Ferraton Cotes Du Rhone Blanc Samorens 2016 Product #32275 (In Stock)
Ferraton Cotes Du Rhone Blanc Samorens 2016 Ferraton Cotes Du Rhone Blanc Samorens 2016

Here's a delicious white Rhone from a biodynamic working in a great, great, vintage. A blend of Grenach Blanc and Clairette, made all in stainless steel tank.  Big aromas and flavors of peach, white flowers, and lime with a dusting of white pepper and crushed bitter mineral providing support on the mouthwatering finish. Concentrated, but not heavy, it's lovely to sip and will sing with fish or salads.

"Bright and lively, with racy verbena and honeysuckle notes pulling a core of yellow apple and melon rind flavors along. Shows a flash of lemon curd on the finish. Roussanne, Viognier, Grenache Blanc, Clairette and Marsanne."Wine Spectator 90 points

Dom Pontbriand Vaucluse 2016 Dom Pontbriand Vaucluse 2016

Kind of an old-school South-of-France red here with a bit of modern polish.  The blend is old-timey with 40% Grenache, 40% Caladoc, 10% Syrah and 10% Marselan all done in tank.  You'll certainly taste the warm, sunshiny, climate here in ripe plum and black raspberry fruit and there's a nice dose of black olive, thyme and lavender, too.  But the flavors stay as fresh as a daisy right on through the dusty, lightly chewy, finish.  Great all-purpose bistro red at a fine, weeknight, price.

Ferraton Cotes Du Rhone Rouge Samorens 2016 Ferraton Cotes Du Rhone Rouge Samorens 2016

This Northern Rhone specialist (based in St Joseph) does a great job with Cotes du Rhone from the south - like this ripe, plump, and easygoing blend of Grenache and 40% Syrah. Vintage 2016 is superb across the Rhone and here where dark, ripe, raspberry and black plum fruit gains complexity from accents of summer flowers and garrigue. Finishes fresh and long with savory, meaty, hints.  A smooth and robust sipper and match for pretty much anything.

Charles Thomas Cotes Du Rhone 2016 Charles Thomas Cotes Du Rhone 2016

In 2016, this happy, eager to please, Cotes du Rhone opens up with fresh aromas of blackberry, currant, cracked pepper, lavender and a hint of smoke.  On the palate it’s medium-bodied and pumps out flavors of just-picked raspberry and blackberry, cranberry, and a touch of crumbled dry herb.  It finishes with a big burst of tangy raspberry, black pepper, and red plum, mouthwatering and thirst quenching and with just enough dusty tannin to stand up to pizza, nachos, sausages, fried chicken, or the casual fun-food of your choice!

Dom Philippe Plantevin Cotes Du Rhone Blanc 2017 Product #33418 (In Stock)
Dom Philippe Plantevin Cotes Du Rhone Blanc 2017 Dom Philippe Plantevin Cotes Du Rhone Blanc 2017

Many of you have had the pleasure of meeting Philippe during one of his (too infrequent) visits to the store and many more of you have been drinking his robust Cotes du Rhone reds for years.  So you already know that Philippe is a humble, no fuss, no drama, winegrower who makes wines loaded with ripe fruit, bold textures, long finishes, and oodles of honest Rhone character.  What you might not yet have discovered:  Philippe is one of the best white wine makers working in the Southern Rhone today!

Especially 2017, where one sniff and sip will have you agreeing with me and his importer, Olivier Daubresse:  this is the best white wine Philippe has ever made.  As always, it’s a blend of 50% Viognier, 30% Grenache Blanc and 20% Marsanne done entirely in tank.  The nose is so pretty, with generous but poised aromas of summer peach and apricot, a squirt of Clementine, white flowers, and just a touch of crushed stone.  As Philippe’s Viognier vines have matured, the floral/stone fruit notes have become a bit more restrained, allowing notes of earth, mineral and citrus to become easier to small and taste.  The flavors are round and smooth on the front and mid-palate before the lemon, peach and crushed stone flavors gain power and breadth across the long, mouthwatering, finish.

A joy to drink tonight on its own or with a broad range of summery foods, this will handle heavier and more savory dishes come winter and mature gracefully for at least a decade.

