Kellerei Kaltern Caldaro Schiava 2015 Product #30795 (In Stock)
Kellerei Kaltern Caldaro Schiava 2015 Kellerei Kaltern Caldaro Schiava 2015

Schiava (also called Vernatsch or Trollinger) was actually the region’s most planted grape for many years – with 60% of total vineyard area – until Pinot Grigio and Chardonnay began to supplant it.  That’s too bad, because the light, crisp, and juicy red wines this local grape makes are fun to drink and pair well with a wide range of foods.

Reflecting the cultural and linguistic diversity of Alto Adige, the Schiava grape is called “Kalterersee” in the local dialect of the region around Lake Caldaro.  Grapes for this beauty grew on loamy, limestone gravel soils at 230-450 meters above the Lake and were fermented and aged entirely in tank. A delicious farmhouse red, loaded with red berry fruit, a hint of smoke, and a bright gentle finish.  Kind of like a ripe Chinon (but without the herbal notes), this is delicious with a light chill and shines with everyday foods and cured meats.  A tad more rich and round in the warm 2015 harvest, but still a refreshingly great value!

Tiefenbrunner Pinot Grigio Alto Adige 2016 Tiefenbrunner Pinot Grigio Alto Adige 2016

A whole lot of Pinot Grigio for the  money here from one of Alto Adige's most respected estates - especially in the great 2016 vintage. Lightly aromatic and fully flavored with pure apple and peach fruit in the middle and a touch of powdered spice on the finish.  The texture is unusually creamy and sophisticated and bright peach and lime notes come out with air and linger nicely.

Kellerei Kaltern Caldaro Pinot Bianco Vial 2015 Product #31032 (In Stock)
Kellerei Kaltern Caldaro Pinot Bianco Vial 2015 Kellerei Kaltern Caldaro Pinot Bianco Vial 2015

Not sure what's in the water these days at this excellent co-op in the Alto Adige, but we know what's in the bottle - a LOT of quality for the money.  This is a stunning Pinot Blanc, bursting with crisp green and yellow fruit with juicy acids and a firm, focused, mineral finish.  More so even than its appealing, subtle, refreshing aromas and flavors, the texture and balance here is what is really impressive.  Occupying that perfect middle ground between a light quaffer like Muscadet and a more serious, richer oaked Chardonnay, this is perhaps the ultimate wine to pair with any crab dish, but impossible to resist on its own.

"Kellerei Kaltern (Caldaro) does an excellent job with Pinot Bianco. This excellent value wine opens to bright fruit flavors and great mineral definition. The 2015 Alto Adige Pinot Bianco Vial is executed in stainless steel, although 10% of the wine sees aging in large oak casks. The wine is tonic and bright with an impressive charge of fresh fruit and white peach." Wine Advocate 91 points

Kellerei Kaltern Caldaro Pinot Grigio Soll 2015 Product #32269 (In Stock)
Kellerei Kaltern Caldaro Pinot Grigio Soll 2015 Kellerei Kaltern Caldaro Pinot Grigio Soll 2015

The “big brother” to our best-selling Pinot Grigio of all time hails from a small vineyard small vineyard just north of the Alto Adige city of Bolzano.  Perched at 250-300 meters of elevation, it receives all of Alto Adige's bright summer sunshine but keeps cool thanks to constant breezes and cool evening air from the nearby Alpine and Dolomite mountains. A slow fermentation and aging of about 35% of the wine in large oak cask gives this more richness, power and complexity than the “regular” bottling, with no loss of refreshing crispness.  A great summer chill-out wine with the heft and body to enjoy on cool autumn and cold winter nights, too.

