Whatever a happened to Cabernet Sauvignon from the Languedoc?  It was a "thing" a decade ago, and this rich and fleshy Cab suggests it could be a thing again right now!  From terraced vineyards about 7 miles from the Roman city of Nimes, it's 100% Cabernet aged in large oak cask.  Nicely fleshy in texture, it serves up aromas and flavors of ripe raspberry and currant and a touch of spicy oak.  A dried raspberry note adds interest on the spicy but smooth and easy finish.  Certainly a fine match for a good burger or steak, but this will serve as a party pour just as well!

While value in California Cab is getting ever harder to find, here's a winner in the "drink big Cab whenever you like" sweepstakes.  It's 100% Cab Sauv from Lodi, ripened to full flavor at a modest 13.5% alcohol.  Loads of dark blackberry, boysenberry and cherry fruit show on the nose and palate with subtle accents of dried herb and balsam.  A bold spice note comes up on the palate and sings out with the dark fruit over the smooth, easy, finish.  About as fine a cookout/party Cab as we've seen at this price in years.

R8 Wine Co Cabernet Sauvignon California 2014 R8 Wine Co Cabernet Sauvignon California 2014

R8 stands for Runway 8 at the Sonoma County airport, where this fine value winery is located (all the founders like to fly, too).  The 2014 R8 Cabernet is sourced from vineyards up and down California's North Coast and reflects the best of the great 2014 harvest:  plenty of ripe fruit and a plush and silky texture.  It serves up great aromas of black currant, black cherry, milk chocolate and spice.  It's fleshy and rich on the palate with more classic Cab currant fruit, a nice dose of chocolate and spice, and fine, food friendly, tannins.  A great party or casual dinner Cabernet that delivers a touch of extra class on the sneaky long finish.  Highly recommended!

Twenty Bench Cabernet Sauvignon North Coast 2016 Twenty Bench Cabernet Sauvignon North Coast 2016

It just keeps getting harder to find a terrific California Cabernet for under $25, but the folks at Twenty Bench seem to have figured this out.  From a vintage that joins 2012, 2013 and 2014 as outstanding Cab harvests in California's North Coast, this is about 90% Cabernet Sauvignon with accents of Merlot for breadth and Malbec for freshness and snap.  Give it a swirl and you'll be greeted by bold aromas of nutmeg, toasted oak, black currant and black plum.  Take a sip and you'll love how this fills your mouth with bold flavors of baked blackberry, currant, sweet spice and generous chocolaty richness.  The chocolate and black fruit hold center stage on the smooth, easygoing, finish.  Rich, delicious, great value.

Martin Ray Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve Napa 2014 Product #32543 (In Stock)
Martin Ray Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve Napa 2014 Martin Ray Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve Napa 2014

Think about what you’re hoping to get from $50 Napa Cabernet Sauvignon.  Bold aromas of blackcurrant, crushed blackberry, chocolate, and spice for sure.  Oodles of dark berry and currant fruit with bold accents of sweet spice, dark chocolate, and a bit of creamy mocha – that sounds good.  And a plush, velvety, texture that feel luxurious and rich and finishes smooth, lush and long with the tannins nicely cloaked in lingering black fruit and spice seals the deal.  You’ll find all that here in a wine that’s ready to drink right now with beef and lamb and will actually get better still over the next 5+ years.

It’s 100% Napa Cabernet Sauvignon, with most of the fruit coming from the red-hot Oak Knoll district in the southern part of Napa.  Cooling breezes from the bay helped moderate 2014’s warmth and lengthen hang time for the small, intense, berries.  A slow, two-week, fermentation with manual punch-downs followed by 15 months in 50% new French oak mellowed the powerful extraction and added lovely notes of spice and herb.  And somehow sliding in under the critics’ tasting agendas helps us keep the price of what really should be a $50 bottle to very user-friendly levels.  A delicious, extremely high-value, Napa Cab.

