Chapoutier Bila Haut Cotes Du Roussillon Villages 2016 Product #32637 (In Stock)
Chapoutier Bila Haut Cotes Du Roussillon Villages 2016 Chapoutier Bila Haut Cotes Du Roussillon Villages 2016

Well, now.  This is a whole lot of wine for under $20.  It's about 45% each Grenache  and Syrah plus 10% Carignan, all grown on slopes along the Agly Valley.  The gneiss and schist soils are very free draining, forcing the vines to really drive their roots down and pick up plenty of Roussillon's classic minerality to go with the dark fruit and lavender notes.  For all the richness, this is very poised and pure and while it will be lovely right now with lamb or beef it's likely to be better still in 2018.

"An inky colored effort, the 2016 Côtes du Roussillon Villages Les Vignes de Bila Haut offers a beautiful freshness and purity as well as fabulous notes of jammy blackberries, violets, pepper and hints of leather. Rich, concentrated and tasting like it costs four times the price, drink it over the coming 4-5 years."Wine Advocate 89-91 points

Steindorfer Apetlon Rouge Burgenland 2015 Product #32732 (In Stock)
Steindorfer Apetlon Rouge Burgenland 2015 Steindorfer Apetlon Rouge Burgenland 2015

The 2013 edition was our most popular Austrian red wine ever – and the 2015 is clearly better! The father/son team of Ernst and Roland Steindorfer craft this wine from their nicely ripe Burgenland plots of Blaufränkisch (40%), St. Laurent and Zweigelt (30% each).  Aging for 17 months in 2nd and 3rd use French oak barriques pulls the wine together nicely.  The flavors are a bit richer and deeper this year, with roasted strawberry and blackberry puree fruit complemented by complex shadings of exotic spice, dark chocolate, and earth.  The sweet, tangy, fruit pumps out through a finish supported by fine tannins and leaving notes of chocolate, spice, and fruit lingering behind.  It’s juicy and fruit-filled enough to enjoy solo and has the rich earth, chocolate and crisp tannins to match roasted meats and more.

"The nose brims with fruit. Fleshy, almost overripe red cherry sets the tone on the nose that carries through to the palate. The body is juicy but has some grip while the cherry fruit attains crunch, a touch of white pepper spice and more freshness than the nose would suggest. The finish is vivid and moreish.”Wine Enthusiast 91 points

Pago Casa Gran Falcata Blanco 2016 Product #32664 (In Stock)
Pago Casa Gran Falcata Blanco 2016 Pago Casa Gran Falcata Blanco 2016

That the folks at Pago Casa Gran can make balanced, fresh, stylish red wines on the hot, bulk-wine focused, plains of Valencia is surprising enough.  That they could make this utterly delicious, vibrant and aromatic white is pretty absurd!  Here they blend a classic aromatic Spanish white grape - Moscatel (aka the ancient varietal Muscat Blanc) – with France’s Thanksgiving-friendly Gewürztraminer to create a fabulously rich but bone dry beauty.

You'll find a supremely expressive and just a bit wild nose of exotic spice, rose petal and citrus and stone fruit that really jumps out of the glass - even with turkey and pie in the oven, you'll be able to smell this just fine!  Then you'll love how it explodes with flavors of ripe passionfruit, white peach, fresh rose, green plum and spice ranging from ginger to nutmeg to anise.  Best of all, after all that mouth-coating flavor, the wine finishes dry, crisp and minerally, making your mouth water and getting you ready for a big bite of...well, pretty much anything!  Unique, satisfying and delicious.

Steininger Gruner Veltliner Grand Gru 2016 Product #32694 (In Stock)
Steininger Gruner Veltliner Grand Gru 2016 Steininger Gruner Veltliner Grand Gru 2016

The name is a fun play on words – evoking both the French concept of “Grand Cru” quality and the Steininger’s belief that this is a “Grand” Grüner Veltliner!  Fruit for this wine comes from the Steininger’s best vineyard and is harvested in very late September or October.  The ripe fruit ferments in stainless steel and then goes into large acacia wood casks for malolactic fermentation and aging.

