Charles Clement Champagne Brut Tradition NV Product #31401 (In Stock)
Charles Clement Champagne Brut Tradition NV Charles Clement Champagne Brut Tradition NV

This small cooperative winery in the heart of Champagne has struck gold with this cuvee- and "yellow label gold" at that.  Because the Charles Clement Brut Tradition is the kind of wine that will thrill anyone who loves Champagne's most famous "yellow label" (which is actually orange) bottle.  It's a blend of 50% Pinot Noir for richness, 30% Chardonnay for toasty vibrancy, and 20% Pinot Meunier for depth and body.

With 30% reserve wines (base wines from previous vintages) and plenty of time on the lees, it's loaded with crowd-pleasing class.  Small, persistent, bubbles lift aromas of brioche, toasted nuts, apple and stone fruit from the glass.  Then, round and generous on the palate with nice creaminess and plenty of apple, pear, hazelnut and toast flavors that flow on nicely through the fine finish.  A very, very, fine Champagne value.

Accordini Amarone Classico Le Bessole 2011 Product #32373 (In Stock)
Accordini Amarone Classico Le Bessole 2011 Accordini Amarone Classico Le Bessole 2011

Accordini’s Amarone from the famous Cru (vineyard) of Le Bessole has all the heft and power you love in Amarone with just a touch of elegance and freshness from higher-altitude vineyards.  It’s got all the power and structure you’d expect from Amarone to go along with spicy dark fruits like dried cranberry, currants, cherries, and more.  But, instead of the plodding heaviness, prune-like flavors, and vinegar-like volatile acidity Amarone can fall prey to, this is fresh, clean, and very pure.  Spicy fruit, chocolaty richness, and an intense, spicy, and dry finish make this a great match for grilled pork tenderloin, baby back ribs, or even a well-marbled steak.  Compare it to wine costing $50-$75 or more – you’ll be convinced!

“Aromas of ripe raspberry jam, plum, menthol and baking spice lead the nose on this bold red. The dense palate delivers raisin, dried black cherry and licorice alongside assertive, close-grained tannins that grip the finish.” Wine Enthusiast 90 points

“An elegant red, with aromatic violet, citrus peel and spice notes leading to wild cherry and black raspberry fruit, layered with supple tannins and a note of fresh, loamy earth that lingers on the chewy finish. Drink now through 2026.” Wine Spectator 91 points

Clua Milliennium Tinto 2013 Product #32666 (In Stock)
Clua Milliennium Tinto 2013 Clua Milliennium Tinto 2013

SAVE 40%!  In this fascinatingly delicious wine, Xavier Clua has captured the changable essence of his Terra Alta Vineyards.  Vineyards that move from clay, to rocky chalk, to lightly sandy across his 450-500 meter site.  Days and nights range from baking hot to bracing chill.  And his grapes here start with classic Garnatxa Negra (Garnacha) and pull in complements of Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah.  Put all that together with a year in 50/50 new/second use barrel, and you get a wine that has a lot to say - and says it with power and charm.

On first pour and sniff, you can tell this is going to be a wild ride!  Aromas of deep roasted black fruits - plums, berries, cherries - turn rich and deep with air and are framed by scents of subtle spice, light balsamic and a hint of roasted meat.  In the mouth, this is one of those wines that walks a tightly focused path between rich indulgence and intense verve.  Deeply expressive flavors of wild blackberry, black currant, raspberry, licorice and balsamic are lifted across the palate by a burst of tangy blackberry juice, fresh blood orange, and fresh floral notes.  A beguiling hint of walnut runs under the mouthwatering finish where fresh picked berry and blood orange flavors ride over fine-grained tannins.

Or at least that's what I got from my tasting.  The truth is that this is a wine in motion, and what you'll smell, taste, and feel from it will shift and evolve over the hours you have it in your glass.  A joy to drink now and plenty of potential to improve through 2023.

Fleuriet Renaissance Sancerre Les Grandes Marnes 2014 Product #31962 (In Stock)
Fleuriet Renaissance Sancerre Les Grandes Marnes 2014 Fleuriet Renaissance Sancerre Les Grandes Marnes 2014

Old vines (30-60 years) and a mix of Kimmeridgian marl and Silex flint give this fantastic intensity.  The incredibly sophisticated use of large (about 3x the size of a Burgundy barrel) new French oak (60%) transforms that intensity into pure luxurious delight.

