Charles Clement Champagne Brut Tradition NV Product #31401 (In Stock)
Charles Clement Champagne Brut Tradition NV Charles Clement Champagne Brut Tradition NV

This small cooperative winery in the heart of Champagne has struck gold this year - and "yellow label gold" at that.  Because the Charles Clement Brut Tradition is the kind of wine that will thrill anyone who loves Champagne's most famous "yellow label" (which is actually orange) bottle.  It's a blend of 50% Pinot Noir for richness, 30% Chardonnay for toasty vibrancy, and 20% Pinot Meunier for depth and body.  With 30% reserve wines (base wines from previous vintages) and plenty of time on the lees, it's loaded with crowd-pleasing class.  Small, persistent, bubbles lift aromas of brioche, toasted nuts, apple and stone fruit from the glass.  Then, round and generous on the palate with nice creaminess and plenty of apple, pear, hazelnut and toast flavors that flow on nicely through the fine finish.  A very, very, fine Champagne value!

Jean Vesselle Brut Reserve Bouzy N/V Product #7655 (In Stock)
Jean Vesselle Brut Reserve Bouzy N/V Jean Vesselle Brut Reserve Bouzy N/V

After 300 years of growing and making Champagne in Bouzy, the Vesselle family has mastered the art of making rich, toasty, wines with creamy textures and pure, fresh, finishes. This 100% Grand Cru Pinot Noir (80%) and Chardonnay (20%) aged 30 months on the lees following secondary fermentation.

A smoky, toasty, nose shows hints of strawberry, pear and spice.  Then fresh and very pure in the mouth with red berry fruit, pear, spice and plenty of toast, biscuit and brioche. Perfect balance on the palate through the long, creamy, finish that lingers on and on. This is delicious to just drink but will work beautifully at table, too.

"Powerful, vinous and beautifully resonant, Vesselle's NV Brut Réserve hits all the right notes. The richness and radiance that make Bouzy Champagnes so compelling comes through in spades. Rich red stone fruit, spice, leather and lightly honeyed notes all form a super-attractive fabric of aromas and flavors in this deep, intensely satisfying NV Champagne. What a gorgeous wine this is."  Vinous (Galloni) 92 points

Jean Vesselle Brut Oeil De Perdrix NV Product #13956 (In Stock)
Jean Vesselle Brut Oeil De Perdrix NV Jean Vesselle Brut Oeil De Perdrix NV

Dom Perignon - yes, he was a real winemaking monk! - pioneered the making of "white" Champagne from "black" Pinot Noir grapes in the 1600s.  The techniques were refined by the large houses in Champagne's northern regions, but somehow never reached the little town of Bouzy in the south.  When Fulgence Vesselle and his neighbors started making their own Champagne around 1900 (having sold their grapes before), they slightly over-pressed and ended up with a wine that was neither all white or full pink - in fact, the pale orange pink of a partridge’s eye or Oeil de Perdix.

The style faded from view around mid-century, but in 1972 Fulgence's grandson, Jean Vesselle, discovered a few bottles of the old wine hidden in a wall.  He was astounded by the color, freshness, and lovely aromas of this old-style wine and, beginning a few years later, launched his own interpretation of Oeil de Perdix.  It's 100% Pinot Noir pressed lightly pink and aged 3 years in bottle before release. History never tasted so good!

"The salmon-colored NV Brut Oeil de Perdrix is another utterly delicious Champagne from Vesselle. Dried rose petals, orange zest, white pepper and mint give much of its high-toned aromatics, but there is plenty of depth to the fruit as well. Deceptively medium in body, the Oeil de Perdrix possesses striking finesse and exceptional overall balance. Oeil de Perdrix is an old-fashioned style of Blanc de Noirs with just a touch of color from a very short period of skin contact at pressing. "  Vinous (Galloni) 93 points

L. Aubry Fils Brut 1er Cru Nv L. Aubry Fils Brut 1er Cru Nv

"Meunier expresses here as barley, rusks, crackers, and so
the wine is rusky, coppery-saline, iodé, mineral and
appetizing. It’s beautifully expressive of a corner of
Champagne, and tastes as though it were fined with sel gris.
This year it’s 50% 2013 and 50% a perpetual reserve
started in 1998. Deg 1/2016, it’s 55% Meunier (higher than
usual), 25% CH, 20% PN and 5% “other” (which means
basically everything that wouldn’t fit in the vats); it’s in form,
brassy and oyster; after a dip a couple years ago (for which
we have our old friend 2011 to thank) this is better than
ever." -Terry Theise, Importer

Twin brothers Pierre and Philippe Aubry are best-known for
their cuvees rendered from the full range of cepages
authorized for Champagne -- in other words, for their having
tracked down, propagated, and showcased “forgotten”
Champagne varietals. The Aubrys ought to already be
known for perpetrating some of Champagne’s most
startlingly distinctive and profoundly delicious wines, period.

