Guillon Cotes De Nuits Villages Queues De Hareng 2014 Product #31356 (In Stock)
Guillon Cotes De Nuits Villages Queues De Hareng 2014 Guillon Cotes De Nuits Villages Queues De Hareng 2014

Just Jean-Michel’s fourth vintage from this fine vineyard located a touch south of Nuits Saint Georges, and easily the very best yet.  Oodles of raspberry, coffee, and red currant aromas and flavors and a silky, sophisticated, texture.  It’s rare to see a wine from a more “humble” site like this have the stuffing to benefit from 100% new oak, but the 2014 handles it with ease.  Delicious now and able to develop through 2024+.  Outstanding value here.

Outstanding Top Value "A discreet touch of wood sets off the ripe, fresh and complex nose that consists of plum, earth, violet and plenty of earth character. There is terrific intensity to the detailed, sleek and delineated middle weight flavors that are also endowed with relatively fine-grained tannins that shape the lingering finish that evidences a hint of bitter cherry. This is an excellent example of the appellation and worth your interest."Allen Meadows 89-91 points

Guillon Fixin Hauts Crais 2014 Product #31357 (In Stock)
Guillon Fixin Hauts Crais 2014 Guillon Fixin Hauts Crais 2014

Jean-Michel's very first vintage in this vineyard perched near the top of the hill overlooking the village of Fixin.  A strict green harvest brought yields down to 30 hl/ha (very low in this "value" village) to give the wine the kind of concentration and body Jean-Michel is known for.  Aging in 100% new French oak provided roundness, but the oak flavors are buried in the fresh cherry/berry fruit and give just the nicest touch of spice.  Round and full of fruit and softly supple on  the juicy finish, this is an outstanding Burgundy to enjoy young and will improve for 5+ years.

"A discreet application of wood serves as a backdrop for the pretty plum, violet, earth and slightly gamy aromas. Here too there is a relatively sleek mouth feel to the vibrant and overtly stony middle weight flavors that display a mild touch of austerity on the balanced and refreshing finish."Allen Meadows 87-90 points

Guillon Gevrey Chambertin Cuvee Alexis 2014 Product #31360 (In Stock)
Guillon Gevrey Chambertin Cuvee Alexis 2014 Guillon Gevrey Chambertin Cuvee Alexis 2014

Co-winemaker Alexis Guillon's cuvee is always a bit more elegant than the Domaine's other Village wines, but still has the concentration and depth that only comes from 60+ year-old vines. This is the best vintage for this wine I can recall and the best rating from Burghound, too.  Another outstanding value in classic Gevrey Chambertin.  Best from 2019 - 2029.

Outstanding Top Value " A moderately wooded nose also exhibits a touch of menthol on the classic Gevrey aromas of earth, underbrush, game and cool dark berry fruit. There is excellent mid-palate density to the intense, robust and muscular flavors that coat the palate on the slightly rustic and impressively long finish. Worth considering."Allen Meadows 89-91 points

Guillon Gevrey Chambertin Cuvee Alexis 2012 Guillon Gevrey Chambertin Cuvee Alexis 2012

Co-winemaker Alexis Guillon's cuvee is always a bit more elegant than the Domaine's other Village wines, but still has the concentration and depth that only comes from 60+ year-old vines. This is the best vintage for this wine I can recall and the Burghound score is too low.  An outstanding value for now - 2022.

"While the wood is not invisible there is better aromatic complexity present on the dark currant, earth, sauvage and plum suffused nose. There is fine detail to the mineral-inflected medium weight flavors that possess excellent phenolic maturity to the supporting tannic spine, all wrapped in a robust, powerful and impressively long finish. I like the concentration and if this can add a bit more length it should merit the top of my projected range."Allen Meadows 88-91 points

Guillon Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes 2012 Product #28983 (In Stock)
Guillon Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes 2012 Guillon Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes 2012

From 50-90 year-old vines, this is always the most powerful and complex of Jean-Michel's Village level wines.  The essence of Gevrey-Chambertin here and the structure and balance to develop beautifully in cellar.