Dom La Manarine Cotes Du Rhone 2015 Dom La Manarine Cotes Du Rhone 2015

A 100% Grenache from this family-owned, organic estate with holdings in an area of unique terroir in the Southern Rhone known as "Le Plan de Dieu," whose soil is full of 'galets,' the smooth, round stones characteristic of the region. While the aromas have that classic herbal garrigue note, on the palate the fruit is bold, satisfying, and ripe flavors of blackberries and lusciously ripe raspberries.

Guigal Cotes du Rhone 2014 Product #33004 (In Stock)

A classic, gutsy, Cotes du Rhone made from 50% Syrah, 40% Grenache and 10% Mourvèdre.

"Gorgeous tobacco, black pepper, black cherry and an attractive dash of herbal complexity too. Still-youthful fruit on the palate, yet already showing attractive evolution. As ever, this is surely one of the most reliable large-scale wines in existence. Firm tannin with much more refreshing acid than most Côtes du Rhônes thanks to the high Syrah element."  JancisRobinson.com 16.5/20 points

Kermit Lynch Cotes Du Rhone 2015 Product #33055 (In Stock)

Importer Kermit Lynch has this wine made for him, and it's as natural, savory, and pure as you'd expect from this collaboration and the excellent 2010 vintage.  It's full of earthy  red fruit, and while it's fully ripe, it's also mineral-driven and very nicely structured.  Try it with stews, roasted meats, or just a handful of olives and then look out for the explosion of flavor!

Dom Philippe Plantevin Cotes Du Rhone Blanc 2016 Product #32260 (In Stock)
Dom Philippe Plantevin Cotes Du Rhone Blanc 2016 Dom Philippe Plantevin Cotes Du Rhone Blanc 2016

Another lovely vintage for this classy Rhone white that puts many (much more expensive) Chateauneuf-du-Pape whites to shame.  As always, it’s about half Viognier for peachy fruit and fragrance plus Grenache blanc for body and Marsanne for complexity and minerality.

The excitement starts on the nose, where you’ll find generous aromas of creamy peach, fruit blossom, Clementine and crushed chalk. Take a sip, and you'll experience an explosion of bright apricot, yellow peach, honeysuckle and mint flavors up front before chalk, wet stone, and peach skin notes emerge at the end. The juicy acids keep this rich, medium-bodied, white fresh and make it a great choice for drinking as an aperitif, with cheeses, or with grilled fish and fruit salsa.  It will age surprisingly well if you can keep your hands off it now!

A robust but smooth blend of 80% Grenache and 20% Syrah, this is Cotes du Rhone to sip or pair with all kinds of foods.  Aromas and flavors of peppery dark fruits (blackberry, black cherry, plum) get nice complexity from hints of leather, pine and savory herb.  Round, plush, and full-bodied, it finishes with a burst of fruit and herb and soft, supple, tannins.  Love the depth and richness here for drinking right now!

Dom Notre Dame Des Pallieres Sablet CdR Villages 2015 Product #32766 (In Stock)

Here's a bold, rich, very meaty, Rhone red from a Gigondas estate working in the up-and-coming village of Sablet. 60% Grenache gives this plenty of fleshy, baked raspberry, fruit at the core. But the 40% Syrah really sings out, adding dark blackberry and plum notes to the baked raspberry fruit and a savory, meaty, element ot the firm finish.  Deep, spicy and rich and a very fine value.

Our favorite "almost-CDP" is singing in ripe, fleshy, fruit-filled edition that finishes long and firm.  A great value.

"Deeper in color than the Cotes du Rhone Reserve, the 2015 Cotes du Rhone les Champauvins is a solid step up, with fabulously complex notes of Bing cherry, blueberries, raspberries, spring flowers and pepper all emerging from the glass. Medium to full-bodied, rich and beautifully textured, it tastes more like a Chateauneuf du Pape than a Cotes du Rhone. Drink it anytime over the coming 4-5 years."Wine Advocate 90-92 points

Dom Philippe Plantevin Cdr Visan 2015 Product #32019 (In Stock)
Dom Philippe Plantevin Cdr Visan 2015 Dom Philippe Plantevin Cdr Visan 2015

If you like your reds a bit more on the funky, earthy, chocolaty, side, then this is the 2015 Plantevin for you!  The blend here is 52% Grenache, 26% Syrah, 20% Carignan and the rest Mourvedre, all made and aged in tank.  The Syrah and dollop of Mourvedre really show on the nose, with bold aromas of dark black fruits, leather, roasted meat and fresh earth boiling up out of the glass.  The texture in the mouth is a bit richer and fuller than La Daurelle and the fruit darker and more roasted.

