Beaux Freres Pinot Noir Beaux Freres Vyd 2015 Product #32189 (In Stock)
Beaux Freres Pinot Noir Beaux Freres Vyd 2015 Beaux Freres Pinot Noir Beaux Freres Vyd 2015

For more than two decades since the first vintage in the early 1990s, this has been one of Oregon's benchmark Pinot Noir bottlings.  And if the wine has lost the thick texture and dense wood influence of earlier years, it has given up nothing in terms of inentsity, complexity and satisfaction.  Mainly own-rooted Pommard and Wadenswil clone from the early 1990s plus a little Dijon clone planted as the old vines failed, this is the essence of Ribbon Ridge Pinot Noir, with lovely red fruit and huge lengh.  As Vinous said in their 94 point review of the 2014:  "Manages to be rich as well as lively, with no rough edges that I can detect."

"A perfect ruby jewel in the glass. Twenty-five years later, our beloved original Estate has outdone itself. Silky-textured and vibrant with layers of tart red berries and mulling spice; then like a deep breath on a misty mountain morning eases seamlessly into fragrant damp earth. Captivating, intricate, and refined even in its youth, this wine’s impressive age-worthiness remains strong. Expect increasing complexity and grace for another twenty years or more."  Winery Notes

Offers impressive presence and polish, with a multilayered, complex core wrapped in rich and expressive blueberry and cherry flavors. Drink now through 2025.Wine Spectator 95 points

Dom Michelot Meursault 1er Cru Les Perrieres 2014 Product #31573 (In Stock)
Dom Michelot Meursault 1er Cru Les Perrieres 2014 Dom Michelot Meursault 1er Cru Les Perrieres 2014

This blends fruit from two small plots of Merusault's greatest vineyard.  One from just to the south of Clos des Perrieres is loaded with limestone and gives richness and depth.  The other from the upper slope (looking down into the Roman quarry that gives the vineyard it's name) grows in thin soils over hard rock, giving vibrancy, energy and minerality.

Even in the forward 2014 vintage, this is quite young but enormously concentrated, complex and promising with huge richness and finishing length.  Give it an hour of air right now with lobster or scallops or let it develop for a while – if you can wait!

“Pure but reticent perfume of citrus fruits, pineapple, crushed rock and flowers. Sappy, densely packed and seamless, offering lovely inner-mouth floral lift to its pineapple and crushed stone flavors. More refined than the previous premier crus here and much longer and smoother on the rising finish. In an adamantly dry, mineral-driven style, but there's already a lot going on here. This wine softened nicely with air, showing attractive sweetness of fruit without losing any of its energy or back-end lift.  Drink 2019-2027”  Vinous (Tanzer) 92 points

“A floral-, apple- and stone-flavored white, boasting a tightly wound structure and a tightfisted finish. Hints of spice emerge, but overall, this needs time to strut its stuff. Best from 2019 through 2027. 2,100 cases made.”Wine Spectator 92 points

Guillon Gevrey Chambertin 1er Cru Champonnets 2015 Product #32514 (In Stock)
Guillon Gevrey Chambertin 1er Cru Champonnets 2015 Guillon Gevrey Chambertin 1er Cru Champonnets 2015

While Champonnets isn't Guillon's "best" wine (because there's a reason the Grand Crus are "Grand"!), it does brilliantly represent what this estate is all about.  Despite perching on the same hill as Grand Cru Ruchottes-Chambertin, the vineyard's northeastern exposure gives most growers lighter, less robust, wines than other 1ers.  Jean-Michel farms this site harder than any other grower, though, making dozens of pruning, trimming, thinning, and de-leafing passes throughout the season to nurture his small yields of berries to perfect ripeness. This is outstanding Gevrey that will shine brightest after 2023.

"Outstanding. A toasty nose offers up notes of dark currant, earth, game and a hint of forest floor. There is excellent richness to the round, velvety and muscular flavors that exude a subtle minerality on the lingering and firm finish. This needs a few years to develop better depth but the material is good enough that more complexity should develop."Allen Meadows 90-92 points

Maillard Corton Renardes Grand Cru 2008 Product #26601 (In Stock)
Maillard Corton Renardes Grand Cru 2008 Maillard Corton Renardes Grand Cru 2008

With all the fuss over the super-ripe 2009s, it's easy to miss out on the classic structure, balance, and charm of bottles like this fine Grand Cru 2008.  This year's model shows off plenty of the animal, earthy, aspect of Corton Renardes but still has a nice core of pretty Pinot fruit.  It's unusually elegant for Corton Renardes, but still packs a punch of powerful flavors and has the perfect balance of fruit, tannin and acid to develop well in cellar for a decade or more.  Or, drink it now with earthy foods and mushrooms!