"Outstanding Top Value. Here the wood treatment is much more discreet with its cool and pure nose of wild and mixed dark berries, pungent earth and plenty of sauvage character. There is excellent intensity and drive to the overtly mineral-driven middle weight flavors that possess excellent volume and phenolic maturity before concluding in a saline, long and ever-so-mildly austere finish. This is well worth considering."Allen Meadows 89-91 points

Guillon Gevrey-Chambertin Vielles Vignes 2013 Product #30035 (In Stock)
Guillon Gevrey-Chambertin Vielles Vignes 2013 Guillon Gevrey-Chambertin Vielles Vignes 2013

Always one of Jean-Michel’s – and importer Olivier Daubresse’s! – favorite cuvees, I really cannot imagine how you wouldn’t guess very good 1er cru when tasting this blind.  It’s a powerful wine that can be enjoyed young for the rich, almost dense, fruit and will add complex earthy/iron ore notes as it matures.  Drink young with air and food or enjoy from 2023-2033 to see all this has to offer.  Perhaps the most outstanding value of this offering.

"Outstanding Top Value. In contrast to the Cuvée Galland this displays buckets of classic Gevrey character with its beautifully complex aromas of game, underbrush, pungent earth and that telltale sauvage quality on the assorted dark berry fruit scents. There is excellent volume and mid-palate concentration to the middle weight plus flavors that possess equally good complexity on the extract-rich, powerful and beautifully well-balanced finish. This is an old school Gevrey villages that will require plenty of patience but if you have it then this is a terrific choice. Highly recommended for the patient." Allen Meadows 89-92 points

Guillon Gevrey Chambertin Vielles Vignes 2014 Guillon Gevrey Chambertin Vielles Vignes 2014

Always one of Jean-Michel’s – and importer Olivier Daubresse’s! – favorite cuvees, I really cannot imagine how you wouldn’t guess very good 1er cru when tasting this blind.  It’s a powerful wine that can be aprecied now for the dense fruit and palate-coating richness but will need time to mellow and open to show earthy, iron ore, minerality.  Hold it until 2024 and enjoy through 2034 and longer.

Outstanding Top Value "I would describe this as moderately wooded as well with its notes of menthol and dense fruited nose of plum, dark berries, spice and abundant earth scents. There is outstanding richness and concentration to the notably powerful and serious middle weight plus flavors that deliver excellent persistence on the rustic finale. This old school effort won't win any awards for refinement but it is a first-rate Gevrey villages that really saturates the palate with dry extract. Highly recommended provided that you have the patience to give it at least 6 to 8 years of cellaring."Allen Meadows 89-92 points

Guillon Gevrey-Chambertin Pere Galland 2015 Product #32512 (In Stock)
Guillon Gevrey-Chambertin Pere Galland 2015 Guillon Gevrey-Chambertin Pere Galland 2015

Jean Michel makes several different Gevrey village cuvves, but this one – named for Rene Galland, the man who helped him learn to make wine – shines especially brightly in 2015.  One swirl of the glass and you know you're about to drink a Domaine Guillon red Burgundy from a great vintage.  Smoke, earth, spice, and iron aromas envelop the dark and rich fruit.  Then, on the palate, there's the muscularity Gevrey is supposed to give with a level of concentration, class and drive that Village-level Gevrey almost never attains.  For all the ripeness of the raspberry and dark cherry fruit, this shows amazing finesse and purity through the long, spicy, finish.  Decant now, better from 2020, great through 2030 and beyond.

"A pungent nose displays notes of reduction and wood toast. By contrast there is fine freshness to the super-rich and highly seductive medium weight flavors that coat the mouth with dry extract on the balanced and notably more complex finale. This is a big villages that will need a few years of cellar time first."Allen Meadows 89-91 points

Guillon Gevrey Chambertin 1er Cru Les Champeaux 2014 Product #31362 (In Stock)
Guillon Gevrey Chambertin 1er Cru Les Champeaux 2014 Guillon Gevrey Chambertin 1er Cru Les Champeaux 2014

As it has for the past few years, Champeaux stands out among Guillon's 2014 1er Cru wines for its purity of fruit and beautiful texture.  Much more open and accessible than Champonnets today, Champeax impresses with its blend of ripe dark fruit, classic Gevrey earth and iron-ore, and hints of floral elegance.  Approachable now, better from 2021 - 2029+.

