Guillon Bourgogne Blanc Chardonnay 2015 Product #31927 (In Stock)
Guillon Bourgogne Blanc Chardonnay 2015 Guillon Bourgogne Blanc Chardonnay 2015

It’s audacious enough to plant Chardonnay right in the middle of the world-famous Pinot Noir vineyard of Gevrey-Chambertin.  But to then make a wine this good from the tiny patches of limestone soil that suit Chardonnay so well…well, that’s just what Jean-Michel Guillon does.

In 2015, the fruit had so much ripeness and intensity that it warranted a full 50% new oak for barrel fermentation and aging.  Already, though, this deep and complex wine has taken up the wood beautifully.  Aromas of golden stone fruit, hazelnut, lemon, fresh butter and mint really soar from the glass.  On the palate, there’s a palate coating richness to the bold flavors of lemon curd, fresh peach and apple, and butter-toasted nut.  The flavors fan out and then snap back into tight focus on a salty-stone, peach, lemon custard and fresh mint finish that sails on and on.  Delicious right now and built to improve for at least 5 years.

Bodegas Laukote Rioja Vendimia Seleccionada 2010 Product #27282 (In Stock)
Bodegas Laukote Rioja Vendimia Seleccionada 2010 Bodegas Laukote Rioja Vendimia Seleccionada 2010

Norberto Miguel only makes this, his top wine, in selected vintages of exceptional ripeness and quality.  It’s from 80+ year-old Tempranillo vines planted by Norberto’s grandfather and grown on the rocky, barren, soils of Rioja Alavesa.  Norberto hand-harvests the grapes when they taste good to him and then crushes them gently by foot to extract plenty of color and flavor without getting harsh tannins from the stems or seeds.  After vinification the wines go into American and French oak barrels (about 30% new)  And there the wine sits until Norberto thinks it’s ready – not one day longer.

The result is just about the perfect marriage between Rioja tradition and modern winemaking sensibility.  In 2010, this wine is just fabulous, supple and mineral with excellent length and very little obvious oak.  Scents of black raspberry and plum fruit accented by notes of sweet spice, tobacco, violets and a touch of iron.  In the mouth, the wine is very pure and elegant, with focused dark fruit and spice lifted by a hint of tangy cherry acidity and supported by silky smooth, ripe, tannins.  With air, a touch of coffee/mocha emerges and fruit broadens, but the minerality and acidity keep the wine focused, pure, and beautiful.  Drink it now with roasted or grilled meats and enjoy how it gains even more layers over the next 8-10 years in cellar.  Outstanding value for a Rioja of this quality and grace.

Maynard's Port Tawny 20 Year Product #30550 (In Stock)
Maynard's Port Tawny 20 Year Maynard's Port Tawny 20 Year

A great example of what is perhaps the most classic style of “wood aged” or “Tawny” Port.  Winemaker Alvaro van Zeller, formerly winemaker at Quinta do Noval, blends this from Port lots that have aged in barrel about 20 years on average.  Plenty of richness and depth here but also a lively note of burnt orange peel and even a touch of fresh red berry.  A delicious value!

"Maynard’s is a brand from Alvaro van Zeller of Barão de Vilar. This 20-year-old is lush in its sweetness, with candied orange peel scents and ripe strawberry flavors that evaporate into a warm finish, lasting on scents of glazed chestnuts. A simple and delicious Tawny."Wine & Spirits 90 points

"The 20 Years Old Tawny Port (Maynard's) comes in at 109 grams per liter of residual sugar. A nice step up on the 10 Year Old Maynard's, also reviewed, this adds some weight, but more importantly, concentration of flavor--those old, classic Tawny nuances. Very pleasing, yet easy to drink, this is a charming 20 that should be available at a nice price."Wine Advocate 90 points

Fleuriet Renaissance Sancerre Les Grandes Marnes 2014 Product #31962 (In Stock)
Fleuriet Renaissance Sancerre Les Grandes Marnes 2014 Fleuriet Renaissance Sancerre Les Grandes Marnes 2014

Old vines (30-60 years) and a mix of Kimmeridgian marl and Silex flint give this fantastic intensity.  The incredibly sophisticated use of large (about 3x the size of a Burgundy barrel) new French oak (60%) transforms that intensity into pure luxurious delight.