It's explosively aromatic, with scents of sliced pineapple, grapefruit flesh and peel, smoky gunflint, and fresh cut grass just jumping out of the glass.  In the mouth it starts like biting into a fresh, perfectly ripe, kumquat - a pop of citrus oil, followed by fleshy orange-tinged citrus fruit and juice and a just-right bite of bitter pith.  A dusting of black pepper and creamy touch of Meyer lemon confit adds complexity as do subtle notes of fresh tarragon and chive.  You don't really experience the oak as "oak" - instead it just rounds the texture and intensifies the Silex gunflint minerality.  Take a sip and wait 90-120 seconds - you'll still be tasting and savoring this beauty.  A remarkable, delicious, supremely sophisticated wine to enjoy tonight and over the next 5 years.

Amalie Robert Pinot Meunier 2015 Product #32607 (In Stock)
Amalie Robert Pinot Meunier 2015 Amalie Robert Pinot Meunier 2015

A "failed" experiment (well, "abandoned," anyway) with sparkling wine left Ernie Pink and Dena Drews with a few acres of Pinot Meunier that's just too good to abandon.  So they make this delicious red from it - based on the huge 92 point rating for the 2014, it's one of the finest still red Pinot Meuniers in the world!

The 2015 picks up where that stunner left off. This is a pretty wine in the glass, with a translucent red brick color you can easily see through.  Inviting aromas of red cherry, sweet strawberry, and candied rose petal pull you in to ripe, vibrant, flavors of bitter cherry, crushed raspberry, and a beguiling floral/anise note on the finish.  Nice tension between the sweet fruit and tart acids and just enough fine tannin to make this easy to enjoy with all kinds of food.

The 1503 on the label celebrates the year the winery's historic manor house was constructed.  This blends 64% Pinot Noir, 32% Chardonnay and just 4%  Pinot Meunier to give a crisp, refreshing, fizz with a nice layer of refinement.

"Aromatic overtones of meadow flowers with just a touch of cotton candy hover over the lemony freshness. The palate balances mellow richness with taut acidity and creates a friendly tension between those poles. There is abundant apple fruit, both tart and sweet and a clean, dry finish that accentuates autolysis."Wine Enthusiast 89 points

Union Sacre Cabernet Sauvignon Le Confident 2016 Product #32833 (In Stock)
Union Sacre Cabernet Sauvignon Le Confident 2016 Union Sacre Cabernet Sauvignon Le Confident 2016

The press is starting to catch up, but so far the prices remain excellent at this tiny winery in California's Central Coast. This is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon from a great 2016 harvest in Santa Barbara’s Happy Canyon AVA.  It delivers genuinely soaring aromas of classic Cabernet fresh black currant, crushed raspberry, sweet spice, and dusty dried herb.  It’s richly textured in the mouth and fully ripe, but remains phenomenally pure, silky and elegant.  Bold flavors of crushed black berries, cassis, spice, tobacco and cedar get an exotic lift of burnt orange peel, filling your mouth through the middle and continuing to pump out and linger over a long, silky  smooth, finish.

"A Cabernet Sauvignon from the Happy Canyon of Santa Barbara, the 2016 Le Confident from Union Sacré offers up sweet aromas of blackberries, herbs and licorice, followed by a medium-bodied, ample and layered palate, with a sweet core of fruit, good balance and a flavorful finish. My only reservation would be that it's a touch jammy, which comes at the expense of some Cabernet varietal character, but it's a tasty and keenly priced wine."Wine Advocate 91 points

Bodegas Alto Moncayo Veraton 2015 Product #33099 (In Stock)
Bodegas Alto Moncayo Veraton 2015 Bodegas Alto Moncayo Veraton 2015

Our favorite vintage of this modern take on old-vine Spanish Garnacha ever.  Australian consulting winemaker Chris Ringland always gets plenty of fruit in his wine, and there's no shortage of sweetly ripe strawberry and cherry here.  But there's also fine freshness, a creamy texture, and captivating finish that just won't quit.  Try this with dishes that have lots of cumin or North African spice and, especially, with grilled lamb.  Fun stuff indeed.

