Dom Pontbriand Vaucluse 2015 Product #31877 (In Stock)
Dom Pontbriand Vaucluse 2015 Dom Pontbriand Vaucluse 2015

Kind of an old-school South-of-France red here with a bit of modern polish.  The blend is old-timey with 40% Grenache, 40% Caladoc, 10% Syrah and 10% Marselan all done in tank.  You'll certainly taste the warm, sunshiny, climate here in ripe plum and black raspberry fruit and there's a nice dose of black olive, thyme and lavender, too.  But the flavors stay as fresh as a daisy right on through the dusty, lightly chewy, finish.  Great all-purpose bistro red at a fine, weeknight, price.

La Combe Perdue Grenache Mediterranee 2015 La Combe Perdue Grenache Mediterranee 2015

Like your reds really rich, really mouth-filling, and really loaded with ripe raspberry and roasted strawberry Grenache fruit plus a big dose of Rhonish garrigue and spice?  If so, this simply staggering value is for you.  From vineyards all across the Rhone, it's 100% tank-raised Grenache that explodes with super dark, ripe, almost jammy red fruit ("confit of raspberry" sounds so much better than "jammy")  plus bold notes of thyme, rosemary and pepper before finishing with a big gush of fruit.  Nothing subtle here, but loads of fun.

Guigal Cotes-du-Rhone 2013 Product #31706 (In Stock)
Guigal Cotes-du-Rhone 2013 Guigal Cotes-du-Rhone 2013

"Spice- and smoke-accented cherry and dark berry aromas are complemented by suggestions of candied violet and cracked pepper. Spicy, energetic and sharply focused on the palate, offering concentrated bitter cherry and floral pastille flavors that open up slowly with air. Distinctly northern Rhône in personality and texture, featuring a peppery, floral-dominated finish, smooth tannins and excellent closing thrust and persistence. The quality of this bottling consistently outpaces its price and appellation, and that's especially true in this vintage."  Vinous (Raynolds) 91 points

Les Vignerons De Tavel Lirac Les Hauts d'Acantalys 2015 Product #31989 (In Stock)
Les Vignerons De Tavel Lirac Les Hauts d'Acantalys 2015 Les Vignerons De Tavel Lirac Les Hauts d'Acantalys 2015

SUPER VALUE ALERT!  Lirac is a lot like Chateauneuf but softer and more sweetly fruited.  And this is a top, prime, delicious example at a great price. Smells like Lirac with baked strawberry and red cherry on the nose with hints of flowers and warm tone.  Then it's more fresh then you'd expect on the palate with ripe strawberry and black cherry fruit and an exotic lilac note for complexity.  Nice and dusty on the finish where stone, fruit, and floral flavors linger.

"Youthful violet. Smoke-tinged black and blue fruit and licorice scents show good focus and a subtle hint of cracked pepper. Juicy and smooth in the mouth, offering fresh cherry and blueberry flavors and a touch of bitter chocolate. Shows good breadth and cling on the spicy finish, which is shaped by dusty tannins."  <b>Vinous (Raynolds) 89 points

Dom Jean Royer Le Petit Roy 15eme Product #31415 (In Stock)
Dom Jean Royer Le Petit Roy 15eme Dom Jean Royer Le Petit Roy 15eme

Our second shot at Jean-Marie Royer’s everyday wine shows why waiting a bit can be a virtue even for “little” wines!  Because as impressive as this was last Fall, the 2015 edition of Petit Roy is simply stunning right now.  For this wine, Jean-Marie blends fruit from a small plot just outside the Chateauneuf boundaries and a family vineyard inside the boundaries that doesn’t qualify for the CdP AOC because it has too much clay.  Then – the secret sauce – he adds a bit of “real” Chateauneuf du Pape juice that didn’t get into the main wines.  Because the rules forbid declassifying CdP to Cotes du Rhone, this is legally just “table wine” and cannot carry any indication of area of origin or vintage (although, as you can see, he cheats a bit there).

In 2015, La Petit Roy isn’t very “Petit.”  In fact, it’s a pretty big and burly thing with deep base notes of black raspberry and roasted strawberry plus lively accents of crushed herb, lavender, black pepper and spice.  The grapes are mainly Grenache with seasoning splashes of Syrah (for depth) and Alicante (for herbal complexity and color).  Very Provençal and pretty enough to serve at a party but with more than enough heft to pair with leftover leg of lamb.  It’s wide open and ready to love today but will still be pumping out joy in 2020. Fantastic value for a “baby CdP.”

