Abbazia Di Novacella Kerner Praepositus 2016 Product #32362 (In Stock)
Abbazia Di Novacella Kerner Praepositus 2016 Abbazia Di Novacella Kerner Praepositus 2016

The Kerner grape was created in 1929 as a cross between Riesling and Trollinger (Schiava) by a German researcher attempting to strengthen Riesling’s resistance to late spring frosts.  A bit of a failure in Germany, it reached Italy’s mountainous Alto Adige region in the 1970s to be planted in high-altitude sites where frost regularly damaged Sylvaner, Muller-Thurgau, and other white grapes.  Largely due to the success at this monastery with 850 years of winegrowing experience, Alto Adige Kerner earned its own DOC designation in 1993.

Kerner Praepositus is from fruit growing a nearly a half-mile altitude on 25-40% gradient sloped vineyards running up the western edge of the Dolomites.  In 2016, it’s even more stunning than the Wine Enthusiast 95 point 2015.  Bold and heady aromas of peach, orange zest, green apple, ginger, and smoked herb really burst from the glass.  On the palate, it starts broad and fleshy with deep apricot, citrus, and apple fruit with just a hint of raspberry framed by zingy notes of tangerine zest, ginger, and a hint of spearmint. Then, as the flavors completely fan out, WHAM comes a burst of crushed salty stone that propels the stone fruit, ginger and mint flavors through a long finish you'll still be tasting a minute or more later.  A beautiful wine to drink now – 2020 or so.

Abbazia Di Novacella Lagrein Reserva Praepositus 2013 Product #32075 (In Stock)

Alto Adige's Lagrein grape gives dark, savory, wines with a whiff of licorice and firm tannins.  Here perfectly ripe fruit is allowed to mature and soften a tad for 18 months in barrique to round off tannins and gain an extra layer of smokey complexity.  A fine match for earthy pork or lamb dishes or even salty ham!

"Aromas and flavors of spice, berry and cedar. Plenty of wood showing now but should come around nicely. Medium body, linear tannins and acidity. Drink or hold." James Suckling 92 points

"This opens with aromas of blackberry, ground pepper and a whiff of graphite. The juicy savory, palate offers ripe black cherry, clove and licorice alongside fresh acidity and chewy tannins. Drink through 2021."Wine Enthusiast 90 points
