Montebuena Rioja Cuvee KPF 2015 Product #32442 (In Stock)
Montebuena Rioja Cuvee KPF 2015 Montebuena Rioja Cuvee KPF 2015

The big 90 point rating from Vinous is the kind of praise you expect to find for a $15-$20 Rioja, which makes the everyday $11.99 price a pleasing surprise (and this week’s super $6.98 two-case deal a stunner).  But that’s the kind of value that Wine Enthusiast Importer and Master Sommelier Fran Kysela delivers on a daily basis.  Here, Fran works with Rioja’s Unión de Cosecheros of Labastida to select his own favorite batches – Cuvee KPF – just for the US market.  Unlike some other importers, Fran isn’t trying to create a super-charged, over-ripe, parody of Spanish wine built just to pick up critical points.  Instead, he’s delivered us a very fine, classically-styled, Rioja of nice restraint now and plenty of short-term cellar potential.  As IWC said of a previous release, “it's an excellent value for Rioja.”  Especially at these remarkable savings prices!

“Aged for three months in used American oak barrels. Vivid ruby. Bright, sharply focused aromas of fresh red fruits and flowers, along with a spicy overtone and a hint of vanilla. Lithe and appealingly sweet on the palate, offering vibrant, oak-spiced raspberry and cherry flavors and a subtle rose pastille nuance. Finishes supple and long, displaying silky, slow-building tannins and resonating spiciness.”  Vinous (Raynolds) 90 points

Bodegas Vinsacro Rioja Dioro 2010 Product #31693 (In Stock)
Bodegas Vinsacro Rioja Dioro 2010 Bodegas Vinsacro Rioja Dioro 2010

A delicious wine from an old-fashioned vineyard treated with loving, modern, care. A blend of Temparnillo (50%) Garnacha, Graciano, Mazuelo, Monastrel and Bobal, all planted mixed together in a 70 year-old vineyard at 450-800 meters of altitude and farmed organically.  Dioro represents the best lots from these old vines, aged 12-14 months in new French oak and then further at the winery.  A luxury, $46, wine on release, it’s very much an “affordable luxury” at these prices while it lasts.

"Bright purple. Potent dark berry aromas are complicated by notes of vanilla, pipe tobacco and woodsmoke. Fresh and precise, with densely packed black raspberry and cola flavors that opening nicely with air. Gentle tannins build slowly on the clinging finish, with the raspberry and smoke notes echoing."  Vinous (Raynolds) 91 points

"The 2010 Vinsacro Dioro opens to an explosion of flowers and ripe blueberries that is very perfumed. It feels quite modern and aromatic with well-integrated oak and a luscious palate. This is produced from a field blend they call Vidau, which, in their case it is Garnacha, Tempranillo and a myriad of other grapes like Graciano and even Monastrell. The wine aged in brand new French oak barrels, and it's clearly a high-end wine with aspirations."Wine Advocate 92 points

From the small Rioja village of Tornero ("little calf"), this is a screaming value in easy-drinking Rioja.  100% Tempranillo that shows fresh, bright, red fruit and a lush, round, texture.  Spiced red and black fruit flavors on the mid-palate get a complicating dose of herb and smoke on the generous finish.

Laderas De Cabama Rioja 2012 Product #32391 (In Stock)
Laderas De Cabama Rioja 2012 Laderas De Cabama Rioja 2012

Here's a super pleasing, nicely rich, vibrant and fun Tempranillo with plenty of Rioja smoke and spice to go with ripe blackberry and red berry fruit and smooth, smoky, finish.  Seriously fun with or without food.