A hint of bitter chocolate joins the dark fruit flavors with accents of roasted meat, earth, warm stones and garrigue delivering fantastic complexity.  With air, the earthy, slightly funky, notes of classic Southern Rhone reds come up and sing out.  Firm, muscular, and juicy on the finish, this is a great rendition of Visan with outstanding length and power to the long finish.  Ready now for sure and even better over the next few years.  A winner.

Dom De La Mordoree Tavel Rose La Dame Rousse 2017 Product #33332 (In Stock)
Dom De La Mordoree Tavel Rose La Dame Rousse 2017 Dom De La Mordoree Tavel Rose La Dame Rousse 2017

As Robert Parker said, “If you haven't discovered, Mordorée continues to make some of the finest dry Rosés available anywhere in the world.”  The magic starts with 40 year-old plantings of Grenache, Cinsault, Syrah, and Mourvedre - the black grapes for color - and 5% each of Clairette and Bourboulenc - the white grapes for vivacity and freshness.  After harvest, the grapes are crushed and allowed to soak in their juice for 3-4 days to extract flavor and aroma and also a rich, dark, salmon color.

Like any great Tavel, this is more deep, intense, and seriously red wine-like than most rosés you’ve experienced.  Big aromas of ripe strawberries, roses, orange blossom and creamy framboise jump from the glass.  On the palate, its rich, mouthfilling, and creamy in texture with intense berry and floral flavors lifted by a pop of bright acidity and chalky mineral on the long, dry, lipsmacking, finish.  A serious rosé for a contemplative glass of wine on the back deck while the sun sets, or to wow your guests at your next warm-weather dinner party. And don’t forget to put away a few bottles for the holidays, because this is the answer to the age-old question of what to serve at Thanksgiving this year or for 2 or 3 years to come!

If you want serious, demanding of attention, worthy of discussion and debate Rasteau...then look elsewhere.  Because my raw tasting notes on this boil down to "classy yummy fun."  Lots of dark roasted red and black berry fruit with rich accents of chocolate and spice and dusty, not intrusive or hard, tannins here.  Rasteau was just  promoted from CdR Villages to AOC in 2010, so the wines are getting more "serious."  Thank goodness they didn't get the message here!

Clos Du Caillou CdR Bouquet Des Garrigues 2015 Product #32647 (In Stock)
Clos Du Caillou CdR Bouquet Des Garrigues 2015 Clos Du Caillou CdR Bouquet Des Garrigues 2015

Always one of our very favorite Cotes du Rhones, and in 2015 a wine that outshines many much more expensive Chateauneuf du Pape!  It’s a blend of 85% Grenache and equal parts Syrah and Mourvedre, all aged in tank and neutral barrel.  Grenache raspberry and sweet cherry aromas and flavors take center stage, but there’s plenty of black olive tapenade, crushed herb, and black pepper complexity.  Very pure, very delicious.

"The Vacheron family, along with winemaker Bruno Gaspard and assistant Aude Perche, as well as superstar Oenologist Philippe Cambie, continue to keep Domaine du Clos du Caillou one of the leading estates in Châteauneuf du Pape. In addition, they fashion some of the most incredible Côtes du Rhônes out there. Another terrific-looking barrel sample is the 2015 Côtes du Rhône Villages Bouquet des Garrigues, which is medium to full-bodied, rounded and charming, with sweet tannin and lots of Provençal notes of raspberries, cherries and licorice."Wine Advocate 90-92 points

Dom Gramenon Cotes Du Rhone l'Elementaire 2015 Dom Gramenon Cotes Du Rhone l'Elementaire 2015

A star of the Kermit Lynch portfolio and one of those wines drinkers - as opposed to critics - love, Domaine Gramenon is a gem of a Cotes du Rhone estate located just outside Vinsobres.  Michèle Aubèry-Laurent and her husband founded the estate in 1990 and she has continued in charge since his untimely death in 1999.  Farming is organic, winemaking natural, and sulfur use as low as possible.  This cuvee is almost all Grenache from 45 year-old vines that may or may not include some Cinsault or Syrah.  Aged in used barrique and concrete, it resembles a top Chateauneuf du Pape with bold Grenache red fruit, black olive and piney herb accents, and a deep, long, chewy, finish.  Drink now - 2028 with lamb and other rich foods.
