Patricia Green Pinot Noir Reserve 2015 Product #31758 (In Stock)
Patricia Green Pinot Noir Reserve 2015 Patricia Green Pinot Noir Reserve 2015

This has been one of the best values in Willamette Valley Pinot Noir for years, but in 2015 it really soars.  This year 75% of the barrels came from sedimentary soils in Ribbon Ridge and Chehalem Mountain AVAs, 15% from Freedom Hill and 15% from volcanic soils in the Dundee Hills.  It’s genuinely lush and a bit showy now with opulent aromas and flavors of crushed black raspberry, dark cherries, exotic flowers, smoke and damp earth.  Mouthfilling and showing a glyceryl richness, but with vivid acids, fine tannins, and no excess of weight.  As Jim and Patty say, “There are seriously great bones here and this wine will stand up to many, many much higher priced bottlings… In short, this wine is a smoking deal!!

"Deep red. Expansive red berry and floral pastille scents and flavors show impressive energy and pick up a hint of smokiness as the wine opens up. Smooth and fleshy but lively as well; a late jolt of white pepper adds spicy bite. Generous but vibrant in character, finishing very long and sweet, with gentle tannins lending shape and subtle grip. This wine delivers exceptional bang for the buck."  Vinous (Raynolds) 91 points

Patricia Green Pinot Noir Volcanic Cuvee 2015 Product #32034 (In Stock)
Patricia Green Pinot Noir Volcanic Cuvee 2015 Patricia Green Pinot Noir Volcanic Cuvee 2015

While Patty Green's best known Estate and Freedom Hill sites are on marine sediment soils, she and co-winemaker Jim Anderson also make some blockbusters from volcanic soils in the Dundee Hills.  This showcases and highlights the dark, smoky, character of these volcanic sites using fruit from Balcombe, Durant, and Weber vineyards.  All Pommard from vines at least 38 years old, this gets a touch of whole cluster fermentation but no new oak to allows the signature of site to shine through.

So, that deep, dark, smoky note you get on the nose and palate?  That's the soil talking (not oak).  Asian spice and purple flower notes add complexity to the intense dark raspberry and black cherry fruit.  For all the ripeness of the old vines and 2015 vintage, this remains vibrant and fresh and finishes with lingering notes of sweet fruit, smoke, spice and fine-grained tannins.  My note from tasting it with Jim Anderson back in March:  "I want to drink this!" 332 cases made.

Patricia Green Pinot Noir Estate Old Vines 2015 Product #32035 (In Stock)
Patricia Green Pinot Noir Estate Old Vines 2015 Patricia Green Pinot Noir Estate Old Vines 2015

One of the best sites in Oregon's most exciting AVA, Ribbon Ridge, Patricia  Green's Estate vineyard sits on Wellsford soils - a marine sediment that's very fine, almost talc-like.  These thin, exceedingly well drained, soils are perfect for older vines that dig their roots down deep to the water and mineral sources below.  This bottling showcases the oldest vines here, own-rooted Pommard clone Pinot planted between 1984 - 1990.

Even in warm, sunny, ripe vintage 2015, these old vines always deliver an amazing streak of minerality on the palate and nose.  The aromas are Burgundian, with dark griotte cherry fruit framed by notes of earth, mineral and spice.  On the palate the wine shows fine grip and intensity, with a rich mouthfeel and plenty of raspberry/cherry fruit plus black pepper spice.  As Vinous said of the 92 point 2014, it's "At once concentrated and nervy, finishing with excellent focus and suave, late-arriving tannins."  Very exciting in 2015.  About 1,000 cases made.

Patricia Green Pinot Noir Freedom Hill Dijon 115 2015 Product #31723 (In Stock)
Patricia Green Pinot Noir Freedom Hill Dijon 115 2015 Patricia Green Pinot Noir Freedom Hill Dijon 115 2015

Patty and Jim make 4 wines from their 5 blocks of Freedom Hill fruit – the full vineyard blend and then small bottlings showcasing each of the three main clones planted there:  Pommard, Coury and Dijon 115.  This comes from vines planted in 2004 and shows about 60% whole cluster fermentation and about 20% new oak.