Dom JJ Confuron Nuits Saint Georges 1er Cru Les Chaboeufs 2012 Product #29038 (In Stock)
Dom JJ Confuron Nuits Saint Georges 1er Cru Les Chaboeufs 2012 Dom JJ Confuron Nuits Saint Georges 1er Cru Les Chaboeufs 2012

A classic; rich and powerful.  Best from 2017-2027.

“Slightly reduced aromas of roasted black raspberry, licorice and violet. A sweet, fine-grained fruit bomb in the mouth, offering more definition and verve than the Boudots to its blackberry and cassis flavors. Creamy-sweet but with nicely integrated acidity and ripe, fine-grained tannins giving the wine shape and energy. This wine was made entirely from vines planted in 1981 as the Meuniers pulled up the oldest vines for replanting before the 2012 season.” International Wine Cellar 91-93 points

“The 2012 Nuits Saint Georges 1er Cru Chaboeufs has a very well defined, slightly metallic bouquet that is vigorous and focused. The palate is very silky and more refined than the Les Boudots. Despite some reduction this seems to have more class and finesse, serving as a decent Nuits Saint Georges without the bells and whistles.” Wine Advocate 92-94 points

“The superb Les Chaboeufs 1er Cru exhibits a dark red fruit nose with hints of herbs and loam. It boasts outstanding floral and dark berry fruit flavor and has an elegant mouth feel with, soft round tannins and a long finish. Drink in 2017 for an additional 10 years minimum.”i-Wine Review 93 points

Beaux Freres Pinot Noir Upper Terrace Vyd 2014 Product #32190 (In Stock)
Beaux Freres Pinot Noir Upper Terrace Vyd 2014 Beaux Freres Pinot Noir Upper Terrace Vyd 2014

Perched on the crest of the next hill north from Mike Etzel's winery, The Upper Terrace Vineyard gives a darker, more powerful, expression of the Beaux Freres style. As the reviews suggest, this is pretty much the apex of Willamette Valley Pinot Noir in 2014 and one you will not want to miss.

"Limpid ruby-red. Explosive, mineral-accented aromas of red berry liqueur, cherry cola, vanilla and potpourri, accompanied by a sexy floral overtone that gains strength as the wine opens up. Juicy, concentrated and expansive on the palate, offering intense black raspberry, cherry compote and floral pastille flavors and a touch of cola. Displays an extremely impressive interplay of power and finesse, showing a seamless texture and a firm mineral spine. A strikingly long, sappy finish features smooth, sneaky tannins, resonating florality and a lingering suggestion of five-spice powder."  Vinous (Raynolds) 95 points

"Supple, velvety, focused and distinctive, with smoky, minerally accents around a core of cherry, raspberry and blueberry fruit. Finishes with presence and persistence on an open texture."Wine Spectator 94 points

Dom La Barroche Chateauneuf Du Pape Pure 2015 Product #32157 (In Stock)
Dom La Barroche Chateauneuf Du Pape Pure 2015 Dom La Barroche Chateauneuf Du Pape Pure 2015

As Jeb Dunnuck says of Pure, “There are only 250 cases produced and it’s year in, year out, one of the greatest Grenache’s made in the world.”  The vine comes from a single, tiny, plot of sandy-soiled vineyard abutting Ch Rayas (one of the region’s greatest and most expensive wines).  Planted by current winemaker Julien Barrot’s grandfather, the vines are now about 115 years old, yielding a tiny crop of amazingly concentrated and intense Grenache fruit.  Julien picks them by hand, ferments the crushed berries in concrete eggs, and then ages the wine in a single, large, very old, Fench oak foudre.  An astonishingly elegant and…well, Pure…take on the Southern Rhone’s most important grape.