“Kaltern Caldaro offers an extensive line of value white wines that are truly spectacular. I am impressed by the Pinot Bianco, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Grigio and Kerner-based wines. I highly recommend these beautiful wines from the extremely balanced 2015 vintage. The Kaltern Caldaro 2015 Alto Adige Pinot Grigio Söll is a zesty and refreshing white wine that delivers a pristine and bright drinking experience. There is a touch of sassy spice on the close that follows fruity tones of peach, melon and citrus. The wine offers good dimension and depth.”Wine Advocate 90 points

Kellerei Kaltern Pinot Noir Saltner Alto Adige 2015 Product #32268 (In Stock)
Kellerei Kaltern Pinot Noir Saltner Alto Adige 2015 Kellerei Kaltern Pinot Noir Saltner Alto Adige 2015

We found lots to love when visiting the winery in Alto Adige, with this Pinot Noir one of the stars of the tasting.  It’s 100% Pinot grown mainly at about 400 meters altitude around Lake Kaltern and in nearby villages.  As the grapes come into the modern winery, they are destemmed, crushed, and allowed to ferment slowly in open wood vats before going into a mixture of large and small used French oak casks for 12 months off aging.

Words like “beautiful” and “lovely” keep coming to mind here.  The wine’s a stunning transparent garnet color in the glass and the aromas are redolent of just picked strawberry, right-off-the-tree red cherry, and mountain flowers with just a hint of wood spice and smoke.  The texture is silky and luscious, delivering mouthfilling flavors of strawberry pie and sweet cherry with accents of berry blossom, spice and smoke.  At just 13% alcohol, it’s certainly not heavy, but the flavors really coat your mouth with sweet richness before finishing crisp, clean, and fresh with a touch of spice and mouthwatering cranberry at the end.  With a light chill, this is the perfect summer red for salmon, salami, fried chicken (hot or cold!), or just toasting the sunset.

Kellerei Kaltern Castel Giovanelli Sauvignon Blanc 2014 Product #32346 (In Stock)
Kellerei Kaltern Castel Giovanelli Sauvignon Blanc 2014 Kellerei Kaltern Castel Giovanelli Sauvignon Blanc 2014

When I tasted this at the winery, my note was simple:  "Zowie - that's freaking delicious!"  While the US press has missed this stunning, small production, barrel fermented Sauvignon so far, Decanter rated it 90 points, Falstaff (Austria) 91 points, and Italy's Gambero Rosso gave it "Two Glasses."  You'll want at least two glasses of this luxuriously textured, ripe and complex Sauvignon, too!

"Shining straw yellow. Fresh and memorable nose, after gooseberries, tomato leaves and whitethorn blossoms, clear. Flowering on the palate nicely, unfolds with fresh fruit, opens, after mirabelles and elderberry blossoms, long reverberation."  Falstaff 91 points

"Fresh, with lemon and lime notes nicely lifted by fresh floral notes and cooling mineral elements. Oak is used very well and well integrated leading to a long and very complex finish; a precise Sauvignon Blanc."  Decanter 90 points

Kellerei Kaltern Solos Lagrein Riserva 2012 Product #32345 (In Stock)
Kellerei Kaltern Solos Lagrein Riserva 2012 Kellerei Kaltern Solos Lagrein Riserva 2012

One of Italy's most under-rated red grapes, Lagrein is often made into fun and friendly quaffing wine, perfect for parties and pizza.  But with a little love, Lagrein's fun-loving personality can take on remarkable profundity.  Here the wine grows on alluvial sediments at 250 meters elevation.  The deep, sandy, soils warm easily in spring, allowing the 25-35 year-old Lagrein vines to develop intense color, great power, and layered depth.  Fermentation and aging in French oak plus extra time in bottle brings everything together into a delicious red that's light enough to sip and sophisticated enough to pair with lamb at table.

The wood has pretty much integrated fully now, showing mainly as a rich spice component to the dark red and black berry fruit.  There's a touch of earthy licorice root down somewhere deep, giving the blackberry pie and black raspberry fruit flavors a savory, sophisticated, flair.  Wood and time in bottle have tamed the grape's sometimes agressive tannins, allowing it to finish long and rich and very smooth.  Delicious now - 2022 at least.