Dom Philippe Plantevin Cotes Du Rhone Rouge 2015 Product #32017 (In Stock)
Dom Philippe Plantevin Cotes Du Rhone Rouge 2015 Dom Philippe Plantevin Cotes Du Rhone Rouge 2015

A 50/50 blend of Grenache and Syrah, and in the great 2015 vintage, it’s one of the sexiest releases of this robust Rhone we’ve tasted yet.  Big, Rhone-ish, aromas here with a big dose of black raspberry and black cherry, a touch of dried plum, a punch of dark chocolate, and a beguiling accent of candied violets.  The wine completely envelops your palate with ripe fruit that remains remarkably fresh – think crushed raspberry, mid-season cherry, and black plums just plucked from the tree.  And, like any really fine wine, it’s better still on the killer finish where tangy cherry, chocolate, red plum, and smoked stone flavors sail on over fine-grained tannins.  About as versatile and food friendly as Cotes du Rhone gets, you’ll love this with summer burgers and find yourself reaching for a bottle to drink with pizza, sausages, lamb, and more for at least the next 4-5 years.

Dom du Bois St Jean Cotes du Rhone l'Intrepid 2015 Product #31775 (In Stock)
Dom du Bois St Jean Cotes du Rhone l'Intrepid 2015 Dom du Bois St Jean Cotes du Rhone l'Intrepid 2015

Our first thought on tasting this robust, complex, Southern Rhone red?  "Tastes like a mini-Chateauneuf du Pape!" Most Cotes du Rhone is 80-100% Grenache, which usually means fun, if uncomplicated, easy-drinking reds. Here Grenache makes up only 60% of the blend, with big doses of Syrah (30%) and tricky to ripen Mourvedre (15%) ramping up the wine's richness, texture, and earthy, meaty, character.  A small dash of Cariganan adds spice and minerality that helps elevate l'Intripde far beyond average Cotes du Rhone quality and starts to challenge much more expensive Chateauneuf du Pape!

The wine opens with big aromas of dark fruit - blackberry, black raspberry, blueberry, plum - plus notes of roasted raspberry, smoked meat and garrigue - wild thyme, lavender and olive.  In the mouth it's remarkably dense and sweetly fruited for Cotes du Rhone, with more dark fruit, garrigue and spice flavors and a rich texture that borders on velvety.  The finish is long and earthy and complex, with fine tannins giving support for food but not interfering with solo sipping.  A delicious, outstanding value, red to enjoy now and over the next 5 years.

Les 2 Vaches Rouge (Tannat) 2015 Product #31994 (In Stock)
Les 2 Vaches Rouge (Tannat) 2015 Les 2 Vaches Rouge (Tannat) 2015

The 2 Red Cows represent 2 brothers and the emblem of their home - the Bearn region in France's Southwest Madiran region. The grape here is Tannat, thick skinned, deeply colored, full of dark fruit and spice and - usually - pretty darn tannic.  Here ripened fully and fermented gently, the tannins are soft and supple and support the dark purple fruit and spice flavors.  The tannins soften further with something savory to eat, so grill up a burger and enjoy!

"Two red cows with blue horns grace the label of this wine, for no apparent reason except they look fun. And the wine, 100% Tannat, is made to be fun and easy to drink as well. No hard tannins here, just ripe blackberry and black currant fruit along with juicy acidity."Wine Enthusiast 88 points

Dom Philippe Plantevin Cotes Du Rhone Blanc 2016 Product #32260 (In Stock)
Dom Philippe Plantevin Cotes Du Rhone Blanc 2016 Dom Philippe Plantevin Cotes Du Rhone Blanc 2016

Another lovely vintage for this classy Rhone white that puts many (much more expensive) Chateauneuf-du-Pape whites to shame.  As always, it’s about half Viognier for peachy fruit and fragrance plus Grenache blanc for body and Marsanne for complexity and minerality.

The excitement starts on the nose, where you’ll find generous aromas of creamy peach, fruit blossom, Clementine and crushed chalk. Take a sip, and you'll experience an explosion of bright apricot, yellow peach, honeysuckle and mint flavors up front before chalk, wet stone, and peach skin notes emerge at the end. The juicy acids keep this rich, medium-bodied, white fresh and make it a great choice for drinking as an aperitif, with cheeses, or with grilled fish and fruit salsa.  It will age surprisingly well if you can keep your hands off it now!

Dom Philippe Plantevin Cdr Villages Cairanne 2012 Product #32018 (In Stock)
Dom Philippe Plantevin Cdr Villages Cairanne 2012 Dom Philippe Plantevin Cdr Villages Cairanne 2012

There's nothing shy about this intense, powerful, blend of Grenache (60%) and Syrah (40%) from the warm 2012 Rhone vintage.  Bold aromas of dark black cherry, black raspberry, leather, roasted meat, and more jump from the glass.  On the palate, it's as rich and luxurious as a top-notch Chateauneuf du Pape with layered flavors of kirsch, cherry, black plum, pepper, and sweet spice.  For all its ripeness and power, the texture is sophisticated and silky with juicy acids and very fine-grained, ripe, tannins. It's the most polished and refined version of this, Philippe Plantevin's top wine, we've ever tasted.  While it will certainly delight right now with rich meals, the wine will gain even more complexity and earthy depth over the next 10+ years.