We often feature the rich, creamy, Grand Grü for Thanksgiving, and (as many of you know), the 2016 handled that cacophony of flavors with ease.  But in the great 2016 vintage, Carl and Brigita Steininger’s top white soars to new heights, matching the base notes of ripe pear fruit with top notes of citrusy and green apple acidity.  The combination of richness and freshness makes this the perfect white to bridge the chill of winter and sunny warmth of spring – or to enjoy anytime at all.

"This wine's subdued nose just hints at pear and yeast. The palate combines fresh, pure green pear fruit with a slightly textured, sonorous hint of sage and soy-scented yeast. The overall tone is one of wonderfully rich pear fruit."Wine Enthusiast 92 points

Amalie Robert Chardonnay Her Silhouette 2016 Product #32608 (In Stock)
Amalie Robert Chardonnay Her Silhouette 2016 Amalie Robert Chardonnay Her Silhouette 2016

From a great Oregon Chardonnay vintage, this is a delicious, mouthwatering, blend of  Dijon clone 76 and 95 Chard made in tank with no malolactic fermentation.  Crisp green and red apple fruit gets depth from a bit of ripe stone fruit and zip from notes of Meyer lemon and Key lime.  Finishes generous and long with apple and stone fruit lingering nicely.  No oak, no malo, no kidding: delicious Chardonnay!

"High-pitched Meyer lemon and green apple aromas are complemented by suave jasmine and zesty mineral notes. Tangy and focused on the palate, offering bitter citrus zest and pear skin flavors that pick up a gingery accent with air. Shows a hint of fennel on the finish, which lingers with strong, subtly sweet tenacity."  Vinous (Raynolds) 91 points

Girardin Bourgogne Blanc Cuvee Saint-Vincent 2015 Product #32613 (In Stock)
Girardin Bourgogne Blanc Cuvee Saint-Vincent 2015 Girardin Bourgogne Blanc Cuvee Saint-Vincent 2015

An estate once known for oaky, fat, wines has poured on the elegance, focus and finesse over the past decade - without sacrificing generosity and deliciousness.  One taste of the 2015 Bourgogne Blanc will certainly give you a fine idea of what to expect from the "big boy" wines. Better:  it will give you a great, all-purpose, Burgundy Chardonnay you'll love drinking solo and with a broad range of foods now - 2021.

Much of this wine comes from declassified lots of Chassagne-Montrachet and Meursault, all hand harvested, meticulously sorted, and gently fermented and aged in 500 liter barrels with no new oak.  Generous orchard fruits - peach, pear, and green apple - are framed by notes of toasted hazelnut, fresh butter, and just a hint of mint.  There's a creaminess to the texture, with fine definition and delineation, and a long, fruit-filled, finish.  Delicious and a great value in today's crazy expensive Burgundy market!

Clua Milliennium Tinto 2013 Product #32666 (In Stock)
Clua Milliennium Tinto 2013 Clua Milliennium Tinto 2013

SAVE 40%!  In this fascinatingly delicious wine, Xavier Clua has captured the changable essence of his Terra Alta Vineyards.  Vineyards that move from clay, to rocky chalk, to lightly sandy across his 450-500 meter site.  Days and nights range from baking hot to bracing chill.  And his grapes here start with classic Garnatxa Negra (Garnacha) and pull in complements of Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah.  Put all that together with a year in 50/50 new/second use barrel, and you get a wine that has a lot to say - and says it with power and charm.

On first pour and sniff, you can tell this is going to be a wild ride!  Aromas of deep roasted black fruits - plums, berries, cherries - turn rich and deep with air and are framed by scents of subtle spice, light balsamic and a hint of roasted meat.  In the mouth, this is one of those wines that walks a tightly focused path between rich indulgence and intense verve.  Deeply expressive flavors of wild blackberry, black currant, raspberry, licorice and balsamic are lifted across the palate by a burst of tangy blackberry juice, fresh blood orange, and fresh floral notes.  A beguiling hint of walnut runs under the mouthwatering finish where fresh picked berry and blood orange flavors ride over fine-grained tannins.

