- Steindorfer Apetlon Rouge Burgenland 2013 Product #30424 (In Stock)
A happy ending to a scary accident. When Ernst Steindorfer fell and hit his head during the 2010 vintage, he temporarily lost his sense of smell. Unable to evaluate his individual cuvees of Austria’s top native grapes - Blaufrankisch, St. Laurent, and Zweigelt – to choose Reserve lots, he elected to just blend an equal number of barrels from his best vineyard plots to create kind of a “baby-Reserve.” It turned out so well, now he’s done it for a third time – and, with sense of smell intact, it’s even better!
About as fine a cookout red as you’ll find this year, the 2013 Apetlon serves up savory aromas of smoke, sour cherry, sweet blackberry, licorice and lavender. The flavors are bright and juicy – roasted strawberry and blackberry puree – with complex shadings of exotic spice, dark chocolate, and earth. The sweet, tangy, fruit pumps out through a finish supported by fine tannins and leaving notes of chocolate, spice, and fruit lingering behind. It’s juicy and fruit-filled enough to handle sausages or burgers and has enough rich earth, chocolate and crisp tannins to excel with lamb.
“A distinct whiff of tiny, black elderberries promises joy. This is joined by white pepper and iron oxide to play on luscious but soft red and black fruit. The spice is exciting and pervasive and highlighted by freshness. The fine balance this strikes is expressed as straight-laced elegance. What unpretentious, honest joy.”Wine Enthusiast 91 points
- Anton Bauer Blaufrankisch Reserve Wagram 2012 Product #31803 (In Stock)
Perhaps Austria's very best red grape, Blaufrankisch remains relatively unknown here in the USA. This deep, rich, and spicy example from Anton Bauer could help fix that a bit. It's a barrel selection made by importer Klaus Wittauer and Anton that Klaus liked so much he put one of his artist wife's paintings on the label. 20 months in oak plus extra time in bottle has done this nothing but good! Very plush and deep with a very long finish, the interplay of fruit, chocolate and exotic spice is utterly captivating. A great example and highly rated by Austira's preeminent wine guide:
"Spicy black berry flavor, nuances of dark cherries, a touch of dried fruit and cardamom. Complex, dark berry fruit, prominent, well integrated tannins, ripe cherries, chocolate finish, good development potential, a fine food companion." Falstaff 92 points
