Kellerei Kaltern Caldaro Schiava 2015 Product #30795 (In Stock)
Kellerei Kaltern Caldaro Schiava 2015 Kellerei Kaltern Caldaro Schiava 2015

Schiava (also called Vernatsch or Trollinger) was actually the region’s most planted grape for many years – with 60% of total vineyard area – until Pinot Grigio and Chardonnay began to supplant it.  That’s too bad, because the light, crisp, and juicy red wines this local grape makes are fun to drink and pair well with a wide range of foods.

Reflecting the cultural and linguistic diversity of Alto Adige, the Schiava grape is called “Kalterersee” in the local dialect of the region around Lake Caldaro.  Grapes for this beauty grew on loamy, limestone gravel soils at 230-450 meters above the Lake and were fermented and aged entirely in tank. A delicious farmhouse red, loaded with red berry fruit, a hint of smoke, and a bright gentle finish.  Kind of like a ripe Chinon (but without the herbal notes), this is delicious with a light chill and shines with everyday foods and cured meats.  A tad more rich and round in the warm 2015 harvest, but still a refreshingly great value!

Bruni Poggio d' Elsa Cabernet Sangiovese 2015 Product #31873 (In Stock)
Bruni Poggio d' Elsa Cabernet Sangiovese 2015 Bruni Poggio d' Elsa Cabernet Sangiovese 2015

Winemaker Marco Bruni and his siblings named this “Super Tuscan” red for their mom, Elsa – could it be anything other than fantastic?  The wine is from Tuscany’s Maremma region, a slice of western Tuscany that gets all of the brilliant “Tuscan sun” that makes Chianti so famous plus cooling breezes from the nearby sea.  It’s sometimes called the “California of Italy” because while Sangiovese (the main grape of Chianti and Brunello) is great here, so is Napa Valley’s Cabernet Sauvignon.  Here, the Bruni’s blend equal parts Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon and age about 30% of the wine in French oak casks.

In the monumentally great 2015 harvest, the result is a fantastically versatile, utterly delicious, cross between New World Cabernet and Tuscan Chianti.  The Cabernet shows in the wine’s richness of texture, length on the palate, and bold aromas and flavors of black currant, tobacco and herb.  Sangiovese shines through with a juicy black cherry lift, hints of fresh flowers, and a food friendly finish of dark fruit, juicy acids, and lightly grippy tannins.  You’ll savor this with burgers, lamb or steak, gulp it with pizza, pasta, or mushrooms, sip it happily on its own, and – at these prices – be happy to share it with a crowd.

Palazzone Orvieto Classico Vignarco 2015 Product #31231 (In Stock)
Palazzone Orvieto Classico Vignarco 2015 Palazzone Orvieto Classico Vignarco 2015

We've featured Palazzone's other Orvietos before, but this year it was the Classico that really grabbed our attention.  It's a traditional blend of 50% Procanico, 30% Grechetto and dollops of Verdello, Drupeggio and Malvasia that comes together to deliver boatloads of classic Orvieto character.  What's that, you ask?  Try aromas and flavors of bright, fresh, sweet lemon juice with a twist of fennel frond and squeeze of honeysuckle.  Not a "light, crisp, neutral" Italian white, this sports big flavors and a rich, mouth-coating, texture and a long, mouthwatering, finish of lemon oil, honeysuckle, and mineral flavors lingering nicely.  There's enough body and interest and fruit to make this a joy to drink solo and it will sing with salads, seafood, and cheese.  A winning value that outperforms many wines at 2x the price.

Cantele Salice Salentino Riserva 2013 Product #31614 (In Stock)
Cantele Salice Salentino Riserva 2013 Cantele Salice Salentino Riserva 2013

Best vintage yet for this long-time southern Italian favorite!

