Bargain Tempranillo!

"Aged for three months in three-year-old French and American oak barrels. Bright ruby. Fresh cherry and dark berries on the nose, with hints of vanilla and woodsmoke building with air. Juicy and seamless on the palate, offering gently sweet blackberry and cherry flavors and a touch of mocha. A floral nuance come up on the gently tannic finish, which lingers with good spicy persistence. Lots of bang for the buck here."  Vinous (Raynolds) 88 points

Bodegas Borsao Garnacha Tinto 2015 Product #31194 (In Stock)
Bodegas Borsao Garnacha Tinto 2015 Bodegas Borsao Garnacha Tinto 2015

Robert Parker called the 2011 edition of this perennial favorite value red, “Possibly the single greatest dry red wine value in the world.”  The 2015 edition is even better, clearly the best release of this all-time value champion we’ve tasted to date.  As always, it’s a blend of 85% Garnacha and 15% Tempranillo, all grown on the dusty, barren, soils of Spain’s Campo de Borja region.  Naturally grown, hand harvested, and fermented and aged all in tank, it’s a perfect blend of rich, ripe, fruit and stylish, refreshing, structure.

The wine opens with big, bold aromas of black cherry, dark berries, underbrush, loamy earth and cracked black pepper. Take a sip and you'll love the explosion of dark raspberry and blackberry fruit and accents of pepper, rich earth, and sweet spice - all from the grape, because there's no oak here at all.  The finish is broad, fresh and very long, with fine, dusty, tannins providing food-friendly support and dark berry and pepper flavors lingering nicely.  A delicious wine that sell for a crazy low price.

Lora Verdejo Sauvignon Blanc 2015 Product #31718 (In Stock)
Lora Verdejo Sauvignon Blanc 2015 Lora Verdejo Sauvignon Blanc 2015

What makes a perfect Spring/Summer party/back deck/casual entertaining white wine?  It seems to us that it should be fresh, crisp and refreshing – if you’re getting hot, it should cool you off.  It should have good body and weight so it can be enjoyed with treats like fresh seafood, grilled chicken or even hot dogs.  But, it should also have the zestiness and herbal complexity to be a perfect companion to fresh green salads.  And, in a perfect world, it should be at least a little distinctive so it stands out from the ocean of grocery store Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Grigio out there – but without standing out too far on price.

This is that wine!  It’s made from certified organic fruit grown by young Rioja winemaker Miguel Merino Navajas in vineyards located in the far East of La Mancha – where the hills begin to rise to mountains and cool air pours down nightly to preserve freshness.  Spain’s Verdejo grape gives this a nice dose of tangerine juice, orange zest, and good body.  Sauvignon Blanc provides a burst of refreshing white grapefruit, a touch of lime, and just a refreshing dusting of fresh grass.   As the winemaker says, “Perfect to drink with Tapas, salads and vegetable dishes, all kinds of pasta, mild cheeses and exotic cuisine. It also goes great with fish, seafood, grilled meats or just a glass on its own.”

Bobal De Sanjuan Vinas Viejas 2012 Product #29655 (In Stock)
Bobal De Sanjuan Vinas Viejas 2012 Bobal De Sanjuan Vinas Viejas 2012

Big and rich with plenty of power and a nice floral note, too.

"This 100% Bobal (60 to 80-year-old vines), aged four months in concrete, represents a terrific buy. It possesses excellent delineation as well as lots of blueberry and sweet and sour cherry fruit intermixed with notions of chalk and strawberries. Medium-bodied and fruity with attractive texture as well as purity, it should drink well for several years."Wine Advocate 88 points

Vina Galana Garnacha Tintorera 2014 Product #31687 (In Stock)
Vina Galana Garnacha Tintorera 2014 Vina Galana Garnacha Tintorera 2014

What the Spanish call Garnacha Tintorera, the French call Alicante Bouschet, the red-fleshed crossing of Garnacha and Petit Bouschet in 1866.  Here it's delivering plenty of Grenache-like fruit - think oven-warmed cherry and strawberry - with extra complexity from Bouschet's characteristic herbal, savory, character.  No oak here, so lots of ripe and juicy primary fruit that courses across your palate towards a chalky, dusty, finish.  Fun sipper and with food.

Enate Somontano Cabernet Merlot 2013 Product #31999 (In Stock)
Enate Somontano Cabernet Merlot 2013 Enate Somontano Cabernet Merlot 2013

We don't see much wine from Spain's Somontano DO in the foothills of the Pyrenees to the east of Campo de Borja.  Warm days and cool nights allow Bordeaux varietals to do well here, as this Cab/Merlot blend demonstrates.  There's generous blackcurrant and dark berry fruit here with a layer of spice from 6 months in barrel.  Finishes spicy and with dark fruit and a hint of cola.  A fine cookout red!

Bodegas Virgen De La Sierra Macabeo Albada 2015 Product #30902 (In Stock)
Bodegas Virgen De La Sierra Macabeo Albada 2015 Bodegas Virgen De La Sierra Macabeo Albada 2015

Better known under it's Rioja name of Viura, Macabeo flies under the radar as a main or blending grape in white Rioja, Cava, and other regional wines.  British Master of Wine Jancis Robinson has dubbed it "the Cinderella grape" in recognition of the way Macabeo is coming out of the shadows now and being allowed to shine on it's own.

This is a fine example from 35 year-old vines in Calatayud, not far from Rioja. You'll find Macabeo's signature notes of peach, orange, and almond here lifted by a note of juicy lemon.  Rich and creamy on the palate with good weight and a nice, refreshing, dusty minerality on the generous finish.  This will be especially delicious with fresh water fish done with butter and nuts or even with richer dishes like salmon.

