“AiAiAi” is the kind of thing you say with a smile when something surprising happens, and tasting Silvia Puig’s 2015 “baby” Priorat and then seeing the very reasonable price certainly qualifies!  Tiny production – just 3,216 bottles in 2015.

I don’t think I can improve upon my note from our first taste of 2015 AiAiAi:  “Even though it's dead young, the nose is already giving with bold aromas of roasted red berries - raspberry, strawberry - dark red flowers and a big dose of Priorat's signature warm slate.  The flavors are classic Priorat, too - actually, classic $50-$70 Priorat.  Super rich roasted red fruit, sweet spice, a hint of vanilla bean, and a bit of cracked pepper with a texture that enters pure and precise, expands to fully coat the inside of your mouth and then draws back into clear focus with delicious, ripe, chewy, tannins.  Finish goes on with raspberry jam, slate, and more lingering.  Not a trace of heat.  What a delicious wine!”

1,171 bottles made; 804 imported.  The 2015 edition of Silvia Puig’s white Grenache was easily the best wine from this tricky grape I’d ever tasted.  The 2016 edition is better.  A warm, very dry, season pushed yields and berry sizes down with corresponding gains in both richness and structure and the combination of fermenting in open top oak barrels and aging in stainless steel accentuates both.

The best word to describe the 2016 edition is one I’d never thought to use for Garnaxta Blanca:  precision.  Fragrances and flavors of white peach, fresh pear, tart pineapple, sliced almond and just a hint of honey jump from the glass and coat your mouth.  Both the palate and finish are wondrously long, with a dusty slate minerality appearing in the middle and gaining strength and breadth on the mouthwatering, pineapple and tangerine, finish.  I’m really not sure how this could possibly be better – although that’s what I thought about the 2015, too.

Silvia Puig's 2015 Garnaxta Blanca starts with very old bush-trained vines growing on small terraces running up and down Priorat’s jumbled hills.  The vines poke out of a cover of broken red and brown slate with flecks of mica called “llicorella” that gives the fruit an almost salty, minerally, feel.  Hot, sunny, days drive ripening while cool, clear, nights maintain freshness.  Fermentation and aging in large French oak casks adds roundness while time in clay amphora gives a portion of the wine a rich, exotic, feel.

The 2015 is very young right now and while it’s already delicious, I think it will be better still this Fall and through 2020+.  Big aromas of green pineapple, apricot, fresh peach, fennel frond and salty stone carry on through a luxuriously textured, mouth-coating, palate.  Notes of spice, orange blossom, and anise emerge for even more complexity as the wine sits in your mouth – and it does sit there for a while as this beauty shows unbelievable palate and finishing length.  A burst of fruity acidity and loads of salty stone minerality bring freshness at the end.  To call it “the best White Grenache in the world” is actually faint praise:  this is a great, great, wine that delivers deep and profound satisfaction.

300 bottles made; 150 imported.  Here’s a rarity at multiple levels – you don’t find many dry wines made from Sherry’s choice of sweet wine grapes.  And you certainly don’t find any I know of this great – and won’t find much of this one anywhere!  She managed to source just enough grapes to fill one barrel with juice for fermentation and 4 months aging before finishing the wine in stainless steel.

If you remember Silvia’s PX from her former Vinedos de Ithaca estate, this represents a stylistic change, emphasizing freshness and vigor over richness and almost oily texture.  Fantastic aromas of exotic flowers, white peach, grainy pear, fennel frond and lemon verbena with similar flavors that almost quiver and vibrate with energy in the mouth.  Plenty of depth and intensity here leading to a long, supremely fresh, finish of pear, peach, crunchy fennel, lemon and more lingering on and on.  A stellar match for sushi, shrimp salad, cold scallops, or summer nights.

Silvia Puig intends her Black Label cuvee to be rounder, more supple, and easier to appreciate young than the more structured Classic wine.  In 2014, there are 1,340 bottles of this roughtly 60% Garnatxa (both Negre and Peluda, aka “Hairy Grenache”) and 40% Carinyena from old vineyards scattered across Priorat.  She ferments the wine in 300 and 500 liter French oak casks that have had one of the ends removed, and then puts the ends back on to let the wine age for 13 months.

There's always a friendly, chunky, richness to this cuvee and in 2014 that's joined by remarkable poise and precision.  It sings out with bold aromas of dark raspberry, ripe blueberry, and cocoa powder with subtle floral accents.  Mouthfilling and rich on the palate with more dark fruit - plum, raspberry, blackberry - plus deep dark chocolate, crushed flower, and a bare hint of cola nut.  I love how the flavors really fan out to cover your palate from side-to-side and how the deep, weighty, richness is matched by sprightly freshness.  The chalky tannins make this an outstanding choice for grilled or roasted meats tonight and for a decade or more.

