- Bruni Poggio d' Elsa Cabernet Sangiovese 2015 Product #31873 (In Stock)
Winemaker Marco Bruni and his siblings named this “Super Tuscan” red for their mom, Elsa – could it be anything other than fantastic? The wine is from Tuscany’s Maremma region, a slice of western Tuscany that gets all of the brilliant “Tuscan sun” that makes Chianti so famous plus cooling breezes from the nearby sea. It’s sometimes called the “California of Italy” because while Sangiovese (the main grape of Chianti and Brunello) is great here, so is Napa Valley’s Cabernet Sauvignon. Here, the Bruni’s blend equal parts Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon and age about 30% of the wine in French oak casks.
In the monumentally great 2015 harvest, the result is a fantastically versatile, utterly delicious, cross between New World Cabernet and Tuscan Chianti. The Cabernet shows in the wine’s richness of texture, length on the palate, and bold aromas and flavors of black currant, tobacco and herb. Sangiovese shines through with a juicy black cherry lift, hints of fresh flowers, and a food friendly finish of dark fruit, juicy acids, and lightly grippy tannins. You’ll savor this with burgers, lamb or steak, gulp it with pizza, pasta, or mushrooms, sip it happily on its own, and – at these prices – be happy to share it with a crowd.