"Upfront, forward notes of sweet cassis, blackberry, wood spice and vanilla, as well as an impressively textured and layered palate. Seamless, elegant and sexy, this modern styled blend of Grenache and Syrah (aged in 20% new oak) should be ready to go on release and have 7-8 years of longevity."Wine Advocate 88-90 points

Take a great vintage and one of the Southern Rhone's cooler, more limestone-laced, terriors and add in the no-nonsense winemaking of Phlippe Plantevin and you get this very special, very delicious, 2015 Visan.  A blend of 52% Grenache, 26% Syrah, 20% Carignan and 2% Mourvedre made in tank, this really pops in the glass - visually (brilliant deep purple) and on the nose - crushed raspberry, blueberry, violet and chocolate.  On the palate it's the most vivid, energetic, of Philippe's wines and the tangy Carignan blueberry enlivens deep crushed raspberry and blackberry fruit.  A hint of spice and herb add complexity to the flavors and the juicy, finessed, finish drives ripe fruit, earth, and floral flavors across your palate with fine length.  Delicious already and gaining richness over the next 5-8 years, this is superb value.

Dom De La Mordoree Tavel Rose La Dame Rousse 2016 Product #32298 (In Stock)
Dom De La Mordoree Tavel Rose La Dame Rousse 2016 Dom De La Mordoree Tavel Rose La Dame Rousse 2016

As Robert Parker said, “If you haven't discovered, Mordorée continues to make some of the finest dry Rosés available anywhere in the world.”  And this, their flagship Tavel, is simply one of the finest pink wines you’ll be able to find anywhere this season.  The magic starts with 40 year-old plantings of Grenache, Cinsault, Syrah, and Mourvedre - the black grapes for color - and 5% each of Clairette and Bourboulenc - the white grapes for vivacity and freshness.  After harvest, the grapes are crushed and allowed to soak in their juice for 3-4 days to extract flavor and aroma and also a rich, dark, salmon color.

Like any great Tavel, this is more deep, intense, and seriously red wine-like than most rosés you’ve experienced.  Big aromas of ripe strawberries, roses, orange blossom and creamy framboise jump from the glass.  On the palate, its rich, mouthfilling, and creamy in texture with intense berry and floral flavors lifted by a pop of bright acidity and chalky mineral on the long, dry, lipsmacking, finish.  A serious rosé for a contemplative glass of wine on the back deck while the sun sets, or to wow your guests at your next warm-weather dinner party. And don’t forget to put away a few bottles for the holidays, because this is the answer to the age-old question of what to serve at Thanksgiving this year or for 2 or 3 years to come!

"This is a full-bodied, ripe and rich example of Tavel. Flourishes of dried flowers and spices dress up ripe melons and berries, finishing long and warming. It's a rosé tailor made for cool end-of-summer evenings."Wine Enthusiast 91 points

Dom Du Pegau Plan Pégau Rouge Lot 11-12-13 Dom Du Pegau Plan Pégau Rouge Lot 11-12-13

A crazy, very old-school, field-blend red from old vines growing outside of Chateauneuf du Pape.  20-30% each of Grenache, Syrah, and Merlot with the balance an unknown combination of Carignan, Mourvedre, Cinsault, Danlas, Alicante and Cabernet Sauvignon.  This year's release blends lots from vintages 2011, 2012 and 2013 (see the neck label) to deliver a rich, earthy, almost funky, wine with tons of chewy black pepper and a dark-fruited core.

"Aromas of musky red fruit, candied flowers, cured meat and garrigue take on a smoky mineral element in the glass. Sweet and penetrating, offering juicy raspberry and cherry flavors and a zesty jolt of white pepper. Shows very good intensity and fruity punch on the finish, which is shaped by silky, even tannins."  Vinous 90 points

Dom Grand Veneur Lirac Clos De Sixte 2014 Product #31993 (In Stock)
Dom Grand Veneur Lirac Clos De Sixte 2014 Dom Grand Veneur Lirac Clos De Sixte 2014

Until phylloxera arrived in 1863, Lirac was the most important and famous red wine region in all of the Southern Rhone – much more so than Chateauneuf du Pape across the Rhone River to the west.  Wines like this beauty from the Jaume family are helping to make the case for Lirac quality once gain.  As always, the quality starts in the vineyard with low yields, lots of handwork, and certified organic farming of vines growing amidst piles of the rounded Rhone river stones called galet.  The blend – 50% Grenache, 35% Syrah, 15% Mourvedre – and winemaking are almost identical to Grand Veneur’s highly rated Chateauneuf du Papes.  You’ll find loads of Chateauneuf character here - blackberry, raspberry, licorice, black olive, savory herb and more – and also a distinctly Lirac texture:  smooth, open, and almost silky.

"Powerful dark berry, licorice and smoky mineral aromas, along with suave floral and peppery spice accents. Smooth and fleshy on the palate, offering appealingly sweet black raspberry and lavender pastille flavors sharpened by a hint of white pepper. Deftly blends richness and vivacity and finishes long and sweet, with supple tannins lending gentle grip."  Vinous (Raynolds) 91 points