"A complex, highly perfumed bouquet evokes fresh dark berries, cola, incense and potpourri, and a hint of smoky minerality emerges with air. Juicy, penetrating black raspberry, bitter cherry and lavender pastille flavors show superb depth and energy and stretch out to become sweeter on the back half. Shows excellent clarity and spicy lift on a long, sappy finish framed by velvety, slow-building tannins. For such a generous wine, there's no lack of vivacity here."  Vinous (Raynolds) 93-95 points

"Offering more kirsch liqueur, lavender, incense and sweet spice, the 2015 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Pure is another gorgeous, balanced, seamless beauty. Fine tannin, full-bodied richness, and solid freshness all develop in the glass, and it has a great finish. Like the traditional cuvée, it's elegant, long, and will keep for 15+ years. This cuvée is always from the same parcel located at the intersection of the le Grand Pierre, le Pointu and Rayas lieux-dits, is fermented all in concrete and spends 18 months in a single foudre. There are only 250 cases produced and it’s year in, year out, one of the greatest Grenache’s made in the world."  JebDunnuck.com 95 points

"One of the most impressive barrel samples of this cuvée I can remember, the 2015 Châteauneuf du Pape Pure is always almost 100% Grenache that comes from a tiny parcel of sandy soils located right at the junction of the Grand Pierre, Pointu and Rayas lieux-dits. Partially destemmed, vinified in concrete and aged in a single, ancient foudre, this sensational-looking Châteauneuf du Pape dishes out incredible amounts of ripe cherries, blueberries, crushed rocks and crushed flowers. Big, full-bodied, thick and unctuous, it got a few expletives in the notes, and for all its size and weight, it stays lively, pure and even elegant. My money is on this beauty being one of the top wines in the vintage."Wine Advocate 95-97 points

Andre Clouet Grand Cru Brut Cuvee 1911 NV (BdN) Product #32530 (In Stock)

A stunning, luxury, Blanc de Noirs Champagne with only 1,911 bottles made each year - commemorating the founding of this outstanding grower of Grand Cru Bouzy Champagne.  The label harks back to the Clouet family's history as official printers to Louis XV, while the wine connects to the Clouet's 350+ years in Bouzy.  It's 100% Grand Cru Pinot Noir from three older vintages and aged 6-7 years in bottle before receiving a modest 6 g/l dossage.

The old-fashioned reed covering and classic bottle/label showcase a serious wine.  Bold aromas of brioche, honeysuckle, dried pineapple, orange peel and toast lead to a creamy but very precise palate of red currant, white stone fruits, preserved lemon, hazelnut and more toasty brioche flavors.  Toast, tangy fruit, hazelnut and mineral flavors linger on the long, dry, finish.  This is lovely Champagne to enjoy with or without food, but consider using a white wine glass (vs. a flute) to get all the aroma.

Guillon Gevrey Chambertin 1er Cru Petite Chapelle 2014 Guillon Gevrey Chambertin 1er Cru Petite Chapelle 2014

With the Gevrey Vieilles Vignes, this is one of the most outstanding values in this offering, delivering Grand Cru level ripeness, concentration, and complexity at a price well under many very good 1er Crus. As with the Grand Crus, Jean-Michel ferments Petite Chapelle in a brand-new, open-top, wood fermenter before aging it in the best French oak money can buy. You can begin to peak in on its development in 2021 if you like, but put some away to drink from 2024 to whenever.

Outstanding "Here too there is moderate but not dominant wood setting off the more elegant and airy red and dark pinot aromas that exhibit background nuances of earth, floral and spice. There is a notably finer mouth feel to the even more mineral-inflected middle weight flavors that retain a lovely sense of delineation on the punchy, focused and well-balanced finale."Allen Meadows 91-93 points

Number 14 on Wine Spectator  Top 100 of 2017!

"Bottled in May, the 2015 Chateauneuf du Pape is a floral, elegant, unbelievably complex wine. Roses and violets, cherries and stone fruit, cinnamon and allspice and more are carried across the full-bodied yet almost weightless palate, finishing in a swirl of silky tannins and lingering spice. Drink it over the next two decades."Wine Advocate 97 points

"This offers a drop-dead gorgeous core of cassis and raspberry pâte de fruit flavors that hold center stage but still allow notes of Lapsang souchong tea, anise, incense and shiso leaf to chime in. Very long, with a sublime feel through the mineral-tinged finish. So seductive already, but this should cruise in the cellar. Drink now through 2040. 6,000 cases made."Wine Spectator 98 points

Pol Roger Brut Vintage 2006 Product #32464 (In Stock)
Pol Roger Brut Vintage 2006 Pol Roger Brut Vintage 2006

Long a benchmark for fine Vintage Champagne, Pol Roger’s 2006 blends about 60% Pinot Noir and 40% Chardonnay and spends at least 8 years on the lees before release.  It’s always one of Champagne’s more powerful wines, but in 2006 had fine elegance, minerality and drive.  You can hold this for 5 years (or longer if you have a more British palate), but its’ delicious now and capable of inspiring some pretty wild reactions – see the Wine Advocate review!