Dijon 115 is all about aromatics, and you’ll find plenty to sniff and savor here!  Lots of dark black fruit (cherry, raspberry) plus crushed flowers, mocha, licorice and sweet spice.  On the palate, there’s plenty of dark fruit and a captivating strawberry leaf herbal note with more spice, earth and floral notes for complexity.  Plenty of texture on the mid-palate and then a firm, powerful, finish with firm tannins under a finishing gush of fruit and spice.  As Patty and Jim say, “This wine will reward with a long life of aging, but will also be appreciated by fans of intense and muscular Pinots in its youth.”

Patricia Green Pinot Noir Freedom Hill Pommard 2015 Product #32036 (In Stock)
Patricia Green Pinot Noir Freedom Hill Pommard 2015 Patricia Green Pinot Noir Freedom Hill Pommard 2015

As Patty and Jim Anderson say, “This is where our bread is buttered. While there may be an overemphasis on clonal material here in the U.S. vis-à-vis the way things are viewed in Burgundy there is no denying that a) we work with Pommard clone far more than any other clone b) that there is something to Pommard that makes it stand out from the majority of the Dijon clones.”  And never is that more clear than in the great Freedom Hill vineyard where Patty and Jim bottle 4 wines:  a multi-clone blend and individual clonal wines from Dijon 115, Coury Cline, and Pommard.

For the past 2 vintages, the Pommard cuvee from Freedom Hill has earned 93 points from Vinous each year and that (or more) is going to happen again in 2015.  With no whole clusters and about one-third new oak, it's still expressive and exotic on the nose, with scents of rose oil, Asian spice, and smoke that expands with air.  In the mouth it's dense and powerful, with spiced raspberry and mulberry fruit, exotic spice and a touch of cola darkness.  Rich, for sure, but with big drive and cut and firm, building, tannins that promise years of improvement to come.  An exciting, sophisticated, wine.

Patricia Green Pinot Noir Durant Bishop Block 2015 Product #32037 (In Stock)
Patricia Green Pinot Noir Durant Bishop Block 2015 Patricia Green Pinot Noir Durant Bishop Block 2015

In some ways, this is the partner to the Estate Old Vines Pinot.  Where that showcases old-vine Pommard on Ribbon Ridge's talc-like marine sediments, Durant is all about very old-vine Pommard (42 years) growing on Dundee Hills' red volcanic soils.  As Patty and Jim write, "These now monster vines were planted back in 1973 making them some of the oldest vines in Oregon. This wine knows exactly what it wants to be. This is finesse, subtleness, elegance and discreet balance all backed up by a sneaky and looming firmness that comes on in the back of the wine. Only older vines make wines like this. This is not a wine that needs to make a dramatic entrance because all the work is done on the back end."

With just a touch of whole cluster and little new oak, this is a wildly in tense and complex follow-up to 2014's 93 point (Vinous) edition.  Dark and chewy, it layers black fruit, lavender, melted licorice, rose oil, meat juice and iron aromas and flavors on the nose and palate.  The energy builds through a finish that's long, deep, and mouthwatering, leaving tangy cherry, floral and smoke flavors lingering.  As Vinous said of the 2014, "I really like this wine's marriage of power and vivacity."  318 cases made

Patricia Green Pinot Noir Freedom Hill Dijon 115 2014 Product #31722 (In Stock)

"Limpid ruby-red. Raspberry liqueur, potpourri and Asian spice aromas, accompanied by suggestions of cola and incense. Stains the palate with vibrant red fruit and floral pastille flavors; peppery spice and mineral notes provide lift. Silky, even tannins build slowly and evenly on a strikingly long, mineral-laced finish that leaves notes of raspberry and allspice behind. There's impressive energy here for a wine from a ripe vintage."  Vinous (Raynolds) 93 points

"The 2014 Pinot Noir Freedom Hill Vineyard Dijon 115 is the same composition as the 2013, but with one-third new oak. It has an appealing bouquet with dark berry fruit, bell pepper and touches of brine, something very marine-like coming through with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with that bell pepper note coming through on the entry from the stem addition, lending a Loire-like character to this Pinot Noir. I appreciate the tension here, a rather uncompromising, yet compelling Pinot Noir with wonderful salinity towards the finish. Intellectual as well as sensorial, afford this 2-3 years in your cellar."Wine Advocate 93 points