It's explosively aromatic, with scents of sliced pineapple, grapefruit flesh and peel, smoky gunflint, and fresh cut grass just jumping out of the glass.  In the mouth it starts like biting into a fresh, perfectly ripe, kumquat - a pop of citrus oil, followed by fleshy orange-tinged citrus fruit and juice and a just-right bite of bitter pith.  A dusting of black pepper and creamy touch of Meyer lemon confit adds complexity as do subtle notes of fresh tarragon and chive.  You don't really experience the oak as "oak" - instead it just rounds the texture and intensifies the Silex gunflint minerality.  Take a sip and wait 90-120 seconds - you'll still be tasting and savoring this beauty.  A remarkable, delicious, supremely sophisticated wine to enjoy tonight and over the next 5 years.

Dom Mongeard Mugneret Bourgogne Rouge 2014 Product #31594 (In Stock)
Dom Mongeard Mugneret Bourgogne Rouge 2014 Dom Mongeard Mugneret Bourgogne Rouge 2014

Burgundy's 2014 vintage gave us silky, supple, reds with lovely fruit and plenty of classic Burgundy terroir.  Here's a great example from 4.5 acres mainly in and near Vosne-Romanee. Ripe, hand-harvested, fruit is 100% destemmed, fermented in tank and then aged in twice-used French oak.  There's a very pretty perfume of tangy red cherry, raspberry, violets and a hint of something earthy - or "animal" as the winemaker says.  On the palate it's very pure and fresh and transparent with a silky feel to the tart cherry/raspberry fruit.  Stony minerality and fine tannins provide support to this very pretty, very delicious, Pinot Noir.  Drink now - 2020 or so.

Dom Louis Michel Chablis 1er Cru Vaillons 2015 Product #32061 (In Stock)
Dom Louis Michel Chablis 1er Cru Vaillons 2015 Dom Louis Michel Chablis 1er Cru Vaillons 2015

In a challenging year like 2015, older vines can make all the difference - as these 35-50 year-old vines on the richer, deeper, soils of the Vaillons hill did here.  The aromas here are very pure and deep with yellow fruits (peach, apricot) and lots of just struck flint minerality.  It's very rich and round on the palate - the 12.9% alcohol is on the high side here - with deep fruit shading towards the tropical before fresh squeezed lemon and lime citrus elevate the flavors with a juicy pop.  The finish is nicely dry, focused, and minerally fresh with enough mouthwatering action to pull you back for another sip.  You can certainly enjoy this right now and will get more flinty, salty, Chablis minerality over the next 3-4 years.

Dow's 10 Year Tawny Port Product #7247 (In Stock)
Dow's 10 Year Tawny Port Dow's 10 Year Tawny Port

Dow’s winemakers pick lots every vintage to go into the Tawny Port program.  The finished Port goes into large barrels and ages slowly, gradually acquiring a nutty, caramel, character and gaining an orangey/tawny color.  Dow’s 10-Year Tawny is made from a blend of these ports that are average approximately 10 years of age - although the “10-Year” designation indicates style more than actual wine age.  Dow’s 10-Year Tawny is a classic - orange peel, caramel, honey, nuts, and dried fig flavors swirl around a hint of red berry fruit.  Once again, the classic Dow dry finish keeps the wine refreshing.

Giulia Negri Barolo La Tartufaia 2010 Product #29760 (In Stock)
Giulia Negri Barolo La Tartufaia 2010 Giulia Negri Barolo La Tartufaia 2010

What happens with a top Burgundy winemaker (Jean-Michel Guillon) encourages friends and importers of wines from France (Olivier Daubresse) and Spain (Jonas Gustafsson) to import a Barolo from Italy?  When the Barolo is the stunning 2010 La Tartufaia from young Giulia Negri – aka “BaroloGirl”, something pretty magical results!

Giulia is a child of Barolo (her family owns the well-respected Serrandenari estate), and has  struck out on her own to make Chardonnay, Pinot Noir (which is how she met Jean-Michel), and a classically styled, very pure, Nebbiolo from Barolo’s great 2010 vintage.  Very pure, lifted, scents of red and black berries waft from the glass with accents of tobacco, plum, dried rose petal, and tar.  It’s nicely relaxed and pure – especially at this young age – on the palate, with juicy red/black fruits, dark chocolate, licorice, tobacco, and hints of smoky oak.  With air, a little truffle and potpourri emerge and the fruit flavors get deeper and more prominent as the wine sails on to a generous finish over sweet, ripe, tannins.  Round and rich, this tempts right now with big tannins that melt away nicely but will become more exciting and explosive from 2017 – 2025.

Calluna Vineyards CVC Chalk Hill 2012 Product #30682 (In Stock)
Calluna Vineyards CVC Chalk Hill 2012 Calluna Vineyards CVC Chalk Hill 2012

Classic Chalk Hill texture and depth here, from first sip through an hour in decanter or years in cellar.  A magnificent value.