Or at least that's what I got from my tasting.  The truth is that this is a wine in motion, and what you'll smell, taste, and feel from it will shift and evolve over the hours you have it in your glass.  A joy to drink now and plenty of potential to improve through 2023.

Amalie Robert Pinot Meunier 2015 Product #32607 (In Stock)
Amalie Robert Pinot Meunier 2015 Amalie Robert Pinot Meunier 2015

A "failed" experiment (well, "abandoned," anyway) with sparkling wine left Ernie Pink and Dena Drews with a few acres of Pinot Meunier that's just too good to abandon.  So they make this delicious red from it - based on the huge 92 point rating for the 2014, it's one of the finest still red Pinot Meuniers in the world!

The 2015 picks up where that stunner left off. This is a pretty wine in the glass, with a translucent red brick color you can easily see through.  Inviting aromas of red cherry, sweet strawberry, and candied rose petal pull you in to ripe, vibrant, flavors of bitter cherry, crushed raspberry, and a beguiling floral/anise note on the finish.  Nice tension between the sweet fruit and tart acids and just enough fine tannin to make this easy to enjoy with all kinds of food.

Ch Bouyer Clos De La Cure St Emilion Grand Cru 2014 Product #32751 (In Stock)
Ch Bouyer Clos De La Cure St Emilion Grand Cru 2014 Ch Bouyer Clos De La Cure St Emilion Grand Cru 2014

A beautifully delicious 2014 St. Emilion Grand Cru.  The wine comes from the heart of the Right Bank’s finest vineyards, on gravel/clay soils similar to those at nearby Cheval Blanc.  A cuvee of 75% Merlot and 25% Cabernet Franc with 12-15 months in 50% new French oak, it’s a wine that’s all about purity and finesse – but lacking nothing in concentration, length and staying power on your palate and in your cellar.

The wine smells really, really, good.  An initial burst of sweet currant fruit evolves into complex, integrated, aromas of cured tobacco, black currant, Five Spice powder, cedar and lead pencil.  On the palate, this wine is all about purity and poise, gracefully gliding across your tongue with layered flavors of red currant, blackberry, and spice and subtle undertones of pencil shavings, cured tobacco and violets.  There's a classic layer of dusty tannin supporting the vivid fruit, flower and herb finish that melts away nicely.  You can enjoy this right now – just pop and pour! – and will love it even more as it develops still more complexity over the next 10-15 years.  Exciting and delicious.

Union Sacre Cabernet Sauvignon Le Confident 2016 Product #32833 (In Stock)
Union Sacre Cabernet Sauvignon Le Confident 2016 Union Sacre Cabernet Sauvignon Le Confident 2016

The bottom-line here is simple:  buy this glorious California Cabernet while you can at these crazy low prices.  Because this winery and wine are going to pop up on critics’ radar soon enough, and then you’ll struggle to find (and possibly afford) it.  Union Sacre is a fairly new venture of Michigan-born Philip Muzzy and France’s Xavier Arnaudin.  What’s most exciting about this project is how Philip and Xavier don’t try to do too much (well, the labels are extravagant, but they work).

This is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon from a great 2016 harvest in Santa Barbara’s Happy Canyon AVA.  It delivers genuinely soaring aromas of classic Cabernet fresh black currant, crushed raspberry, sweet spice, and dusty dried herb.  It’s richly textured in the mouth and fully ripe, but remains phenomenally pure, silky and elegant.  Bold flavors of crushed black berries, cassis, spice, tobacco and cedar get an exotic lift of burnt orange peel, filling your mouth through the middle and continuing to pump out and linger over a long, silky  smooth, finish.  Delicious and easy to drink tonight, Le Confident will just get better over the next 5-10 years.  By which time fame and market forces will have caught up with this exciting new winery and prices will be much, much, higher.

