaux is the best of Meursault's "lieu-dit" vineyards, kind of a halfway step from "village" to 1er Cru. Perched on rocky soils high on the hill above 1er Cru Les Genevrieres, Narvaux gives classic Meursault richness without heaviness and good energy with no hard edges. Michelot's is about as fine as Narvaux gets. In 2015, it's opulent and rich but retains the kind of tight focus and minerality that makes white Burgundy so exciting. Subtle lemon, orchard, hazelnut and fresh butter scents invite you in. Then BIG flavors of stone fruit, citrus, toasted nut and tangy butter fill your mouth, staying tangy and lithe for all the depth and richness. Meursault's classic minerality wells up nicely on the butter, hazelnut and mint-laced finish that seems to never end. A delicious white Burgundy that perfectly balances the richness of the year with the energy, cut and minerality that make white Burgundy...well, Burgundy!

Ken Wright Pinot Noir Abbott Claim Vyd 2016 Product #32471 (In Stock)
Ken Wright Pinot Noir Abbott Claim Vyd 2016 Ken Wright Pinot Noir Abbott Claim Vyd 2016

A vineyard that I’ve underestimated in the past but that has given Ken some his most exciting wines over the past few vintages.  Ken owns and farms this marine sedimentary site with loving care.  It’s not far from Savoya and Shea, but it often packs in even more power and punch than its more famous neighbors.  The vineyard is planted to a mixture of Pommard and Dijon clone that push through about 30 inches of sedimentary soils before hitting mother rock of fractured sandstone and siltstone.  Both the clones and the soils incline Abbott Claim towards a distinctive spice and floral focus, although there’s always plenty of rich plum, cassis and black cherry fruit.

Ken Wright Pinot Noir Shea Vyd 2016 Product #32473 (In Stock)
Ken Wright Pinot Noir Shea Vyd 2016 Ken Wright Pinot Noir Shea Vyd 2016

Ken’s signature wine and, arguably, Willamette Valley’s signature vineyard.  Wine Advocate has suggested that Shea is the Willamette Valley’s one potential “superstar” vineyard and Ken makes the benchmark wine from this famous site.  Ken uses fruit from three different blocks in the vineyard, two planted to Dijon 114 and one to Dijon 777 clones. Shea always gives black/red fruit - especially blueberry - but with more spice and earth than other Yamhill-Carlton wines.  Always a fine marriage of ripe fruit and juicy, fresh, texture, this usually wants a few years in cellar to show its best. Ken pretty much made the reputation of this vineyard, and it's always one of his most powerful, concentrated, wines.

Ken Wright Pinot Noir Freedom Hill Vyd 2016 Product #32474 (In Stock)
Ken Wright Pinot Noir Freedom Hill Vyd 2016 Ken Wright Pinot Noir Freedom Hill Vyd 2016

Always a favorite in Ken’s cellar, the Freedom Hills Pinot comes from a tiny slice (2.85 acres) of this well-respected vineyard lying between Eola Hills to the east and the Coastal Range to the west.  A tad warmer than vineyards in either neighboring region, but also possessed of unusually bright acidity that should sing through nicely in 2016.  Ken’s parcels were replanted about 10 years ago after phylloxera reached Freedom Hill, and now they give wine with a wonderful blend of richness and structure, accessibility and ability to age.  Lots of spice, chocolate, and herb notes to add complexity to the dark raspberry and plum.

Ken Wright Pinot Noir Bonnie Jean Vyd 2016 Ken Wright Pinot Noir Bonnie Jean Vyd 2016

Bonnie Jean sits adjacent to Abbott Claim, and is Ken's youngest vineyard - he planted it in 2010 and make his first wine here in the 2013 harvest.  The label commemorates the cherries that grew here and the bluebirds that still make the vineyard their home.  With Wellsdale soils and a South/Southeast orientation, it seems to want to make forward, fresh berry, wines with notes of red currant, spice and cola. Very pretty in 2016!

One of only two wines Ken makes from volcanic sites (Latchkey in the Dundee Hills is the other), this is always distinctive for its notes of bright cherry, blue/black berry, and juicy acids.   It’s a blend of 30+ year-old Pommard and slightly younger Dijon clone growing on very shallow, porous, soils.  Lots of fruit with complicating accents of tobacco, herb, and more.  A neat marriage of Eola Hill’s spice and freshness with volcanic sites’ classic red fruit.

Like Latchkey, Carter is a volcanic soil site and gives serves up a nice dose of smoky richness to go with the blackberry, blueberry, and black cherry fruit.  The lose basalt soils shown on the label force the vine roots to dig deep here and help Carter deliver health fruit in vintages wet and dry.  Like Latchkey, if you like a darker expression of Pinot, this is pretty compelling in that style.

