Palacio de Bornos Sauvignon Blanc 2015 Product #30939 (In Stock)
Palacio de Bornos Sauvignon Blanc 2015 Palacio de Bornos Sauvignon Blanc 2015

We've loved Palacio de Bornos Verdejo for years, but just wait until you try their zesty Sauvignon Blanc!  Like the Verdejo, this is from the hot, arid, vineyards of Spain's Rueda where plenty of sunshine gives great ripeness and cool, crisp, nights (and very careful winemaking) translate into...well, a cool, crisp, white!  This juicy value pumps out loads of citrus and green grape fruit with an enlivening dash of herbal Meyer lemon.  Delicious and fun to drink.

"Dried lemon, pear skin, melon and quinine on the mineral-accented nose and in the mouth. Dry, nervy and sharply focused, picking up an exotic pineapple nuance as the wine opens up. Finishes taut and spicy, showing good energy and a touch of succulent herbs."  Vinous (Raynolds) 89 points

Ch De La Chesnaie Muscadet Chereau Carre 2015 Product #31485 (In Stock)
Ch De La Chesnaie Muscadet Chereau Carre 2015 Ch De La Chesnaie Muscadet Chereau Carre 2015

A classic Muscadet from from the exciting 2015 vintage. Bold, saline, aromas of green apple, citrus and stone lead to a fresh, salty, palate with lean, green, fruit, tons of minerality, and a pulsing energy that just won't quit.  Finishes long and pure and clean with notes of lime, mineral, and more lingering on and on.  The warm vintage gives a bit more heft than usual, but still plenty of refreshing cut.

Dom Bernier (Les Frères Couillaud) Chardonnay 2015 Product #30615 (In Stock)
Dom Bernier (Les Frères Couillaud) Chardonnay 2015 Dom Bernier (Les Frères Couillaud) Chardonnay 2015

The brothers Couillaud are among the most outstanding winegrowers of the western Loire Valley.  And while their Muscadet is terrific, it was this complex and distinctive Chardonnay that captured our attention.  The 2015 harvest yielded plump, ripe, Chardonnay fruit with plenty of heft and balancing acidity.  They fermented about 8% in barrel and the rest in concrete tanks, allowing all of the wine to go through malolactic fermentation.  The result is an amazingly rich, creamy, almost Meursault-like Chardonnay with the zesty cut and minerality of a top Chablis.  Honey, cream, chalk, and tart green apple aromas and flavors are delivered with nice energy and drive and linger on a long, mouthwatering, brilliantly complex finish.  A tad richer and deeper than the 2014, but just as pure and mineral and delicious.

Bedouet Clos Des Grands Primos Muscadet Sevre Et Maine 2015 Product #30753 (In Stock)
Bedouet Clos Des Grands Primos Muscadet Sevre Et Maine 2015 Bedouet Clos Des Grands Primos Muscadet Sevre Et Maine 2015

Having converted his Clos des Grand Primos vineyard to certified organic farming, Michel Bedouet is delivering on Muscadet’s potential.  The vineyard is a rocky mess of granite, schist and gneiss - no fun to farm, but wonderful for Muscadet's Melon de Bourgogne grape.  The 2015 delivers all the saline minerality and chiseled cut you'd expect from fine Muscade, but also a generous roundness to the texture and a plenty of ripe apple and tangy lemon-lime fruit. You’ll taste the benefits of extended aging on the lees – spent yeast cells left after fermentation – in the wine’s wet stone and chalk minerality, but love how the fresh fruit holds center stage and pumps on through a long finish of lemon, apple, lime zest and fresh thyme.  Sure, it’s a great wine for shellfish, but you’ll love it with almost any summertime dish or simply all on its own.

Casa Santos Lima Confidencial Reserva 2013 Product #31638 (In Stock)
Casa Santos Lima Confidencial Reserva 2013 Casa Santos Lima Confidencial Reserva 2013

If you enjoy juicy Cotes du Rhone, fruit-forward California Rhone Rangers, and plummy Spanish Tempranillo, then do not miss this spectacular Portuguese value. You’ll love the sophisticated aromas of graphite, crushed berry, fresh mint, smoke and black plum.  Sweetly fruited and supple on the palate with more currant, blackberry, and raspberry fruit accented by notes of baker’s chocolate, spice, licorice, and berry blossoms.  The flavors are very clear and delineated and the texture much more suave than you’d expect from such a young wine – especially one made from 10 different Old World grapes.  The tannins have softened since the review below, so enjoy right now with grilled foods and warm weather!

