A paradox - how can such a fresh, vibrant, red come from the brutally hot Southern Italian DOC of Savuto in Calabria? Elevation (Odoardi's vineyards are at up to 2,000 feet) helps, as does a big dose (45%) of Gaglioppo, the soft and bright grape called Arvino locally. Gaglioppo gives this bright cherry/berry fruit and a soft, round, juicy mid-palate while Aglianico (25%) adds structure and Magliocco Caniino, Greco Nero, and Nerello Cappuccino perfume and complexity. A great pizza, sausage, pasta, grilled food red, especially with a chill.
