Paitin Barbaresco Serra 2012 Product #30172 (In Stock)
Paitin Barbaresco Serra 2012 Paitin Barbaresco Serra 2012

Paitin makes three different wines from their excellent Serraboella vineyard, with Serra coming from the “young” vines – although much of this stock is 15-20 years old.  “Vibrancy” is the key word here, with fresh aromas of red berry, ginger, nutmeg, and smoke and a zippy cherry/raspberry palate with accents of spice and herb.  Even since Galloni tasted this, it’s smoothed out and shows plenty of fruit and a silky texture.  The most immediately delicious of the three Barbaresco (although sure to improve).

"Paitin's 2012 Barbaresco Serra bursts from the glass with exuberant red fruit, flowers, spices and crushed rocks. There is no shortage of intensity, although the Serra comes across as a bit rough around the edges, especially next to the 2011. It will be interesting to see what the last bit of aging brings.  Drink 2016-2024"  Vinous (Galloni) 89-91 points

"A bright, juicy, red exhibiting cherry, raspberry, licorice, spice and floral flavors. Becomes more tannic, lingering on the moderately long finish. Decant now or cellar for two to three years. Best from 2018-2013."Wine Spectator 92 points

Belle Pente Pinot Noir Murto Vyd 2011 Product #30181 (In Stock)
Belle Pente Pinot Noir Murto Vyd 2011 Belle Pente Pinot Noir Murto Vyd 2011

Yes, you can certainly taste and enjoy Murto 2011 right now, but don't.  There is so much potential here still locked up in the bright,  minerally, structure that just won't unfurl and show itself until 2019 or so.  Already the bright red fruit, spice, and floral profile of a great Dundee Hills Pinot is easy to smell and taste.  And if, like me, you place a special priority on vibrancy, the sizzling cut and lift on display right now will make this hard to resist.  For those who wait, though, there will be richer, deeper, sweeter fruit to come along with plenty of earth and spice depth.  My personal favorite in a brilliant set of wines.

"Highly perfumed aromas of red fruit liqueur, Asian spices, rose oil and musky underbrush, with a subtle touch of smokiness in the background. Silky and penetrating on the palate, showing very good clarity to its spicy raspberry and bitter cherry flavors. The spiciness builds on the finish, which is firmed by silky, building tannins. Quite elegant in style and balanced to age, although it's already delicious."  Vinous (Reynolds) 92 points

Guillon Marsannay Clos Des Portes 2013 Product #30032 (In Stock)
Guillon Marsannay Clos Des Portes 2013 Guillon Marsannay Clos Des Portes 2013

A stunning bottle of handcrafted red Burgundy that will delight fans of ripe Russian River or warm vintage Willamette Valley Pinot today and satisfy the most demanding Burgundy fan for years to come.  Jean Michel Guillon purchased this small vineyard about 9 years ago and his hard work has transformed its 30-40 year-old vines into something very special indeed.  He harvests less than 30 hectoliters per hectare of perfectly ripe fruit here – much lower yields than are allowed in Grand Cru vineyards!  And, he treats it like “Grand Cru” wine, too, aging it for 16 months in all new Bertomieu French oak barrels.

Right now it serves up luscious aromas of red currant, cranberry, coffee and.  Beautiful sweet cherry, currant, and red berry fruit take center stage on the palate, with accents of smoke, coffee, and fresh flowers.  The fruit is so sweet and texture of the wine so silky smooth that you might miss the minerality and fine tannins that bode so well for future improvement.  A pretty cranberry note wells up on the velvety finish – and what could be better with Thanksgiving dinner than a touch of cranberry!  A beautiful wine to drink right now and sure to be better and better over the next decade.

"Moderate wood influence frames the fresh and ripe aromas of cassis, plum, earth and a hint of animale. The earth character continues onto the textured medium-bodied flavors that also display a touch of minerality on the solidly complex and persistent finish where the wood telegraphed by the nose reappears. This mildly oaky effort should also drink well young if desired."Allen Meadows 88-90 points

Jean Vesselle Brut Oeil De Perdrix NV Product #13956 (In Stock)
Jean Vesselle Brut Oeil De Perdrix NV Jean Vesselle Brut Oeil De Perdrix NV

Dom Perignon - yes, he was a real winemaking monk! - pioneered the making of "white" Champagne from "black" Pinot Noir grapes in the 1600s.  The techniques were refined by the large houses in Champagne's northern regions, but somehow never reached the little town of Bouzy in the south.  When Fulgence Vesselle and his neighbors started making their own Champagne around 1900 (having sold their grapes before), they slightly over-pressed and ended up with a wine that was neither all white or full pink - in fact, the pale orange pink of a partridge’s eye or Oeil de Perdix.

The style faded from view around mid-century, but in 1972 Fulgence's grandson, Jean Vesselle, discovered a few bottles of the old wine hidden in a wall.  He was astounded by the color, freshness, and lovely aromas of this old-style wine and, beginning a few years later, launched his own interpretation of Oeil de Perdix.  It's 100% Pinot Noir pressed lightly pink and aged 3 years in bottle before release. History never tasted so good!

