Dom Des Malandes Chablis 2016 Product #33319 (In Stock)
Dom Des Malandes Chablis 2016 Dom Des Malandes Chablis 2016

A stellar introduction to the joys of Chablis and the outstanding quality of the Marchive’s Domaine des Malandes.  The family makes this from 8 small parcels scattered across the region with vines up to 60 years old.  In 2016, there’s lovely fresh stone and white citrus fruit and plenty of salty, selzery, minerality.  As delicious as it is on first pour, give it some air and you'll love how it gains richness and depth.  Decant or enjoy over a couple of nights for a real treat now - or just let it grow in cellar!

"A ripe yet cool nose consists of notes of pear, apple, mineral reduction and a hint of sea breeze. Once again there is a beguiling succulence to the round, caressing and solidly concentrated flavors that deliver notably better depth and persistence on the clean and dry finale."Allen Meadows 87-89 points

Dom Des Malandes Cuvee Tour Du Roy VV 2016 Product #33322 (In Stock)
Dom Des Malandes Cuvee Tour Du Roy VV 2016 Dom Des Malandes Cuvee Tour Du Roy VV 2016

Tour du Roy comes from a small plot of 65 year-old vines growing near Grand Cru Vaudesir.  Luxurious winemaking featuring cool fermentation with 40% aging in 2nd and 3rd use barrel allows the quality to shine with an extra layer of smoky, stony, complexity.  The aromas are gorgeous with bold scents of fresh rainwater, honeysuckle, lime zest, lemon pulp and crushed stone jumping from the glass. The flavors deliver the same complexity with dried chive notes adding captivating complexity to the yellow apple, green pear and green and yellow citrus fruit and bracing, chalky, minerality.  Delicious now, but this will go a decade in cellar with ease.

"The 2016 Chablis Cuvee Vieilles Vignes Tour du Roy comes from a 1.5-hectare parcel of 60-year-old vines and sees six to nine months in vat. It has quite a complex bouquet that manages to offer appreciable mineralité and subtle fruit aromas that are seamless and almost premier cru in quality. The palate is fresh on the entry, quite saline and lively with a sappy, lightly spiced finish that feels long and persistent. This is an excellent follow-up to the 2015."Wine Advocate 90 points

Dom Des Malandes Chablis 1er Cru Fourchaume Vv 2016 Product #33321 (In Stock)
Dom Des Malandes Chablis 1er Cru Fourchaume Vv 2016 Dom Des Malandes Chablis 1er Cru Fourchaume Vv 2016

As always, this is a stellar value for drinking now and over the next 10 years.  Fourchaume sits on the same slope and to the north of the Grand Crus and often gives glimpses of Grand Cru richness and power.  As Wine Advocate notes, it’s a bit shy on first opening, but time in decanter (or 2-3 days open in the fridge) bring out both wonderful Chablis intensity and salty vibrancy here and a very generous dose of rich, ripe, buttered pear.  Turns stony and showing a touch of wood-induced salty caramel (20% ages in 1-5 year-old barrel) on the long, pure, finish.  Just delicious.

"This too is very firmly reduced and impossible to reasonably assess. On the plus side, the very round, opulent and lavishly rich flavors are borderline soft though the lightly wooded finish tightens up sufficiently to save the balance. Even so, this should drink well young."Allen Meadows 89-90 points

"The 2016 Chablis 1Er Cru Fourchaume comes from 60-year-old vines and sees six to nine months in stainless steel vat. It has a steely bouquet, tight and focused, perhaps a little too minimalist given the vineyard. The palate is well balanced with a fine thread of acidity. This is brisk and poised, quite understated, but I appreciate the balance and energy conveyed on the finish. This is a fine but discrete Chablis Fourchaume." Dom Des Malandes Chablis 1er Cru Mont De Millieu 2016 Product #33373 (In Stock)
Dom Des Malandes Chablis 1er Cru Mont De Millieu 2016 Dom Des Malandes Chablis 1er Cru Mont De Millieu 2016

We only got 6 cases of Mont de Milieu this year and it’s not nearly enough.  It’s from one of the warmer sites in Chablis and, like the Grand Crus, with prime southern exposure.  So Mont de Milieu gives wines of more body and richness and most other 1er sites but, at Malandes, is also loaded with zippy acids and crunchy chalk minerality.  A spell in barrel (50% of 1-5 years age) helps tame the fruit and allow true Chablis minerality and vivacity emerge.  Explosive now and even better from 2021.