"Sourced in 20 Premier and Grand Crus of the Côte de Blancs and the Montagne de Reims, the 2006 Vintage Brut is a cuvée of 60% Pinot Noir and 40% Chardonnay that was aged for nine years in the 33 meters deep cellar in Epernay. The deep golden-colored wine offers a deep and vinous, very clear and elegant nose of sweet cherries, stewed and baked apples, ripe stone fruits, cinnamon, chalk, brioche, sweet paprika, orangeade and dashes of lemon juice. Full-bodied, rich and round on the palate, this is a creamy textured though pure and highly elegant, firmly structured, powerful and persistent Champagne; it has a noble and rested expression, as well as a long, noble finish. This is midnight Champagne for noble jazz clubs with fine piano music, or to be matched with noble cigars."Wine Advocate 94 points

"It is the balance that stars with this wine. The fruit, acidity and mineral texture are held together in maturing harmony. Still young, the wine is still in the fruity spectrum and yet is very ready to drink now. The acidity and the link between the soft dosage and freshness are all in place."Wine Enthusiast 95 points

"The 2006 Valtellina Superiore Sassella Ultimi Raggi is superb. Dark, rich and translucent, the 2006 captures the essence of Nebbiolo here, in Sassella. Sweet dark cherries, menthol, licorice, game and cloves are all woven together in a fabric of pure class. Layered, balsamic and nuanced, the 2006 possesses remarkable power while retaining considerable finesse. All the elements are simply in the right place. Beringer Private Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon 2013 Product #32576 (In Stock)
Beringer Private Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon 2013 Beringer Private Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon 2013

Legendary Beringer winemaker Ed Sbragia helped create Private Reserve in 1976, his first year at the winery.  The wine began as a single-vineyard bottling from what is now Chabot Vineyard, but over time has been built from the winery’s best-performing sites each year.  The 2013 is all about mountain fruit, with the bulk of the wine coming from Steinhauer and Bancroft Ranches on Howell Mountain plus about 11% from the St. Helena Home Vineyard.  Decant this for 3+ hours if you want to try it today, but it’s best to wait until 2023 and then enjoy for decades to come.

"A big, dense wine, the 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Private Reserve is solid. Much fresher and more delineated than the single-vineyard wines, the 2013 captures the freshness and overall intensity of the year. Graphite, smoke, inky blue/purplish fruit, wild flowers and lavender meld together to form an attractive mélange of aromas and flavors."  Vinous (Galloni) 95 points

"One of the great efforts of recent years, and not surprisingly so, is the 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Private Reserve, a blend of 81% from Howell Mountain, 11% from St. Helena and the rest Calistoga and Mount Veeder. It is a blend of 96% Cabernet Sauvignon 3% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot aged 20 months in 84% new French oak. At 15.2% natural alcohol, this is a big boy, but also classic Napa Cabernet Sauvignon with crème de cassis, graphite, licorice, and a touch of spicy oak. Winemaker Laurie Hook, who has since departed as winemaker, really hit a home run with this beauty. The wine could benefit from 7-10 years cellaring and probably last 30 to 40. When all is said and done, this is an instant classic, the wine full-bodied with oodles of crème de cassis, pen ink, graphite and baking spices. It is multi-dimensional, layered, and one of the all-time great Beringer Private Reserves – and there have been many. Drink 2023-2066"Wine Advocate 97 points

Ken Wright Pinot Noir Shea Vyd 2016 1.5l Product #32483 (In Stock)
Ken Wright Pinot Noir Shea Vyd 2016 1.5l Ken Wright Pinot Noir Shea Vyd 2016 1.5l

Ken’s signature wine and, arguably, Willamette Valley’s signature vineyard.  Wine Advocate has suggested that Shea is the Willamette Valley’s one potential “superstar” vineyard and Ken makes the benchmark wine from this famous site.  Ken uses fruit from three different blocks in the vineyard, two planted to Dijon 114 and one to Dijon 777 clones. Shea always gives black/red fruit - especially blueberry - but with more spice and earth than other Yamhill-Carlton wines.  Always a fine marriage of ripe fruit and juicy, fresh, texture, this usually wants a few years in cellar to show its best. Ken pretty much made the reputation of this vineyard, and it's always one of his most powerful, concentrated, wines.