"David Jeffrey’s estate, in the hills east of the Russian River Valley, tends to give a cool, taut expression of the Bordelaise grapes, thanks to maritime influence and the vineyard’s sandstone and shale-based soils. This merlot-based blend includes cabernet sauvignon, franc, petit verdot and malbec; in 2012, the wine’s flavors are vigorous and cohesive, with hints of black plum and mint, though the overall impression is primarily mineral, the refreshing glints of fruit completely tied to the structure. It evolves slowly over several days of air, barely loosening, suggesting that it will reward a long stay in the cellar."Wine & Spirits 95 points

"The 2012 Calluna Vineyards Cuvée is a blend of 36% Merlot, 24% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Cabernet Franc and the rest equal parts Petit Verdot and Malbec. More chocolate and mocha appear in this wine, which has a similar color to its predecessors. With a nice, fleshy, opulent mouthfeel, impressive purity, texture and length, the wine seems showy and expressive already and promises to age nicely for 10-15 more years."Wine Advocate 91 points

Ernie Pink and Dena Drews craft this lovely Pinot to tell the story of their vineyard in the vintage, blending different clones and parcels from across their 35 acre site perched above Freedom Hill.  In 2010 it's beautiful with the elegance and purity of this remarkable vintage and the open sophistication that only a little time in bottle reveals.  Lovely now and through 2020.

"Bright red. Smoky, mineral-accented black raspberry and rose oil aromas are complemented by hints of cinnamon and allspice. Gently sweet red fruit flavors are given depth by a cherry pit nuance and sharpened by juicy acidity. Silky in texture and appealingly sweet, finishing with very good clarity, subtle tannins and noteworthy spicy persistence."  Vinous (Raynolds) 91 points

The Côte Chalonnaise village of Montagny is one of the last bastions  of real white Burgundy value, and this rich and vibrant wine makes that point nicely.  Aromas of white fruits, vanilla, and brioche get a nice lift from hints of mint and lime.  Round on the palate with zesty white peach, lemon curd, green apple and fresh hazelnut flavors and a dose of lime zest and crushed stone minerality at the end.  This will work well with sushi and smoked salmon now and with richer fish and poultry dishes over the next few years.

Cantina Del Pino Barbaresco 2012 Product #31762 (In Stock)
Cantina Del Pino Barbaresco 2012 Cantina Del Pino Barbaresco 2012

A bit of a stunner for anyone who ever thought Barbaresco couldn't be fun to drink young. Just lovely with fine purity and dark cherry fruit with floral and smoke accents. Not showy but very pretty and flavorful with sneaky intensity and a very long finish.  Decant now or enjoy from 2020 or so.

"Cantina del Pino's 2012 Barbaresco is a gorgeous and very reasonably priced top-tier Barbaresco. Sweet red cherry, kirsch, wild flowers, mint and chalk are all bright and delineated throughout. Even after all of the highs and lows of the growing season, the 2012 has turned out to be a pretty classic wine. The radiant, open-knit fruit, bright acidity and beams of supporting tannin result in an impeccably balanced, mid-weight Barbaresco that will drink well with minimal cellaring."  Vinous (Galloni) 92 points

"Like all of the Barbarescos from Cantina del Pino, the 2012 Barbaresco is released one year later than required. That extra time in the bottle serves this wine well to build the aromatic profile and intensity of the bouquet. Overall, this is a feminine expression that boasts a silky presentation and a streamlined personality."Wine Advocate 92 points

Dom Des Malandes Chablis 1er Cru Fourchaume VV 2015 Product #31847 (In Stock)
Dom Des Malandes Chablis 1er Cru Fourchaume VV 2015 Dom Des Malandes Chablis 1er Cru Fourchaume VV 2015

Perhaps THE most stellar value of the offering for drinking now and over the next 10 years.  Fourchaume sits on the same slope and to the north of the Grand Crus and often gives glimpses of Grand Cru richness and power. Wonderful Chablis intensity and salty vibrancy here but also a very generous dose of rich, ripe, buttered pear.  Turns stony and showing a touch of wood-induced salty caramel (20% ages in 1-5 year-old barrel) on the long, pure, finish.  Extraordinary value here in a wine that’s almost too delicious today to justify waiting.

