Ameztoi Getariako Txakolina White 2015 Product #31021 (In Stock)

With 8 straight 91 point ratings from Vinous, it seems likely the new release is a winner, too!  Vibrant aromas of lime zest, Granny Smith, white flower and chalk lead to zesty flavors of citrus, apricot, passion fruit, and salty mineral that get more powerful with air (and as the light prickle of CO2 blows off).  A tarragon note emerges on the bone dry, energetic finish.  Great choice for shellfish and summer.

Anton Bauer Blaufrankisch Reserve Wagram 2012 Product #31803 (In Stock)
Anton Bauer Blaufrankisch Reserve Wagram 2012 Anton Bauer Blaufrankisch Reserve Wagram 2012

Perhaps Austria's very best red grape, Blaufrankisch remains relatively unknown here in the USA.  This deep, rich, and spicy example from Anton Bauer could help fix that a bit.  It's a barrel selection made by importer Klaus Wittauer and Anton that Klaus liked so much he put one of his artist wife's paintings on the label.  20 months in oak plus extra time in bottle has done this nothing but good! Very plush and deep with a very long finish, the interplay of fruit, chocolate and exotic spice is utterly captivating.  A great example and highly rated by Austira's preeminent wine guide:

"Spicy black berry flavor, nuances of dark cherries, a touch of dried fruit and cardamom. Complex, dark berry fruit, prominent, well integrated tannins, ripe cherries, chocolate finish, good development potential, a fine food companion."  Falstaff 92 points

Barbeito Madeira Baltimore Rainwater Nv Product #29046 (In Stock)
Barbeito Madeira Baltimore Rainwater Nv Barbeito Madeira Baltimore Rainwater Nv

"The non-vintage RWC Baltimore Rainwater (bottled January 2012) was designed to reintroduce Rainwater as a prestige style rather than the cheaper, paler versions of years gone by. Its template was a Rainwater that Mannie Berk tasted from the 1820s. It has a light lanolin, melted candle wax, dried fig and orange blossom-scented bouquet that expands nicely with aeration. The palate is crisp and light on the entry, with a vibrant citric thread that combines succinctly with bitter orange and mandarin notes. It is laced with a touch of toffee towards the elegant finish. This is delicate, understated and delicious."Wine Advocate 89 points

Baron De Lajoyosa Gran Reserva Carinena 2005 Product #32233 (In Stock)
Baron De Lajoyosa Gran Reserva Carinena 2005 Baron De Lajoyosa Gran Reserva Carinena 2005

Old-school Spanish red wine here priced at a pretty crazy old-fashioned level given the $25 release price.  The Marin family founded the winery in 1903 and farm old vines at 600 meters in Cariñena, about 2 hours southeast of Rioja.  It’s traditional here to grow mixtures of grapes in each vineyard, and this is a very traditional 50% Garnacha, 30% Tempranillo and 10% Cariñena plus a bit of modern Cabernet Sauvignon.  Long aging in barrel followed by plenty of bottle time have brought this 12 year-old red to the peak of mellow maturity.

Generous aromas of spice, earth, leather, dark cherry and roasted berry get a touch of complexity from hints of sweet tobacco.  On the palate it’s medium-bodied but richly flavored with dark raspberry, baked strawberry, leather and baker’s chocolate flavors.  The finish is long and smooth and complex with sweet cherry and strawberry fruit framed by notions of tobacco, chocolate and spice.  Fully ready now (and best over the next couple of years), this will shine with grilled lamb or mellow beef dishes.

Bedouet Clos Des Grands Primos Muscadet Sevre Et Maine 2015 Product #30753 (In Stock)
Bedouet Clos Des Grands Primos Muscadet Sevre Et Maine 2015 Bedouet Clos Des Grands Primos Muscadet Sevre Et Maine 2015

Having converted his Clos des Grand Primos vineyard to certified organic farming, Michel Bedouet is delivering on Muscadet’s potential.  The vineyard is a rocky mess of granite, schist and gneiss - no fun to farm, but wonderful for Muscadet's Melon de Bourgogne grape.  The 2015 delivers all the saline minerality and chiseled cut you'd expect from fine Muscade, but also a generous roundness to the texture and a plenty of ripe apple and tangy lemon-lime fruit. You’ll taste the benefits of extended aging on the lees – spent yeast cells left after fermentation – in the wine’s wet stone and chalk minerality, but love how the fresh fruit holds center stage and pumps on through a long finish of lemon, apple, lime zest and fresh thyme.  Sure, it’s a great wine for shellfish, but you’ll love it with almost any summertime dish or simply all on its own.