"Six months in a mix of French and Portuguese oak has given this wine a rich, smooth character. Produced from a field blend of more than 40 different varieties, the wine is stylishly structured and ripe with blackberry fruits."Wine Enthusiast 91 points

Castil Harria Reserva Navarra 2005 Product #31655 (In Stock)
Castil Harria Reserva Navarra 2005 Castil Harria Reserva Navarra 2005

The ability of even pretty modest Tempranillo-based Spanish wines to age well is on display here in spades.  On release, this was a nice little $15 red from a good co-op in Navara, not far from Rioja.  The co-op's members grow mainly Garnacha, but this wine takes advanage of some plots of rich and dark-fruited Temparnillo given extra lift from dashes of Garnacha, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon.  At age 11, the wine has held onto its fruit - bright cherry with a hint of Grenache-y strawberry - nicely and shows layer upon layer of mellow oak spice.  Fine and dusty tannins give support but certainly don't get in the way of casual sipping. And as the wine has gained age and complexity, the price has just gone down.  Well worth a try!

From the fine co-op in Tavel, this GSM blend shows off Tavel's best grape - Mourvedre - with style.  The aromas are rich, earthy, and loaded with garrigue and dark black fruit.  The dark blackberry and black raspberry fruit forms the core of the palate, with more of Mourvedre's classic earth and garrigue tones adding interest and a nice dose of firm tannin at the end.  Old-school fun.

Rubus Cabernet Sauvignon California 2015 Product #31862 (In Stock)
Rubus Cabernet Sauvignon California 2015 Rubus Cabernet Sauvignon California 2015

If you're looking for subtle, elegant, sophisticated California Cabernet...then look elsewhere.  Because this is rowdy, pumped up, boldly fruited, vanilla and chocolate-laced Cab with French oak spice and a finish as plump as a feather pillow.  Importer and Master Sommelier Fran Kysela created the Rubus label so he could find under-appreciated fruit in great growing regions and turn it into crowd-pleasing wines a wallet-delighting prices.  This is the best we've tasted in the series, with good heft (at just 13.5% abv) and oodles of chocolate-covered cherry fruit and sweet oak spice.  Soft enough to sip at a casual cookout, bold enough to enjoy with burgers, steaks or lamb, and affordable enough to share with a crowd.

A terrific Tempranillo from the windmill-dotted plains of La Mancha.  Excellent ripeness gives plenty of blackberry and black plum fruit and nine months in American oak adds complex spice and herb accents.  Enough volume to give heft here and make this a fine cookout or roasted meat red, but also enough softness and suppleness of structure for solo sipping.  Fine value, too.

Bliss Family Blissful Red Blend 2014 Product #32003 (In Stock)
Bliss Family Blissful Red Blend 2014 Bliss Family Blissful Red Blend 2014

While “Blissful Red” is play on this winegrowing family’s name, it’s also a pretty good description of how you’ll feel about this old fashioned “mixed blacks” blend at a very “old school” California price!  Irv Bliss fell in love with California’s Central Coast during a visit in the 1930s and then – a few years later – purchased this 450 acre Medocino estate at auction sight unseen.  Today his grandchildren continue to farm grapes here, selling some of their crop and – just like Irv – making a bit of wine for family, friends – and you!

Back in 1930s California, the notion of planting a vineyard to a single grape varietal was just getting started, so Irv followed in local tradition and planted his field to a mixture of grapes that had historically done well in the region.  This wine is an homage to Irv, blending Primitivo, Zinfandel, Sangiovese, Merlot, Barbera, Cab and Syrah to create a delicious “kitchen sink” red blend.  It's nice and dark and full of ripe, spicy, fruit - think briary raspberry, blackberry and cherry - with a hint of herb and Italian structure.  A great gush of cherry fruit, earth, smoke and spice pops on the juicy finish.  At just 13.5% alcohol (and a great sale price), it’s definitely the kind of wine you can enjoy all day long with pasta, pizza, burgers, sausages, and lots and lots of friends!