Outstanding "A cool, pure and restrained nose speaks of red currant, plum, earth and a hint of the sauvage. There is lovely detail to the sleek and beautifully refined middle weight flavors that retain a fine sense of delineation before terminating in a balanced, classy and mineral-inflected finish. Textbook Champeaux."Allen Meadows 91-93 points

Guillon Morey Saint Denis 1er Cru La Riotte 2015 Product #32511 (In Stock)
Guillon Morey Saint Denis 1er Cru La Riotte 2015 Guillon Morey Saint Denis 1er Cru La Riotte 2015

Always the easiest to taste young of Jean-Michel's 1er Crus, the 2015 Morey Saint Denis marries lovely depth and richness to, once again, a fanstically silky, pure, texture.  The 100% new oak Burghound comments on is already being absorbed into the wine with delights as much for it's velvety pure texture as it does for the profound fruit and sweet spice.  If you normally like this, buy it.  If you aren't already a fan, this will make you one.  Best from 2020 - 2035.

"Ample wood fights somewhat with the otherwise wonderfully fresh and bright red cherry, floral and softly earth-scented aromas. There is both good vibrancy and refinement to the lightly mineral-inflected middle weight flavors that possess a lovely mouth feel though the wood is very much present on the finish. The underlying material is probably sufficient to eat the wood and my predicted range assumes that it will."Allen Meadows 90-92 points

Guillon Gevrey Chambertin 1er Cru Champonnets 2015 Product #32514 (In Stock)
Guillon Gevrey Chambertin 1er Cru Champonnets 2015 Guillon Gevrey Chambertin 1er Cru Champonnets 2015

While Champonnets isn't Guillon's "best" wine (because there's a reason the Grand Crus are "Grand"!), it does brilliantly represent what this estate is all about.  Despite perching on the same hill as Grand Cru Ruchottes-Chambertin, the vineyard's northeastern exposure gives most growers lighter, less robust, wines than other 1ers.  Jean-Michel farms this site harder than any other grower, though, making dozens of pruning, trimming, thinning, and de-leafing passes throughout the season to nurture his small yields of berries to perfect ripeness. This is outstanding Gevrey that will shine brightest after 2023.

"Outstanding. A toasty nose offers up notes of dark currant, earth, game and a hint of forest floor. There is excellent richness to the round, velvety and muscular flavors that exude a subtle minerality on the lingering and firm finish. This needs a few years to develop better depth but the material is good enough that more complexity should develop."Allen Meadows 90-92 points

Guillon Marsannay Clos Des Portes 2014 1.5l Product #31369 (In Stock)
Guillon Marsannay Clos Des Portes 2014 1.5l Guillon Marsannay Clos Des Portes 2014 1.5l

A stunning bottle of handcrafted red Burgundy that will delight fans of ripe Russian River or warm vintage Willamette Valley Pinot today and satisfy the most demanding Burgundy fan for years to come.  Jean Michel Guillon purchased this small vineyard about 10 years ago and his hard work has transformed its 30-40 year-old vines into something very special indeed.  He harvests less than 30 hectoliters per hectare of perfectly ripe fruit here – much lower yields than are allowed in Grand Cru vineyards!  And, he treats it like “Grand Cru” wine, too, aging it for 16 months in all new Bertomieu French oak barrels.  Decant it now or hold through 2024.

"Mild reduction pushes what appears to be ripe fruit to the background. Otherwise there is good verve to the racy, intense and well-delineated flavors that don't possess the same mid-palate concentration but are persistent and well-balanced. This could also be approached young if desired."Allen Meadows 87-89 points

"Generous but not dominant wood can be found on the ripe yet cool red berry, sauvage and earth-scented nose. The rich, suave and voluminous but well-detailed flavors possess a beguiling texture before concluding in a lingering finish that displays the classic youthful Fixin austerity. Once again this offers fine quality for its level."Allen Meadows 88-91 points

Guillon Gevrey Chambertin 1er Cru Petite Chapelle 2014 Product #31364 (In Stock)
Guillon Gevrey Chambertin 1er Cru Petite Chapelle 2014 Guillon Gevrey Chambertin 1er Cru Petite Chapelle 2014

With the Gevrey Vieilles Vignes, this is one of the most outstanding values in this offering, delivering Grand Cru level ripeness, concentration, and complexity at a price well under many very good 1er Crus. As with the Grand Crus, Jean-Michel ferments Petite Chapelle in a brand-new, open-top, wood fermenter before aging it in the best French oak money can buy. You can begin to peak in on its development in 2021 if you like, but put some away to drink from 2024 to whenever.