Begali Amarone Della Valpolicella Classico 2012 Product #30731 (In Stock)
Begali Amarone Della Valpolicella Classico 2012 Begali Amarone Della Valpolicella Classico 2012

As Wine Advocate said in late 2013, “If you can name but two producers in Valpolicella (I’m betting they are Dal Forno and Quintarelli), it’s now time to add a third: Lorenzo Begali.”  Begali’s Amarone isn’t quite as hefty as Dal Forno and is much cleaner and less rustic than Quintarelli, but we agree that the quality-levels are very similar – even if the prices are about 80% less!

Soaring aromas of dried black cherry, blueberry, and blackberry are framed by subtle notes of oak, tobacco and chocolate.  On the palate the wine is amazingly pure, clean, and fresh – even at 15.5% abv! – with layers and layers of rich fresh fruit, dried berry and raisin, crushed flower, dark chocolate, cured tobacco, and sweet spice.  Plenty of Amarone richness and power, for sure, but with impeccable balance and silkiness of texture and perfectly integrated alcohol.  The juicy, fruit and spice-filled finish sails on over ripe tannins with berry and raisin flavors lingering on and on.  Put some away to enjoy with warming winter meals but don’t hesitate to pop a bottle now to pair with ribs, brisket, or any other rich food off the grill.

Bliss Family Blissful Red Blend 2014 Product #32003 (In Stock)
Bliss Family Blissful Red Blend 2014 Bliss Family Blissful Red Blend 2014

While “Blissful Red” is play on this winegrowing family’s name, it’s also a pretty good description of how you’ll feel about this old fashioned “mixed blacks” blend at a very “old school” California price!  Irv Bliss fell in love with California’s Central Coast during a visit in the 1930s and then – a few years later – purchased this 450 acre Medocino estate at auction sight unseen.  Today his grandchildren continue to farm grapes here, selling some of their crop and – just like Irv – making a bit of wine for family, friends – and you!

Back in 1930s California, the notion of planting a vineyard to a single grape varietal was just getting started, so Irv followed in local tradition and planted his field to a mixture of grapes that had historically done well in the region.  This wine is an homage to Irv, blending Primitivo, Zinfandel, Sangiovese, Merlot, Barbera, Cab and Syrah to create a delicious “kitchen sink” red blend.  It's nice and dark and full of ripe, spicy, fruit - think briary raspberry, blackberry and cherry - with a hint of herb and Italian structure.  A great gush of cherry fruit, earth, smoke and spice pops on the juicy finish.  At just 13.5% alcohol (and a great sale price), it’s definitely the kind of wine you can enjoy all day long with pasta, pizza, burgers, sausages, and lots and lots of friends!

Big and rich with plenty of power and a nice floral note, too.

"This 100% Bobal (60 to 80-year-old vines), aged four months in concrete, represents a terrific buy. It possesses excellent delineation as well as lots of blueberry and sweet and sour cherry fruit intermixed with notions of chalk and strawberries. Medium-bodied and fruity with attractive texture as well as purity, it should drink well for several years."Wine Advocate 88 points

Bodegas Ego Jumilla Fuerza 2013 Product #32155 (In Stock)
Bodegas Ego Jumilla Fuerza 2013 Bodegas Ego Jumilla Fuerza 2013

For years, Spain's baking hot, dry, high plains south of Madrid were known for Mourvedre reds that were - at best - full of roasted fruit with chewy finishes that would charitably be called "rustic."  It took an Australian - super-consultant Chris Ringland - working with the Gil family of Juan Gil to find a way to bring "modern" flash and polish to Jumilla.  At their Bodegas El Nido, Ringland and the Gil Family perfected the art of cutting hearty Monastrell with ripe Cabernet Sauvignon to create what quickly became the region's most highly rated bottlings.  Ringland went on to repeat the feat at Bodegas Volver (Triga in Alicante) and Bodegas Castano (Solanera in Yecla).

With Fuerza, Bodeags Ego takes the Ringland approach to selected lots of fruit from then 25 hectares of old-vine Monastrell.  Blending 75% Monastrell and 25% Cabernet Sauvignon and aging the young wine in 100% new American oak for 12 months creates a deep, dark, powerful with that’s loaded with blackberry, plum and blackcurrant fruit, layered with sweet wood spice and smoke, and finishes ultra-rich and smooth.  If that’s your kind of wine, then you will look long and hard to find a better example at prices like these!

"Cola, sassafras and clove notes frame a deep core of plum and currant fruit in this dense red. The texture is plush and polished, supported by well-integrated tannins and balsamic acidity. Monastrell and Cabernet Sauvignon. Drink now through 2020."Wine Spectator 90 points

Bodegas Tradicion Palo Cortado Sherry VORS 30 Years Product #32123 (In Stock)
Bodegas Tradicion Palo Cortado Sherry VORS 30 Years Bodegas Tradicion Palo Cortado Sherry VORS 30 Years

One of the greatest "wood" Sherry's we've ever tasted, this is what happens when the flor on Amontillado dies early and lets the wine darken to Oloroso levels - and then gets aged for 30 years in American oak cask.  A lovely touch of Amontillado white fruit with the caramel and toasted nut richness of Oloroso sherries elevated by a lift of Fino-like acidity and salty mineral. Simply stunning and quite rare.