Girardin Santennay 1er Cru Clos De Tavanne 2015 Product #32616 (In Stock)
Girardin Santennay 1er Cru Clos De Tavanne 2015 Girardin Santennay 1er Cru Clos De Tavanne 2015

Not originally slated to come to Virginia, but one taste at the Domaine in March led us to demand an allocation!  It's small, but well worth grabbing a Chardonnay that delivers extraordinary value for money. Clos de Tavannes is an extension of the vineyard that made Vincent Girardin famous, Les Gravieres, but with more limestone and less clay.  Fermented and aged in 500 liter dimi-muids (15% new), this develops plenty of creamy richenss but no overt oak flavor.

A big step up from the Bourgogne Blanc in terms of concentration, richness and class, this delivers bold aromas and flavors of stone fruit, yellow apple, toasted hazelnut, fresh mint, and tangy cultured butter.  Still a bit youthfully tight on first opening, the wine flowers to reveal fine depth and richness and a long, chalky, finish.  Delicious and highly recommended.

Dom Du Pavillon (Bichot) Beaune Les Epenottes 2015 Product #32758 (In Stock)
Dom Du Pavillon (Bichot) Beaune Les Epenottes 2015 Dom Du Pavillon (Bichot) Beaune Les Epenottes 2015

An exciting expression of Burgundy's magnificent 2015 vintage and marriage of Pommard power with Beaune village level purity and finesse.  Beaune Les Epennottes is the extension of Pommard's 1er Epenottes vineyard across the village border to the north.  Bichot's 30-40 year-old vines dig deep into the clay/limestone soils in their tiny, 1.5 acre, parcel.  After fermentation in conical oak vats the wines rests 16 months in 20-30% new oak.

We love how this gives a solid dose of (much more expensive!) 1er Cru Pommard richness and power to Beaune rouge's classic red berry fruit and supple, elegant, texture.  It's already delicious (try it with duck or goose at Christmas!), will be better still in 2020, and should deliver delight through 2030 at least.

"A fresh, pretty and bright nose features notes of various red berries and earth that are trimmed in just enough wood to remark upon. The velvety, round and seductively textured middle weight flavors possess solid volume while maintaining good balance on the softly austere finale. This is a quality Beaune villages."Allen Meadows 88-92 points

Chanson Beaune 1er Cru Clos du Roi 2015 Product #32559 (In Stock)
Chanson Beaune 1er Cru Clos du Roi 2015 Chanson Beaune 1er Cru Clos du Roi 2015

Clos du Roi is at the northern end of the Beaune AOC and, like so many fine Beaune reds, drinks like a cross between Volnay (silky, perfumed) and Pommard (firm, powerful).  From organically grown grapes, winemaker Jean-Pierre Confuron used 100% whole clusters during his cool, long, fermentation and aged the wine for 16 months in a mixture of used and new cask. Decant for at least 2 hours now to let the reduction blow off or hold a while and let time work its magic.

"A very pungent nose is composed of reduction, menthol and wood toast. Otherwise there is good freshness to the velvet-textured and mouth coating middle weight flavors that possess a juicy and fleshy mouth feel while delivering fine length on the chewy and serious finale. This isn't an elegant wine and it's unusually structured for Clos du Roi but it should make for a fine effort if it's allowed at least 6 to 8 years of cellaring."Allen Meadows 90-92 points

Amalie Robert Pinot Noir Amalie's Cuvee 2012 Amalie Robert Pinot Noir Amalie's Cuvee 2012

Co-owner Dena Drews' barrel selection is all about aromas - and what lovely aromas they are!  A whole basket of ripe and vibrant cherries with hints of rose petal and blackberry and just a touch of cinnamon and clove.  On the palate there's the amplitude and richness of the vintage but also a remarkable vibrancy and lift.  Sweet red and black cherry, crushed raspberry, a bit of cola and spice flavors dart around your palate with clove-studded orange peel accents.  The finish is firm, but silky smooth, with tangy fruit making your mouth water and get ready for duck, salmon or anything else you'd care to through at it.