"The 2012 Laderas de Cabama is a fresh Tempranillo from youngish vineyards from an extremely dry vintage. It fermented in cement tanks with selected yeasts and matured in French barriques for one year. It shows contained ripeness with a nice mixture of red and black fruit with some spices. The palate is fresher than I expected, with good acidity and very fine tannins. Very drinkable."Wine Advocate 90 points

Biga De Luberri Rioja 2012 Product #31925 (In Stock)

The new release of this perennial 90-91 pionter (Vinous) is 100% Tempranillo aged for a year in French and American oak.  It's a plump, ripe, almost modern-style wine that features dark, spicy, blackberry, black cherry and plum fruit framed by rich chocolate and savory herb notes.  The fruit stays rich and deep as the wine opens and more layers of wood spice, vanilla and chocolate emerge.  Dry and lightly tannic on the finish, a fun sipper and great match for grilled/roasted food.

Tentenublo Rioja Cosecha 2015 Product #32457 (In Stock)

Wow, this blend of Tempranilla and Garnacha, co-fermented in concrete and aged 5 months in chestnut cask, is really, really, GOOD.  Loads of luscious red raspberry and plum that turn extra ripe and kirsch-like on the lightly tannic finish.  The blend of freshness and ripeness is intoxicating (in a good way!) and the barrel gives just enough spice for interest.  "Tentenublo" is the Rioja term for the ringing of church bells to try to scare off hail.  Wonderfully delicious right now.

Bodegas Roda Sela Rioja 2012 Product #32390 (In Stock)
Bodegas Roda Sela Rioja 2012 Bodegas Roda Sela Rioja 2012

"Very aromatic with lavender, mushroom, stone and dark fruits on the nose. Full body, ultra-fine tannins and a long, long finish. Fermented in large French oak vats. Finesse here. Drink or hold. 96% tempranillo, 3% graciano, 1% garnacha. A beauty from a beautiful year." James Suckling 93 points

"Fragrant aromas of ripe red berries, candied rose and incense. Spicy and penetrating in the mouth, offering juicy flavors of raspberry, bitter cherry and allspice. Shows very good focus and lift--and repeating red fruit and floral notes--on the long, gently tannic finish. This wine went through its secondary fermentation in large French oak foudres and was then moved into small, used French oak barrels for another year." Vinous (Raynolds) 91 points

"The 2012 Sela will be released in March 2015, and it’s a great example of Sela. It opens to bright red fruit, more shiny than 2011, and is still pretty young showing faint lactic notes and more traces of the barrel that should be absorbed with time. 2012 could be fresher and more accessible. It’s an elegant and balanced wine, with some fine-grained tannins that will be polished with bottle age. The palate is very tasty and has almost salty flavors that are quite gentle and velvety. In 2012 Sela was a blend of Tempranillo with 3% Graciano and 1% Garnacha. 99,383 bottles were produced."Wine Advocate 90 points

Vina Tondonia Rioja Reserva 2005 Product #32399 (In Stock)
Vina Tondonia Rioja Reserva 2005 Vina Tondonia Rioja Reserva 2005

As classic as they come and about as beautiful as Rioja gets.

"Lovely depth of fruit to this mature red with chocolate, dark tea and bark. Purple flowers and violets. Full and very silky and refined. A beautiful traditional wine to get to know. Drink now."  James Suckling 94 points

"The 2005 Viña Tondonia Reserva is a blend of 70% Tempranillo, 20% Garnacho, 5% Graciano and 5% Mazuelo from their vineyards in the meander of the Ebro River, where they have some 100 hectares of vineyards. The wine fermented in the original oak vats that are now some 140 years of age. There is no temperature control and malolactic was also in the vat. The wine was transferred to oak barrels where it slowly matured in their deep, humid caves for no less than six years. After this, it was bottled unfiltered after being fined with egg whites. I think the quality gap between the Reserva and Gran Reserva has been getting smaller since the 2001 vintage and this 2005 is nothing short of exceptional. It's clean and complex, with more freshness. The wine is very spicy and with a palate that feels very balanced, livelier than in the past. It has a long finish where the flavors are clean. Easy to drink and very pleasurable."Wine Advocate 93 points
