Il Bastardo Sangiovese Toscana 2016 Product #32638 (In Stock)
Il Bastardo Sangiovese Toscana 2016 Il Bastardo Sangiovese Toscana 2016

In Wood Case While It Lasts!  A fun, flavorful, and fine value Tuscan Sangiovese made by winemaker Paolo Masi at Tuscany’s Renzo Masi winery from grapes grown near Florence and Chianti Ruffina.  The Masi family’s Fattoria di Basciano has been hailed by Wine Advocate as “one of the rising stars of Rufina,” and their Renzo Masi project was designed to use friends’ and neighbors’ grapes to make “wines with vibrant territorial personality."  This special project by the Masi’s for importer Bob Shack does that in spades and at a fantastic value price to boot!

Ripe aromas and flavors of cherry and red berry start off bright and fresh and then get darker with a little air. The juicy acidity and light tannins make this easy to just sip, but give it enough substance to enjoy with pizza, burgers, or a big bowl of pasta and red sauce.  There's enough going on here to hold your interest through a few glasses and - especially at this price - tempt you to open a second bottle as the night goes on.  Fun stuff and fantastic value.

La Lecciaia Lupaia Toscana 2014 Product #32524 (In Stock)
La Lecciaia Lupaia Toscana 2014 La Lecciaia Lupaia Toscana 2014

A fine little super-Tuscan blend from Brunello producer La Lecciaia.  Mainly Sangiovese with dollops of Cabernet Sauvingnon and Merlot, this opens with bold, earthy, aromas of ripe cherry and raspberry framed by notes of leather and crushed herb.  Fleshy and full on the palate, where subtle spice notes join the bold dark fruit flavors.  Finishes with zesty energy and fine tannins, making this fun to sip and a great choice for the classic Italian table.  A lot of wine for the money!

Poggio Alloro Vernaccia Nicchiaio 2015 Product #31024 (In Stock)
Poggio Alloro Vernaccia Nicchiaio 2015 Poggio Alloro Vernaccia Nicchiaio 2015

From vineyards in the shadow of the towers of San Gimignano, this is Vernacchia harvested a bit later and given more time on the lees in barrel than Poggio Alloro's "regular" bottling.  Rich, nutty, aromas of acacia flower and stone fruit lead to a palate at once rich and bright.  Layered flavors of sweet pear, apricot, toasted nut and a hint of herb honey are lifted by juicy acids and linger with a hint of mineral across a long, building, finish.

Note: this is a special-order wine. Filling orders for this wine typically takes 2-3 days.

Bardellini Vermentino U Munte 2015 Product #32279 (In Stock)
Bardellini Vermentino U Munte 2015 Bardellini Vermentino U Munte 2015

Vermentino needs an unusual combination of conditions to be interesting.  It needs plenty of warmth and sunshine to ripen, but also cool nights to lock in acidity and stay fresh.  That's exactly what Colle dei Bardellini's vineyards in Liguria, east of Monaco and near the Cinque Terre deliver.  From 1,000 feet above sea level, this explodes with green fruit, lime zest, and lots of salty, seafood-friendly, minerality.  Refreshing, lip-smacking, fun!

Casaloste Rosso Maniero Toscana IGT 2014 Product #32304 (In Stock)
Casaloste Rosso Maniero Toscana IGT 2014 Casaloste Rosso Maniero Toscana IGT 2014

This could almost be labeled Chianti Classico (and actually has some declassified Chianti juice in it), but with just 65% Sangiovese, it's a tad under the minimum.  The 35% other grapes - mainly Merlot and Canaiolo - soften Sangiovese's bite and add a nice layer of richness and depth to this all tank blend.  Dark cherry and bitter chocolate aromas and flavors get a nice lift from lemony acidity and fresh, juicy, raspberry.  There's enough structure and weight to make this a great table wine but it's supple enough to just sip, too.

Voliero Rosso Di Montalcino 2015 Product #32382 (In Stock)
Voliero Rosso Di Montalcino 2015 Voliero Rosso Di Montalcino 2015

We sometimes think of Rosso di Montalcino as "baby Brunello," and some winemakers craft their Rosso in that style:  rich, dark, powerful and structured if just a touch less deep than Brunello.  But Andrea Cortonesi’s Voliero Rosso di Montalcino 2015 is something different.  It certainly captures the dark fruit and layered complexity of Sangiovese Grosso grown in the sandier soils of Montalino's norther vineyards.  But this is no "almost Brunello" - instead, it's a wine of unique purity, grace and even finesse that is uniquely Rosso.

It's also really, really, delicious!  Aromas of crushed berries, violets, spice and fresh leather all waft from the glass with the fruit getting darker and more prominent with air. In the mouth it glides across your palate with beautifully purity and deftness, layering fresh raspberry and cherry fruit with floral, spice and fresh earth accents. On the finish, the sweet fruit keeps on singing out over very fine, ripe, tannins and tangy cherry juice acidity.  Although the aromas and flavors are very Montalcino, the texture and freshness resemble a top Willamette Valley Pinot Noir, and this will work like that with salmon, grilled beef, and mushroom dishes.

Montenidoli Fiore Vernaccia Di San Gimignano 2015 Product #32931 (In Stock)

There's a nice review from Wine Advocate here, but it only hints at the excitement we felt on tasting Elisabetta Fagiuoli's stunning and crazy good Vernaccia.  Because we simply had no idea that Tuscany's most important white grape could make wine this fantastically good.  There's a Riesling-like character to the minerality and core of ripe green apple and stone fruit and then Sancerre-like minerality, cut and vibrancy.  In all the years Wine Advocate has reviewed Italian wines, only 17 Vernaccia Di San Gimignano have earned higher ratings.  And Elisabetta made about a third of those.  You really need to try this wine!

"The 2015 Vernaccia di San Gimignano Fiore offers steady and clean aromas of saffron, white peach and juicy Golden Delicious apple. Delicate notes of crushed flint and granite fill in the rear. This is a clean and refreshing wine but it also offers the complexity and layering that distinguishes this specific wine within a group of peers. Winemaking is simple: it is fermented in stainless steel and goes directly into bottle with no oak contact."Wine Advocate 91 points

Montenidoli Toscana Rosso Sono Montenidoli 2015 Product #32932 (In Stock)

One of Tuscany's most famed estates - but only in Italy and mainly among the lucky few who met the late Sergio Muratori and Elisabetta Fagiuoli, Sergio's very much alive cofounder and creator of Montenidoli in the Chianti hills not far from San Gimignano.  The 24ha acres of vines are nestled into 250ha of woodlands, rising from ancient seabed soils at the base to blood-red, iron-rich, remnants of the Triassic period at the top of the hill.  These are the oldest soils in Tuscany and the only place they are planted to vine.

Elisabetta's Sangiovese grows naturally (only a little copper or sulfur as needed) in the poor red soils, ripening stunning cherry and strawberry fruit flavors while sucking up and sharing layer up on layer of iron ore minerality.  Aging a year in neutral oak gives the wine some roundness, but the tannins here are still classically firm and mouthcoating - the kind of big mouthful of tannin that's satisfying and mouthwatering, not hard or bitter.  The wine's delicious and rare and priced far, far, below its value.  Try it.
