Ch Recougne Bordeaux Superieur 2011 375ml Ch Recougne Bordeaux Superieur 2011 375ml

Half Bottles!  Perfect for an evening sip.

"A winner from the Milhade family, Chateau Recougne has a reputation for lasting 20-30 years in the bottle in many vintages. I do not think the 2011 has that much staying power, but it over-delivers in body, richness, density and length. It is a shockingly good effort displaying a dark ruby color as well as abundant notes of earth, licorice and black currants, surprising body, richness and depth. A major sleeper of the vintage, it should drink well for 7-8 years."Wine Advocate 88 points

Cheval Noir Saint Emilion 2013 375ml Product #31784 (In Stock)

Alas, this doesn't have anything to do with Ch Cheval-Blanc, but it is a very tasty, drink me now, Bordeaux!  From purchased fruit, it's a blend of 70% Merlot and 30% Cabernet Franc aged in tank.  Classic Bordeaux aromas and flavors of red currant, cherry, cedar and crushed herb with medium-bodied weight and a touch of dusty tannin at the end. A great match for lighter foods and lean meats.

Ch Haut-Pasquet Bordeaux Blanc 2015 Product #30677 (In Stock)
Ch Haut-Pasquet Bordeaux Blanc 2015 Ch Haut-Pasquet Bordeaux Blanc 2015

Back in the old days, pretty much all white Bordeaux was a blend of the region’s three complementary grapes:  Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon, and Muscadelle.  As Loire Valley and New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc became more popular in the 1980s, Bordeaux growers began phasing out first Muscadelle (too hard to grow) and then Semillon (usually pulled up in favor of Cabernet and Merlot).  The resulting Sauvignon-dominant (or 100% Sauvignon) white Bordeauxs can be a lot of refreshing, pool-side, fun – but they lack more traditional wine’s complexity of flavors and mellow, food-friendly, textures.

So, finding a traditional blend like this one is a real treat, especially at this great value price.  Give it a swirl and you’ll find a classic white Bordeaux nose of lemon/tangerine fruit, grapefruit pith, a bit of fresh mown grass, and the note of wet wool that Semillon brings to Bordeaux.  With air, a note of passion fruit and crushed savory herb emerges.  It’s light to medium-bodied and very fresh and happy in the mouth with flavors of lemon drop, tangerine, crushed herb and passion fruit puree.  On the finish, the fresh lemon and lime zest character comes forward and you’ll notice your mouth watering as the lemon and herb flavors linger on.   A lovely wine for any shellfish and herb dish or for salads with goat cheese.

Ch La Roche St. Jean Bordeaux Rouge 2015 Product #31344 (In Stock)
Ch La Roche St. Jean Bordeaux Rouge 2015 Ch La Roche St. Jean Bordeaux Rouge 2015

We’ve been fans of this small (for Bordeaux) family estate for years but the 2015 steps up the quality to an entirely new level! It’s a blend of un-oaked Merlot (70%) and Cabernet Sauvignon (30%) from the sand, clay and limestone soils of Bordeaux’s Entre Deux Mers region – part of the “Right Bank” that excelled in the outstanding 2015 vintage.

You'll find it deliciously fresh and fun from the first pour and sip, but the real fun comes over the next few hours (or days), as the aromas and flavors get deeper and darker, with black currant, cedar, and dark chocolate holding center stage and classic Bordeaux notes of cedar, tobacco and crushed herb emerging on top.  The texture stays wonderful throughout - mouthfilling and dense enough to demand attention but never heavy or thick or plodding.  And the finish just keeps getting better and better, smooth and long with lingering flavors of fruit, cedar, chocolate and spice.  Hard to resist right this second, but do yourself a favor and lay some down and then pull a bottle out for a special dinner up to 10 years from now.  No one will ever believe what you paid!

Enate Somontano Cabernet Merlot 2013 Enate Somontano Cabernet Merlot 2013

We don't see much wine from Spain's Somontano DO in the foothills of the Pyrenees to the east of Campo de Borja.  Warm days and cool nights allow Bordeaux varietals to do well here, as this Cab/Merlot blend demonstrates.  There's generous blackcurrant and dark berry fruit here with a layer of spice from 6 months in barrel.  Finishes spicy and with dark fruit and a hint of cola.  A fine cookout red!

Peirano Estate The Other Red Lodi 2013 Peirano Estate The Other Red Lodi 2013

Not quite sure about the label, but there's definitely some sex-appeal to this big, rich, red.  A blend of Cabernet  Sauvignon, Merlot, and Syrah from California's Lodi region, this pumps out big aromas and flavors of black cherry, red plum, blackcurrant and more with subtle accents of herb and oak spice.  Creamy and mouthfilling for sure, but not heavy (just 13.7% abv) and finishing juicy and fresh with a notes of pomegranate, cherry, vanilla and spice lingering.  Fun stuff!

Mostly Merlot, with 10% Carmenere and 5% Petit Verdot for color and structure.  Unusually - at least at this price point - the wine ages entirely in new and 1 year-old oak casks for a year.  A richly fruit-filled Bordeaux - cherry, cassis, plum - with sophisticated accents of smoke, cedar, and herb.  Almost California fruit levels with sweet spice, but plenty of Bordeaux class at the end.

Once again, just lovely and superb value, too!

