Kellerei Kaltern Caldaro Schiava 2017 Product #33299 (In Stock)
Kellerei Kaltern Caldaro Schiava 2017 Kellerei Kaltern Caldaro Schiava 2017

Schiava (also called Vernatsch or Trollinger) was actually the region’s most planted grape for many years – with 60% of total vineyard area – until Pinot Grigio and Chardonnay began to supplant it.  That’s too bad, because the light, crisp, and juicy red wines this local grape makes are fun to drink and pair well with a wide range of foods.

Reflecting the cultural and linguistic diversity of Alto Adige, the Schiava grape is called “Kalterersee” in the local dialect of the region around Lake Caldaro.  Grapes for this beauty grew on loamy, limestone gravel soils at 230-450 meters above the Lake and were fermented and aged entirely in tank. A delicious farmhouse red, loaded with red berry fruit, a hint of smoke, aromatic rose petals and a bright gentle finish.  Kind of like a ripe Chinon (but without the herbal notes), this is delicious with a light chill and shines with everyday foods and cured meats.  A refreshingly great value!

Don't let the unusual grape or the dragon's scorch marks on the label scare you - this is a delicious, all-purpose, Italian red from the rarely seen Teroldego grape.  The grape's signature is a dark black color, juicy blackberry and black raspberry fruit, and hints of violet and licorice root.  All are on display here in this fun, lightly tannic, zesty red that finishes with a big squirt of dark fruit, licorice and lavender. A great match for pork or pizza!

Kellerei Kaltern Caldaro Pinot Grigio 2017 Product #33297 (In Stock)
Kellerei Kaltern Caldaro Pinot Grigio 2017 Kellerei Kaltern Caldaro Pinot Grigio 2017

A stunning follow-up to the James Suckling 92 point 2016 edition!  As Wine Enthusiast said in their 90 point review of the 2010 Caldaro Pinot Grigio - the first vintage we introduced you to - "It's hard to imagine Pinot Grigio better than this."  Over the past five vintages, the wine has gone from strength to strength and is now firmly ensconced as our all-time Pinot Grigio champion - no other comes close.

The 2017 opens with creamy aromas of peach, lime skin, and white flowers.  Take a sip and you’ll find a wine that’s at once crisp and rich and bursting with green pear, apple, peach and citrus and a long, mouthwatering, saline-inflected finish.  Just about the perfect all-around white to have on hand this summer, it’s a great match with everything from Spring salads to fresh fish, spicy Thai or cilantro accented Vietnamese dishes.  Or, just sip it all by itself for a delightful and delicious refreshment break.  Pinot Grigio for people who like flavor in their wine and anyone who appreciates outstanding value.

Kellerei Kaltern Caldaro Lagrein 2015 Product #32237 (In Stock)
Kellerei Kaltern Caldaro Lagrein 2015 Kellerei Kaltern Caldaro Lagrein 2015

Lagrein is sort of the Dolcetto of Alto Adige, the bold but flexible everyday red that pairs perfectly with cheese, sausage and savory main courses.  This one's a beauty, ripe and dark and loaded with earthy cherry and plum fruit and bitter chocolate notes.  The texture is generous and round- making it a nice sipper - but bright acidity and fine tannins let it shine at table. Delicious and fine value!

A whole lot of Pinot Grigio for the  money here from one of Alto Adige's most respected estates - especially in the great 2017 vintage. Lightly aromatic and fully flavored with pure apple and peach fruit in the middle and a touch of powdered spice on the finish.  The texture is unusually creamy and sophisticated and bright peach and lime notes come out with air and linger nicely.

Kellerei Kaltern Caldaro Pinot Bianco Vial 2015 Product #31032 (In Stock)
Kellerei Kaltern Caldaro Pinot Bianco Vial 2015 Kellerei Kaltern Caldaro Pinot Bianco Vial 2015

Not sure what's in the water these days at this excellent co-op in the Alto Adige, but we know what's in the bottle - a LOT of quality for the money.  This is a stunning Pinot Blanc, bursting with crisp green and yellow fruit with juicy acids and a firm, focused, mineral finish.  More so even than its appealing, subtle, refreshing aromas and flavors, the texture and balance here is what is really impressive.  Occupying that perfect middle ground between a light quaffer like Muscadet and a more serious, richer oaked Chardonnay, this is perhaps the ultimate wine to pair with any crab dish, but impossible to resist on its own.

