Elk Cove Pinot Noir Willamette 2015 375ml Elk Cove Pinot Noir Willamette 2015 375ml

A nicely mellow and smooth Pinot.

"Pale to medium ruby-purple in color, the 2015 Pinot Noir offers up notes of black cherries and black raspberries with touches of chocolate box, dried herbs and cinnamon stick. Medium-bodied, the palate features a well-played texture of grainy tannins and just enough freshness to lift the black cherry-led flavors, finishing with a pleasant earthiness."Wine Advocate 89 points

Ponzi Pinot Gris Willamette Valley 2016 Product #32874 (In Stock)
Ponzi Pinot Gris Willamette Valley 2016 Ponzi Pinot Gris Willamette Valley 2016

A satisfying Chehalem Mountain Pinot Gris from one of Oregon's founding producers.  On the  nose, you'll find aromas of white flowers like magnolias, lime zest, and a hint of white tea.  There's a pleasing richness here, with apple and pear fruit gaining some spicy complexity in the middle and all cleaned up by fresh citrus flavors.  Perfect as a standalone sipper or with Indian or Vietnamese food!

"This is done in a crisp, fresh and leesy style, with lime-drenched minerality. Flavors of white peach and guava gain volume and density as the wine warms on the palate. It was kept from malolactic fermentation, enlivening a lingering, resonant finish."Wine Enthusiast 91 points

Amalie Robert Chardonnay Her Silhouette 2016 Amalie Robert Chardonnay Her Silhouette 2016

From a great Oregon Chardonnay vintage, this is a delicious, mouthwatering, blend of  Dijon clone 76 and 95 Chard made in tank with no malolactic fermentation.  Crisp green and red apple fruit gets depth from a bit of ripe stone fruit and zip from notes of Meyer lemon and Key lime.  Finishes generous and long with apple and stone fruit lingering nicely.  No oak, no malo, no kidding: delicious Chardonnay!

"High-pitched Meyer lemon and green apple aromas are complemented by suave jasmine and zesty mineral notes. Tangy and focused on the palate, offering bitter citrus zest and pear skin flavors that pick up a gingery accent with air. Shows a hint of fennel on the finish, which lingers with strong, subtly sweet tenacity."  Vinous (Raynolds) 91 points

Patricia Green Pinot Noir Reserve 2016 Product #33147 (In Stock)
Patricia Green Pinot Noir Reserve 2016 Patricia Green Pinot Noir Reserve 2016

Note that this is already SOLD OUT at the winery and won't last long here. This has been one of the best values in Willamette Valley Pinot Noir for years, but in 2016 it really soars. It's a blend of more forward barrels from vineyards in Ribbon Ridge, the Chehalem Mountains, the Dundee Hills and Freedom Hill. It's ready right now and will age much longer than you'd expect from a wine at this price point.  As Jim wrote about the 2015, “There are seriously great bones here and this wine will stand up to many, many much higher priced bottlings… In short, this wine is a smoking deal!!

“Spice-tinged raspberry and cherry aromas are complicated by cola, floral and smoky mineral notes. Sweet and focused on the palate, offering energetic red berry flavors and suggestions of rose pastille and blood orange that build with air. Vibrant and precise in style, delivering solid finishing cut, interwoven tannins and impressive, spicy persistence.”  Vinous (Raynolds) 91 points

Arterberry Maresh Pinot Noir Dundee Hills 2015 Product #32437 (In Stock)
Arterberry Maresh Pinot Noir Dundee Hills 2015 Arterberry Maresh Pinot Noir Dundee Hills 2015

Jim Maresh’s focus is on single vineyard Pinot Noir, so in most years, he sells off any barrels or lots that don’t make it into the final single vineyard cuvee.  In excellent years, though, that wine is just too good to part with, so he supplements it with fruit from neighbors and bottles this wine:  the Dundee Hills cuvee.  The 2014 was the first release of the Dundee Hills bottling in a few years.  It was a fine, 90-point, gem that Wine Advocate called “probably the bargain of the vintage."  The 2015 is better.

