Usoa De Bagordi Rioja Rosado 2017 Product #33243 (In Stock)

If you think Spanish rose has to be dark, fat and a little syrupy, then you've got to try this beauty.  It's 100% Garnacha, picked while the acids are still fresh, allowed to soak on the skins for 18 hours and then pressed off for fermentation in tank. It's full of Sangria-like fruit - cherry, strawberry, green melon- and shows a creamy, round, texture in the middle. Then tart Granny Smith apple and a squeeze of lemony citrus clean things up on the dry, brisk, finish.  Very fun.

Lopez De Haro Rioja Reserva 2012 Lopez De Haro Rioja Reserva 2012

Despite the old-sounding name, this relatively new estate has excelled at delivering traditionally-styled Rioja at bargain basement prices. This is 90% Tempranillo, 5% Granacha and 5% Graciano aged 20 months in mostly used French and American oak casks. You'll see the time in wood by the pale rim and feel it in the smooth, rounded, mouthfeel.  Dark black fruit aromas and flavors are complicated by notes of sweet spice, balsamic, and a hint of vanilla.  Finishes smooth and earthy with fine complexity.

Mencos Rioja 2013 Mencos Rioja 2013

If you like the darker, earthier, plusher style of Rioja, then here's a bargain for you that's ready to drink tonight.  From 35 year-old Tempranillo vines, this showcases deep red and black fruit character (think plums, blackberries, and black raspberries) with a generous dose of rich chocolate and exotic spice.  A note of crushed violet comes up on the chocolaty smooth finish to enliven the lingering dark, earthy fruit and spice flavors.  A fine value for sipping, steak and lamb.

Familia Montana Reserva Rioja 2012 Product #33095 (In Stock)
Familia Montana Reserva Rioja 2012 Familia Montana Reserva Rioja 2012

From a very old Rioja family that has somehow avoided the limelight - at least until now!  Because they've grown fruit in Rioja since the late 19th Century, their vineyards show a fairly high vine age and they've clung to their old-school, square-edged, bottle.  The old vines give good richness to this Tempranillo with 3% Graciano for spice.  The 12 months in French oak shows as a chocolaty spice to the dark black plum and blackberry fruit.  Plush, rich and spicy and ready to drink today (or for a decade).

Hacienda Ternero Rioja Blanco En Barrica 2015 Product #33006 (In Stock)

From an interesting micro-climate in Rioja perched at 650 meters height with warm, sunny, days and nights chilled by cold air flowing down the Obarenes mountains. The white grape Viura does very well here, especially with barrel fermentation.  Vibrant green apple and peach aromas and flavors are lifted by a touch of lemon/lime.  The French oak is nicely gauged, rounding the texture and adding just a hint of vanilla and spice to the tangy fruit finish.  Lovely seafood wine here, or try with fresh vegetables.

Laderas De Cabama Rioja 2012 Product #32391 (In Stock)
Laderas De Cabama Rioja 2012 Laderas De Cabama Rioja 2012

Here's a super pleasing, nicely rich, vibrant and fun Tempranillo with plenty of Rioja smoke and spice to go with ripe blackberry and red berry fruit and smooth, smoky, finish.  Seriously fun with or without food.

"The 2012 Laderas de Cabama is a fresh Tempranillo from youngish vineyards from an extremely dry vintage. It fermented in cement tanks with selected yeasts and matured in French barriques for one year. It shows contained ripeness with a nice mixture of red and black fruit with some spices. The palate is fresher than I expected, with good acidity and very fine tannins. Very drinkable."Wine Advocate 90 points

Lopez De Heredia Rioja Vina Cubillo Crianza 2008 Product #33041 (In Stock)

"Brilliant ruby-red. Aromas of fresh red berries, cherry pit and pungent herbs, joined in the glass by subtle vanilla and herb nuances. Juicy and focused on the palate, offering lively red currant and bitter cherry flavors that flesh out on the back half. In an energetic style, showing very good finishing energy and smooth tannins framing lingering red fruit."  Vinous (Raynolds) 91 points

"A blend of 70% Tempranillo, 20% Garnacha, 5% Graciano and 5% Mazuelo from 50-year-old vines that ferments in ancient oak vats, and ages in barrel for three years. This cuvée has increased its quality tremendously since the 1990s. These cooler years provide citric freshness, and a very fine texture and vibrant acidity. This is so easy to drink that it can be dangerous. This was the Rioja clarete fino--the everyday red. It's both elegant and powerful. Very good value, too."Wine Spectator 92 points

Bodegas Roda Sela Rioja 2014 Product #33129 (In Stock)
Bodegas Roda Sela Rioja 2014 Bodegas Roda Sela Rioja 2014

From one of Rioja's great estates, a project dedicated to making "modern classics."  "Modern" here doesn't mean over-ripe fruit or heavy doses of sweet French oak.  Instead it means healthy, careful, farming, fermentation in open wood vats, and slow barrel aging in scrupulously clean condition. Sela is the estate's "young vine" wine (if 15-25 year-old vines are "young"!).  It's Tempranillo with splashes of Graciano and Garnacha aged in used French oak.  Lovely perfume and purity now and already gaining classic Rioja complexity and purity.  Brilliant with lamb!