Bulgariana Cabernet Sauvignon Thracian Valley 2012 Product #30857 (In Stock)
Bulgariana Cabernet Sauvignon Thracian Valley 2012 Bulgariana Cabernet Sauvignon Thracian Valley 2012

This is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon grown on the broad, warm, Thracian Plain in Bulgaria's south, just north of Greece and west of the Black Sea.  Ripe Cabernet fruit reaches the winery cool and receives just the right amount of time on the skins before finishing aging in tank.  Plenty of chocolaty richness here, with big black raspberry and currant fruit and accents of tobacco and cedar.  Michel Rolland consults here, and his touch with tannins shows in the smooth, velvety, finish.  A fantastic value you'll enjoy with anything roasted or grilled.

"Dark garnet to the eye, this wine has aromas of black cherry, black raspberry, coffee and freshly ground black pepper. Flavors of height-of-summer cherry, raspberry and baking spice persist on the palate through a finish that is awash in silky tannins."Wine Enthusiast 90 points

Bodegas Ego Jumilla Fuerza 2013 Product #32155 (In Stock)
Bodegas Ego Jumilla Fuerza 2013 Bodegas Ego Jumilla Fuerza 2013

For years, Spain's baking hot, dry, high plains south of Madrid were known for Mourvedre reds that were - at best - full of roasted fruit with chewy finishes that would charitably be called "rustic."  It took an Australian - super-consultant Chris Ringland - working with the Gil family of Juan Gil to find a way to bring "modern" flash and polish to Jumilla.  At their Bodegas El Nido, Ringland and the Gil Family perfected the art of cutting hearty Monastrell with ripe Cabernet Sauvignon to create what quickly became the region's most highly rated bottlings.  Ringland went on to repeat the feat at Bodegas Volver (Triga in Alicante) and Bodegas Castano (Solanera in Yecla).

With Fuerza, Bodeags Ego takes the Ringland approach to selected lots of fruit from then 25 hectares of old-vine Monastrell.  Blending 75% Monastrell and 25% Cabernet Sauvignon and aging the young wine in 100% new American oak for 12 months creates a deep, dark, powerful with that’s loaded with blackberry, plum and blackcurrant fruit, layered with sweet wood spice and smoke, and finishes ultra-rich and smooth.  If that’s your kind of wine, then you will look long and hard to find a better example at prices like these!

"Cola, sassafras and clove notes frame a deep core of plum and currant fruit in this dense red. The texture is plush and polished, supported by well-integrated tannins and balsamic acidity. Monastrell and Cabernet Sauvignon. Drink now through 2020."Wine Spectator 90 points

Kellerei Kaltern Caldaro Pinot Grigio 2015 Product #30819 (In Stock)
Kellerei Kaltern Caldaro Pinot Grigio 2015 Kellerei Kaltern Caldaro Pinot Grigio 2015

As Wine Enthusiast said in their 90 point review of the 2010 Caldaro Pinot Grigio - the first vintage we introduced you to - "It's hard to imagine Pinot Grigio better than this."  Over the past five vintages, the wine has gone from strength to strength and is now firmly ensonced as our all-time Pinot Grigio champion - no other comes close.

The 2015 opens with creamy aromas of peach, lime skin, and white flowers.  Take a sip and you’ll find a wine that’s at once crisp and rich and bursting with bright green pear, apple, peach and citrus and a long, mouthwatering, saline-inflected finish.  Just about the perfect all-around white to have on hand this summer, it’s a great match with everything from Spring salads to fresh fish, spicy Thai or cilantro accented Vietnamese dishes.  Or, just sip it all by itself for a delightful and delicious refreshment break.  Pinot Grigio for people who like flavor in their wine and anyone who appreciates outstanding value.