Eric Rodez Ambonnay Cuvee Des Crayeres NV Product #13997 (In Stock)
Eric Rodez Ambonnay Cuvee Des Crayeres NV Eric Rodez Ambonnay Cuvee Des Crayeres NV

Over the past few years, Cuvee Crayeres has graduated from a delicious introduction to Eric's wines to a complex, distinctive, very grand wine of its own. It's a 60/40 blend of Grand Cru Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, with about 40% aged in barrel and 60% allowed to go through malolactic fermentation.  About 50% of the blend is from reserve wines going back to the mid-2000s.  With 5+ years on the lees and dosage in the 3-4 g/l range, it’s a classy, elegant, and very pure bottle of bubbly.

This year’s release beautiful to look at with a bright brass color, great transparency and shine, and very, very, tiny and persistent buttles.  The aromas are ultra-pure, featuring fresh bread dough, apricot, peach, pear and spice with hints of fresh hazelnut for complexity.  The flavors are complex, too, with fresh lemon, stone fruit, key lime, and green apple fruit notes with accents of salty (not sweet) caramel, toast and spice.  The texture is very fine and sliky and the finish very, very long, with fresh lemon pulp and salty hazelnut notes lingering on and on.  Enjoy it right now for its citrusy freshness or let it rest for 1-4 years to pick up more ginger, baked pear, and toasty, nutty, complexity.

Eric Rodez Ambonnay Blanc De Blanc NV Product #31468 (In Stock)
Eric Rodez Ambonnay Blanc De Blanc NV Eric Rodez Ambonnay Blanc De Blanc NV

A new wine for us, but one that’s been getting a lot of “buzz” in the wine world recently.  As The New York Times reported last Christmas Eve, “Rodez is centered in Ambonnay, which is known as pinot noir country, but the producer makes an unusual, superb blanc de blancs ($65) from Ambonnay chardonnay. It is richer and fuller than the blanc de blancs you might find from, say, Vertus, but pure and beautifully balanced with great finesse and minerality.”

This new release is a step up from both the wine tasted by The Times and the 91 point example Vinous showcased three years ago.  The nose is reminiscent of maturing Grand Cru Chablis with leesy, brothy, aromas of ripe apple, tangy pear, salty stone, and a pretty accent of toasted hazelnut and caramel.  The salty, minerally, Chablis-like character continues on the palate with lemon, lime, and Granny Smith apple fruit and loads of saline crushed sea shell and chalk.  The ripe apple and apricot fruit comes up nicely on the finish where the very small bubbles lift the flavors and leave fresh stone fruit, citrus, buttered biscuit, and toasted hazelnut flavors with a just right dusting of lime zest.  Richer than all this sounds, the Blanc de Blancs will sing with lobster and scallops or refresh nicely on its own.

Stunning 100% Pinot Meunier aged 3 years on the lees.

"The NV Brut Premier Cru Les Vignes de Vrigny is bright, finely sculpted and chiseled throughout. This is an especially vibrant version of the Les Vignes de Vrigny, Egly-Ouriet's 100% Pinot Meunier. Candied lemon, chamomile, dried pear, almonds, white flowers and mint are all nicely delineated. With time in the glass, the wine softens nicely through the mid-palate and finish. Classy and understated to the core, the Les Vignes de Vrigny is an excellent choice for drinking now and over the next few years. In this release, the Vignes de Vrigny is 50% 2011, 25% 2010, 25% 2009, aged in equal parts tank and neutral oak."  Vinous (Galloni) 91 points

Bollinger Special Cuvee Brut NV Bollinger Special Cuvee Brut NV

As always, a mature style showing brioche, hazelnut, toffee, and butter scents and delivering a powerful, rich, palate with an firm finish.

