Vina Siegel Crucero Chardonnay 2017 Product #33034 (In Stock)
Vina Siegel Crucero Chardonnay 2017 Vina Siegel Crucero Chardonnay 2017

What a find!  Vina Siegel has delivered solid value from Chile's Colchagua Valley for years, but this 2016 Chardonnay under the super-value Crucero - "Crossroads" - label is the best we've tried yet. This is a rich, fruit-filled, Chardonnay with plenty of ripe orchard fruits, pineapple and mango aromas and flavors.  A short stay in oak adds vanilla, coconut and spice accents that add complexity to the richly textured mid-palate and length to the fruity vanilla finish. An exceptional value in rich, nicely oaked, and very smooth Chardonnay with plenty of fruit and a fresh, dry, finish.

Campet Ste Marie Chardonnay Pays d'Oc France 2015 Product #33185 (In Stock)
Campet Ste Marie Chardonnay Pays d'Oc France 2015 Campet Ste Marie Chardonnay Pays d'Oc France 2015

We think of France's Languedoc as a hot region built to turn out hearty reds.  But Limoux, just south of Carcassonne, is higher and cooler than most of the rest of Languedoc with chalky limestone soils and cooling Mediterranean breezes - perfect for fine Chardonnay!  And this one is very fine indeed, made from just ripe-enough fruit (13.5 alcohol) that is fermented cool and aged 9 months in used French oak.

Pretty aromas of stone fruit, citrus and oak spice lead to a round, fleshy, mouthful of Honeycrisp apple and baked pear flavors accented by notes of lemon curd and toasted nut.  The fruit turns more white (peach, apricot, apple) on the finish with a touch of fresh butter and refreshing, vibrant, acids.  A fine Bourgogne Blanc and Macon alternative to enjoy with salads, seafood and poultry or just to sip on its own.  Outstanding value, too!

Talley Vineyards Chardonnay Estate 2015 375ml Talley Vineyards Chardonnay Estate 2015 375ml

A ripe but restrained style of Chardonnay from one of California's coolest growing areas. A fun dinner or pre-dinner treat!

"Aged in French oak barrels, 25% of them new, for 16 months. Limpid yellow. Potent, mineral-accented tropical and orchard fruit aromas show very good clarity and a sexy floral overtone. Taut, minerally and delineated on the palate, which displays juicy pear, tangerine and pineapple flavors that become deeper with air. Concentrated yet lively as well, closing taut and very long, leaving dusty mineral and citrus pith notes behind."  Vinous (Galloni) 93 points

"Opening with exuberant white peach, lemon curd and grapefruit notes with suggestions of marzipan and crushed stones, the medium-bodied 2015 Chardonnay Estate delivers refreshing citrus and minerally flavors with a racy acid line and good length."Wine Advocate 90 points

Varner Chardonnay Foxglove 2014 Varner Chardonnay Foxglove 2014

As always, an amazing amount of pure, no-oak, Chardonnnay for the money.

"The highlight in this range from Foxglove, the 2014 Chardonnay packs a serious punch for the money. Bright, juicy and exuberant, the Foxglove Chardonnay will thrill readers looking for a budget-priced Chardonnay. Lemon peel, white flowers and mint meld together in a rich, beautifully layered Chardonnay long on class. Aging in steel and blocked malolactic fermentation keep the flavors bright, but there is no shortage of depth or intensity. This is a fabulous wine, especially considering its modest price." Vinous (Galloni) 90 points

"Made by some of the best Chardonnay winemakers in California, Jim and Bob Varner, the value-priced 2014 Chardonnay released under the Foxglove label sports a light gold color to go with exotic notes of pineapples, melon, citrus blossom, spice and hints of green herbs. Supple, forward and straight-up delicious on the palate, with no hard edges and a clean, classy profile, it's a steal at the price and will drink nicely for a year or three."Wine Advocate 90 points

Egret Chardonnay Sonoma County 2015 Product #32782 (In Stock)
Egret Chardonnay Sonoma County 2015 Egret Chardonnay Sonoma County 2015

A California Chardonnay showing upper-$20s quality and character at a price nicely below that!  Egret comes from Carneros-based Bonneau Vineyards, and most of the fruit is from their home vineyard there.  About 25% of the wine ages in barrel (used) and the rest in tank, allowing 2015's generous, ripe, pear peach, and citrus fruit to shine through.

The texture - feeling rich, creamy and a bit spicy - is exceptional at this price point, as is the satisfyingly ripe and juicy pear fruit.  An attractive squirt of fresh orange lifts the long, spicy, finish.  Really delicious for sipping and parties and a great companion for roasted poultry and rich shellfish.

Dom Lemonier Macon Villages 2016 Product #32869 (In Stock)
Dom Lemonier Macon Villages 2016 Dom Lemonier Macon Villages 2016

This is a "second label" from a well-respected Macon producer - same wines, but different label for a smaller importer.  When Wine Advocate tasted through their Pouilly-Fuisse and single-vineyard Macons from 2016, they concluded, "These are great wines from winemaker Pierre-Emmanuel Sangouard and they come recommended, notwithstanding their wallet-friendly price tags." That certainly applies to this stunning, entry-level, Macon Villages.

It's 100% Chardonnay made all in tank from the outstanding (if painfully small) 2016 vintage.  A bit shy on the nose right now, but bold and intense on the palate.  Lip-smacking acids support a fine load of ripe and fleshy citrus and orchard fruit flavors.  The definition here is superb, with flavors of fruit, fresh butter, toasted hazelnut, and chalky mineral each distinct and yet perfectly integrated.  We love the energy, length and drive here - and love the value price even more!