"Riveting, with dried orange peel, powdered clove, Brazil nut, juniper and green tea notes attached to a live wire of acidity. The long, focused finish leaves a mouthwatering echo."Wine Enthusiast 93 points

Bodegas Virgen De La Sierra Macabeo Albada 2015 Product #30902 (In Stock)
Bodegas Virgen De La Sierra Macabeo Albada 2015 Bodegas Virgen De La Sierra Macabeo Albada 2015

Better known under it's Rioja name of Viura, Macabeo flies under the radar as a main or blending grape in white Rioja, Cava, and other regional wines.  British Master of Wine Jancis Robinson has dubbed it "the Cinderella grape" in recognition of the way Macabeo is coming out of the shadows now and being allowed to shine on it's own.

This is a fine example from 35 year-old vines in Calatayud, not far from Rioja. You'll find Macabeo's signature notes of peach, orange, and almond here lifted by a note of juicy lemon.  Rich and creamy on the palate with good weight and a nice, refreshing, dusty minerality on the generous finish.  This will be especially delicious with fresh water fish done with butter and nuts or even with richer dishes like salmon.

Pay attention to the "South Africa" origin or not as you please.  This wine speaks a global language:  YUM.  Rich, ripe, Syrah gives this deep fruit while powerful Mourvedre adds earthy complexity and grip.  The touch of Viognier fermented with the Syrah lifts the aromas and keeps things fresh. Bohigas Cava Brut Reserve NV Bohigas Cava Brut Reserve NV

There's an element of class and style here you just don't often find in value-priced bubbles.  Authentic, delicious, and very well-priced.

"A family-owned winery whose origins date back to the 13th century, Fermi Bohigas owns over 240 acres of organically farmed vineyards in Catalunya. Made from a classic blend (for this area) of Xarel-lo, Macabeo and Parellada planted in limestone and clay soils, the wine spends 24 months on its lees before disgorgement. It is an excellent value for consumers looking for alternatives to French Champagne. Lemon/lime, crushed rock and white currant notes are present in this crisp, elegant, refreshing, zesty, dry sparkler. Hints of wheat thins and brioche add complexity. Bollinger Special Cuvee Brut NV Bollinger Special Cuvee Brut NV

As always, a mature style showing brioche, hazelnut, toffee, and butter scents and delivering a powerful, rich, palate with an firm finish.

"One of Bollinger’s great assets is a massive stock of reserve wine, including 600,000 magnums held under cork. Gilles Descôtes tends those reserves, working with the blending team to subsume the variations of the current vintage into Bollinger’s Special Cuvée by using a majority of reserve wines in the blend. The result is a rich and harmonious Champagne with deep reserves of flavor. Its substantial, formal structure feels polished, its flavors balancing the cool earthiness of a limestone cave and the sunnier, bright floral notes of fresh cream. Built for food, whether emphasizing the freshness with lobster bisque, or the depth with beef Wellington and chanterelles."Wine & Spirits 93 points

Broadbent Boal Madeira 1978 Product #26993 (In Stock)
Broadbent Boal Madeira 1978 Broadbent Boal Madeira 1978

Very rare and limited.

"The 1978 Boal was aged in oak casks until bottling in February 2011. Compared directly against the Terrantez, the Boal does not quite have the same degree of complexity and harmony. It politely requests time to “tuck in its shirt” and “straighten its tie”. After several hours it offers scents of smoked walnut, a touch of peat, marmalade and furniture polish. The palate is very harmonious and seems to have more composure and refinement than the aromatics: cracked black pepper on the entry that reluctantly gives way to honey, bitter orange, marjoram and Clementine. It is not a heavyweight Boal, erring more towards Terrantez in terms of perceived sweetness, although it is graceful and elegant from start to finish."Wine Advocate 92 points

Broadbent Terrantez Madeira 1978 Product #26994 (In Stock)
Broadbent Terrantez Madeira 1978 Broadbent Terrantez Madeira 1978

Very limited and rare.

"The dazzling 1978 Terrantez is aged in oak for its entire life and bottled by Justino in February 2011. Deep mahogany with a degraded tawny rim, it offers a glorious bouquet of smoked walnut, English ale, peat moorland and dried honey that is very well-defined and seems to expand with continual aeration over three to four hours. The palate is generous on the entry with sweet, tangy Seville orange marmalade, quince, cumin and Indian spices embroidered into a viscous texture that errs towards Bual in style. It is a powerful Terrantez with hubris, yet knows not to go too far. This is a sublime expression of the grape variety."Wine Advocate 95 points