"An easy to drink and fresh blend of 93% Tempranillo with 5% Graciano and 2% Garnacha. The key for 2014 was the selection of grapes (and the previous work in the vineyard, of course) because it was not easy: it was dry and warm but rained during the summer and the harvest, and there was some heat, which resulted in lots of botrytis. The wine fermented with indigenous yeasts in French oak vats, followed by one year in second and third use French barriques. They first produced this in 2008, as the vines they planted when the winery started were coming of age, and they used vines between 15 and 30 years of age. It's quite fruit forward, open and clean, with good ripeness and freshness, a success for the conditions of the harvest. The palate is fine and balanced, with a soft texture, fresh and accessible."Wine Advocate 91 points

Bodegas Roda Sela Rioja 2012 Product #32390 (In Stock)
Bodegas Roda Sela Rioja 2012 Bodegas Roda Sela Rioja 2012

This younger-vine cuvee of Roda I scratches the super-premium Rioja itch at a very nice price.  Smooth, rich and deep.

"Very aromatic with lavender, mushroom, stone and dark fruits on the nose. Full body, ultra-fine tannins and a long, long finish. Fermented in large French oak vats. Finesse here. Drink or hold. 96% tempranillo, 3% graciano, 1% garnacha. A beauty from a beautiful year." James Suckling 93 points

"Fragrant aromas of ripe red berries, candied rose and incense. Spicy and penetrating in the mouth, offering juicy flavors of raspberry, bitter cherry and allspice. Shows very good focus and lift--and repeating red fruit and floral notes--on the long, gently tannic finish. This wine went through its secondary fermentation in large French oak foudres and was then moved into small, used French oak barrels for another year." Vinous (Raynolds) 91 points

"The 2012 Sela will be released in March 2015, and it’s a great example of Sela. It opens to bright red fruit, more shiny than 2011, and is still pretty young showing faint lactic notes and more traces of the barrel that should be absorbed with time. 2012 could be fresher and more accessible. It’s an elegant and balanced wine, with some fine-grained tannins that will be polished with bottle age. The palate is very tasty and has almost salty flavors that are quite gentle and velvety. In 2012 Sela was a blend of Tempranillo with 3% Graciano and 1% Garnacha. 99,383 bottles were produced."Wine Advocate 90 points

Bodegas Remelluri Reserva Rioja 2010 Product #32701 (In Stock)
Bodegas Remelluri Reserva Rioja 2010 Bodegas Remelluri Reserva Rioja 2010

From the great 2010 harvest, this is 100% estate-grown fruit, blending Tempranillo (about 90%) with Garnacha, Graciano and white grapes Viura and Malvasía Riojana.  Aging a full 17 months in (mostly used) French oak casks of different sizes and five years more in bottle created a modern masterpiece, a wine of fine depth and excellent lift that marries easy  to love fruit with complex layers of spice and earth.

"A wine with beautiful finesse and depth. Dark fruits, dark chocolate, hazelnut and floral character. Polished and refined. Full body. Long and beautiful. Tasty finish. "  James Suckling 95 points

"From an almost perfect growing season. The nose has earthy aromas and notes of ripe orange peel giving old-style character to the wine marked by very well-integrated oak and an obvious Rioja character. There are cherries, plums and spices with licorice and ink aromas. The day after, it has more strawberries with very good freshness, so the evolution in bottle should be good. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins and good acidity that ends with sweet fruit flavors and something earthy, very pleasant and easy to drink. It grows on you."Wine Advocate 93 points

Vinedos Del Contino Rioja Reserva 2010 Vinedos Del Contino Rioja Reserva 2010

A supple, elegant, classic for lamb and roasts.

"A heady, expansive bouquet evokes ripe red and dark berries, cherry compote, vanilla and cigar box, and a sexy floral nuance emerges slowly. Smooth and seamless on the palate, offering sweet, concentrated blackberry, cherry-vanilla and mocha flavors that are firmed and given spine by a core of juicy acidity. Rich yet vibrant in style, displaying impressive finishing clarity, smooth tannins and a lingering spicecake flourish."  Vinous (Raynolds) 93 points

"The 2010 Reserva is a textbook Rioja, and in fact it surprised me with a very classic profile. This is usually a blend of 85% Tempranillo with 10% Graciano and 5% between Mazuelo and Garnacha; it fermented in stainless steel and matured in 50/50 French and American oak barrels for two years. It's a subtle vintage with very fine tannins. 2010 is a very good year for Rioja in general, but in Contino they consider it exceptional. This feels polished and developed with some forest floor and cigar box aromas. Very drinkable."Wine Advocate 93 points

"This plump red shows black cherry and red plum fruit, with tobacco, cedar, tea and spice accents, supported by light tannins and orange peel acidity. Nicely balanced, in the traditional style."Wine Spectator 91 points

More powerful and structured than the 2004, it still manages to be light on its feet, offering up plenty of succulent black fruit flavors, incipient complexity, and a 45-second finish.
