Kellerei Kaltern Caldaro Schiava 2015 Product #30795 (In Stock)
Kellerei Kaltern Caldaro Schiava 2015 Kellerei Kaltern Caldaro Schiava 2015

Schiava (also called Vernatsch or Trollinger) was actually the region’s most planted grape for many years – with 60% of total vineyard area – until Pinot Grigio and Chardonnay began to supplant it.  That’s too bad, because the light, crisp, and juicy red wines this local grape makes are fun to drink and pair well with a wide range of foods.

Reflecting the cultural and linguistic diversity of Alto Adige, the Schiava grape is called “Kalterersee” in the local dialect of the region around Lake Caldaro.  Grapes for this beauty grew on loamy, limestone gravel soils at 230-450 meters above the Lake and were fermented and aged entirely in tank. A delicious farmhouse red, loaded with red berry fruit, a hint of smoke, and a bright gentle finish.  Kind of like a ripe Chinon (but without the herbal notes), this is delicious with a light chill and shines with everyday foods and cured meats.  A tad more rich and round in the warm 2015 harvest, but still a refreshingly great value!

Kellerei Kaltern Caldaro Pinot Grigio 2015 Product #30819 (In Stock)
Kellerei Kaltern Caldaro Pinot Grigio 2015 Kellerei Kaltern Caldaro Pinot Grigio 2015

As Wine Enthusiast said in their 90 point review of the 2010 Caldaro Pinot Grigio - the first vintage we introduced you to - "It's hard to imagine Pinot Grigio better than this."  Over the past five vintages, the wine has gone from strength to strength and is now firmly ensonced as our all-time Pinot Grigio champion - no other comes close.

The 2015 opens with creamy aromas of peach, lime skin, and white flowers.  Take a sip and you’ll find a wine that’s at once crisp and rich and bursting with bright green pear, apple, peach and citrus and a long, mouthwatering, saline-inflected finish.  Just about the perfect all-around white to have on hand this summer, it’s a great match with everything from Spring salads to fresh fish, spicy Thai or cilantro accented Vietnamese dishes.  Or, just sip it all by itself for a delightful and delicious refreshment break.  Pinot Grigio for people who like flavor in their wine and anyone who appreciates outstanding value.

Kellerei Kaltern Caldaro Lagrein 2014 Product #30429 (In Stock)
Kellerei Kaltern Caldaro Lagrein 2014 Kellerei Kaltern Caldaro Lagrein 2014

Lagrein is sort of the Dolcetto of Alto Adige, the bold but flexible everyday red that pairs perfectly with cheese, sausage and savory main courses.  This one's a beauty, ripe and dark and loaded with earthy cherry and plum fruit and bitter chocolate notes.  The texture is generous and round- making it a nice sipper - but bright acidity and fine tannins let it shine at table. Delicious and fine value!

Tiefenbrunner Pinot Grigio Alto Adige 2015 Product #31450 (In Stock)
Tiefenbrunner Pinot Grigio Alto Adige 2015 Tiefenbrunner Pinot Grigio Alto Adige 2015

A whole lot of Pinot Grigio for the  money here from one of Alto Adige's most respected estates - especially in the great 2015 vintage. Lightly aromatic and fully flavored with pure apple and peach fruit in the middle and a touch of powdered spice on the finish.  The texture is unusually creamy and sophisticated and bright peach and lime notes come out with air and linger nicely.

Kellerei Kaltern Caldaro Pinot Bianco Vial 2015 Product #31032 (In Stock)
Kellerei Kaltern Caldaro Pinot Bianco Vial 2015 Kellerei Kaltern Caldaro Pinot Bianco Vial 2015

Not sure what's in the water these days at this excellent co-op in the Alto Adige, but we know what's in the bottle - a LOT of quality for the money.  This is a stunning Pinot Blanc, bursting with crisp green and yellow fruit with juicy acids and a firm, focused, mineral finish.  More so even than its appealing, subtle, refreshing aromas and flavors, the texture and balance here is what is really impressive.  Occupying that perfect middle ground between a light quaffer like Muscadet and a more serious, richer oaked Chardonnay, this is perhaps the ultimate wine to pair with any crab dish, but impossible to resist on its own.

"Kellerei Kaltern (Caldaro) does an excellent job with Pinot Bianco. This excellent value wine opens to bright fruit flavors and great mineral definition. The 2015 Alto Adige Pinot Bianco Vial is executed in stainless steel, although 10% of the wine sees aging in large oak casks. The wine is tonic and bright with an impressive charge of fresh fruit and white peach." Wine Advocate 91 points

Monasteries are important to Alto Adige wine history - and still make some of the area's best wines!  For example at this Benedictine house where Pinot Grigio is crisp and fresh and loaded with ripe pear and apple fruit.  A fabulously silky texture, almost steely minerality, and a mouthwatering fresh lemon note on the finish make this a great all-purpose Pinot Grigio for cheeses, seafood and just sipping.

Abbazia Di Novacella Kerner Praepositus 2014 Product #31876 (In Stock)
Abbazia Di Novacella Kerner Praepositus 2014 Abbazia Di Novacella Kerner Praepositus 2014

Indigenous to Alto Adige, Kerner is a natural cross between Schiava and Riesling. This is one of the best examples, with red and white fruit, good cut, and pretty lime and passion fruit notes on the finish.

"Intense tropical and exotic aromas of papaya, with dried pineapple and green mango too. Poached apples. On the palate, exuberantly textured but finishes completely dry. Full-bodied. Intense acidity. Kerner deserves respect. Beautiful white."  James Suckling 92 points

"Fragrant and polished, this radiant wine offers enticing scents of elderflower, yellow peach and aromatic herb. The elegantly structured palate delivers apricot, nectarine zest and a hint of white pepper, all framed in vibrant acidity."Wine Enthusiast 91 points