"The Château Recougne 2014 is a blend of 90% Merlot, 2% Carmenere and 8% Cabernet Franc. It has a lovely, well-defined and vibrant nose, classic in style just like the old school label. The palate is medium-bodied with fresh red berry fruit, a keen line of acidity, plenty of vibrant cherries coming towards the graphite tinged finish. If you want a well crafted old fashioned Bordeaux wine, look no further! This is a great success for the estate under the guiding hand of Dr. Alain Raynaud."Wine Advocate 89-91 points

Someday, all the little Bordeaux from the great 2010 harvest will be gone, but until then, the values remain superb.  Here's another, based on 40% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Sauvignon, and the rest Cab Franc, Malbec, and Petit Verdot.  The Verdot really shows her in notes of candied violet and rich chocolate while the Cabernets add cedar, tobacco, currant, and dark cherry notes.  Finishes firm with spice, cedar and currant lingering.  Delicious right now and will improve for another 5 years or so.

Seigneurs d'Aiguilhe Cotes De Castillon 2014 Seigneurs d'Aiguilhe Cotes De Castillon 2014

This is the second wine of Chateau d'Aiguilhe, perhaps the best estate in the Cotes de Castillon.  Owner Stephan Neipperg is also responsible for better known wines from Canon-la-Gaffeliere, Clor l'Oratoire and La Mondotte.  This Merlot-based blend comes from 65 year-old vines and is rich, round, and dark-fruited with generous amounts of chocolate and spice.  Notes of Bordeaux cedar and herb weave in and out of the generous fruit and linger on the supple, smooth, finish.  A winner!

While this is technically a "Bordeaux blend" - meaning Cab, Merlot, etc. - you'll do better considering it a true "red blend."  Fruit from cool Alexander Valley give it freshness while grapes from hot Lodi, Dry Creek Valley and Paso Robles add plenty of heft.  Bold blackberry, cassis, oak spice and cedar aromas really pop on the rich, dense, palate and keep on pumping through a firm, powerful, finish. Bold red for a brisket, ribs, or burgers.

Ch du Retout Haut Medoc Cru Bourgeois 2014 Ch du Retout Haut Medoc Cru Bourgeois 2014

A vintage that's getting more and more acclaim and where this fine estate shines. It's a big, rich, wine you can enjoy now or cellar for 10 years.

"The 2014 Château du Retout has a potent blueberry and blackberry-scented bouquet with a strong floral element. The palate is medium-bodied with saturated tannin, good depth and well judged acidity to counterbalance the intensity here. It is a big, bold statement of a wine, one that the team manages to pull off because there is plenty of depth and freshness on the finish."Wine Advocate 89 points

"Very solid, with a delicious core of plum, cassis and raspberry fruit, lined with a stony thread that gives the finish spine and definition. Savory and iron hints show in the background. Has range and character."Wine Spectator 90-93 points

Ch La Cardonne Medoc 2009 Product #27116 (In Stock)
Ch La Cardonne Medoc 2009 Ch La Cardonne Medoc 2009

Nicely in the drinking window now with miles to go in cellar  yet.

"This is a major sleeper of the vintage and the best wine I have ever tasted from La Cardonne, which is in the northern end of the Medoc, near the town of Blaignan. A blend of 50% Merlot, 45% Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest Cabernet Franc, this 2009 offers up notes of tobacco leaf, cassis, and loamy soil with underbrush nuances. With excellent texture, impressive purity, and medium to full body, this is a rich, over-achieving cru bourgeois to drink over the next decade."Wine Advocate 88 points

A terrific value in 2010 Bordeaux from 35 year-old vines growing on classic Bordeaux gravel soils just outside Pauillac and St. Julien. Aged in tank (15%) and oak (85%) including about 50% new French oak.  The blend is 50% Cabernet Sauvignon (for structure and power), 45% Merlot (for body and fruit) and 5% Petit Verdot (color, perfume), all from sustainably farmed 35 year-old vines.

"A wine with sweet strawberries and raspberries on the nose. Full body, with ultra-fine tannins and a delicious finish. This is balanced and savory for the vintage. And it's an environmentally sustainable winery. Better after 2016."  James Suckling 92 points

"Sports bold, modern toast, with overt anise and blueberry notes leading the way, backed by racy plum and raspberry fruit. The solid finish shows the vintage's telltale graphite spine, offering lively acidity for balance. Best from 2014 through 2020."Wine Spectator 90 points

The Dude Napa Proprietary Red 2014 Product #31334 (In Stock)
The Dude Napa Proprietary Red 2014 The Dude Napa Proprietary Red 2014

This is an unknown wine with a fantastic pedigree.  Winemaker Neil Koch learned red wine making from Philippe Melka at Seavy, Vineyard 29 and Bryant family before making Cabernet and Chardonnay at Lewis Cellars.  Today, he’s a wine broker in Napa, which gives him plenty of insight into the best places in the Valley to get outstanding (if under-priced) grapes.  His 2014 The Dude blends Cabernet Sauvignon (38%), Merlot (28%), Cabernet Franc (27%) and Petite Verdot (7%) from vineyards in Calistoga, Rutherford, Carneros and Oak Knoll.  The northern sites give power and flesh; the cooler, southern, vineyards add brightness, freshness, and keep the alcohol at a very palatable 14.1%.

Opens beautifully with 30 minutes of air. Rich, dark aromas of black and red currant, blackberry, chocolate, cedar, herb and spice burst from the glass.  Take a sip and you’ll love how it pumps out dark fruit, bitter-sweet chocolate, crushed herb, and baking spice flavors that completely fill your mouth.  There’s plenty of luxury here, but also a fine freshness and vigor as the flavors drive on through the finish before expanding with a pop of late arriving flavors.  Just 1,200 cases made. Smooth, rich, flavorful, and delicious now – 2024.