"Brilliant red. A complex, seductively perfumed bouquet evokes ripe black raspberry, cherry cola, Asian spices and smoky minerals. Juicy and precise, showing strong lift and cut to the sweet red and dark berry and lavender pastille flavors. The spice and mineral notes add bite to a very long, floral-tinged finish that's shaped and given grip by silky, harmonious tannins. This is a pretty graceful rendition of the vintage, which is populated mostly by deeper, brawnier Pinots."  Vinous (Raynolds) 92 points

Amalie Robert Pinot Noir Estate 2012 Amalie Robert Pinot Noir Estate 2012

As usual, Ernie's selection shows the influence of whole-cluster fermentation right on the nose, with plenty of spice to the red raspberry and cherry fruit.  And, on the palate, this is less about fruit and more about spice, earth, and sassafras root - not that there's any shortage of 2012's beautiful, ripe, mouthwatering fruit!  Firmer and more spicy on the finish, where the wine really grips with firm, powerful, tannins.  A wonderfully complex, spicy, Pinot that would be pretty darn amazing with lamb tagine or anything with earthy base notes and exotic spice.

"Brilliant red. A hugely perfumed bouquet evokes fresh red berries, candied rose, allspice and blood orange, plus a zesty mineral quality that builds in the glass. Graceful and precise on the palate, offering spicy red fruit and floral pastille flavors that show zero fat and excellent balance. This weightless, sharply focused Pinot finishes with wonderful finishing energy and very soft tannins."  Vinous (Raynolds) 93 points

Dom Larue Puligny Montrachet 1er Cru Les Garennes 2008 Product #32856 (In Stock)
Dom Larue Puligny Montrachet 1er Cru Les Garennes 2008 Dom Larue Puligny Montrachet 1er Cru Les Garennes 2008

We drank this at our January 2017 staff dinner.  The wines before and after it were far grander, but I thought it would be fun to pop this and see what time had done.  For every single staff member and guest at the table that evening, this was the wine of the night.  Until a few days ago, I wrongly assumed there was no more to be had.

But there is, and the wine is damn fine.  Les Garennes is high on the Puligny hill, a site that gives cool, restrained, balanced wines that perfectly fit Didier’s restrained, balanced, winemaking style.  At age 9, this is all about pure golden apple fruit, lemon citrus lift, toasted hazelnut complexity, and crushed rock minerality.  It starts with intense focus, expands on your palate with generous breadth, and than snaps into mouthwatering precision on the finish where French butter, ripe apple, fresh mint, and crushed chalk flavors sail on and on.  A magnificent match for shellfish, fried foods, or anything with a good dose of herb.

Chanson Pernand-Vergelesses 1er Cru Les Caradeux 2015 Product #32558 (In Stock)
Chanson Pernand-Vergelesses 1er Cru Les Caradeux 2015 Chanson Pernand-Vergelesses 1er Cru Les Caradeux 2015

Tucked into a valley to the north of Corton-Charlemagne, the pretty little village of Pernand-Vergelesses is easy to miss while driving up and down the Route de Grand Cru.  Most of the vineyards here are east-facing, and in cooler vintages can struggle to ripen fully.  But in a fine, warm, year like 2015, the 1er Crus of Pernand are able to balance ripeness and freshness perfectly – as they do here!

"Outstanding Top Value. There is enough wood present to remark upon suffusing the citrus and mineral reduction scents. Once again there is plenty of volume to the round, supple and attractively intense flavors that exhibit even better minerality on the sappy, powerful and mouth coating finish. This too is really very good and worth your consideration."Allen Meadows 91 points

"A focused, lemon-tinged white, whose linear profile and lively acidity corral the citrus, stone and spice notes on the lingering finish. Comes together nicely with air, so decant now or cellar for a year. 70 cases imported."Wine Spectator 91 points

Corliss Estate Red Blend Columbia Valley 2012 Product #32574 (In Stock)
Corliss Estate Red Blend Columbia Valley 2012 Corliss Estate Red Blend Columbia Valley 2012

Not a "second wine", but a Bordeaux Blend with only 50% Cabernet Sauvignon vs 97% for the Cabernet Sauvignon.  It's a tad more approachable than the Cabernet and clearly more elegant but still has all the long-term cellar staying power you could want. Decant now or drink from 2020.