1,711 bottles made; 600 imported.  This wine has always been good, but in 2015 it takes a big step up to “hoo boy and zowie – gimme more of that right now” status.  Intended to be the more open, ready to enjoy, of Silvia’s two “main” Priorats the 2015 is once again a blend of Garnatxa Negre, Garnatxa Peluda (aka “Hairy Grenache”) and Carinyena from old vineyards scattered across Priorat.  She ferments the wine in 300 and 500 liter French oak casks that have had one of the ends removed, and then puts the ends back on to let the wine age for 13 months.

As always, this is hugely ripe and fleshy and delicious right now (although it’s going to peak in 5-10 years).  But the 2015 adds in astonishing purity, finesse and balance for such a big, boisterous, wine.  Bold aromas of slate and wild blackberry with a touch of spice lead to plump, powerful, flavors of black raspberry, blackberry, wild blueberry, milk chocolate and – of course – crushed slate. The dusty slate and a beam of razor sharp acidity give these big, powerful, flavors shape and definition from front to back, but the rich, ripe, fruit really sings out at the end over perfectly polished tannins.  A fun, wild, ride now but promising even more sophistication with maturity.  Oh – and it’s yummy, too

Silvia Puig made just 827 bottles of our favorite all-around Priorat red in the cool, fresh, 2014 vintage.  It's a blend of 65% Garnatxa, 30% Syrah, and 5% Carinyena fermented in open-top 300 liter and 500 liter French oak and then aged 13 months in those same barrels (with the tops back on).  The vintage gives this more energy and zip than previous releases, but there's no shortage of pure Priorat power.

Big, classically Priorat, aromas of spice, chocolate, blackberry, raspberry and baked plum really jump from the glass.  In the mouth it's rich and ripe with oodles of blue-black fruit, more chocolate and spice, and accents of tangy blueberry, blood orange and pomegranate.  Chewy and dense right on through the very long finish with notes of blackberry, plum, and flambéed cherries lingering on and on.  This will drink young and repay 10-15 years in cellar.

715 bottles made, 384 imported.  As in 2011 and 2012, Silvia’s “Classic” Priorat is, well, “Classic.”  A blend of 65% Garnatxa, 30% Syrah, and 5% Carinyena fermented in open-top 300 liter and 500 liter French oak and then aged 13 months in those same barrels (with the tops back on).  It’s very young now and still a little shy on the nose and compacted on the palate, although the intensity, balance, and velvety texture are all easy to appreciate now.  My note from first tasting with Jonas:

“Dark and spicy fruit, long and rich, amazing power and then amazing finesse.  A “wow wine” with loads of dark, rich, fruit, powerful tannins, and a generous helping of Priorat graphite and slate.  Shockingly supple and sophisticated for its size.  What terrior (sense of place) is.  All in balance.”  Give this 2 or 3 years and enjoy for 20.

1,215 bottles made; 600 bottles and 20 magnums imported.  The “White Label” is Silvia’s flagship and this year’s model harks back to the simply stellar 2011 vintage that was our introduction to the ENV project.  It’s a blend of Garnatxa, Syrah and a splash of Carinyena fermented in open-top 300 liter and 500 liter French oak and then aged 13 months in those same barrels (with the tops back on).  Sounds simple, but that hides the intense amount of work that goes into this wine, from selecting the very best French oak, to meticulously sorting the fruit of ultra-old vines, to manually punching down the fermentations and then coaxing out the best of each lot from barrel to bottle.

So what’s the 2015 like?  Jonas Gustafsson, Silvia’s importer, sums it up nicely:  “This vintage is all about class, concentration and power!”  You’re going to need a little patience and time here, but swirling unveils a profound nose of dark fruit, sweet spice, crumbled baker’s chocolate and a generous dose of hot, smoky, slate.  In the mouth, a wildly complex ride featuring torrents of blackberry and black raspberry fruit, subtle currents of lead pencil, chocolate and spice, and bold gusts of dusty blue slate.  It’s at once velvety textured and immensely powerful, with huge drive through a long, blue/black fruit, iron ore and spice finish.  Decant and grill up some lamb right now.  Or in 2025.  Or 2035.  Etc.

No point in overselling this one, because Silvia made only 654 bottles and Jonas only got 300 (and both he and I have kept some back for ourselves).  “Quasi Centenaria” roughly translates to “about 100 years old,” a reference to this gnarly old Carignan vineyard planted right around 1919.  The vines grow on two steep, rock-covered, slopes, one facing north and the other south, located in the heart of Priorat.  Given the age of the vines, the lack of water, extreme heat, and absence of nutrients in the soil, these vines struggle to give 300 grams of fruit per bush – enough for about two-thirds of a bottle per vine.

The wine is rich and long and astonishing, not so much for its intensity of blue/black fruit, chocolate and spice, which you’d expect from such old vines growing in a place like this, as it is for the amazing freshness.  It’s youthfully closed now – tasting it reminds me of trying to understand young Guigal La Las – but you can sense the depth of fruit and appreciate the “iron fist in velvet glove” power already.  A remarkable wine to leave along until 2020 and drink for decades to come.
