Dom de Martinolles Pinot Noir Pays d'Oc 2016 Dom de Martinolles Pinot Noir Pays d'Oc 2016

You don't think of "Pinot Noir" and "Languedoc" as going together, but this delicious value suggests you should!  Actually, Pinot Noir was one of the most important red grapes of the vineyards around Carcassonne in the 15th Century before more productive Grenache, Carignan, etc. arrived.  Grown on limestone, Martinolles's vines are giving exciting wine at age 10, starting with deep, ripe, almost tactile blackberry and red raspberry fruit.  The texture is a bit velvety and weight nicely mouthfilling, while the accents of cocoa powder add complexity to the lingering crushed berry fruit.  A fine value Pinot, for sure, but one with enough heft to work like a lighter Cotes du Rhone as well.  Stupendous value.
