En Numeros Vermells Garnaxta Blanca 2016 En Numeros Vermells Garnaxta Blanca 2016

1,171 bottles made; 804 imported.  The 2015 edition of Silvia Puig’s white Grenache was easily the best wine from this tricky grape I’d ever tasted.  The 2016 edition is better.  A warm, very dry, season pushed yields and berry sizes down with corresponding gains in both richness and structure and the combination of fermenting in open top oak barrels and aging in stainless steel accentuates both.

The best word to describe the 2016 edition is one I’d never thought to use for Garnaxta Blanca:  precision.  Fragrances and flavors of white peach, fresh pear, tart pineapple, sliced almond and just a hint of honey jump from the glass and coat your mouth.  Both the palate and finish are wondrously long, with a dusty slate minerality appearing in the middle and gaining strength and breadth on the mouthwatering, pineapple and tangerine, finish.  I’m really not sure how this could possibly be better – although that’s what I thought about the 2015, too.

En Numeros Vermells Garnaxta Blanca 2014 En Numeros Vermells Garnaxta Blanca 2014

1,115 bottles made, 576 imported.  Before I tasted this, I would have said Silvia Puig makes some of the very best Garnatxa Blanca - white Grenache - in the world.  After tasting her 2014, all I can say is that this is the best example I've ever tasted and I'm absolutely at a loss to imagine a better one.  In part, the fresh, pure, 2014 vintage is at work here, but also Silvia's decision to ferment the wine in both 500 liter French oak and clay amphora before aging in steel.  Here, more or less verbatim, is what I wrote when Jonas first poured it for me:

"I love this.  More drive and precision and minerality than 2013 without any loss of fruit or generosity. Clarity.  So fresh and clean and utterly seductive.  Long and pure with pineapple, peach and honey and brilliant intensity.  So much flavor and freshness.  Minerality.  This is so very, very, delicious."

"Slightly hazy gold. Ripe pear and nectarine scents are enlivened by orange zest, ginger and chalky minerals. Fleshy and broad on entry, then tighter in the mid-palate, offering juicy citrus and orchard fruit flavors and a bracing jolt of white pepper. Finishes fleshy and dry, with a firm closing grip, excellent persistence and a lingering, suave floral note."  Vinous (Raynolds) 92 points