Bodegas Castano Solanera Monastrell VV Yecla 2013 Product #30492 (In Stock)
Bodegas Castano Solanera Monastrell VV Yecla 2013 Bodegas Castano Solanera Monastrell VV Yecla 2013

"Even better is the 2013 Solanera is a “Vinas Viejas” that differs from the Castano (100% Monastrell), as this blend is 70% Monastrell, 15% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15 % Grenache, aged 10 months in French and American oak. Another difference from the Hecula is that it was aged equal parts in tank and the other half in French oak. The Solanera, which comes from relatively high-altitude limestone soils at 900 meters, has a dense purple color, a big sweet kiss of blueberry and blackberry fruit mixed with crushed chalk, a full-bodied mouthfeel, beautiful purity, density and richness. The oak is well concealed by the lavish fruit–the wine just amazing. Drink it over the next 2-3 years, as these powerhouses are best consumed in their exuberant and extroverted youth."Wine Advocate 92 points

Telmo Rodriguez Gaba Do Xil Godello 2015 Telmo Rodriguez Gaba Do Xil Godello 2015

One of Spain's best winemakers has turned out a stellar example of one of the country's most unique grapes:  Godello.  One of Spain's best winemakers has turned out a stellar example of one of the country's most unique grapes:  Godello.  This is from very old vine vineyards, so while it's mainly Godello, there are probably other grapes mixed in as well.  The steeply sloped granite soils allows this rich and deep wine to maintain freshness even in the warm 2015 harvest.

"Aromatic nose of green and yellow apples, apple skin and some ethereal cream notes. Full body, a round and silky texture and bright acidity."  James Suckling 93 points

Finca Valldosera Cava MS 4.7 Brut Nature NV Product #23945 (In Stock)
Finca Valldosera Cava MS 4.7 Brut Nature NV Finca Valldosera Cava MS 4.7 Brut Nature NV

Want to have a little fun?  Serve the Finca Valldosera Cava MS 4.7 Brut Nature blind to a Champagne lover.  They'll swear it's a top quality NV Champagne - and probably won't believe you when you tell them what you paid! Stunningly sophisticated, you'll find classic Champagne notes of brioche and toast plus notes of fennel and licorice.  Clean, crisp, and oh-so-elegant, this dances on the palate and delivers a long, complex, finish laden with toast and a hint of licorice. The beautiful color and fine bead keep you thinking Champagne.  The review below is from a releases ago, but still spot on!

"The Non-Vintage MS 4.7 Gran Reserva Brut Nature is the same blend as the Brut Nature cuvee but was selected from the estate’s best vineyards and spent 30 months sur lie. A bit deeper in color and more refined aromatically, it reveals an alluring palate of lemon-lime, toasted almonds, and floral notes. Mouth-filling and impeccably balanced, this superb Cava is an outstanding value meant for drinking over the next 2-3 years."Wine Advocate 91 points

Ameztoi Getariako Txakolina White 2015 Product #31021 (In Stock)

With 8 straight 91 point ratings from Vinous, it seems likely the new release is a winner, too!  Vibrant aromas of lime zest, Granny Smith, white flower and chalk lead to zesty flavors of citrus, apricot, passion fruit, and salty mineral that get more powerful with air (and as the light prickle of CO2 blows off).  A tarragon note emerges on the bone dry, energetic finish.  Great choice for shellfish and summer.

Envinate Benje Tinto Tenerife 2015 Product #31787 (In Stock)
Envinate Benje Tinto Tenerife 2015 Envinate Benje Tinto Tenerife 2015

This very hot collaboration's first red from Tenerife blends 70-120 year-old Listan Prieto with a bit of Tintilla.  Pretty much the definition of a "savory" wine here, with tangy cherry, tea, and a bit of funk on the nose and palate, mouthwatering acids and a fine dusting of tannin under the squirt of fresh cherry juicy on the finish. This will shine with mussels, shrimp, or chicken and mushrooms.

Bodegas Volver Triga Alicante 2012 Product #31015 (In Stock)
Bodegas Volver Triga Alicante 2012 Bodegas Volver Triga Alicante 2012

Another great vintage, even better price!  And, for some reason, now in a nice looking wood case, too.

"85% monastrell and 15% cabernet sauvignon.  Made from the estate's oldest monastrell vines, planted back to 1925. Inky ruby. An exotically perfumed bouquet evokes fresh black and blue fruits, incense, potpourri and five-spice powder. Stains the palate with intense boysenberry and cherry compote flavors, given spine and lift by a zesty mineral nuance. Densely packed yet lithe, finishing with outstanding thrust and smooth tannins that build slowly."  Vinous (Raynolds) 93 points

"A blend of head-pruned Monastrell with some Cabernet Sauvignon from chalk-rich soils fermented in open stainless-steel vats and aged in barrique for 20 months. You can feel the warmth and ripeness of the year in the aromas of prunes, blackberries, thyme and rosemary accented with plenty of sweet spices and smoky notes from the barrel that might need a little bit more time in bottle. The palate is full-bodied, with powerful tannins lifted by the alcohol on a warm finish. I'd wait a little bit for the bottle to render the puppy fat and allow the oak to better integrate. Drink the 2011 before this wine as it should age well."Wine Advocate 92 points

"This focused red offers a plush texture, with a firm backbone. Black cherry, spice, mineral and leafy flavors mingle harmoniously, with a good balance of well-integrated tannins and acidity. Toast and floral notes linger on the finish. Monastrell and Cabernet Sauvignon. Drink now through 2022."Wine Spectator 91 points