Daou Cabernet Sauvignon Paso Robles 2016 Daou Cabernet Sauvignon Paso Robles 2016

Proof that Paso Cab is on the rise, with deep, dark, fruit and a smooth, fleshy, finish.

"(60% new French oak): Bright violet color. Ripe dark berry and floral aromas pick up subtle tobacco and pungent floral and herb nuances as the wine stretches out. Juicy and focused on the palate, offering appealingly sweet blackberry and bitter cherry flavors that put on weight on the back half. Youthfully tannic on the sharply focused, persistent finish, which features lingering suggestions of candied rose and mocha."  Vinous (Raynolds) 91-92 points

"Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon reveals a nose of crème de cassis, plum preserves, cigar boxes, and garrique with dried herbs and sandalwood in the undercurrent. The medium to full-bodied palate delivers tons of ripe black fruits, licorice and dried herbs with a chewy frame and good balance."Wine Advocate 89 points

Union Sacre Cabernet Sauvignon Le Confident 2016 Product #32833 (In Stock)
Union Sacre Cabernet Sauvignon Le Confident 2016 Union Sacre Cabernet Sauvignon Le Confident 2016

The press is starting to catch up, but so far the prices remain excellent at this tiny winery in California's Central Coast. This is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon from a great 2016 harvest in Santa Barbara’s Happy Canyon AVA.  It delivers genuinely soaring aromas of classic Cabernet fresh black currant, crushed raspberry, sweet spice, and dusty dried herb.  It’s richly textured in the mouth and fully ripe, but remains phenomenally pure, silky and elegant.  Bold flavors of crushed black berries, cassis, spice, tobacco and cedar get an exotic lift of burnt orange peel, filling your mouth through the middle and continuing to pump out and linger over a long, silky  smooth, finish.

"A Cabernet Sauvignon from the Happy Canyon of Santa Barbara, the 2016 Le Confident from Union Sacré offers up sweet aromas of blackberries, herbs and licorice, followed by a medium-bodied, ample and layered palate, with a sweet core of fruit, good balance and a flavorful finish. My only reservation would be that it's a touch jammy, which comes at the expense of some Cabernet varietal character, but it's a tasty and keenly priced wine."Wine Advocate 91 points

A terrific follow-up to the Advocate 93 point 2014, this is 100% Clone 6 Cabernet Sauvignon grown at 1,400 feet elevation in Sonoma.  The site gives  very tiny berries and yields just 2 tons per acre in a good year (about half normal).  As in 2014, it's loaded with baking spice, cassis, black raspberry, crushed herb and dark stone aromas and flavors.  Excellent richness and mid-palate volume here gets support from grainy, lightly chewy, tannins on the long, spicy, finish.  A great grilling Cab now and for 5-7 years or so.

Union Sacre La Passion Du Diable Cabernet Sauvignon 2015 Product #32988 (In Stock)
Union Sacre La Passion Du Diable Cabernet Sauvignon 2015 Union Sacre La Passion Du Diable Cabernet Sauvignon 2015

If you love serious, concentrated, deeply textured and powerfully structured Napa Cabernet Sauvignon - then wander on down to the Canyon and get Happy!  Winemaker Xavier Xavier Arnaudin crafts seven barrels (165 cases) of this powerful, 100% Cabernet Sauvignon from the Star Lane vineyard in Santa Barbara's Happy Canyon.  Grown at nearly 2,000 feet elevation, the vines benefit from plenty of sunshine and warm mornings for ripeness and then rapidly cooling breezes from the Pacific Ocean every afternoon.  Aging in 100% new French oak gives the wine shape and spice, but the fruit just will not be covered in wood.