Bishops Peak Chardonnay Central Coast 2016 Product #32461 (In Stock)
Bishops Peak Chardonnay Central Coast 2016 Bishops Peak Chardonnay Central Coast 2016

The folks at Talley have really upped their game with the 2016 Bishop's Peak Chardonnay.  All of the fruit comes from the famous  Oliver's Vineyard (the Talley version of this sells for $50), blending a bit of barrel fermented juice from the big wine into the stainless steel base.  Lovely aromas of lemon, white peach and jasmine lead to flavors of creamy orange, juicy pear and lime zest.  Crisp and refreshing with a touch of chalk at the end.  An outstanding value.

"(raised in a combination of stainless steel tanks and neutral French oak barrels) Limpid yellow. Fresh pear, melon, orange zest and a hint of chamomile on the nose; a subtle hint of leesiness emerges slowly. Juicy and round on the palate, offering ripe citrus and orchard fruit flavors accented by a smoky nuance. Silky and focused on the finish, which shows good lift, spicy cut, and very good, floral-driven persistence." Vinous (Raynolds) 90 points

Macrostie Chardonnay Sonoma Coast 2015 Product #32394 (In Stock)
Macrostie Chardonnay Sonoma Coast 2015 Macrostie Chardonnay Sonoma Coast 2015

Steve MacRostie creates this classy Chardonnay from grapes grown in some of the most exciting regions of California's Sonoma Coast.  Sangiacomo and Hi Vista vineyards in Carneros give richness and texture.  Several Russian River Valley sites - including sites owned by the Dutton and Martinelli familes - give lift, purity and vibrancy.  And MacRostie's own Wildcat Mountain Vyd just west of Carneros adds fantastic complexity and length.

All of the fruit is pressed whole cluster (without destemming) to maintain clarity and freshness.  About 90% ferments and ages in (20% new) French oak for more richness and body while 20% stays in stainless steel to retain crispness and cut.  Rich and lush, with plenty of sweet pineapple and tropical fruit, a lash of butter, and bright green apple acids to hold everything in balance.

Le Chai Duchet Vire Clesse 2015 Product #32888 (In Stock)
Le Chai Duchet Vire Clesse 2015 Le Chai Duchet Vire Clesse 2015

In just the 3rd vintage made and bottled by young Alexis Duchet, this wine already shows the very high quality of the family’s organically farmed vineyards and the character of the chalky limestone soils of the Macon’s Vire-Clesse AOC.  Alexis pulls fruit for his AOC Vire-Clesse from four sites near the village of Vire, all planted to Chardonnay vines now 60 years old or older.  Winemaking is dead simple:  gentle pressing, native yeasts, fermentation in stainless steel and then up to 12 months aging in concrete tanks.

There’s nothing simple about the wine, though.  In the warm, ripe, 2015 harvest, this shows a bit more breadth and generosity than the typical Vire-Clesse, with lovely scents and flavors of stone fruit – peach, apricot, nectarine – over chalky stone and topped with a captivating hint of fruit blossoms.  The texture is rich and round on the palate but lacks nothing in energy, minerality, and drive.  Delicious to drink on its own, for sure, but try it with shellfish, roast chicken or anything with a handful of mushrooms for a real treat!

A really charming and delicious Chardonnay from just outside Charlottesville, this is all estate grown fruit aged in tank and a mix of French, American, and Hungarian oak. Punches all the Chardonnay buttons - crisp apple, ripe pear, toasted hazelnut, and just a kiss of oak - but isn't buttery or heavy at just 12.5% abv.  Finishes with fine energy and a touch of sweet spice.

Jean Paul Thibert Macon Fuisse 2016 Product #32341 (In Stock)

This is getting silly.  This wine has been the white Burgundy steal of the store for 5 years now, but the 2016 jumps up into a whole new quality tier.  Jean Paul Thibert ferments and ages his ripe Macon-Fuisse Chardonnay fruit in large, old barrels called foudre.  These big barrels (each holding about 10x the typical barrique) provide his wine with just enough air contact to smooth off rough edges without adding any wood flavor or tannin.

Aromas and flavors feature rich, ripe, pear, apple, and peach fruit with accents of toasted hazelnut and grilled pineapple.  Full and fleshy enough to give almost any Pouilly-Fuisse a run for its money, but crisp and minerally on the mouthwatering finish.  You've got to try this stuff.

Marcel Couturier Macon Loche Les Longues Terres 2015 Product #32715 (In Stock)
Marcel Couturier Macon Loche Les Longues Terres 2015 Marcel Couturier Macon Loche Les Longues Terres 2015

100% Chardonnay from 35 year-old vines fermented in tank and aged 11 months in used French oak. Marcel farms 11 hectares of vineyards total in a number of different appellations: Pouilly-Fuissé, Pouilly-Loché, Saint-Véran, Macon-Loché, Macon-Vinzelles, and Macon Blanc. Most of these vines are quite old: plenty of parcels are 70+ years old, most of his “young” vines are 30 years old.

In the winery, the approach is pretty hands-off. Almost everything is fermented and aged in barrel, with an average of 20% new wood, depending on the year. Fermentation happens slowly, with alcoholic fermentation often not finishing until January and malolactic fermentation sometimes going on through the summer. The wines are bottled right before harvest of the following year.

The 2015 Macon Loche "Les Longues Terres" has complex aromas of warm stone, honey, apple, peach and hazelnut.  Then there's nice richness of texture to a palate of dried white peach, laurel, tea, lemon confit and toasted nut.  The finish is dry, full-bodied, and full of minerality with the stone fruit flavors lingering nicely.  A winner!