"One of Bollinger’s great assets is a massive stock of reserve wine, including 600,000 magnums held under cork. Gilles Descôtes tends those reserves, working with the blending team to subsume the variations of the current vintage into Bollinger’s Special Cuvée by using a majority of reserve wines in the blend. The result is a rich and harmonious Champagne with deep reserves of flavor. Its substantial, formal structure feels polished, its flavors balancing the cool earthiness of a limestone cave and the sunnier, bright floral notes of fresh cream. Built for food, whether emphasizing the freshness with lobster bisque, or the depth with beef Wellington and chanterelles."Wine & Spirits 93 points

This stunning Champabage blends 70% Pinot Noir/30% Chardonnay from 3 Grand Cru sites in Ambonnay, Verzenay and Bouzy with about half from 2011 and the rest 2010, 2009 and 2008. Some of the base wine fermented in barrel for richness, supporting low (under 5 g/l) dossage levels.  This release was disgourged in May 2016 and will certainly be another in a long string of 92-94 point winners.  Galloni's review of last Fall's release remains on point.

"The NV Brut Grand Cru Tradition is all class. Suave, silky and expressive on the palate, the NV Grand Cru Tradition is quite pretty, with lovely brightness and freshness to balance the wine's inherent richness. Egly-Ouriet Nv Extra Brut V. P. Grand Cru Product #17955 (In Stock)
Egly-Ouriet Nv Extra Brut V. P. Grand Cru Egly-Ouriet Nv Extra Brut V. P. Grand Cru

"VP" stands for Vieillissement Prolongé - or extra long aging in bottle.  Here that means more than 6 years of time to develop toasty richness and need essentially no dossage. A masterpiece.

"The NV Extra Brut Grand Cru V.P. (Vieillissement Prolongé), Egly-Ouriet's from Ambonnay, Bouzy and Verzenay, is stellar. A towering, deeply expressive wine, the V.P. possesses stunning depth to match its spherical, textured personality. As is the custom here, the V.P. spent 76 months on its lees, yet it remains vibrant, poised and deeply refreshing. A host of chalk, white pepper, dried rose petal and red stone fruits wrap around the intense finish. Aging in oak shapes the wine beautifully here. What a gorgeous Champagne this is. The blend is 70% Pinot Noir and 30% Chardonnay. "  Vinous (Galloni) 95 points

"The NV Grand Cru V P Extra-Brut (VP stands for Viellissement Prolongé or extended ageing) is an assemblage of approximately 70% Pinot Noir and 30% Chardonnay, and it is not disgorged any earlier than after six years. The youngest cuvée is based on 2008 (60%) and 2006 (40%), and was disgorged in December 2015. Clear, deep and nutty on the nose, this is a rich yet pure and fresh, straight and firmly structured blend that is still very young; it will gain further complexity over the years. The grapes for this cuvée are sourced in the grand crus of Ambonnay, Bouzy and Verzenay."Wine Advocate 92 points

Eric Rodez Empreinte De Terroir 2003 Pinot Noir Product #30335 (In Stock)
Eric Rodez Empreinte De Terroir 2003 Pinot Noir Eric Rodez Empreinte De Terroir 2003 Pinot Noir

Eric's Empreinte De Terroir series is designed to showcase the unique character of his Grand Cru Ambonnay vineyard in a single vintage - in this case, the warm 2003 harvest.  From 30 year-old Pinot Noir vines, it is 100% barrel fermented and aged and spends 8 years on the lees before disgorgement with just 2 g/l dossage.

The 2003 shows a copper-tinged color with extremely fine bubbles.  Aromas of cherries, red flowers, and toast explode from the glass.  In the mouth it’s extremely deep, rich, and robust with complex flavors of red fruits, graphite and baked bread.  The flavors drive to a seemingly endless finish as hints of red raspberry and toast linger.  While fascinating to drink on its own, this would pair wonderfully with duck or any dish featuring wild mushrooms.  This will just get better in cellar over the next decade or so.

Everyone agrees on this one - as always one of the great wines of Ambonnay.

"Another standout, the 2006 Brut Millesime is stellar. This is an especially broad, creamy Champagne built on textural richness. Lemon oil, white flowers, smoke, almonds and baked apple are some of the signatures. Rich and resonant on the palate, the 2006 will drink beautifully for another decade or so, even if it could benefit from a little more time in bottle. Egly's 2006 is a pure pleasure to taste today."  Vinous (Galloni) 94 points

"The 2006 Brut Millésime Grand Cru is a really rich and intense, yet also a pure and fresh cuvée based on 60/70% barrel-fermented Pinot Noir and 30/40% barrel-fermented Chardonnay. It is a full-bodied, concentrated and extremely well-structured cuvée with a grippy, long and persistent finish. The dosage is two grams per liter.
