Giorgio Z Pinot Grigio Friuli 2016 Product #32501 (In Stock)

Friuli, just south of the Dolomite Mountains in northeastern Italy, gives a richer, broader, expression of Pinot Grigio than you'll find in Alto Adige. Which makes wines like this beauty a wonderful match for richer fish/poultry dishes and sipping in cooler weather.  Classic aromas and flavors of acacia blossom, ripe orchard fruits, and a light dose of green citrus with a rich, dense, almost unctuous texture that really coats your mouth.  Finishes with fine energy as green melon and lime zest flavors linger. The winemaker allowed the fresh Pinot Gris juice to stay in contact with the skins for a few hours adding a bit of golden color and a touch of refreshing bitterness that keeps this fresh, compelling, and delicious sip after sip.

Tiefenbrunner Pinot Grigio Alto Adige 2015 375ml Tiefenbrunner Pinot Grigio Alto Adige 2015 375ml

A whole lot of Pinot Grigio for the  money here from one of Alto Adige's most respected estates - especially in the great 2015 vintage. Lightly aromatic and fully flavored with pure apple and peach fruit in the middle and a touch of powdered spice on the finish.  The texture is unusually creamy and sophisticated and bright peach and lime notes come out with air and linger nicely.

Villa Brunesca Pinot Grigio 2015 Villa Brunesca Pinot Grigio 2015

In Italy's stellar 2015 harvest, this is a winner and a screaming value.  Nice, rich, aromas of juicy pear, tangerine zest and a hint of almond lead to a round mouthful of ripe pear, nectarine, and salty caramel flavors that coat your palate and make your mouth water.  There's a hint of fennel frond for extra complexity and fantastic freshness to the rich, ripe, flavors.  Much richer than normal for Pinot Grigio - almost Oregon weight here - with a juicy, fresh, finish.  Again, a winning value!

Di Lenardo Ronco Nole 2015 Product #32302 (In Stock)
Di Lenardo Ronco Nole 2015 Di Lenardo Ronco Nole 2015

The name of this Italian red blend is a joke - many wineries in the relatively flat Friuli region like to claim their wine is from this hill ("Ronco") or that.  "No Hill" is Max di Lenardo's blend of 50% Merlot, 25% Cabernet and 25% Refosco from the Friuli plains aged in American oak.  It's a spicy, peppery, wine with rich dark fruit and accents of vanilla and mocha.  Fresh enough to serve solo and even better with something grilled.

Zamo Pinot Grigio Ramato Friuli Colli Orientali 2016 Zamo Pinot Grigio Ramato Friuli Colli Orientali 2016

"Ramato" means "copper" in Italian, and this stunning Pinot Grigio gets just enough contact with the grape's light red skins to pick up a lovely coppery blush. Powerful aromas of fresh berries, tobacco, violets and honeysuckle lead to bold flavors of peach puree, sour cherry, and nectarine.  Full of fruit - but dry! - with a stony, mineral, finish. Great for sipping and magical with food.

Begali Amarone Della Valpolicella Classico 2012 Product #30731 (In Stock)
Begali Amarone Della Valpolicella Classico 2012 Begali Amarone Della Valpolicella Classico 2012

As Wine Advocate said in late 2013, “If you can name but two producers in Valpolicella (I’m betting they are Dal Forno and Quintarelli), it’s now time to add a third: Lorenzo Begali.”  Begali’s Amarone isn’t quite as hefty as Dal Forno and is much cleaner and less rustic than Quintarelli, but we agree that the quality-levels are very similar – even if the prices are about 80% less!

Soaring aromas of dried black cherry, blueberry, and blackberry are framed by subtle notes of oak, tobacco and chocolate.  On the palate the wine is amazingly pure, clean, and fresh – even at 15.5% abv! – with layers and layers of rich fresh fruit, dried berry and raisin, crushed flower, dark chocolate, cured tobacco, and sweet spice.  Plenty of Amarone richness and power, for sure, but with impeccable balance and silkiness of texture and perfectly integrated alcohol.  The juicy, fruit and spice-filled finish sails on over ripe tannins with berry and raisin flavors lingering on and on.  Put some away to enjoy with warming winter meals but don’t hesitate to pop a bottle now to pair with ribs, brisket, or any other rich food off the grill.
