An Italian blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Sangiovese that would be a $20 "super-Tuscan" - if only it didn't come from neighboring Umbria!  This is rich and round with dark cherry and red currant fruit, moderate acidity and nicely chewy tannins.  Turns spicier and smoother with air, making this a great choice for everything from cookouts to spaghetti dinners to cool weather parties.

Perticaia Umbria Rosso 2016 Product #32940 (In Stock)

From the relatively young estate of Perticaia, created as a "retirement" gig by old Tuscan hand Guido Guardigli comes this delicious, goes-with-everything red.  He launched this new estate with his family in land-locked Umbria, naming it for the dialect word for "plow" - and just as the plow helped Umbria to prosperity by transforming from a grazing to farming region, Guido hopes his estate will "open the earth" to exciting new wines.

His entry-level red is a joy, fresh and fruity with deep aromas and flavors of black cherry, juicy raspberry, and a dash of sweet spice.  Sangiovese (80%) provides the core of fruit and a zesty structure while Colorino and Merlot (10% each) soften up the finish and add top- and base-notes, respectively.  A great pizza/salami/grilled sausage wine that gets richer and more intensely fruited with air or brighter and fresher with a light chill.  Much more interesting than 90% of wine labeled “Chianti” at this price!

Montefalco Rosso is more or less Umbria's answer to Chianti - a blend of mostly local grapes that delivers robust flavors and a food-friendly structure for beef, pork and cured meats.  This is 70% Sangiovese, 15% Sagrantino and 15% Merlot, all from the super-ripe 2011 vintage.  Aging 12 months in used French oak smooths out some edges here but doesn't hide the dark cherry and raspberry fruit.  A bit of spice and vanilla adds interest and the chewy tannins offers perfect support!