"Expressive with wet stones and green fruits. A steely intensity that was missing from their Montmains. On the palate, too, more drive, though less immediate fruit than the Côte de Léchet."  JancisRobinson.com 16.5/20 points

"This is aromatically fresher still with its ripe array of green fruit, citrus, white flower and iodine aromas. Consistent with the nose the seductively textured, round and delicious flavors possess fine freshness, verve and salinity while coating the mouth on the moderately dry but sneaky long finish."Allen Meadows 90 points

Dom Des Malandes Chablis 1er Cru Mont De Millieu 2015 Product #31849 (In Stock)
Dom Des Malandes Chablis 1er Cru Mont De Millieu 2015 Dom Des Malandes Chablis 1er Cru Mont De Millieu 2015

While Fourchaume is more rich and immediately delicious, this could be the better value if you’d like to cellar your Chablis for 3-10 years.  One of the warmer sites in Chablis and, like the Grand Crus, with prime southern exposure, Mont de Milieu gives wines of more body and richness and most other 1er sites.  The richer fruit benefits from a bit more wood (50% of 1-5 years age) to tame the fruit and allow true Chablis minerality and vivacity emerge.  Delicious now for the fruit and spice but at its best from 2020.

"A lightly exotic nose of pure white orchard fruit and muscat nuances displays background hints of mineral reduction and seaweed, both of which are picked up by the rich, round, powerful and concentrated flavors that possess an opulent but balanced finish that exhibits slightly better depth and length. Worth a look."Allen Meadows 91 points

"The 2015 Chablis 1er Cru Mont de Milieu, which was aged half and half in oak barrels and stainless steel, has a strict and tightly wound bouquet with apple blossom and cold limestone scents, both well defined. The palate is crisp and fresh with apple peeling, fresh pear and a touch of herbaceousness. But I like the tension and focus here, surprisingly reserved for a 2015 and benefiting from superior tension and terroir-expression on the finish."Wine Advocate 91 points

Guillon Bourgogne Rouge Les Graviers 2015 Product #31926 (In Stock)
Guillon Bourgogne Rouge Les Graviers 2015 Guillon Bourgogne Rouge Les Graviers 2015

Les Graviers is one of the best Pinot Noir vineyards lying just outside the bounds of village Chambolle Musigny.  Both Frederic Magnien and Domaine Ponsot base their Bourgogne rouge on Graviers, with Ponsot’s usually selling for $45-$55 (if you can find it).  Jean Michel used to use the young vines from this vineyard for cremant, but now that they're older, all the fruit from Les Graviers goes into make one brilliant Bourgogne Rouge – a wine that’s very much a “baby Chambolle Musigny!”

The combination of nicely maturing vines and 2015’s fantastic ripeness gave Jean-Michel and Alexis fruit much more in line with a good Village level Chambolle site than just Bourgogne, so they treated this like village wine:  4 weeks in the fermenter for deep extraction and then aging in 100% top-quality new oak.  Folks, this is “blow you away” Bourgogne Pinot Noir.  My note from the cellar last month:  “Wow – massive plushness and richness and depth.  Spectacular dark fruit (cherry, raspberry) with deep spice, earth and smoke.  Firm. Very long, very delicious.”

Outstanding Top Value. A deft application of wood sets off the ripe and fresh red berry fruit and earth-suffused nose. There is fine volume and concentration to the rich, plump and round flavors that possess very fine depth and length compared to what is typical for the genre. Worth considering.”Allen Meadows 87-89 points

Castello La Leccia Chianti Classico Riserva Giuliano 2013 Product #32013 (In Stock)
Castello La Leccia Chianti Classico Riserva Giuliano 2013 Castello La Leccia Chianti Classico Riserva Giuliano 2013

Full confession – we’re not normally fans of Italian “Riserva” wines.  Even though most use the estate’s best fruit, the extra time in oak (up to a year) often dries the wine out, kills the fruit, and gives sticky, drying, tannins that rob the wines of all their fun.  Here, though, we have a Chianti Classico Riserva that soars above the norm in every way!

Francesco Daddi made the first vintage in 2012 in honor of his father, Giuland.  It’s built on the estate’s best Sangiovese plus a splash of Malvasia Nero – a favorite blend of Giuland’s – and given 18 months in French oak followed by extra time in concrete tank and bottle.  The aromas are sexy and sophisticated, with deep cherry/berry fruit framed by notes of fresh earth, sweet spice, and light herb.  There’s a ton going on in your mouth, but the bold burst of black raspberry fruit pulses through the layers of tobacco, spice, smoke and fresh flower flavors.  The fruit keeps on pumping through the long, complex, and firm finish in a wine that has the structure to age a decade and shine now with rich, dry-aged, beef.