Oregon’s 2015 vintage looked and felt a lot like 2014 – warm weather, big harvest, bold fruit.  The difference is that the 2015s have better structure and style, both of which are on display here.  You’ll find ripe, dark red, fruit on the nose here with accents of blood orange and subtle smoke.  Wonderfully generous and vivid in the mouth, the dark cherry and plum fruit expands and coats your palate before savory notes of licorice and mushroom come in on the back.  The flavors linger nicely over fine, silky smooth, tannins that promise delight with food and 7-10 years improvement in cellar.  Terrific, delicious, stuff.

"Highly perfumed red berry preserve, Asian spice and rose oil aromas are lent vivacity by a smoky mineral nuance. Silky, expansive raspberry, bitter cherry and spicecake flavors show very good energy and pick up a smoky flourish with aeration. Finishes juicy, gently sweet and quite long, featuring lingering red fruit flavors and discreet tannins."  Vinous (Raynolds) 91 points

Walter Scott Pinot Noir La Combe Verte 2016 Product #32997 (In Stock)
Walter Scott Pinot Noir La Combe Verte 2016 Walter Scott Pinot Noir La Combe Verte 2016

Pretty stupid good, the kind of Pinot that draws you in and then leaves you hearing yourself saying, “Wow!”  It’s mostly Eola Hills fruit with a few barrels of wine from Freedom Hill and a Dundee Hills site for depth and heft.  About 15% whole cluster fermentation adds spice and 30% new French oak gives extra smoky complexity and a soft, supple, mouthfeel.  There’s plenty of fruit here – you don’t have to work to “get” it – but also real complexity and potential to improve further still over the next 5 or so years.

“Spice-accented dark berries, cherry cola, Indian spices and woodsmoke on the nose, along with a subtle floral nuance. Shapely and supple on the palate, offering concentrated black raspberry, spicecake and rose pastille flavors and a sweetening mocha note. Finishes smoky and pliant, featuring gentle, slowly-mounting tannins and a strong echo of juicy dark fruit.”  Vinous (Raynolds) 91 points

"“Zesty and savory, with lively, smoky cherry aromas and layered raspberry, white pepper and orange peel flavors that linger toward refined tannins. Drink now through 2024. 1,250 cases made.”Wine Spectator 91 points

St Innocent Pinot Noir Willamette Villages Cuvee 2016 Product #33263 (In Stock)
St Innocent Pinot Noir Willamette Villages Cuvee 2016 St Innocent Pinot Noir Willamette Villages Cuvee 2016

Always one of the greatest values in Willamette Valley Pinot Noir, the 2016 is another home run. It's mainly from the fine Vitae Springs Vineyard this year with dashes of fruit from other top vineyard sites.  A warm fermentation and gentle pump-overs extract richness and give the wine a velvet feel.  A year in mostly used oak rounds off the edges and adds just a touch of subtle spice.  A lovely example of marine sedimentary Pinot.

"Spice-accented raspberry, cherry and rose scents show a hint of underbrush in the background. Juicy and light on its feet, offering lively red berry and spicecake flavors that put on weight as the wine opens up. Fine-grained tannins sneak in late on the long, smooth finish, which leaves behind a jammy red fruit liqueur note."  Vinous (Raynolds) 90 points

Amalie Robert Pinot Meunier 2015 Product #32607 (In Stock)
Amalie Robert Pinot Meunier 2015 Amalie Robert Pinot Meunier 2015

A "failed" experiment (well, "abandoned," anyway) with sparkling wine left Ernie Pink and Dena Drews with a few acres of Pinot Meunier that's just too good to abandon.  So they make this delicious red from it - based on the huge 92 point rating for the 2014, it's one of the finest still red Pinot Meuniers in the world!