"Kellerei Kaltern (Caldaro) does an excellent job with Pinot Bianco. This excellent value wine opens to bright fruit flavors and great mineral definition. The 2015 Alto Adige Pinot Bianco Vial is executed in stainless steel, although 10% of the wine sees aging in large oak casks. The wine is tonic and bright with an impressive charge of fresh fruit and white peach." Wine Advocate 91 points

Kellerei Kaltern Caldaro Pinot Bianco Vial 2016 Product #33296 (In Stock)
Kellerei Kaltern Caldaro Pinot Bianco Vial 2016 Kellerei Kaltern Caldaro Pinot Bianco Vial 2016

Pretty hard to argue with Wine Advoate's note here.  A great all-purpose white that's simply delightful to drink.

"Fresh apple and pear lift from the bouquet of the 2016 Alto Adige Pinot Bianco Vial. Those bright primary aromas shift and evolve to reveal crushed mineral, oyster shell and other elegant mineral tones. Italian Pinot Bianco possesses that characteristic tightness of texture that bodes well for the future aging ability of this linear and straight-shooting wine. It ages mostly in stainless steel, with just 20% that goes into large oak casks. This is a great value in an Italian white wine."Wine Advocate 91 points

A complex, zesty, Alto Adige Pinot Grigio from one of two fine co-ops (the other being Kaltern) in Bolzano.

"The Cantina Terlano 2016 Alto Adige Pinot Grigio is a bright and forthcoming white wine with an impeccably clean and snappy style. The wine shows delicate tones of white peach, nectarine and passion fruit. There are subtle tones of dried hay or garden herb at the back. This is a great pairing partner to spicy foods or sushi. Abbazia Di Novacella Kerner Praepositus 2016 Product #32362 (In Stock)
Abbazia Di Novacella Kerner Praepositus 2016 Abbazia Di Novacella Kerner Praepositus 2016

The Kerner grape was created in 1929 as a cross between Riesling and Trollinger (Schiava) by a German researcher attempting to strengthen Riesling’s resistance to late spring frosts.  A bit of a failure in Germany, it reached Italy’s mountainous Alto Adige region in the 1970s to be planted in high-altitude sites where frost regularly damaged Sylvaner, Muller-Thurgau, and other white grapes.  Largely due to the success at this monastery with 850 years of winegrowing experience, Alto Adige Kerner earned its own DOC designation in 1993.

Kerner Praepositus is from fruit growing a nearly a half-mile altitude on 25-40% gradient sloped vineyards running up the western edge of the Dolomites.  In 2016, it’s even more stunning than the Wine Enthusiast 95 point 2015.  Bold and heady aromas of peach, orange zest, green apple, ginger, and smoked herb really burst from the glass.  On the palate, it starts broad and fleshy with deep apricot, citrus, and apple fruit with just a hint of raspberry framed by zingy notes of tangerine zest, ginger, and a hint of spearmint. Then, as the flavors completely fan out, WHAM comes a burst of crushed salty stone that propels the stone fruit, ginger and mint flavors through a long finish you'll still be tasting a minute or more later.  A beautiful wine to drink now – 2020 or so.

Pacherhof Pinot Grigio 2015 Product #33062 (In Stock)
Pacherhof Pinot Grigio 2015 Pacherhof Pinot Grigio 2015

The Huber family has made wine on the hills above Alto Adige's Brixen since 1142, so it's not surprising they've figured this stuff out.  About 20% of the juice is aged in used French oak, giving this a bit more textural richness and smoky complexity than your typical Grigio.  There's generous green apple and ripe stone fruit at the core with captivating accents of chamomile and Alpine herb.  Finishes with palate-coating richness and tangy, herbal, freshness and fine energy.  A treat!

Alto Adige's Lagrein grape gives dark, savory, wines with a whiff of licorice and firm tannins.  Here perfectly ripe fruit is allowed to mature and soften a tad for 18 months in barrique to round off tannins and gain an extra layer of smokey complexity.  A fine match for earthy pork or lamb dishes or even salty ham!

"Aromas and flavors of spice, berry and cedar. Plenty of wood showing now but should come around nicely. Medium body, linear tannins and acidity. Drink or hold." James Suckling 92 points