"Expressive aromas of cherry compote, blueberry, lavender and peppery spices. Plush, pliant, round and seamless on the palate, offering smoky blueberry, mineral and dark chocolate flavors complicated by suggestions of candied flowers and licorice. Finishes long and sweet, with soft tannins and repeating spiciness. There's a lot of wine here for the money."  Vinous (Raynolds) 92 points

"Round and juicy, this lively red shows ripe flavors of kirsch and mulled plum, with chocolate and licorice accents. Heady but not heavy, with bright acidity and spicy and floral notes on the finish. Drink now through 2022."Wine Spectator 92 points

Le Macchiole Bolgheri Rosso 2016 Product #33359 (In Stock)
Le Macchiole Bolgheri Rosso 2016 Le Macchiole Bolgheri Rosso 2016

From one of the most important estates in the "super-Tuscan" zone of Bolgheri, this is even better than the 95 point (Suckling) 2015.  A blend of Merlot (50%), Cabernets and Syrah with the Merlot picked early for freshness and the other grapes later for more richness and body. It's all aged in a mixture of cement tanks and neutral wood - so all the rich, creamy texture and deep base notes of earth and spice come entirely from the grapes.  The black cherry and currant fruit are deep and rich but stay fresh and vibrant right on through the very long, silky, fresh finish.  Outstanding wine you can drink tonight or hold for a decade-plus.

Maynard's Port Tawny 20 Year Product #30550 (In Stock)
Maynard's Port Tawny 20 Year Maynard's Port Tawny 20 Year

A great example of what is perhaps the most classic style of “wood aged” or “Tawny” Port.  Winemaker Alvaro van Zeller, formerly winemaker at Quinta do Noval, blends this from Port lots that have aged in barrel about 20 years on average.  Plenty of richness and depth here but also a lively note of burnt orange peel and even a touch of fresh red berry.  A delicious value!

"Maynard’s is a brand from Alvaro van Zeller of Barão de Vilar. This 20-year-old is lush in its sweetness, with candied orange peel scents and ripe strawberry flavors that evaporate into a warm finish, lasting on scents of glazed chestnuts. A simple and delicious Tawny."Wine & Spirits 90 points

"The 20 Years Old Tawny Port (Maynard's) comes in at 109 grams per liter of residual sugar. A nice step up on the 10 Year Old Maynard's, also reviewed, this adds some weight, but more importantly, concentration of flavor--those old, classic Tawny nuances. Very pleasing, yet easy to drink, this is a charming 20 that should be available at a nice price."Wine Advocate 90 points

Guillon Bourgogne Blanc Chardonnay 2016 Product #33192 (In Stock)
Guillon Bourgogne Blanc Chardonnay 2016 Guillon Bourgogne Blanc Chardonnay 2016

Best ever here. Soaring aromas of glorious ripe fruit – peach, apple, pear, clementine – plus notes of farm fresh butter and hazelnut.  All around the fruit, sweet and savory herb (mint, chervil), spice, a touch of vanilla bean and a hint of salinity that’s pretty surprising given the lovely ripeness.  While the fine ripe fruit flavors show up in the flavors, “ripe” is the last word you’d use to describe the texture.  This is simply the most pure, finessed and vibrant white Jean-Michel and Alexis Guillon have ever made.  Plenty of flavor intensity and depth here but a mouth feel that’s both creamy and laser-tight in focus as it glides across your palate.  The beautiful lemon, stone fruit, mint and cultured butter flavors shine in the middle but really pop on a fantastic, creamy and round, finish that lingers on and on.

The 100% new oak did its job in adding aromatic complexity, polish and finesse and then receded completely into the wine, leaving a stunningly pure, refined, wine for you to enjoy now and years to come. Just 100 cases made and 50 imported.

Dow's 10 Year Tawny Port Product #7247 (In Stock)
Dow's 10 Year Tawny Port Dow's 10 Year Tawny Port

Dow’s winemakers pick lots every vintage to go into the Tawny Port program.  The finished Port goes into large barrels and ages slowly, gradually acquiring a nutty, caramel, character and gaining an orangey/tawny color.  Dow’s 10-Year Tawny is made from a blend of these ports that are average approximately 10 years of age - although the “10-Year” designation indicates style more than actual wine age.  Dow’s 10-Year Tawny is a classic - orange peel, caramel, honey, nuts, and dried fig flavors swirl around a hint of red berry fruit.  Once again, the classic Dow dry finish keeps the wine refreshing.