The 2015 picks up where that stunner left off. This is a pretty wine in the glass, with a translucent red brick color you can easily see through.  Inviting aromas of red cherry, sweet strawberry, and candied rose petal pull you in to ripe, vibrant, flavors of bitter cherry, crushed raspberry, and a beguiling floral/anise note on the finish.  Nice tension between the sweet fruit and tart acids and just enough fine tannin to make this easy to enjoy with all kinds of food.

Belle Pente Chardonnay Belle Pente Vyd 2012 Product #31772 (In Stock)
Belle Pente Chardonnay Belle Pente Vyd 2012 Belle Pente Chardonnay Belle Pente Vyd 2012

We thought Brian O'Donnell's 2010 Chardonnay was about as fine an Oregon white as we'd ever come across.  The 2012 - from perhaps the Willamette Valley's best vintage ever - is better still.  The grapes are from a 1999 planting in a small, 2 acre, plot of Belle Pente's steeply sloped Yamhill-Carleton vineyard.  Brian harvests the fruit in two passes, one early for freshness and one later for richness and flavor intensity.  Fermentation is in barrel (about 10% new), with half made of fine French oak and half from Oregon oak which Brian thinks brings out more fruit character.

The 364 cases of 2012 Chardonnay came out very well indeed. Rich aromas of pear, yellow apple and toasted hazelnut lead to a fleshy, full-bodied, palate of ripe orchard fruit and buttered nut with just a hint of tropical pineapple.  The finish is long and nutty with buttered apple flavors lingering over a light dusting of crushed stone.  Delicious stuff now - 2022 (at least)!

"This displays the immaculate freshness of all the Eyrie white wines, with an extra serving of phenolic bite. There's a sense of real depth to the gooseberry, grapefruit and pineapple flavors. Patricia Green Pinot Noir Freedom Hill 2016 Product #33148 (In Stock)
Patricia Green Pinot Noir Freedom Hill 2016 Patricia Green Pinot Noir Freedom Hill 2016

What’s the greatest vineyard in Oregon’s Willamette Valley?  For years the most common answer would have been Seven Springs or Shea.  But today the 88 acres of vines planted on Freedom Hill, just outside Dallas, Oregon, is in contention for that honor.  As winemaker Jim Anderson says, this is “almost Eola-Amity,” sharing the western side of the AVA’s marine sedimentary soils but escaping some of the cold air that flows inland through the Van Duzer Corridor every afternoon.  Which means Freedom Hill Pinot Noir has the perfect blend of sedimentary soil vivacity and energy and warm site richness and power.

Jim Anderson and Patricia Green got their first fruit from Freedom Hill in vintage 2012, and they made what is clearly a benchmark interpretation of this great site.  In 2016, the wine blends fruit from blocks of Pommard, Dijon 115 and Coury clones of Pinot Noir and layers in a big dose of whole cluster spice and structure and about 25% new French oak. Clear, pure, black raspberry fruit plus notes of licorice, violets, and cola show on the nose and palate and the finish is long, persistent, and nicely structured.  Delicious with duck or mushrooms today and improving for a decade at least.

Amalie Robert Pinot Meunier 2014 Product #30994 (In Stock)
Amalie Robert Pinot Meunier 2014 Amalie Robert Pinot Meunier 2014

Pinot Meunier's home is Champagne, where it's the region's most planted grape and makes up the heart of many a fine toasty, rich, sparkling wine.  As an abandoned sparkling wine experiment, Amalie Robert's version is arguably the most consistently excellent example in the world with a string of 90 and 91 point ratings from Wine Advocate, Josh Raynolds at Vinous, and more.

As you'd expect in a Champagne grape, there's a bit of tartness here and I always find it a bit tight and tingly on release.  In warm vintages - like 2014 - it opens quickly, and if you tried it when Dena and Ernie were here in July you'll be shocked at how much flesh it's gained in 45 days.  I like Ernie's tasting note so much, I'll quote it here:  "Delish red. Sweet aromas of ripe Montmorency cherries, red currants and bittersweet chocolate entice the palate into a rosy red fruit mélange intertwined with savory bits and restraining acidity that linger effortlessly. This wine is as elegant as the day is long."