"The Cantele 2013 Salice Salentino Riserva shows a greater level of depth and finesse compared to many of its peers. The wine is packed tight with blackberry fruit, with Maraschino cherry, plum and prune in abundance. The wine is chewy and rich for sure, but it also provides an authentic and generous portrait of a red wine from Puglia. A spicy beef or lamb dish would make the perfect pairing partner."Wine Advocate 90 points

Even bigger, bolder, more fruit filled, and even more delicious than before.  From vineyards around Rome, the Volpetti packs a punch of lush dark damson plum and black cherry fruit with accents of earth and spice.  A short stay in old oak barrels softens the tannins and adds a hint of sweet balsamic.  Drink this a touch cool with pizza margherita, a bowl of pasta in red sauce, or even a big, juicy, burger and you'll be very, very, happy!

If you're writing too many words (or thinking too hard about) Prosecco, then you're probably doing something wrong.  This is the kind of Prosecco Italians drink in the afternoon or during the run up to dinner, a crisp, clean, glass of fizz that enlivens the spirits and whets the appetite.  Ripe peach and pear fruit hold center stage with a spice note adding interest.  Fruity, frothy, fun.

Fracchia Voulet Malvasia Di Casorzo D'asti 2015 Fracchia Voulet Malvasia Di Casorzo D'asti 2015

This delicious frizzante wine is a rare version of red Malvasia, made with a touch of sweetness and a light, frothy, sparkle. As The Washington Post’s Dave McIntyre said about the 2011, “This delightful little frizzante red from Piedmont is a cousin to Brachetto d’Acqui, and equal to Brachetto in its affinity for chocolate."  As always, the lightly sweet red raspberry and strawberry fruit is a delight!

La Mondianese Grignolino d' Asti 2015 Product #31635 (In Stock)
La Mondianese Grignolino d' Asti 2015 La Mondianese Grignolino d' Asti 2015

What is Grignolino?  A red wine grape from Piemonte, Italy, where the root name – grignole – means “many pips”, referring to the many seeds found in this rarely seen grape.  It’s prone to being tough and tannic, but not here.  Diane thought this tasted like “Pinot Noir and Sangiovese had a baby”, and there's definitely something to that.  In any event, it’s a lightly colored and textured wine that opens with aromas of sweet cherry, red berries, and a hint of lavender.  In the mouth the fruit is bright and juicy and a touch of earthiness comes up at the end.  Light enough to drink with fish or to take a chill for solo sipping.

The main white grape used in Umbria's Orvieto, here Grechetto gets a little extra bump from 10% Trebbiano Spoletino.  And an even bigger bump from the fantastic 2015 harvest, which gives this year's release remarkable volume and depth.  Bright, fresh, aromas of lemon oil, fennel frond, peach and a hint of crushed herb.  Then big, bold, flavors of fresh pineapple, pear and lemon pulp that really fill your mouth and are then scrubbed up by a bright, salty mineral and lemon zest, finish.  This is a lot of wine for the money!

Marramiero Montepulciano d'Abruzzo Da Ma 2014 Marramiero Montepulciano d'Abruzzo Da Ma 2014

If you’ve enjoyed Villa Medoro’s Tre Bicchieri Montepulciano, then Da Ma is definetly a wine you’ll want to try.  Made from Montepulciano grown on different sites from across the DOC zone, this is a terrific example of how Montepulciano can be both ripe and fresh at the same time.  It’s very fragrant with aromas of smoke, leather, and a touch of something earthy over ripe blackberry fruit.  Then big and mouthfilling and generous flavors of juicy blackberry, raspberry, cherry and even some strawberry and a touch more leather and smoke.  The fine, soft, tannins give this enough structure to stand up to meat but it’s a pretty delectable sipper, too.

Statti Gaglioppo Calabria 2015 Product #31874 (In Stock)
Statti Gaglioppo Calabria 2015 Statti Gaglioppo Calabria 2015

A touch richer and deeper in 2015, but still about as much fun as you can find under cork. A light chill is best for this rich but refreshing red.

"Earthy and autumnal tones rise to the top of the 2015 Gaglioppo. This is a raw and rustic wine that marches to the beat of its own drum. Its personality and genuine character are very reflective of what Gaglioppo typically offers. Dark fruit and dried cherry are followed by olive, tar and forest bramble. This an easy-drinking red for near-term consumption."Wine Advocate 88 points