"The nose offers a panoply or aromas without any sign of excess ripeness: huckleberry, alpine raspberry, plum and coriander, with sexy oak tones and a hint of medicinal lift. Wonderfully elegant, silky and tactile, with compellingly sweet currant and black cherry fruit perfectly balanced by harmonious acidity. A complete wine with great texture and energy. Still a bit tight on the back, but already spreads out to saturate the palate. The noble tannins should carry this wine for a long time."  Vinous (Tanzer) 95+? points

"The 2012 Columbia Valley Red Wine is another rock star Bordeaux blend that’s made from 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 29% Cabernet Franc, 13% Merlot, and the balance Petit Verdot and Malbec. It was aged 28 months in 65% new French oak. Notes of cassis, tobacco leaf, lead pencil shavings and black currants all emerge from this rich, full-bodied and concentrated effort that has a big, layered texture, no hard edges and impeccable balance. It’s slightly more approachable than the straight Cabernet, yet should nevertheless evolve for just as long."Wine Advocate 95 points

Vajra Barolo Bricco Delle Viole 2013 Product #32720 (In Stock)
Vajra Barolo Bricco Delle Viole 2013 Vajra Barolo Bricco Delle Viole 2013

Since we first encountered it in the 2006 vintage, we've come to love Vajra's flagship Bricco della Viole Barolo.  The vineyard lies high up the side of the highest hill in the commune of Barolo.  The altitude cools the vines a bit, but the perch above the fog line gives the grapes loads of warming sunshine every day.  Only older vines from the hill go into the Cru bottling after a 40 day fermentation/maceration and 42 months aging in 25-50 hectoliter Slavoniann oak barrels.  The site and hands-off winemakinng give this unusual purity and elegance to go with the powerhouse structure and intense flavors.  The wine’s beauty is already apparent after 3 hours in decanter, but it will sing most sweetly from 2021.

"The 2013 Barolo Bricco delle Viole is a real head-turner. Sweet, perfumed, vivid and exceptionally beautiful, the 2013 is simply stunning. A wine of exceptional finesse and sensuality, the 2013 hits all the right notes. Today, the 2013 reminds me of the 2008, but with more depth, density and creaminess - especially through the middle - and slightly redder fruit tones."  Vinous (Galloni) 97 points

Corliss Cabernet Sauvignon Columbia Valley 2012 Product #32575 (In Stock)
Corliss Cabernet Sauvignon Columbia Valley 2012 Corliss Cabernet Sauvignon Columbia Valley 2012

Philippe Melka consults at this top-flight Washington estate that is investing both the money and time to do things exactly right.  Their flagship Cabernet is tightly wound and densely packed today but will be explosively delicious from 2020 or so.  If you like Napa classics like Bond, this is going to delight you at one-third the price.

"The nose offers stunningly primary, pure aromas of blueberry, cassis, licorice, botanical herbs and high-pitched spices. Extremely densely packed and savory; drier and more brooding in the mouth than the nose suggests, and less sweet in the early going than the red blend in spite of its almost glyceral texture. Very deep flavors of dark berries, Baker's chocolate and clove are supported by building, ripe tannins that coat the teeth. Finishes with impressive slow-building persistence. This will need time."  Vinous (Tanzer) 95+ points

"A wine that I would put up there with the crème de la crème of Washington State Cabernet is the 2012 Columbia Valley Cabernet Sauvignon from Corliss, which is insanely good and does everything right. It is made from 97% Cabernet and 3% Petit Verdot that spent 28 months in 70% new French oak. It’s saturated ruby/purple color is followed by fabulous notes of crème de cassis, toasted spice, chocolate and tobacco leaves. These give way to a full-bodied, seamless and layered 2012 that has fabulous purity and freshness, a big, rich mid-palate and sweet tannin that emerge on the finish, all suggesting it will have a long life. Forget bottles for 4-5 years and drink over the following two decades. Bravo!"Wine Advocate 97 points