As Ken says, Guadalupe Vineyard is technically a Dundee Hills site that "should be" in the Yamhill-Carlton AVA.  It marks the transition from Dundee's volcanic Jory soils to shallow Willakenzie sedimenatary soils over siltstone mother rock.  Often one of the most forward and early-drinkinng of Ken's wines, it tends to be dark in color and show black fruit, cocoa and earth aromas and flavors with a distinct "zing" of bright acids.

This is about the most densely-planted vineyard Ken works with (1x2 meters) on extremely well-drained Wellsdale sedimentary soils.  It's all Dijon clone Pinot today (about half was grafted over from Chardonnay in 2000).  Ken says it's mainly a black-fruited wine, powerful, dense, and built to age really well.  It's always high-toned, fresh, and vibrant with loads of strawberry and currant fruit and a compelling sense of minerality.  Not the richest wine Ken makes, but one of the most vivid.

Arterberry Maresh Pinot Noir Maresh Vyd 2015 Product #32438 (In Stock)
Arterberry Maresh Pinot Noir Maresh Vyd 2015 Arterberry Maresh Pinot Noir Maresh Vyd 2015

A great winemaker working with one of Oregon’s best vineyards, not surprisingly, turns out one of the Willamette Valley’s very best wines here year after year.  In the hot, dry, 2015 vintage sites like Maresh Vineyard really shine.  The volcanic Jory soils hold onto water just a bit better than finer sedimentary soils and the ultra old-vines – many dating to the early 1970s – have roots built to dig down and find it.  At 500 to 800 feet altitude and some cooling nighttime breezes, this is always one of the last sites in the Dundee Hills to ripen, giving the intense grapes even more time to develop flavor and character at modest alcohols.

What I love about this wine (pretty much year after year) is the blend of full ripeness and fine precision.  Big aromas of strawberry, super-ripe cherry, spiced plum and Dundee Hills’s classic smoky stone really bust from the glass.  Then, on the palate, a fascinating blend of 2015’s deep richness and Maresh Vineyard’s nervy, zesty, energy and class.  Sweet red fruit, blood orange, truffle, and warm stone flavors open with a point and then fan out to completely coat your mouth with flavor.  The finish is intense and long, with deep fruit, fresh acids, and floral and mineral notes sailing on over ripe, firm, tannins.  Better from 2020 and delicious through 2030 (at least).

"Vivid red. Sexy, high-pitched red berry, incense and candied rose scents are complemented by a smoky mineral aspect and a hint of star anise. Sappy and focused in the mouth, offering energetic raspberry liqueur, bitter cherry, blood orange and floral pastille flavors that put on weight and become sweeter with air. Conveys a suave blend of power and vivacity and closes on a subtly tannic note, displaying outstanding focus and floral-driven persistence." Vinous (Raynolds) 94 points

Guillon Gevrey-Chambertin Pere Galland 2015 Product #32512 (In Stock)
Guillon Gevrey-Chambertin Pere Galland 2015 Guillon Gevrey-Chambertin Pere Galland 2015

Jean Michel makes several different Gevrey village cuvves, but this one – named for Rene Galland, the man who helped him learn to make wine – shines especially brightly in 2015.  One swirl of the glass and you know you're about to drink a Domaine Guillon red Burgundy from a great vintage.  Smoke, earth, spice, and iron aromas envelop the dark and rich fruit.  Then, on the palate, there's the muscularity Gevrey is supposed to give with a level of concentration, class and drive that Village-level Gevrey almost never attains.  For all the ripeness of the raspberry and dark cherry fruit, this shows amazing finesse and purity through the long, spicy, finish.  Decant now, better from 2020, great through 2030 and beyond.

"A pungent nose displays notes of reduction and wood toast. By contrast there is fine freshness to the super-rich and highly seductive medium weight flavors that coat the mouth with dry extract on the balanced and notably more complex finale. This is a big villages that will need a few years of cellar time first."Allen Meadows 89-91 points

Guillon Morey Saint Denis 1er Cru La Riotte 2015 Guillon Morey Saint Denis 1er Cru La Riotte 2015

Always the easiest to taste young of Jean-Michel's 1er Crus, the 2015 Morey Saint Denis marries lovely depth and richness to, once again, a fanstically silky, pure, texture.  The 100% new oak Burghound comments on is already being absorbed into the wine with delights as much for it's velvety pure texture as it does for the profound fruit and sweet spice.  If you normally like this, buy it.  If you aren't already a fan, this will make you one.  Best from 2020 - 2035.

"Ample wood fights somewhat with the otherwise wonderfully fresh and bright red cherry, floral and softly earth-scented aromas. There is both good vibrancy and refinement to the lightly mineral-inflected middle weight flavors that possess a lovely mouth feel though the wood is very much present on the finish. The underlying material is probably sufficient to eat the wood and my predicted range assumes that it will."Allen Meadows 90-92 points