Classic Napa-like aromas of black currant, blackberry, sweet spice, crushed herb and dark chocolate pump out of the glass from first pour and get deeper and richer with air.  On the palate, the wine is focused, concentrated, and muscular with intense black fruit (currant, plum, berry) dusted with cocoa powder and complicated by a layer of spice.  It's a big wine, but stays amazingly fresh through the long, firmly tannic, ripe fruit and dark chocolate finish.  Amazingly, this has no acid added in the winery - this unique site and careful winemaking delivers fantastic freshness to go with full-bodied power.  Delicious now, better from 2020 and great through 2030 or so.

Ch Montelena Cabernet Napa 2015 Product #33328 (In Stock)

One of the best releases of this Napa classic ever with richness, depth and perfect balance.

"Montelena's 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon is gorgeous. Pliant and supple, the 2015 offers notable density and raciness in an up-front style that will drink well upon release. Succulent red/purplish fruit, spice, new leather and licorice are front and center. A wine of total allure, the 2015 hits all the right spots. Best of all, at $62 a bottle it is one of the best values readers will find in Napa Valley Cabernet. Don't miss it."  Vinous 92 points

"The 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley release from Montelena has a beautiful bouquet that just jumps from the glass. Lovely notes of crème de cassis, violets, tobacco, and orange blossom all give way to a ripe, medium to full-bodied, sweetly fruited Cabernet Sauvignon that shows the charm of the 2015 front and center. It will keep for 10-15 years."  Jeb Dunnuck 92 points

Zeitgeist Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley 2013 Product #30758 (In Stock)
Zeitgeist Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley 2013 Zeitgeist Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley 2013

Want to see what happens to Zeitgeist Cab with a couple of years on bottle?  Winemakers Mark Porembski and Jennifer Williams have offered us 6 cases of their dwindling supply of 2013 Cab (with only 421 cases made, there wasn’t much to start with!).  It’s more firm and grippy than the fleshier 2015 edition and has plenty of life in front of it.  But the fruit and oak are pulling together beautifully now and it’s well worth checking in on to enjoy the ridel

"Good dark ruby. Captivating floral lift to the aromas of cassis, black cherry, licorice and graphite minerality, with complementary sweet oak nuances. Sweet, dense, supple and deep, with dark berry and spice flavors nicely framed by harmonious acidity and accented by piquant pepper and herb notes. Finishes juicy and long, with firm-edge tannins and lovely floral lift. Very well done."  Vinous (Tanzer) 92 points

"There are 421 cases of the 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa from the same four sites used for the 2012. This wine is coiled tightly and displays higher tannin as well as higher extract and richness. It has an inky purple color and beautiful, dense blackberry and cassis flavors along with hints of licorice, forest floor and earth. Some background oak also makes an appearance."Wine Advocate 93+ points

Zeitgeist Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley 2015 Product #33339 (In Stock)
Zeitgeist Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley 2015 Zeitgeist Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley 2015

The husband-and-wife team of Mark Porembski and Jennifer Williams crafted their 400 case 2015 Cabernet from three outstanding Napa Valley vineyards.  Sleeping Lady in Yountville – the source of their 99 point flagship wine – gives deep fruit and classic structure.  St. Helena's Lewelling Ranch, continuously farmed since 1864, add richness and flesh and a connection to Napa history. And Farella Vineyard in Coombesville gives a welcome since of freshness and drive.

The result is the most complete Zeitgeist Napa Cabernet we’ve tasted to date.  There’s the plush plumpness of 2012, the fine and cellar-worthy power of 2013, and the silky purity of 2014, all rolled up into one.  A brief decant is all it needs to delight right now, although feel free to lay this down for 15+ years if that’s your thing.

“There’s 400 cases of the 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon and it’s a blend of 95% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Petit Verdot, from the Farella, Lewelling, and Sleeping Lady Vineyard, that was brought up in 70% new French oak. It’s another concentrated, ripe, sexy 2015 that has classic notes of cassis, blackberry jam, crushed rocks and leather. With terrific balance and building tannin, it’s a classic Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon that will benefit from 3-4 years of bottle age and keep for 15-20 years.”  Jeb Dunnuck 94+ points