"Sweet Spot. This had just been bottled prior to my visit and not surprisingly notes of sulfur and reduction pushed the fruit to the background. The palate impression of the full-bodied, sappy and relatively powerful flavors exude a fine bead of minerality that adds a bit of lift to the notably firmer, dry and focused finale. In contrast to most of the prior wines, this will need a few years of cellaring first. If you have the patience to wait this is worth considering."Allen Meadows 91 points

Dom Louis Michel Chablis 1er Cru Montee Tonnerre 2016 Product #33059 (In Stock)
Dom Louis Michel Chablis 1er Cru Montee Tonnerre 2016 Dom Louis Michel Chablis 1er Cru Montee Tonnerre 2016

Separated from the Grand Crus of Chablis by just a narrow ravine and sharing the Grand Crus' classic Kimmeridgian soils, Montee de Tonnerre is universally acclaimed as the best 1er Cru.  And at Louis Michel, it always delivers the grip, minerality, aging potential and very near the concentration of an outstanding Grand Cru - at a fraction of the price.  It's a bit quiet now - decant if you want to drink it tonight - but already shows fantastic purity, sizzlingly fresh green and white fruit, and loads of salty, stony, minerality.  Best 2020-2026.

“Light-medium yellow. A step up in aromatic complexity from the rest of the Louis Michel premier crus, but with its shy fruit element currently overshadowed by smoky oyster-shell minerality. Similarly, the wine's stone and citrus fruit flavors are dominated in the early going by rich, saline, rocky minerality. This structured wine finishes precise, shapely, firm and long. Excellent potential here, but this will need cellaring.”  Vinous (Tanzer) 90-92 points

Barat Chablis 1er Les Fourneaux 2000 Product #33151 (In Stock)
Barat Chablis 1er Les Fourneaux 2000 Barat Chablis 1er Les Fourneaux 2000

Not much Chardonnay reaches it's 18th birthday in good health and with lots of interesting things to say - but this one certainly has.  From the fine 1er Cru Fourneaux, this barrel aged Chablis shows a very pretty and maturing nose of lemon custard and lots of brine and oyster shell and white pepper/spice.  On the palate there's a pleasing roundness flavors of custard, sea shell, almond and hazelnut.  Finishes long, pure, and nicely mineral with salty toasted hazelnut and lime flavors lingering.

Dom Des Malandes Chablis Grand Cru Les Clos 2015 Product #31848 (In Stock)
Dom Des Malandes Chablis Grand Cru Les Clos 2015 Dom Des Malandes Chablis Grand Cru Les Clos 2015

From 50+ year-old vines in Chablis's greatest Grand Cru, this is simply stunning.  Fermented and aged all in French oak (1-5 years old), this wants 3-4 years for the vanilla to fade - then watch out.  A truly amazing price for very "grand" Grand Cru white Burgundy.

"Dusty and restrained but prefiguring the intensity on the palate. More obvious fruit on the mid palate than the Vaudésir but I find the latter more penetrating and persistent. This is more rounded and gentle."  JancisRobinson.com 17/20

"Moderate pain grillé sets off cool and pure aromas of white flower, lemon rind, tidal pool and quinine that retain a good sense of freshness. There is good richness to the intensely stony full-bodied flavors that possess good power and ample amounts of palate staining dry extract on the youthfully austere and beautifully long finale. This clean and balanced effort is drier than most 2015s and is the best wine in the range this year."Allen Meadows 90-93 points

Dom Alain Gautheron Chablis Grand Cru Valmur 2015 Product #33032 (In Stock)
Dom Alain Gautheron Chablis Grand Cru Valmur 2015 Dom Alain Gautheron Chablis Grand Cru Valmur 2015

Here’s a wine that shows the challenge of tasting very young white Burgundy.  Because the wine certainly is reduced and showing it's sulfur when you first open it (although Ed Addiss, Gautheron's importer, says it's already much less than six months ago).  Be patient.  If you want to drink this now, decant it for an hour. Better, open it, pour off a half glass, and then put it in the fridge for 24 hours (which I did).  Or best, stash some away and let a few years of cellar time work its magic.

As the sulfur blows off/integrates, you’ll discover a gem of a wine from a half-acre plot of 55 year-old vines growing in the outstanding Grand Cru of Valmur, right next to Les Clos in site and quality.  The captivating aromas include white and yellow fruits, crushed limestone, and hints of nutmeg and a bit of toasted nut.  On the palate there is good richness to balance the intense, vigorous, structure of bracing acidity and salty crushed rock.  A core of lemon pulp, crisp green apple, and walnut flavors slowly emerge along with a bare hint of fresh chervil.  The finish is long, pure, stony, salty and supremely mouthwatering.  This will really sing from 2020 and will still be going strong in 2035 – all at a price lower than you’d pay for most average village-level Puligny-Montrachet.
