Jean Vesselle Brut Oeil De Perdrix NV Product #13956 (In Stock)
Jean Vesselle Brut Oeil De Perdrix NV Jean Vesselle Brut Oeil De Perdrix NV

Dom Perignon - yes, he was a real winemaking monk! - pioneered the making of "white" Champagne from "black" Pinot Noir grapes in the 1600s.  The techniques were refined by the large houses in Champagne's northern regions, but somehow never reached the little town of Bouzy in the south.  When Fulgence Vesselle and his neighbors started making their own Champagne around 1900 (having sold their grapes before), they slightly over-pressed and ended up with a wine that was neither all white or full pink - in fact, the pale orange pink of a partridge’s eye or Oeil de Perdix.

The style faded from view around mid-century, but in 1972 Fulgence's grandson, Jean Vesselle, discovered a few bottles of the old wine hidden in a wall.  He was astounded by the color, freshness, and lovely aromas of this old-style wine and, beginning a few years later, launched his own interpretation of Oeil de Perdix.  It's 100% Pinot Noir pressed lightly pink and aged 3 years in bottle before release. History never tasted so good!

"The salmon-colored NV Brut Oeil de Perdrix is another utterly delicious Champagne from Vesselle. Dried rose petals, orange zest, white pepper and mint give much of its high-toned aromatics, but there is plenty of depth to the fruit as well. Deceptively medium in body, the Oeil de Perdrix possesses striking finesse and exceptional overall balance. Oeil de Perdrix is an old-fashioned style of Blanc de Noirs with just a touch of color from a very short period of skin contact at pressing. "  Vinous (Galloni) 93 points

Ken Wright Pinot Noir Carter Vyd 2015 Product #31315 (In Stock)
Ken Wright Pinot Noir Carter Vyd 2015 Ken Wright Pinot Noir Carter Vyd 2015

Like Latchkey, Carter is a volcanic soil site and gives serves up a nice dose of smoky richness to go with the blackberry, blueberry, and black cherry fruit.  The barrel sample I tasted in February was plump, soft, and rich with a nicely spicy finish.  The lose basalt soils shown on the label force the vine roots to dig deep here and help Carter deliver health fruit in vintages wet and dry.  Like Latchkey, if you like a darker expression of Pinot, this is pretty compelling in that style.

"Structured and mildly brooding, this offers floral blueberry and cherry aromas accented by polished plum, licorice and savory spice flavors that build toward refined tannins. Drink now through 2024."Wine Spectator 93 points

Guillon Grand Cru Mazis Chambertin 2013 Product #30041 (In Stock)
Guillon Grand Cru Mazis Chambertin 2013 Guillon Grand Cru Mazis Chambertin 2013

It’s hard to believe Jean-Michel could make such a powerful Mazis in 2013, but the proof is here in the bottle.  Buy as much as you can - it will show best after 2023 and give amazing pleasure for as long as you’d care to hold it.  A stunning, stunning, wine.

"A pungent nose of strong reduction and wood toast flatten the underlying fruit. This is also a big, powerful and intense effort with excellent mid-palate concentration and plenty of palate coating dry extract that also serves to buffer the extraordinarily firm finish that delivers superb length. Like several of these 2013s this is an old school style of Mazis and it is pointless to buy this unless you have the determination to allow it have at least 10 years of cellaring and it will need every bit of 20 to fully mature. As such this will not be for everyone but it will be a treat for those who have the resolve to wait."Allen Meadows 92-94 points

Guillon Gevrey Chambertin 1er Cru Petit Chapelle 2013 Magnum Product #30040 (In Stock)
Guillon Gevrey Chambertin 1er Cru Petit Chapelle 2013 Magnum Guillon Gevrey Chambertin 1er Cru Petit Chapelle 2013 Magnum

With the Gevrey Vieilles Vignes, this is one of the truly amazing values in this offering, delivering Grand Cru level ripeness, concentration, and complexity at a price well under many very good 1er Crus.  As with the Grand Crus, Jean-Michel ferments Petite Chapelle in a brand-new, open-top, wood fermenter before aging it in the best French oak money can buy.  You can begin to peak in on its development in 2020 if you like, but put some away to drink from 2023 to whenever.

"Sweet Spot Outstanding. Ample wood spice and menthol nuances add breadth to the beautifully complex and markedly ripe plum, cassis and black currant suffused nose. There is a beguiling sense of underlying tension to the precise and mineral-driven big-bodied flavors that possess both excellent volume and plenty of power, all wrapped in a firm, austere and overtly tannic finale. Like the old vines Gevrey this is an old school example and is best suited for those who have the patience to wait as this will definitely require it."Allen Meadows 91-93 points