Poppy Chardonnay Santa Lucia Highlands 2014 Product #30882 (In Stock)
Poppy Chardonnay Santa Lucia Highlands 2014 Poppy Chardonnay Santa Lucia Highlands 2014

A young winery - founded in 2003 - with a pretty simple mission:  Make wine folks will enjoy!  And that's what this fun, fruit-filled, and lightly oaked Chardonnay does very well.  It's all from Poppy's vineyards in the Santa Lucia Highlands, first planted in 1972.  Warm sunshine got the grapes fully ripe and bursting with flavor.  Cool nights kept the acids fresh and held the alcohol down to a nicely balanced 13.5%.  About 30% of the wine was done in stainless steel - for fresh, bright fruit - and the rest with oak for creamy richness and complexity.

The 2014 is even better than the 90 point 2013.  You'll find plenty of richness here, with good dollops of grilled pineapple, ripe pear, golden apple, buttery oak and a round, creamy, texture. Turns more crisp in the mouth with apple and bright pear fruit and notes of green apple and butter lingering nicely.  A great party Chard for casual sipping and pretty darn versatile at table, too!

Ch de St Louis Corbieres Prestige 2014 Product #30930 (In Stock)
Ch de St Louis Corbieres Prestige 2014 Ch de St Louis Corbieres Prestige 2014

Corbieres, in the heart of the Languedoc, is famous for turning rich, herb-scented, wines with plenty of heft and fruit - if sometimes a bit too much earthiness and chew.  Here, the team from Ch St Martin de la Garrigue crafts a juicy red that offers up all the good parts of Corbieres with none of the flaws.  It's a blend of Grenache (40%), Syrah (35%) and Cargignan (25%) picked nice and ripe - but not overripe! - and made carefully in tank.

You'll find plenty of the scents and flavors that make Corbieres so much fun - dark raspberry, ripe blueberry, and a big handful of fresh pine and herb - along with a satisfying smoky/meaty depth.  Carignan's bright blueberry fruit keeps things fresh and adds a nice touch of minerality to the fruit and herb-laced finish.  Fine, easy-drinking, fun at your next cookout or casual meal.

Dom Gres St Vincent Cotes Du Rhone Villages 2015 Product #31080 (In Stock)
Dom Gres St Vincent Cotes Du Rhone Villages 2015 Dom Gres St Vincent Cotes Du Rhone Villages 2015

From a unique, organic co-op in the Rhone valley, this delicious, Grenache-based blend delivers satisfying weight and earthiness but stays light on its feet. Unlike many co-ops that blend growers' fruit into one wine, here each makes their own. Though the blend is dominated by Grenache, the Syrah takes center stage on the nose, with classic notes of liquorice, black fruits, and a wonderful whiff of violets.

In the mouth luscious ripe black raspberry and blackberry dance with notes of coffee, olive, and garrigue.  The wine is ripe and full of fruit, but also vibrant and fresh from beginning to end.  Zingy, almost bubbling, fruit acids and fine tannins make this refreshing and a great wine for table.  Ripe, vivid, pure.

Dom d'Ourea Tire Bouchon Vin De France 2015 Product #31175 (In Stock)
Dom d'Ourea Tire Bouchon Vin De France 2015 Dom d'Ourea Tire Bouchon Vin De France 2015

"Tire Bouchon" is the French phrase for a corkscrew, but the literal translation is better:  Cork Puller.  And you're going to pull a lot of these corks this fall and winter! This is a throw-back (in terms of both time and how you'll drink it!) red made from Grenache, Syrah, and 10% old-timey Aramon and Oeillade Noire.  While it's all grown in Adrien Roustan's Vacqueyras vineyards, the old grapes aren't allowed, so it's bottled as Vin de France.  The winemaking is pretty old school, too.  All the grapes are tossed into the vat together, covered with some dry ice, and allowed to start fermentation as they will.  10 days in the fermenter, a few months resting in tank, and then ready for you to slurp!

It's friendly from the first sniff, with open, generous, aromas of crushed black raspberries, sweet cherry, violets, and a hint of ripe black olive.  Take a sip and let the party begin!  This wine just oozes sweet, fresh, very ripe red and black cherry/berry fruit with a touch of cracked pepper, lavender and rich loamy earth for complexity.  Juicy and mouthwatering, but not at all tart, with a bit of Black Forest cake (chocolate and sweet cherry) coming up on the supple, lingering, finish.  Sure, it's going to go swell with all kinds of casual foods - burgers, hot dogs, pizza, stews - but it will shine most brightly when shared with (soon to be very happy) friends!