"The salmon-colored NV Brut Oeil de Perdrix is another utterly delicious Champagne from Vesselle. Dried rose petals, orange zest, white pepper and mint give much of its high-toned aromatics, but there is plenty of depth to the fruit as well. Deceptively medium in body, the Oeil de Perdrix possesses striking finesse and exceptional overall balance. Oeil de Perdrix is an old-fashioned style of Blanc de Noirs with just a touch of color from a very short period of skin contact at pressing. "  Vinous (Galloni) 93 points

Ken Wright Pinot Noir Carter Vyd 2015 Product #31315 (In Stock)
Ken Wright Pinot Noir Carter Vyd 2015 Ken Wright Pinot Noir Carter Vyd 2015

Pre-Arrival:  Wine arrives late-October
For 2012 WE 94/WS 91

Like Latchkey, Carter is a volcanic soil site and gives serves up a nice dose of smoky richness to go with the blackberry, blueberry, and black cherry fruit.  The barrel sample I tasted in February was plump, soft, and rich with a nicely spicy finish.  The lose basalt soils shown on the label force the vine roots to dig deep here and help Carter deliver health fruit in vintages wet and dry.  Like Latchkey, if you like a darker expression of Pinot, this is pretty compelling in that style.

Dom Jean Royer Chateauneuf Du Pape Sables De La Crau 2013 Product #30205 (In Stock)
Dom Jean Royer Chateauneuf Du Pape Sables De La Crau 2013 Dom Jean Royer Chateauneuf Du Pape Sables De La Crau 2013

From one of Chateauneuf’s greatest vineyards, La Crau (think Vieux Telegraphe) and a plot abutting Rayas.  All Grenache that showcases how sandy soils helps that heady varietal gain grace, focus, and precision.  There must be a typo at Wine Advocate (91 points?  Really?), as this is already absolutely compelling and will gain explosiveness over the next couple of years.  Just 3 cases available.

"Sexy, mineral-tinged raspberry and floral pastille aromas show outstanding clarity and pick up a pungent suggestion of garrigue with air. Spicy, penetrating and energetic on the palate, offering juicy red berry, cherry liqueur and lavender flavors that deepen and spread out on the back half. The mineral and floral notes resonate emphatically on the persistent finish, which is firmed by sneaky, fine-grained tannins."  Vinous (Reynolds) 92-94 points

"The 2013 Châteauneuf du Pape les Sables de la Crau is a stunner in the vintage. Ultra-pure, elegant, sweetly fruited and a sexy as they come, it delivers loads of strawberry, rose petal, framboise and spice on the nose. My only complaint is that it’s slightly straightforward, but it delivers more pleasure than most in this vintage and just begs to be drunk! Enjoy this beauty anytime over the coming 7-8 years."Wine Advocate 91 points

Guillon Grand Cru Mazis Chambertin 2013 Product #30041 (In Stock)
Guillon Grand Cru Mazis Chambertin 2013 Guillon Grand Cru Mazis Chambertin 2013

It’s hard to believe Jean-Michel could make such a powerful Mazis in 2013, but the proof is here in the bottle.  Buy as much as you can - it will show best after 2023 and give amazing pleasure for as long as you’d care to hold it.  A stunning, stunning, wine.

"A pungent nose of strong reduction and wood toast flatten the underlying fruit. This is also a big, powerful and intense effort with excellent mid-palate concentration and plenty of palate coating dry extract that also serves to buffer the extraordinarily firm finish that delivers superb length. Like several of these 2013s this is an old school style of Mazis and it is pointless to buy this unless you have the determination to allow it have at least 10 years of cellaring and it will need every bit of 20 to fully mature. As such this will not be for everyone but it will be a treat for those who have the resolve to wait."Allen Meadows 92-94 points

Guillon Gevrey Chambertin 1er Cru Petit Chapelle 2013 Magnum Product #30040 (In Stock)
Guillon Gevrey Chambertin 1er Cru Petit Chapelle 2013 Magnum Guillon Gevrey Chambertin 1er Cru Petit Chapelle 2013 Magnum

With the Gevrey Vieilles Vignes, this is one of the truly amazing values in this offering, delivering Grand Cru level ripeness, concentration, and complexity at a price well under many very good 1er Crus.  As with the Grand Crus, Jean-Michel ferments Petite Chapelle in a brand-new, open-top, wood fermenter before aging it in the best French oak money can buy.  You can begin to peak in on its development in 2020 if you like, but put some away to drink from 2023 to whenever.

"Sweet Spot Outstanding. Ample wood spice and menthol nuances add breadth to the beautifully complex and markedly ripe plum, cassis and black currant suffused nose. There is a beguiling sense of underlying tension to the precise and mineral-driven big-bodied flavors that possess both excellent volume and plenty of power, all wrapped in a firm, austere and overtly tannic finale. Like the old vines Gevrey this is an old school example and is best suited for those who have the patience to wait as this will definitely require it."Allen Meadows 91-93 points