Outstanding "Here too there is moderate but not dominant wood setting off the more elegant and airy red and dark pinot aromas that exhibit background nuances of earth, floral and spice. There is a notably finer mouth feel to the even more mineral-inflected middle weight flavors that retain a lovely sense of delineation on the punchy, focused and well-balanced finale."Allen Meadows 91-93 points

Guillon Gevrey Chambertin 1er Cru Petite Chapelle 2015 Guillon Gevrey Chambertin 1er Cru Petite Chapelle 2015

Is this the best Petit Chapelle ever from Guillon?  I'll accept an argument from fans of the 2009, but from none other.  As always, this delivers Grand Cru level ripeness, concentration, and complexity at a price well under many very good 1er Crus from more marketing-oriented producers. As with the Grand Crus, Jean-Michel ferments Petite Chapelle in a brand-new, open-top, wood fermenter before aging it in the best French oak money can buy. You really should wait until 2025 before digging into the majority of your stash, but it tastes so very, very, good now...

"Outstanding. Much more modulated wood and reduction make the nose difficult to assess today. By contrast there is both good vibrancy and freshness to the notably more refined medium weight flavors that also exude a subtle minerality on the super-saline, balanced and impressively long finish. This is also quite refreshing and while it would be infanticide to open one early, this just makes one feel like drinking it. Worth considering."Allen Meadows 91-93 points

Guillon Gevrey Chambertin 1er Cru Champonnets 2013 Magnum Guillon Gevrey Chambertin 1er Cru Champonnets 2013 Magnum

Hoo boy!  As Burghound notes, this will need another 6 or 7 years to “arrive at its full potential,” but it’s nearly impossible to resist right now.  A big "wow" wine that delivers a silky, plush, nose of spice, rich fruit, fresh earth and cocoa.  Then a mouthful of dark fruit, unctuous cocoa butter, spice and cigar tobacco with superb length, plenty of power, but absolutely no excess weight.  This is arguably the wine that most clearly exemplifies Jean Michel’s style and talent and I cannot recommend it highly enough.

"Outstanding. This is one of the ripest wines in the range as the mocha-scented nose displays notes of cassis and black raspberry liqueur notes along with spice, earth and floral wisps. There is good minerality and plenty of earth and sauvage characters on the intense and punch medium-bodied flavors that culminate in a clean and dry (in the best sense) finale that is notably austere at present. I like the depth and balance though note that this muscular effort will definitely require extended cellaring to arrive at its full potential."Allen Meadows 90-93 points

Guillon Grand Cru Mazis Chambertin 2012 Product #28848 (In Stock)
Guillon Grand Cru Mazis Chambertin 2012 Guillon Grand Cru Mazis Chambertin 2012

Jean-Michel got only 2 barrels from his Grand Cru Mazis-Chambertin vineyard in 2012, but what magnificent barrels they were! The wine is so packed with fruit, spice, and minerality that it's hard to believe it could have such an elegant, silky, texture.  Buy as much as you can - while it will show best after 2022, you'll have a hard time leaving it alone that long.

"There is plenty of wood to the pungently reduced nose where none of the underlying fruit elements are visible. The highly energetic medium weight plus flavors brim with both dry extract and mineral elements before terminating in a driving, even explosive finish that displays excellent complexity as well as terrific persistence. This is impressive though note that this will require plenty of cellar time."Allen Meadows 92-94 points

"A pungent nose of strong reduction and wood toast flatten the underlying fruit. This is also a big, powerful and intense effort with excellent mid-palate concentration and plenty of palate coating dry extract that also serves to buffer the extraordinarily firm finish that delivers superb length. Like several of these 2013s this is an old school style of Mazis and it is pointless to buy this unless you have the determination to allow it have at least 10 years of cellaring and it will need every bit of 20 to fully mature.
